LATE BREAKING NEWS...
We learned late Saturday that ALAN O'DAY has died. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his widow, Yuki. The Guide's editor says, "Like many reading this, I have fond memories of conversations and some shared meals with Alan. He wrote and performed the #1 hit,'Undercover Angel,' which he reprised this past December at the annual Holiday Caroling for Shut-Ins produced by Vincent Leinen. I only sang with Alan in the chorus this last time around, on some traditional Christmas carols. Carl Verheyen (Supertramp) and other stars accompanied Alan on his song. With Alan departed, it's as bestselling music biographer Paul Zollo just observed, there's quite a band in rock and roll heaven.

AND check the Guide’s write-ups on each festival. Use our site's "search" function at the top of the “full web edition” page, or scroll to find ’em by the dates. Be sure you get tix before they sell-out – some will! We cover a LOT of details, but sometimes the link for a festival’s site has esoterica we didn’t have at press time, like provisions for jamming, where the best jams happen, early-bird discounts, volunteer opportunities that get you in free, extra-fare VIP seating, camping or lodging info, reserving shuttles / transport to avoid parking hassles, and more.

Sat, May 18, FESTIVAL, in Los Angeles:
Noon-11 pm “8th Ever LOS ANGELES OLD TIME SOCIAL” reaches its crescendo after three evenings, with today’s full day and evening of performances, workshops, jams, dances, and “old time is good time” music. Though produced separately, it’s become the annual lead-in to Sunday’s TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL, as well as a mighty fine event on its own. Produced by Los Angeles’ old time trio, TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT, the festival is a hootin’ good time, with plenty of opportunities to learn from top players.
+
Saturday events all take place at the American Legion Hall Post 206, 227 N Avenue 55, Highland Park (L.A.) 90042.
+
The workshops range from $10 for a single event to $20 for all of them.
+
Beginning at noon, there are afternoon workshops which offer participants the opportunity to learn old-time banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar styles from musicians performing during the event, including JESSE MILNES, PAUL RANGELL & EMILY ABBINK, DAVID BRAGGER, CHRIS BERRY and TOM SAUBER, as well as clogging from RUTH ALPERT & REBECCA STOUT, harmony singing with EMILY MILLER, and square dance calling from SUSAN MICHAELS. The workshops are $20 ($20 for all day, including the evening dance). It's bring-your-own-instrument. Seating for workshops is limited and reservations are encouraged. Reservations can be made at www.oldtimeisagoodtime.com or by emailing davidbragger@yahoo.com.
+
The afternoon will transition into the evening with a KIDS’ DANCE and CAKEWALK that starts at 6:30 pm, hosted by KATY THE FLOWER LADY and SUSAN MICHAELS, with music from L.A.’s own HOLLYWOOD BOLL WEEVILS.
+
The Square Dance begins at 8 pm, with a dance set from L.A.-based SAUSAGE GRINDER, and from West Virginia, JESSE MILNES, EMILY MILLER & FRIENDS. They will be playing to the calling of SUSAN MICHAELS, and AMY HOFER from Portland. The square dance is open to all and is $10.
+
SAUSAGE GRINDER is Los Angeles’ all-natural hillbilly and country blues band, combining the traditional sounds of fiddle and banjo breakdowns with the low-down sound of country blues, topped off with a touch of ragtime and hillbilly jazz. The versatile acoustic ensemble features fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, washboard, and a few odds and ends. Sausage Grinder was formed in 2008 out of a desire to play this classic music “right” without being slavish imitators or academic lecturers. As old-time and blues fiddler Adam Tanner puts it, Sausage Grinder’s “reverence to the old 78s hasn’t restrained them from exploring even grimier nooks and crannies … unrestrained and impolite the Grinder’s performances are visceral and joyous — a blast from the past with a nod to the immediacy of the future!” Or as LA Weekly says succinctly, the band’s performance feels “reminiscent of an old Mickey Mouse cartoon.” More at http://sausagegrindermusic.com
+
JESSE MILNES & EMILY MILLER perform country and old-time music, singing close harmony with Jesse’s unique fingerpicked guitar style, and a healthy dose of old-time fiddling. Emily was raised playing and singing Louvin Brothers and Stanley Brothers songs with her parents while they traveled the world as journalists. Jesse grew up in the world of West Virginia old-time music, learning from masters like Melvin Wine and Ernie Carpenter. They live in central West Virginia when they are not on the road with their country band, THE SWEETBACK SISTERS. For the Saturday Square Dance they’ll be joined by friends. Inside info suspects that one of them will be THE BEES KNEES’ JOE WACK.
+
AMY HOFER is another Californian who moved up to Portland, Oregon. She fiddles, calls square dances, and helps put on the “Every Sunday Square Dance.” By day she is a librarian.
+
SUSAN MICHAELS is a writer and a teacher of traditional American dancing, especially contra dancing and square dancing. Susan says, “I have called and taught dances at local evenings, weekend workshops and week-long camps throughout the U.S. and Canada. I believe my ‘calling’ in life is to teach people how to hold hands in a circle.” More at www.susanmichaels.tv/about

Three (count ‘em, 3!) of Los Angeles’ most quirky, funny, and tuneful songwriters are appearing at the great Coffee Gallery in Altadena to perform their songs solo and together. There’ll be a lot of laughs, but be advised: They can just as easily spin a tale that will tear at your heartstrings. Gary is an Emmy-nominated songwriter and composer, Bill has composed for films and television, and Cynthia has earned acclaim for songwriting, screenwriting AND choreography! (Bill and Gary will not be dancing, however. Sorry, ladies!)
+
Cynthia Carle was nominated for an LA Weekly award for her work on the hit Re-Animator the Musical. Screenwriter of The Sixth Man and You Wish, actor on and off-Broadway and in Louis Malle’s “Alamo Bay” opposite Ed Harris, she performs her whip-smart songs all over Los Angeles.
+
How cool is it that Bill Berry appears as “The Transit TV Music Man” on video screens on Metro buses all over the county? Along with that, Bill produced the music for ABC’s “Sons and Daughters,” and has worked with the likes of Karen Black and Martin Mull.
+
Gary Stockdale is an Emmy-nominated songwriter and TV composer, most recently for “Penn & Teller: BULLSH*T” on Showtime. His musical “Bukowsical,” written with Spencer Green, won the 2007 NY Fringe Festival, and is opening at the New Line Theatre in St. Louis on May 23rd.

Sat, May 18, in Palmdale:
8 pm LENNY DODGE and ELAYNA, both favorites at this venue, return to Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html.
+
Both LENNY DODGE and ELAYNA have been good pals to Butler's over the years, and they return for an evening of good tunes, good times and good friends. “These two crazy kids haven't shared a stage for, like, forever, and we're just really jazzed about having them back after so long,” says the venue.
+
Things will kick off with singer-songwriter, studio whiz and eccentric millionaire playboy ("No, he's not," says his wife, Katherine) LENNY DODGE and his army of acoustic guitars taking the stage, demonstrating how to rock out gently with chops, conviction and good humor, dishing out a medley of easy-rocking originals that go down smooth, but pack an affable wallop. Lenny's been MIA for far too long, and it'll be great to see the big lug right back where he belongs.
+
And then ELAYNA, the “First Lady of the Antelope Valley Folk Scene,” accompanied by her faithful sidekick DAVE "The Stringwalker" SPROWL, will be serving-up her own patented blend of smart, passionate folk music for smart, passionate folks, spinning a silvery web of spirited (and occasionally spiritual) soulfulness that cuts through it all and gets right to the heart of the matter. Elayna's nowhere near as elusive as the Mysterious Mr. Dodge, but it's still always a treat to hear her (I don't think she's ever delivered the same set twice. Whether she's dusting-off some treasured old ditty from the 1920s, delivering some prime Prine, or serving up a brand new original, Elayna's living proof that music still matters, always did, always will.

VIKTORIJA GECYTE hit the stage at the age of five in her native Lithuania. She was soon singing festivals, touring Europe, recording, and making appearances on Lithuanian television. Now living in Paris, she met Gene and Sean while in college in the U.S., making this her fourth American tour with Go Trio.

THE SHOW PONIES play at 11:30 am, bringing “Folk-Influenced Country.” An indie-folk band with old tyme country influences, striking a balance between old and new; joy and sorrow; rough and tender. The band started in 2011 as the combined musical creativity of Clayton Chaney and Andi Schrock.; Schrock is a native Texan, while Chaney was born in Texas and raised in Arkansas. Heading to Los Angeles at different times for unrelated reasons, they eventually found themselves singing, writing, and performing together. Jason Harris, fellow musician and Texan, initially introduced the duo. Harris jumped at the opportunity to produce The Show Ponies’ debut album, Here We Are!, bringing his extensive training in music composition to the project. Shortly after recording the album, Harris officially joined The Show Ponies as their guitarist and banjo player. Philip Glenn joined the group after recording fiddle tracks with the band. Glenn is considered by many to be one of the top young fiddle players in the country; before joining the other Ponies in the studio, Glenn attended the Mark O'Conner Fiddle Camp where he was awarded the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin. Kevin Brown soon became the fifth Pony, lending his drumming expertise while earning his masters degree in percussion performance from CSU Long Beach. Very rarely do five people with such exceptional talent join together to create such a cohesive sound.
The Show Ponies play regularly throughout the west coast to support their debut album Here We Are!, released in April 2012. They are ramping up momentum to tour the country and record their next album.

Inspired by Atkins and classical violinist Jascha Heifetz, Evan has created a unique playing style that combines bass lines, chords, rhapsodic runs and tremolo melodies. Two of his solo mandolin recordings have been released by Rounder Records: “Evan Marshall Is the Lone Arranger,” which the Washington Post labeled "Truly dazzling," the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "Superhuman," and the Fresno Bee called "Mind-boggling;" and “Mandolin Magic,” which the St. Paul Pioneer Press applauded for "A stunning mastery of interpretation." Evan also has recorded three solo CDs for his own label, Mandolin Conservatory. In 1995, Evan gave his New York debut at Merkin Hall. Later that year, he made his first appearance on “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor. VENTUCKY STRING BAND brings “California Country and Bluegrass” 1 pm. Like a jukebox of old 78 records, The Ventucky String Band is reminiscent of a time when Jazz bands featured banjo and bluegrass music was as novel as the arrival of television. Where some have tried to diminish Ventura as “Ventucky,” this band sees their name not as a veiled jab at Bluegrass music or the city that brought them together - but instead as a tribute to the music and culture of the farmers, roustabouts, and cattlemen that helped grow the city during the early days of big-oil and agriculture in Ventura County. Typical sets can vary from 1930s Jazz & Bluegrass to cowboy ballads & honky-tonk -- all seamlessly woven together with original songwriting that draws inspiration from the deep well-spring of American roots music. Formed in late 2010, this highly skilled multi-instrumental quartet features Matt Sayles, Dave White, Rick Clemens and Mark Parson, blending their decades of musical experience into a sound that harkens back to the dust-bowl era of California, and the roots of the “"California-Country” sound. Members of the Band have played professionally for over 30 years, with individual appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, the Wheeling West Virginia Jamboree (WWVA), as well as performances with Bluegrass, Country, Texas Swing & Cajun/Zydeco legends like Johnny Gimble, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Larry Sparks, Doyle Lawson, the Bellamy Brothers, Fernest Arceneaux, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys and Hot Club of Cowtown. More at www.frostbittengrass.com/Ventucky.html.

Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band play at 3 pm. A Southern California based group featuring Devitt Feeley, Lydia Veilleux, and Craig Ferguson, they got their start in the bluegrass music field by winning first place in the 2009 Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest Band Competition. In January of 2012, they took first place in the California Bluegrass Association’s “Great 48 Showcase Showdown,” competing against the top bluegrass bands from across the state and earning a spot in the Father’s Day Festival in Grass Valley. Their first recording, “Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band,” released in November of 2010, was recorded in a 1920’s cabin in the mountain community of Big Bear, CA, and was mastered by legendary bluegrass engineer Billy Wolf in Arlington, VA. The album has been receiving regular airplay on radio stations across the country. They have also appeared on 2 episodes of WETV's “My Fair Wedding” with David Tutera as well as in a cover story photo spread in C Magazine’s wedding edition. Their live ensemble at Topanga will include Brian Netzley on bass and long-time Topanga banjo contest judge, Kevin Gore. More at www.rockyneckbluegrass.com/.

BEES KNEES are Joe Wack (fiddle), Steve Lewis (banjo), and Laura Osborn (guitar/banjo-uke). Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of traditional music ranging from high-energy, all-out dance tunes to hauntingly beautiful melodies from the Southern Appalachian region. Though they’ve only been playing together as a trio since 2008, their old-time music reflects decades of playing for dances, concerts, workshops, parties, and events, as well as just good old-time music-making with like-minded folks on both sides of the country. Joe Wack was first enthralled by old time music as an art student in West Virginia University in the early ‘70s. From that time he has maintained the dual vocations of musician and artist. As a banjo player, he was an original founder of the still-active WV stringband Stewed Mulligan. Since moving to L.A. in '93, he has worked as a character designer for “The Simpsons” TV series while remaining immersed in old-time music on fiddle, banjo, and guitar. Laura Osborn has been a lifelong musician, performing and teaching flute in the Los Angeles area for almost twenty years. While enjoying a robust family life with her husband, two children, and two cats, she finds time whenever possible to play old-time music on guitar, banjo, and banjo-uke. Steve Lewis has played the 5-string banjo most of his adult life. A veteran of contests, fiddlers’ conventions, and festivals, Steve has also produced and played for contradances since 1989. He continues to play for dances, both contra and square with one or another of four old-time bands. For the past eleven years, Steve has led an old-time jam at the CTMS Folk Music Center in Encino on the first Sunday of each month.

Dancing with Modal Tease at 1:30 pm. "Music from Appalachia and beyond" is what they’ve been serving up, with sizzling' hot slices of “Old Tunes for New Times” since 2009. Rooted in America's old time music tradition, they’re adventurous and versatile, contrasting fast-paced breakdowns with moseying blues, archaic crooked fiddle tunes with straight-up square dance numbers, humorous ditties with Carter Family laments, mandolin with fiddle counterpoint, and typical clawhammer banjo with novel applications. What unites their varied tastes is their penchant for modal tunes, which liberally pepper their performances, giving them an "out of this world" quality often associated with Celtic or Irish music. But rest assured their music is 100% American. At this square dance Belinda Thom (fiddle) and Cliff Latimer (mandolin) will drive the groove with tight unison melodies, while Jim Hamilton (clawhammer banjo) and Larry Ullman (standup bass) provide the infectious backdrop. Recently, they won awards at the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and the Goleta Old-Time Fiddlers Convention. In December, 2011, they released their first CD, “Aggravatin Beauty.” More at www.ModalTease.com

THE HOLLOW TREES have been sharing “Folk Music for Families” around California for eight years now. Their upbeat acoustic Americana music is like a gumbo made with a mix of bluegrass, western swing, blues, and folk styles, seasoned with a generous helping of fun.
Hailing from Nelsonville, USA, they perform classic standards, strange and wonderful covers and great original songs. With some luck they’ll be joined by their friend Nelson playing his homemade banjitar. Come on by and join the hootenanny! Learn more at www.thehollowtrees.com

Earthworm Ensemble plays at noon, bringing music for kids and parents with some of Los Angeles’s best folk/country artists singing and playing guitars, keys, ukulele, jawharp, and percussion, with rich 3 and four part harmonies. Their live show features Sherri and Shawn Nourse, Victoria Jacobs and Paul Lacques, and Denny Moynahan, aka King Kukulele. We’re calling it family music, because parents sing along as much as their kids do. They say, “Our songs are for families to enjoy together, and talk about the ideas in the songs and our live show conversations: buffalo migration, ladybugs, earthworms, composting and recycling, taking the train, farmers markets, and what we can all do to keep our planet green.” More at www.earthwormensemble.com.

SCOTTISH FIDDLERS play at 1 pm. For the past thirty years, the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles have delighted audiences throughout Southern California with the lively, energetic and irresistibly uplifting music of Scotland, the Shetlands, Cape Breton Island and Ireland.

Sat, May 25, near Lake Casitas:
6 pm YOUNG DUBLINERS, plus an opening set by THE INDIAN TRADING FURS, kick-off this year's "DANCING OAK RANCH SUMMER CONCERT SERIES," located in a wooded canyon on Hwy 150, a few miles from Lake Casitas.
+
The summer series returns for its 6th year with more delightfully delicious live acoustic music and the rousing, energetic and exciting Young Dubliners performing their passionate and universally popular Celtic / Celtic rock classics and catchy original tunes.
+
Gates open at 5 pm for claiming your spot and pre-concert potluck. Opening act at 6, YOUNG DUBLINERS play at 7 pm.
+
The YOUNG DUBLINERS are quite possibly "Celtic Rock's" hardest working band, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans across the US and Europe every year.
+
In recent years, the Young Dubliners have twice appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," had songs featured in the TV shows "Sons of Anarchy" and "Human Target," and toured extensively as headliners and as openers for a diverse list of artists, including The Flaming Lips, Collective Soul, Jethro Tull, Johnny Lang, and many more.
+
Although the band's sound is most commonly called "Celtic Rock," that label, as labels often can be, is misleading.
+
The Irish influence is there, certainly, but it's not the only influence that rears its head on their albums, or in live shows. "That was always the idea", Keith Roberts, lead singer for the band explains. He adds, "The sound was always intended to be a hybrid because we all come from different backgrounds. Even though two of us are from Ireland, a lot of the music we listened to growing up wasn't Irish at all, but when we got here, we got homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish Music.”
+
Opening act plays 6-6:45 pm, marking the return of the dynamite Santa Barbara indie band THE INDIAN TRADING FURS. The event promo says , “Sounds like … Mumford & Sons thrown into a circle pit. Breakneck guitar parts, whip-like drum fills, fearless banjo and soaring vocals have helped move this trio from local street corners to a nine state tour and a new album in the works.”
+
Potluck dinner is optional -- come early (gates at 5 pm) and bring a dish to share in the picnic with friends, family and the band , on the grass under the oaks. They supply the cups, plates, juice, coffee & water, but it’s BYOB.
+
Bring a low-back deck chair, a blanket and a small flashlight to help find your vehicle after the show. The evening gets cool -- there's a bonfire at the break -- but bring a jacket or extra blanket for the second half. Friendly, well behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.
+
Tix $20 in advance or at the gate, and kids under age 15 are free. Questions? Contact Shane at 805-665-8852 or shane@ojaiconcertseries.com.

Tue, May 28, CD RELEASE SHOW,
Live in L.A., plus on TV:
8:30 pm JOHN FOGERTY plays a special, short-notice and one-night-only "Album Release & Birthday Bash" show at the El Rey in L.A.
+
The show celebrates the same-day release of his much-anticipated new album "Wrote a Song for Everyone." Plus, May 28 is also the birthday of the Grammy Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
+
A limited amount of pre-sale tickets for this intimate show became available Tuesday, May 14 to members of FOGERTY’s fan club via his website, www.johnfogerty.com.
+
The show will be filmed and broadcast live on AXS TV.
+
The new album, on Vanguard Records, is a celebration of the iconic songbook of one of rock’s most important artists. John Fogerty is a national treasure who’s sold over 100 million albums. Produced by the artist himself, who is no stranger to the most intricate layering and nuances of music and sound, the album is a collection of 12 classics and deep tracks from his CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL and solo material, plus two brand new solo songs.
+
All the classic tracks from his remarkable canon of hits were recorded this time around in collaboration with today’s biggest stars from the country, pop and rock worlds. This is Fogerty's ninth studio solo album since disbanding Creedence Clearwater Revival.
+
Mixed by Bob Clearmountain, it was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville -- except for one special location -- "Proud Mary" was recorded in New Orleans with Allen Toussaint and the Rebirth Brass Band.
+
FOGERTY recorded “Fortunate Son” with Foo Fighters at their 606 Studio using "the" legendary Neve recording console featured in the #1 iTunes documentary, "Sound City."
+
Of course, there are tales to be told about each track. (We only wonder why he chose to include the abominable Kid Rock in such a fine project.)
+
If you want to watch live on TV:
AXS TV is broadcast on DIRECTV Channel 340, DISH Network Channel 167, AT&T U-Verse Channel 1106, and Verizon FiOS Channel 569. For additional affiliate and distributor channel information, including Comcast Xfinity, Charter, Suddenlink and others, check www.axs.tv/subscribe.

I hope the fiddle contest appreciates how much you do beyond the call of duty. Using time between scheduled events as an open mic let us hear talented kids we would have missed. That was just something you did, according to other people working the contest at that stage, right? That group of kids that was so good? Did you really go out and find them under an oak tree? That must have been a thrill like a fairey tale for them!!!!!

  5. Thanks for the compliments, on behalf of all who do so much to make Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival a success every year. You can volunteer for the 54th Annual in 2014, y'know! We would be happy to have you! As for the open mic on the Railroad Stage, I began doing that several years back. Seemed crazy to have a dead stage while contest results were being tabulated, and the next scheduled event was an hour away. Over the years, bands have been fomed that way -- one even played live on the radio the following Saturday, on "Tied to the Tracks," after they met jamming and got drafted onto the TBFC stage minutes later. Festivals are magical places.

You seem to have some events months from now and all the other things get added soon before they happen. Right?

  7. It often turns out that way. Many concerts, club gigs, and other live music events happen on short notice. It is overwhelming to try to play traffic cop and get all the notices (of all of it) through the information intersection. Add to that the biggest complication: many musicians are wonderful on stage but truly inept at telling anyone about when and where they're playing, especially when it comes to asking anybody in the media to help spread the word. The Guide has consistently brought more -- far more -- than ANY other source, but it has never been easy!

So my dad has been learning to play ukulele and me and my bffs have been making fun of him. He paid to get all of us in to this banjo and fiddle place and we met all these cute guys who play all these mandylynn things (no ukuleles) and some guy gave me this card with this blog and says we can find this here all the time? True?

  9. You and your bffs just discovered the vibrant, cross generational, youthfully exhuberant world of Acoustic Americana / roots music. Welcome! Ask him to take you to thw Huck Finn or the Live Oak festivals (they're the same weekend in June), and next weekend, to the Topanga Days that's really in Topanga. All have lots of happy people about your age. And thanks for writing. Keep us postes as you explore the music!
