2) Today in history:
.
On this day in 1972, a group of burglers was caught by D.C. Police inside the Democratic Party's National Headquarters office in the Watergate Hotel and Office complex. In addition to burglary tools and electronic bugging devices, some of the burglers had money in their possession that was traced directly back to CREEP -- the Republican Committee to Re Elect the President that was President Richard Nixon's campaign organization. "Watergate," as all of what followed became known, revealed systematic break-ins, burglaries, wiretaps, falsified documents, illegal funds and pay-offs, and illegal activities under color of law and Executive authority. In 1974, on the brink of impeachment and certain conviction, Nixon became the only president ever to resign the office. Washington Post newspaper reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and editor Ben Bradlee -- together with Woodward's mysterious source, "Deep Throat," uncovered much of the story that led to Congressional action in an exercise of journalistic prowess that could not be repeated in our time of mega-giant corporate-controlled media.

Her performing name evokes the style described by her motto: “New Texas Blues with respect for tradition.” Though she grew up and started her musical career in the north and northwest (North Dakota,Michigan,Oregon),she is a naturalized Houstonian by now,and the Texas blues tradition is very evident in her original music.
+
Sweet Mama Cotton (aka Marcy Rae) is also a veteran of the folk-Americana music scene. She has been a frequent resident and participant at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and has performed many times at Anderson Fair,Houston’s iconic original music listening room. Sweet Mama Cotton’s piano skills are the perfect accompaniment for her velvet voice. Her music tells about her view of the world, and invites you to leave your worries at home and celebrate life with her “affirming blues” and heartfelt lyrics.

Is there NO END to the amazing festivals yall have out there??? If I had enough bonus miles, I'd enter to win those tickets to the Bayou & Blues Festival!!! Except the stupid airlines won't let you use your miles on short notice, anyway. I'll be thinking of yall in balmy California while I swelter this weekend in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteActually, we have had people fly here to use tickets! When we gave-away tickets to see STEVE EARLE in Royce Hall at UCLA, the winner of the last pair flew in from Michigan JUST to use the tickets!
DeleteI always enjoy your 'today in history' comments. I especially like your commentary at the end of your anniversary of the Watergate story, about Woodward and Bernstein and their 'exercise of journalistic prowess that could not be repeated in our time of mega-giant corporate-controlled media.'
ReplyDeleteLong Beach Bayou is such a wonderful event. If I didn't already have my tickets (two day passes) I would jump on your ticket give-away! I bought mine when they first became available. See you there!
ReplyDeleteLynne and I love Long Beach Bayou! I split my time with the blues stage. She dances everything at the zydeco dance floor. I'm telling my friends who are too impoverished to buy tickets that they can win them from you!!!
ReplyDeleteOh i was here to enter for free tickets and my daughter is yelling at me that i need to go to email to do that. So i want to say while i am here just how much everyone at our house likes and uses your guide. Thank you, from Heidi
ReplyDeleteHow'd that happen? We knew nothing about the Scottish festival in Vista. Glad we read it here.
ReplyDelete
