Big Mama's has great Louisiana-style down-home cooking, and Wumbloozo's leader Michael says it's the best fried chicken he's ever had.

These storytellers-in-song found their roots in the vocal jazz department of CSU Long Beach, where the members all studied with Christine Guter. This foundation in jazz gives this trio an inherent flexibility to their sound, allowing them to change and adjust their tone to fit each song, be it bluegrass, folk or even the occasional ANDREWS SISTERS-style tune.

By the end of the tour they had become a duo, backing up each others' work as if they had been doing it all their lives. LAWIM says it's "part of our commitment to nurture up-and-coming talent and reach out to the community through music." Los Angeles Women in Music is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Christiane Cargill Kinney is a partner at LeClairRyan, and Chair of the firm’s Entertainment Industry Team. Kinney’s entertainment practice is focused on the representation of talent primarily in the areas of music, film, and television. She also specializes in branding and cross-promotional opportunities for corporations and artists. Kinney is lead singer, pianist & composer for LA-based band Riddle the Sphinx, and a voting member of the Recording Academy. As such, her personal experience as both a recording artist and an entertainment attorney provide a unique perspective to the deal-making process. As a strong supporter of education for independent artists, Kinney also writes a monthly legal column for CD Baby’s DIY Musician blog. CD Baby, the largest online distributor of independent music, recently recognized Kinney as #1 out of their list of the Top 10 Music Law Resources to follow on Twitter, noting that “her in-the-thick-of-it perspectives carry a lot of weight.” Kinney has also been recognized by Super Lawyers magazine, and has been featured in Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year issue for her charity work in bringing music and art programs to at-risk youth.

Throwback flapper Janet Klein is the very definition of an “old soul.” She grew up in 1970s San Bernardino, yet fell in love with the bits of a lost California and a lost time she never knew — the historical images she’d seen of early turn-of-the-century postcards with orange groves and the old Carnegie Library with the onion dome. The way things were got into her blood, and today she’s the most refreshing anachronism to ever materialize from the ether of Prohibition.

Klein is a channel to a definitive time in American music when Eton crops were the rage and batting-eyes meant you had a live one on your hands. Thing is,L.A.-based Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys are more than some nostalgic shtick. She doesn’t merely perform songs from “lost America” — obscure numbers circa 1900s-1930s such as barrelhouse jazz, foxtrots, chansonettes,  ragtime ditties and vaudeville from the Great Depression — she actually lives them, and transports her audiences along the way.

Klein considers herself an “archeologist” for digging up buried treasures by the likes of Wilton Crawley and A.P. Randolf and Robert Cloud, and resurrecting their songs for the Victrola. She and the Parlor Boys — featuring an all-star line-up playing banjos, uprights, trombones, trumpets, violins, piano, and more — bring all the authentic wild spirit of that bygone era.

The “naughty” music of the day is Klein’s strong suit, and the ukulele chanteuse sings 'em in an Olive Oyl-meets-Billie Holiday voice while coyly bobbling in step to the strump. Hotsy totsy.

I SEE HAWKS IN L.A.'s 7th CD, "Mystery Drug," officially drops on August 20. So this CD release show gives those in attendance a two-day jump to buy it at the show.

The following is a compilation of comments on pre-release copies of the album, from lots of material released to the media. (We are not interested in plagiarizing from others' comments, and we do include our own here; but we freely use from all we agree with from what was given us by the Hawks. We choose this move for expediency, because it should give our readers an earlier opportunity to decide if they want to make reservations for the show. If you wait for our review of the new record, that would be awhile.)

The new album, on Western Seeds Records (in the US) comes on the heels of the Hawks' latest successful tour of continental Europe and the UK, and the album's overseas release on Blue Rose Records.

I See Hawks In L.A. can be, and had been, variously described as part acoustic nu-folk, part psychedelic country acoustic-and-electric rockers, and as all-Americana. This latest album represents a gathering of their longtime musical tribe with stellar guest contributions from some of California’s finest roots country musicians. The album has already been acclaimed by critics, one ststing it "breathes with a new life that will both refresh and challenge long time fans."

Hawks listeners will be struck by the chances taken in this latest phase of the band's journey — mixing the serious country cred of the band's members, who have played with Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Hazel and Alice, "and in every honky-tonk from Mississippi to Malibu" — with wild lyricism and surreal story telling.

Audra Schroeder of the Austin Chronicle calls the Hawks, "Americana, traversing the landscape of the Golden State like Didion on horseback. It's a divine fusion of humor and twang that's definitely high, but not that lonesome."

This album, "Mystery Drug," burrows deeper down the white rabbit hole. Layered with the electric swagger and sweetness of 1950's rock n roll, songs like "If You Remind Me," "Yesterday's Coffee," and even public service announcement "Stop Driving Like an A**hole," carry the innocent melodies of a different time. Indeed, the whole of "Mystery Drug" carries a lightness in sharp relief to the dark contemplations of last year's all-acoustic "New Kind of Lonely."

Are the Hawks more optimistic these days?  Maybe, or maybe it's just the opposite and they have let go of all the false expectations of genre, or for that matter, career.  There's a freedom here. A weightlessness. Floating on soft beds of reverb and pedal steel, a gentle and rowdy warmth surrounds the entire work, particularly on dreamlike "The River Knows," the final song of the record and perhaps its strongest and most hopeful statement.

"Mystery Drug" cuts a wide swath of post-Gram Parsons California country music: a sardonic / tragic cowpunk essay on commerce-as-love, titled "My Local Merchants"; a haunted accordion theme on a desert marriage ritual, in "One Drop Of Human Blood"; and folk rockers on the vanishing of spirits and aquifers of the American West, in "Sky Island," and "Oklahoma's Going Dry".

Musical guests include pedal steelers Rick Shea (Dave Alvin, Wanda Jackson) and Pete Grant (Grateful Dead, The Dillards, Rodney Crowell).  There's honky-tonk and slide guitar, a Celtic 6/8 on "Death and Ancestry," three memorable love ballads, the signature Hawks' harmonies, and lots of cosmic acousticism. All that combines to make "Mystery Drug" a complex and varied voyage, full of wit and surprises.

I See Hawks In L.A. were founded in 1999 by Minnesotan turned Echo Park dweller Rob Waller and Cal natives Paul and Anthony Lacques. The band has been declared “the city’s premier roots band” by the Los Angeles Times andthe their music “trance-inducing, the stories transfixing, the vibe completely Californian,” by No Depression.

Hawks records have always mixed traditional bar room musings with tales rooted in geography, as in their treatments of the mating dances of whales, the life of Senator Byrd from West Virginia, a Humboldt pot grower’s flight to Tibet, boom-and-bust in guitarist Lacques’s Mojave desert homeland, wandering hippie caravans, and the imminent collapse of suburban Houston.  In 2002, the Hawks were decidedly ahead of the curve in condemning the Bush administration’s drums of war.

Despite this out-on-a-limb perch, I See Hawks In L.A. have been embraced by legends of contemporary country, requested as an opener by Lucinda Williams and Chris Hillman (who plays on ‘06’s album, "California Country," hitting the Americana Charts, #2 on XM radio’s alt country, and with three #1’s on the "Freeform American Roots Chart."  They’ve toured the U.S. many times, and just completed their fourth return to continental Europe and the UK, May 22-July 8.

You might catch the Hawks at outdoor "Hempfest" and "Belladrum Fest" in Scotland, at Joe’s Pub in NYC, Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago, House Of Blues and McCabes in L.A., or on the main stage at the Folk Alliance in Memphis.  From acoustic folk to raging big stage country rock psychedelia, the Hawks choose it all.
