♪ “STAGECOACH” FESTIVAL 2014 ticket sales start Oct 18. The 8th Annual Stagecoach Country Music Festival will run Friday, April 25th through Sunday, April 27th, 2014. The official announcement of next year's line up came just in time for ticket sales, and all are on thye festival’s website. One important note: because this one is rather expensive, they have provisions for ticket lay-aways.
+
ERIC CHURCH, JASON ALDEAN, LUKE BRYAN, LORETTA LYNN, HUNTER HAYES, BRANTLEY GILBERT, and FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE are among the headliners. The official Stagecoach 2014 poster, on the festival's site, has the complete lineup.
+
Of course, Folk-Americana music fans could care less about the Nashville pop-country "stars," and instead look forward with strong enthusiasm to the top bluegrass, Americana, folk and western music acts booked on the "B" and "C" stages. Those "sideshows" at Stagecoach are often inclusive of the best bookings at top folk festivals -- despite the challenge of apocalyptic over-amplification from the Nashville "Mane" Stage, half a mile away.

√ Tonight’s MUSIC-ON-TV:
.
We’re not returning to the days when we published extensive editions of “Tuneful TeeVee” – we just can’t handle the time that requires. But we do want to call your attention to what’s become the BEST night for music on TV in Los Angeles, and it’s all thanks to one station.
+
KLCS, the PBS affiliate owned by the Los Angeles City School District, presents more Roots-Americana music on a typical Friday that the other local stations do all year. Until quite recently, a stalwart was “BLUEGRASS UNDERGROUND,” broadcasting bluegrass concerts from a limestone cavern 330 feet underground – we hope it returns soon. The station adds and subtracts shows, not always to our liking, but overall, their commitment to Americana music is absolutely unparalleled in Southern California, and it goes a long way to fill the void of so little Folk-Roots on local radio.
+
"MUSIC CITY ROOTS AT THE LOVELESS CAFE" is the newest addition to the Friday night Americana music lineup on KLCS TV in Los Angeles, and it’s now first-up, airing 8-9 pm. Due on October 18 is a show with ROBIN & LINDA WILLIAMS, SCOTT MILLER, TOMI FUJIYAMA, and TILLER’S FOLLY. The October 4th episode was a hoot, featuring performances by the all-girl band DELLA MAE, and by TOM YARBROUGH, CAROLINA STORY, and MARLEY’S GHOST. If you can’t catch it on the tube, it’s available online at www.musiccityroots.
+
Following the new show is the veteran “AUSTIN CITY LIMITS,” airing 9-10 pm, and continuing its identity crisis between roots and “out-there” rock; recently, “ROCK N’ ROLL STORIES” has begun airing 10-11 pm, profiling rock musicians; and you’ll need to record the other great show, “JAMMIN’ AT HIPPIE JACKS,” which currently airs 5-5:30 am (Friday night / Saturday morning) – tonight’s show is a new one with ELIZABETH COOK. Pianists / keyboard players can keep recording from 5:30-6 am to get “THE PIANO GUY.”
+
It’s not as rich a s it was a few months ago, but it’s more than you’ll find elsewhere. We raise a hearty Yee-Hah for KLCS, and hope they maintain their singular commitment.

Eric Schwartz grabs you the first moment you hear him. Eric is brilliant -- he takes folk and crafts great melodies with the funniest, sharpest, and edgiest lyrics, twists it, and twists it again. So you'll laugh yourself silly, but it's never an exercise in silliness. Then, Eric will craft a ballad so beautiful and perfect your heart will ache. His new CD "Aristocrat" just came out. I started looking for the source and saw a man sitting on a chair, playing a guitar. I didn't know his name and had never seen him before but he was good and I kept listening. I was fascinated as I listened to his intricate guitar work and poetic lyrics. I decided to have him come to the Blue Power establishment and do an interview. During our interview Barry played 4 excellent songs which I think you will find interesting. His style is unique and exciting. His vocal abilities are on par with his playing. Review:
"A Critical Element Rick Shea: 'Sweet Bernardine'
+
"Semi-autobiographical singer-songwriter country-folk & blues
+
"It's been four years since this Southern California roots musician released 'Shelter Valley Blues,' and he's evidently spent the time touring and developing original material for this new album. Titled after Shea's childhood hometown of San Bernardino, the album spends time with both family and local lights, sketching a biography that recounts experience, history and legend. Shea's first-person narratives are sung in present tense, but filled with the considered detail and romanticism of retrospection. His images of an East L.A. musician's lodging provide a noirish setting for 'Mariachi Hotel,' and the true headlines of 'Gregory DeFord' are turned into an elegy that's as much for all those crushed by the recession as for the title character. The album includes low blues, folk and honky-tonk, all sung in an unassuming delivery that leaves the lyrics to do the work. The backings generally stick to acoustic textures, but the title track does bust out a compelling electric guitar solo. Shea's storytelling shows Merle Haggard as a primary influence, but it's clear that he's also connected with contemporaries like Dave Alvin, whose King of California pairs very nicely with this new album." -- ©2013 Hyperbolium.

Since his remarkable debut album, “Lead Me On,” came out in 1994, Phelps has written and performed some of the most compelling slide guitar-based music ever recorded. Though he spent his early years playing free jazz, he has never strayed too far from the roots music world that has become his passion. Phelps says, "I'd spent all this time learning improvisational music, but I'd always had an attraction to folk based music forms. So, I was listening to a lot of Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and some of the newer people like Leo Kottke and John Fahey. My music is a reflection of all the music I loved and steeped myself in. There's a space and openness in rural music that makes sense to me."

His most recent recorded work is last year's “Brother Sinner & The Whale,” a concept album exploring gospel themes through razor-sharp songs and gritty bottleneck guitar.

Later, Ana Gabriel came in second place at a local festival known as Valores Juveniles (Youthful Values), after singing 'No Me Lastimes Mas.' Hootenanny is an Appalachian colloquialism that was used in early twentieth century. During the early 1960s at the height of the Folk Music Revival, Woody Guthrie & Pete Seeger's newly formed folk-protest group, the Almanac Singers, worked out of a loft in New York City hosting regular (Sunday afternoon) concerts called "hootenannys," a word Pete and Woody had picked up in their cross-country travels.
+
What's so great about a hootenanny? One person described it as "cool thing is....it's not a sign up showcase open mic thing...who ever is fronting at the moment tries to pick songs everyone can join in on....at least on the choruses. anyone can jump in vocally or instrumentally....so many different levels makes it all the more fun... community sharing on a very level playing field. TRACY NEWMAN can tell you stories. In the early 70s, she joined an improv class taught by Gary Austin, which soon became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides performing, she taught and directed. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered there by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live. Some other Groundling alumni include: Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reubens and Kathy Griffin.
+
It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. Their first staff job was on "Cheers," followed by "Bob"(Bob Newhart), "The Nanny," "Ellen", "The Drew Carey Show" and the legendary "Hiller and Diller" (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.) In 1997, Newman and Stark won an Emmy and Peabody Award for writing the groundbreaking "coming out" episode of "Ellen." In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, "According to Jim," which ran for eight seasons.
+
Tracy had been writing songs all along, many of which were featured in TV shows. Now she's once again performing her music full-time. Her 2007 debut CD, "A Place in the Sun," is still a favorite with young and old alike, for long car rides across the nation. The title track on her new CD, "I Just See You," highlights the beauty of a long-term relationship. The Reinforcements are Gene Lippmann (guitar, bg vocals), John Cartwright (bass), Doug Knoll (drums) and Paula Fong (bg vocals.)

MICHAEL McNEVIN.... A San Francisco Bay Area native, Michael started his career with a six-month stint in New York City, cutting his troubadour teeth in the subways and streets of Greenwich Village. Now a veteran of the folk scene, Michael has logged close to 20 years worth of concerts across the U.S., and he's been a main stager at some of the bigger music festivals around, including the Strawberry, Kerrville, High Sierra, and Philadelphia music festivals.
+
He's been billed in clubs and halls with the likes of Johnny Cash, Shawn Colvin, Donovan, Richie Havens, Christine Lavin, Utah Phillips, and 100s of others on the songwriter circuit. He has a seasoned voice, accomplished steel string guitar work, and a vivid brand of storytelling. He is a past winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, a 6-time winner of the West Coast Songwriters Association "Song Of The Year" ('91, '92, '97, '98, '05, '09), and was chosen by Performing Songwriter Magazine as a Top 12 "DIY Artist Of The Year". With 5 releases under his belt, and a few hard to find cassettes, his next CD is tentatively titled "Kickin' Tires". Tracks include 'Broom' & 'Scarecrow' (both winners of the WCS 'Song Of The Year' award), 'Phoenixville', 'Pioneer Shindig, & '60 Years Of Sand'. Two of the tracks -'This Town Is Gonna Change' & 'I Shot Broncho Billy' - are also heard in the indie film "Weekend King", with five of his songs in the soundtrack, and a a cameo role as a broke and lovesick bartender.
+
In addition, Michael is an Etch A Sketch artist of some renown, delighting and dumbfounding audiences with his song illustrations on the little red toy. Michael has been a guest on CBS "Evening Magazine", numerous news and entertainment segments on NBC, ABC, and dozens of cable music shows.

Sun, Oct 20, in L.A.:
7:30 pm BRIAN WILSON & JEFF BECK team-up to play the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park, Los Angeles
+
Brian Wilson has had an amazing life and career (so far). Here's a synopsis of highlights.
+
"Brian Wilson is arguably the greatest American composer of popular music in the rock era. Born and raised in Hawthorne, California, he formed the Beach Boys in 1961 alongside his two younger brothers, cousin Mike Love, and school friend Alan Jardine. Serving as the group's primary songwriter, Wilson combined the rock urgency of Chuck Berry with the harmonies of the Four Freshmen before expanding his musical imagination during the late '60s, during which time he experimented with new songwriting structures and production techniques. Wilson retreated from his dominance of the Beach Boys after 1967, yielding most of the control to his younger brother Carl. He made sporadic contributions to their records, returning only briefly as a songwriter and producer in the mid-'70s.
+
"Following a long period of drug addiction, mental illness, and general isolation, Wilson issued his first solo album in 1988. Despite the promising lead single 'Love and Mercy,' commercial success proved elusive; ironically, the Beach Boys had recorded their own comeback record around the same time and wound up topping the charts with 'Kokomo.'
+
"Wilson attempted to find his footing with a second solo album, 'Sweet Insanity,' which was rejected outright by Sire and permanently shelved. In 1995, he reunited with his mid-'60s collaborator Van Dyke Parks for 'Orange Crate Art,' a collaborative album that featured Parks' songwriting and Wilson's vocals.
+
"That same year, Wilson was the subject of a documentary feature, 'I Just Wasn't Made for These Times,' for which he also recorded a full soundtrack. Following those releases was 1998's 'Imagination,' which included several throwbacks to lush Beach Boys productions but failed to entice a wide commercial audience.
+
"During his time with the Beach Boys, Wilson had often remained at home -- or in the studio -- while the rest of the group set out on tour. Things started to change in the early 2000s, when he began touring as a solo act (often accompanied by a large backing band) and released a pair of live titles: 'Live at the Roxy Theatre' (2000) and 'Pet Sounds Live' (2002). Unfortunately, the cobbled studio album that followed in 2004, 'Gettin' in Over My Head,' exhibited the same foibles as 'Imagination.'
+
"Also, it was overshadowed by Wilson's next project: preparing the legendary Beach Boys record 'SMiLE' for its live debut, as well as making new studio recordings of its songs. He debuted the new SMiLE at the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 20, 2004, and recorded it in the studio that April. Both the live and studio versions earned rapturous reviews, prompting Wilson to launch a full world tour in support of the Grammy-winning album. The seasonal effort 'What I Really Want for Christmas' followed in October 2005.
+
"Wilson began preparing another thematic work after he was commissioned by London's Southbank Centre to help kick off the venue's 2007 season. The result was 'That Lucky Old Sun,' a concept album based on the American vocal standard and including the participation of his SMiLE band, as well as Van Dyke Parks. 'That Lucky Old Sun' premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in September 2007 and was released as a studio album later that year.
+
"Wilson returned to the studio two years later, this time to put his own stamp on a number of George Gershwin covers. At the behest of Gershwin's estate, he also completed two piano compositions that were unfinished by Gershwin at the time of his death.
+
"'Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin' was released in August 2010, marking Wilson's first album for the Disney-affiliated Pearl label. Wilson's second project for Pearl, 'In the Key of Disney,' arrived the following year, and featured 11 classic Disney songs." -- William Ruhlmann & John Bush, Rovi.

SHOW OF THE WEEK,
in Altadena:
8 pm RUN BOY RUN plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; phone for reservations 626-798-6236.
+
The Guide was there when they first played the venue. Holy cow. They are dazzling.
+
"When I hear Run Boy Run, it all comes back to me, why I started doing that show back then. I hope they go on forever." - Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Second time here. Absolutely sensational. Bring anyone and everyone and show them what The Coffee Gallery Backstage is all about. Read the copy. Huge accomplishments. We will, we must fill every seat. It is that kind of act.”
+
This is a most exciting young band from Tucson, Arizona. They won the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest and have been featured twice this year on A Prairie Home Companion. They have a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time/bluegrass style, and feature a unique instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass, along with three female lead singers with beautiful harmonies. Press quotes "Hot instruments and beautiful, sweet harmony singing - that's all you need in the world today!" -Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion. Existing in the tension between tradition and frontier, Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest winner and Two Time Prairie Home Companion guests, Run Boy Run, truly exceeds the sum of its parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of the band’s unique sound. Band members include Matt Rolland (Fiddle/Guitar), Grace Rolland (Cello/Vocals), Bekah Sandoval (Fiddle/Vocals), Jen Sandoval (Mandolin/Vocals), and Jesse Allen (Bass). Called by Paste Magazine "one of the top ten Arizona bands to hear now", Run Boy Run self-released their full-length album "So Sang the Whippoorwill" in March 2013 to critical regional and national acclaim.
+
From winning the band contest at Pickin’ in the Pines in the first weeks of forming in 2009 to playing on stage at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival as band contest winners in 2012,to making a second appearance on A Prairie Home Companion in 2013,Run Boy Run is spreading this special brand of music to all who would hear. Run Boy Run is making more people dance, cry, and sing than ever.
+
Brother and sister, Matt (fiddle, guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello, vocals), have fiddle music running through their blood. Raised with bow and rosin on every bedside table, Run Boy Run was a natural fit. Three female lead singers – sisters -- Bekah (fiddle, vocals, guitar) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin, vocals), grew up deeply rooted in the Bluegrass festivals of Arizona, so they too found a home in Run Boy Run. Jesse Allen (bass) was brought up on opera and western swing, and grew to love the natural fusion inherent in American music. The whole truly exceeds the sum of the parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of Run Boy Run’s sound.

To celebrate the release of "Privateering," out September 10 on UMG’s Verve Records, Mark Knopfler will play four dates on the West Coast, including this one. It's the first opportunity for fans to hear "Privateering" material live. Knopfler, who is fresh from a 70-date sold-out European tour, brings the seven-piece band that helped create "Privateering" – Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Ian Thomas (drums) and Glenn Worf (bass).
+
The new music is Knopfler’s first double album of new music in his entire recording career. “The older I get, the more I want to write,” Knopfler notes. “I’m enjoying the process more than ever, writing, recording and playing live, I enjoy all of it. I’m almost tripping over songs.”
+
Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Privateering is a collection of tough tales of real people, living hard lives in difficult times. The record features musicians Knopfler has been working with for years and special guests including Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Kim Wilson, (harmonica), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), and rising singing star Ruth Moody, who is also a member of the leading roots group The Wailin’ Jennys.
+
Of the new release, Knopfler explains, “I chose to make a double album this time just because of the sheer volume of material. I didn’t want to separate songs into genres and I didn’t want to leave too many songs on the shelf. I just wanted it to be a reflection of the fantastic sessions we had. With a great bunch of players, it’s the same as a great group of actors reading a script from the page, the thing can come alive in ways it just never has before. This is the band I have been working towards my whole life.”
+
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer-songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Walk of Life.”

He has collaborated withthe notable artists who include Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Emmylou Harris and Van Morrison, as well as scoring several films including "Cal," "Local Hero," "Princess Bride," and "A Shot at Glory."

Time tba Blues prodigy JONNY LANG plays the California Canyon Theater in Beverly Hills.
+
He has only this one local date on his current world tour.
+
He's touring his first new studio album in seven years, "Fight For My Soul," which comes out Sep 17 on Concord Records, and it's getting fine reviews.
+
Lang’s songwriting on "Fight For My Soul," the follow up to his 2006 GRAMMY Award-winning "Turn Around," takes a major leap forward, as he explores the struggle for love and family with startling heart and depth.
+
The Wall Street Journal, who premiered the album with a pre-release album stream observed, “Lang has done plenty of growing up since his precocious teenage years, and it shows in the 11 songs on 'Fight for My Soul'.”
+
USA Today calls “Blew Up (The House)”, the album’s first single, “…an incendiary blues-rock stomper about taking extreme measures to make a fresh start.”
+
“This album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” offers Lang. “Some of these songs may surprise people, but that’s what it's all about. It keeps it fresh, and it keeps me growing. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on record so far. Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs.”
+
Lang has toured non-stop since his first major label album "Lie To Me" was released in 1997 when he was 16. That won him a large and incredibly loyal audience, along with a well deserved reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation.
+
Now in the midst of touring to support the new album, Jonny will make a special hometown "CD Release Day" stop in Fargo, North Dakota at The Fargo Theatre. Fargo may not be a blues town, but it will be that day.

Sun, Oct 27, in L.A.:
5:30 pm Annual "EEK! AT THE GREEK" returns to the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont, in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.
+
Hailed as a "Great halloween tradition," this event comes close to the season clising
Godd Greek Theatre, Los Angeles It wasn't as good as last year and for some reason there were fewer people, but it was fun nevertheless. The mix was a little off for the first song or perhaps I was just getting used to it, but it adjusted. The tale-tell heart wasn't nearly as good as it was the year before, and the kids choir was a little much, although they had two good songs for them, including one from the Harry Potter series. They added another spoken word piece this year that both me and my girlfriend really liked. I also really liked the closing John Williams piece and the mix (if you can call it that) of Bach's toccata & Fugue and Grieg's Hall of the mountain king. What was also nice was that it was a really clear night and afterwards we went up to the observatory.
Greek Theatre, Los Angeles I loved how mostly everyone, adults and children, were in costumes. The decor was great and fun. The Porsche 911 was a nice touch. Although there were children around the full bar was at a distinct area. Pinks hot dogs and nachos were yummy however they need to supply jalapenos or some type of chilies. The entertainment was great. The orchestra and the readings very entertaining. I will have a suggestion is to maybe schedule it either on a friday night or saturday night. I noticed some people left after intermission."
+
Review from "asnoopyb516," Greek Theatre, Los Angeles: "This has quickly become a family tradition. We went last year and again this year. Maestro Rubenstein was funny and fabulous. The music program was awesome, and both Anne Marie Johnson and Robert Hayes gave incredible readings. I would highly recommend going to next year's event!"
+
Review from "ldcoultre," Greek Theatre, Los Angeles: "Love this event! Close, affordable, family-friendly. A lot of fun and a lot of wonderful music we don't get to hear anywhere else. A clever theme enthusiastically rendered.... so L.A. to be outside on a crisp fall night under a full moon, enjoying it all! Thank you again to all the sponsors, the artists, and the participants for a lovely evening!"

Fri, Nov 15, at UCLA:
8 pm CHARLES LLOYD & FRIENDS play the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) series in Royce Hall at UCLA.
+
“A technical descendant of John Coltrane and Dewey Redman, tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd has a way of touching the soul with his tender, folk-tinged melodies.” -- Seattle Times.
+
“There has not been a saxist whose work is this spiritual since John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.” --The Boston Globe
+
Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA presents a rare Los Angeles performance from saxophone great Charles Lloyd, backed by the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell alongside Eric Harland on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass.
+
Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s “Dream Weaver” and “Forest Flower,” Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary ECM albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and more.
+
This special configuration includes key members of Lloyd’s creative and versatile “new quartet” — drummer and bandleader Eric Harland and adventurous bassist Reuben Rogers. Bill Frisell, one of “the big three” in jazz guitar (along with John Scofield and Pat Metheny) joins the ensemble for a revelatory evening of jazz performance.
+
“Music is a healing force,” the 75-year-old Lloyd says. “It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly; it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty. We must go forward, all the great ones that went before us insisted on this. For each generation, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and sing the song - the journey and pursuit is unending.”
+
Tix: general tickets ($30-$50) are available at cap.ucla.edu, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 310-825-2101, or in person at the UCLA Central Ticket Office located in the southwest corner of the James West Alumni Center.

Sit back and let The Lindy Sisters -- Lynette, Loralie, and Linda Lou -- take you on a sentimental journey as you enjoy the vibrant and poignant works of Glenn Miller, Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Kay Kyser, Benny Goodman, Kitty Kallen, Harry James, and many more. With a live band and a perfect blend of comedy, nostalgia and audience participation, this show is a slam-dunk hit for audiences who appreciate the music and history of the WW II era.
+
Singing together seems as natural as breathing to this trio, who have quickly become one of the most sought-after specialty acts in the Los Angeles area. Masters of 1940s melodies, these sweethearts have been mesmerizing audiences with their luscious harmonies from coast to coast – harmonies so tight you couldn’t slide a credit card between them. Every detail of their act from the scrumptious vocal arrangements to the seamed stockings and ruby red lips smacks of classic vintage swing.

Hold onto your fedora and grab your stompers (yes, there will be a dance floor) and head back in time to an era when things were simpler, it was easy to tell the good guys from the bad, and America was united in a common goal.
