Fri, May 17; Thu-Sat, May 16-18, FESTIVAL, in L.A.:
8 pm “8th Ever LOS ANGELES OLD TIME SOCIAL” brings the second of three evenings and one whole day of performances, workshops, jams, dances, and “old time is good time” music to several venues in L.A. Though produced separately, it’s become the annual lead-in to Sunday’s TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL, as well as a mighty fine event on its own. Produced by Los Angeles’ old time trio, TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT, the festival is a hootin’ good time, with plenty of opportunities to learn from top players.
+
Here are the details for tonight’s 8 pm event, “AN EVENING OF OLD-TIME AMERICAN MUSIC” from top local and out of town musicians, at The Velaslavasay Panorama, 1122 W. 24th St, LA 90007.
+
The evening begins with Los Angeles-based KING BABY celebrating the release of their debut CD, then moves to the mandolin / violin & guitar duets of PAUL RANGELL & EMILY ABBINK of Santa Cruz, and things conclude (for tonight) with old time and country duo JESSE MILNES & EMILY MILLER, direct from West Virginia.
+
Concert admission is $20. Advance tix at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/358603
+
Brought together by a love for Old Timey dance, blues, and rag tunes from African-American musicians, KING BABY churns out hard driving dance tunes and jelly-legged jug numbers with a variety of instrumentations. MATT ORKIN, NICK BACHMAN, and KING BABY himself, JOSH ORKIN, are thrilled to welcome back from Pittsburgh founding band member MAX WARD for this performance. The band plays for square dances and performs regularly in one form or another in the L.A. area. They’d love for you to check out their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/kingbabyandson, and they promise to bring enough beards for everybody.
+
EMILY ABBINK & PAUL RANGELL play “social music” from the old world and new. They favor the ballo liscio tunes brought by Italian immigrants to San Francisco, along with the traditional music gleaned from Southwestern fiddlers. The duo performs weekly on mandolin / violin and guitar in cafes, restaurants, markets, and parades in Santa Cruz, CA. They also sharpen their trade with their two sons in the RHYTHM RANGELLERS, a fiddle-based band specializing in jigs, stomps, waltzes and “bustdowns” with music from New Mexico, Ireland, the American South, Arizona desert, and California. Paul & Emily are founding members of the famous roots band from New Mexico, BAYOU SECO, and have performed in Canada, France, England, Burma and Hawaii. You can find their recording, “Tuesday Nights,” on their website, www.rhythmrangellers.com
+
JESSE MILNES & EMILY MILLER perform country and old-time music, singing close harmony with Jesse’s unique fingerpicked guitar style, and a healthy dose of old-time fiddling beneath open starlit skies of Joshua Tree, California. Emily was raised playing and singing LOUVIN BROTHERS and STANLEY BROTHERS songs with her parents while they traveled the world as journalists. Jesse grew up in the world of West Virginia old-time music, learning from masters like MELVIN WINE and ERNIE CARPENTER. They live in central West Virginia when they are not on the road with their country band, THE SWEETBACK SISTERS.

There’s more tomorrow, all day, with this festival.

The PORCH GIRLS, from humble beginnings jamming on the porch in Topanga Canyon, have grown into an entertaining high-energy roots band. Their collective magic is delivered courtesy of Dina Fraboni on vocals, autoharp, jumping jack and shakers; Dana Wood, who contributes tasty vocals, mandolin and accordian; Jon Shea, a guitar guru who rounds out the vocal harmonies; and Steve Janowski thumpin’ up the bottom on his eucalyptus upright bass. There's more at www.reverbnation.com/theporchgirls

BRAD COLERICK was named in Billboard Magazine as “one of a baker’s dozen of acts to watch in the folk community around the world.”
Brad moved from his native Nebraska to Los Angeles in 1986 and built a successful career making music for commercials. He’s worked with a long list of legendary artists including BB King and the late Johnny Cash. Brad’s CDs have landed in the Top 5 of both the Folk DJ and Euro-Americana charts, and he has played hallowed stages across the country from Freight & Salvage and McCabes in the west to The Bluebird and Birchmere back east. (“the venue named by the Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the Andy Williams Show as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar."
+
In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times.
+
Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire”.Currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties," John York is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned Folk Rock/Country Rock group, the Byrds. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band)……and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist Sumi Foley. Recently, John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of Kim Fowley on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter Patrick Brayer. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time
