CONCERT is
Sat, Jan 11, 2014, in Long Beach:
8 pm JONNY LANG, the Grammy award-winning blues phenomenon, performs at City National Grove of Anaheim.
+
Lang hit the scene as a prodigy instrumentalist, topping the Billboard New Artist chart with his first album at age 15. Today he stands as a mature creative force, made more sensitive, yet also toughened by life’s adventures. Lang has learned what it means to rise above hard times and to find meaning where chaos seemed to rule. With his latest release, "Fight For My Soul," he is entering a chapter wherein he has found his true voice.
+
This sense of who he wants to be is at the core of the album. Lang says, “The inspiration for the songs on the record vary widely. Some are about personal struggles, some are focused on injustices I have seen. Some are random fictional stories that hopefully can relate to people in some way that is a blessing to them. I’ve wanted to make this album for a long time. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on recordings.”
+
This grass roots approach was new to Lang, whose four earlier studio albums were written and crafted under the watch of his previous record labels. He finds it a welcome change. After Lang released his Grammy-winning "Turn Around" in 2007, he made the decision to forego the major label route and became an independent artist. The first result was 2009’s "Live At the Ryman," but "Fight For My Soul," by its nature, is his first fully realized artistic achievement through his own label, SayRai Music.
+
Lang's chosen path has brought the opportunity to interact with some of the most respected legends in music. On the way up, he's shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, Aerosmith, Sting, and Buddy Guy -- who he continues to tour with today.
+
As a 12-year-old, he began a journey in Fargo, ND, that has brought him to points across the Globe. As he looks on the near-term future, he shares, “With this album, I really look forward to bringing our music to people in places where I’ve never been before. Music is one of the greatest conveyers of ideas and emotions, and in a sense that doesn’t have as much to do with the individual performing, but the power of the connection. One of my goals is the music can be a blessing to the people listening to it in some way. And if Fight For My Soul can help somebody by making them feel better or that they’re not alone, that’s my idea of success for this album."

Hailed as one of the “most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era” by former President Bill Clinton, the legendary rock and roll band with horns, Chicago, is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six decades. From the signature sound of the Chicago horns, their iconic Vocalists, and a few dozen of ever-Classic Songs, this band’s concerts are celebrations. The band is now in their 48th consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date!

In March of 2013, Chicago’s multi-platinum two-disc bestseller, The Very Best Of Chicago, Only The Beginning charted at #1 on two Billboard charts: the Catalog Chart, and the Digital Catalog chart. In Billboard Magazine’s list of Top 100 artists of all time, Chicago came in at #13, the highest charting American band.

Chicago is currently recording new songs. Fans are being offered clips of works in progress on the band’s website, www.chicagotheband.com. The band is planning on releasing two songs at a time digitally throughout this year and then eventually compiling them into a CD or some other format. One of these songs is a cover of the great Spiral Starecase hit, “More Today Than Yesterday.” The first new Chicago song released was “Somethin’ Comin,’ I Know,” which was recorded on the road. A new studio track, “America,” was released on September 24, 2013. CNN called it the “Shutdown Song.”

Lifetime achievements include a Grammy Award, multiple American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Chicago street dedicated in their honor, and keys to and proclamations from an impressive list of US cities. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 34 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards.

The line-up includes original band members Robert Lamm on keyboards, vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone and Walt Parazaider on woodwinds, as well as Jason Scheff on bass, vocals, Tris Imboden on drums, Keith Howland on guitar, Lou Pardini on keyboards, vocals and Wally Reyes on percussion.

In case you missed it…

Yesterday in history, October 30, 75 years ago in 1938, the infamous "WAR OF THE WORLDS" radio broadcast scared millions of Americans half to death. Though it was clearly labeled as an episode of ORSON WELLES’ and JOHN HOUSEMAN’s "Mercury Theater of the Air," those tuning-in late heard simulated newscasts that seemed all to believable in an age when radio broadcast the Hindenburg disaster, Japan's invasion of China and the "Rape of Nanking," the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby, and Hitler's marching into countries surrounding Germany.

"MIGHTY MET WEEKEND" on 100.3 The Sound from L.A. brings back from the dead, in time for Dia de Los Muertos, the long-lost lamented greatest rock & roll radio station in the world -- with most of the original air staff, and beloved characters like "Dr. Leon" ("abba-loot-lee!")
+
Remember when "A little bit o' heaven, 94.7, KMET, reedle-dee!" was everybody's favorite radio jingle?
+
Before the official announcement, the Guide received the word early. Here's what we know so far:
+
JEFF GONZER and ACE YOUNG will kick it off at 3 pm Friday, Nov 1. Then, more of your favorite KMET DJs will rock it all weekend, right up through the return of DR. DEMENTO at 6 pm on Sunday, Nov 3.
+
CYNTHIA FOX says, "The on-air schedule is still taking shape – and we’ll be announcing more details soon – but, for now… JEFF GONZER, ACE YOUNG, DR. DEMENTO, JACK SNYDER, PARAQUAT KELLEY, RICK LEWIS, RICK SCARRY, BILLY JUGGS, DR. LEON, FRAZER SMITH, RAUOOL, DAVID PERRY, and yours truly are IN!"
+
She adds, "Oh, and… What would a Mighty Met Weekend be without the return of JIM LADD to local FM, on loan from... SiriusXM Satellite Radio?"
+
It'll be global in the web at:
+
http://thesoundla.com/
+
Before the "Big Broadcast of 2013" gets here, you can leave them a voicemail with your own Mighty Met memories by calling 888-993-9994. They may use yours on the radio.
+
This will occasion parties and gatherings of KMET's legendary "Immoral Minority," no doubt with the recorded voice of Ronald Reagan yelling, "Aw, Shut-Up!" (You had to be there. But now you can.)
+
Meantime, you can buy PARAQUAT KELLEY’s book, "And There Will Always Be Termites," on Amazon for only $9.99. Cynthia Fox says, "In the face of incredible adversity, Pat keeps us laughing. I know his book will inspire you, just as he does all of us who worked with him at KMET."
+
Just released October 18, 2013, the book is the autobiographical tale of "A golden couple" who travels from celebrity to wheelchair on a journey of survival, reinvention, and inspiration. This is the compelling and powerful story of PATRICK KELLEY and MELODY ROGERS.
+
Patrick Kelley gained fame as a breakthrough radio star. He was so successful that his radio name -- Paraquat -- strange and edgy at first, became well-known and accepted both on and off the air. He fell in love with and married Melody Rogers, who is legendary in Los Angeles broadcasting.
+
Patrick has been battling an insidious disease for too many years now. While it may have physically brought him to his knees at times, he stands taller than ever — sharply observant and never losing that famous Patrick Kelley sense of humor.
+
"And There Will Always Be Termites" is the real adventure told by Patrick and Melody in their own words. It's a bumpy ride at times, but you're not going to want to get off. The book is available at:
+
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G0ZQRTM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

(amazon.com, ASIN: B00G0ZQRTM); Text-to-Speech is available for Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle (2nd generation), and Kindle DX. $9.99.

+
The Pasadena Folk Music Society starts out the month of November with Dan Crary is a guitarist extraordinaire, and he’s bringing his band Thunderation. The Folk Society’s gurus tell us, “We manage to get Dan, originally from Kansas City, Kansas, in our series once a decade, so you don't want to miss this one! He first appeared here in the 1980s with Byron Berline (still one of the great bluegrass fiddlers of our time) and Jim Hickman in the all-star bluegrass band that at various times was called Sundance, BCH, Berline, Crary and Hickman with Spurgin & Moore, and California. His next Caltech show, in the nineties, was a solo appearance, and we well remember how he immediately grabbed our attention from the start of the program, with that professorial voice (he once was a professor at Cal State Fullerton), and, of course, that masterful flat picking guitar work. Then, in 2002, he brought his buddy, Italian guitarist, Beppe Gambetta, along and we were treated to a pair of dazzling guitarists egging each other on.”
+
For this Caltech show, Dan is joined by his current band, Thunderation, which consists of Texan Steve Spurgin on bass, vocals, and writer of some fine songs, along with Martin Stevens, a tremendous fiddler and mandolin player from the Pacific Northwest, who also plays with the Bluegrass Regulators when he's not touring with Dan.

THREE OF A KIND is Wes Wright, Phil Schwadron, & Steven Schwadron. Having played together for the better part of the last eight years as members of The Poxy Boggards, this trio has begun branching-out on their own to bring the best of their original and traditional Celtic-flavored songs to the local public houses.
+
Wes (guitar and harmonica), Phil (field drum and keyboards), and Steven (mandolin and bass guitar) have developed their instrumental talents over the years at Renaissance Faires, Celtic Festivals and local music venues. They have also honed their ability to harmonize in the best styles of the classic folk groups of the '60s and '70s, and have crafted arrangements that demonstrate the joy of blending three voices into one. Three of a Kind's first CD, titled "ALL IN," is currently being recorded and scheduled for release in early 2014.
+
Plus,
SPORTIVE TRICKS plays Celtic Folk with a Kick. A Southern California folk-rock band with a heavy Irish influence, The Tricks take great delight in giving traditional music a strong beat and an interesting twist. They also play many original tunes, both serious and silly.

Drawing on the rich traditions of Irish, Scottish & English folk, Cape Breton music and sea shanties played on traditional instruments with new arrangements, high energy and a dash of humor for a foot tapping, hand clapping, good time.

WE THE FOLK are a Los Angeles-based quintet made up of violin, guitar, accordion, bass, and percussion that integrates world folk music with indie pop and rock. Like all great things, We the Folk was created over a can of PBR in a Culver City bar. That night, history was made. We the Folk began the musical journey with pop-up performances around UCLA, gaining many loyal fans who appreciated their impromptu approach to their artistry. Soon after UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance gained notice and asked them to open for the likes of David Grisman and David Lindley, and again for an experimental theater show Cheek by Jowl. We the Folk recently played the Hilton Hotel for 91x Radio’s New Year celebration in San Diego. The band just launched a Youtube channel featuring the progress of some of their work on arranged covers and original songs. Check it out at www.youtube.com/wethefolkmusic

Fri-Sun, Nov 1-3,
on broadcast & web radio:

7 pm “BUTLER'S COFFEE’s FIVE YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY” brings performances by CHUCK B. ROBERTS, and JOHN ZIPPERER & FRIENDS (John, Tara, Jimi, & Barrett), and TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS, at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale; www.butlerscoffee.com/
+
Yep, it's been five years since “the little coffeehouse that could” first threw open its doors, offering the Antelope Valley a coffee alternative to push-button corporate brew and gas station battery acid. And for those five years, Butler's has played host to the community, giving friends, lovers, students, business people, musicians, artists and writers a place to work -- and to play.
+
Come out and join Pam, Dave, their hard-working staff, Grant the Sound Guy, Kevin Burton Smith -- the Butler’s Coffee Music Guy, and the venue’s old pals, as they celebrate five years of showing what a community-based business can do.
+
In addition to the music and fun, there’s great food and drink. And maybe even cake.

"LAUREN ADAMS BAND This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion and MARK 'POCKET' GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S 'Evangeline' with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song 'Thirsty,' title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional-relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly 'Americana Music Circle' showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." — Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
+
"One listen and I was hooked. Superb, intelligent, thought-provoking songs. Real songs for real people wrapped in melodies that, promise to capture, inspire and pull the listener in again and again. Fri-Sun, Nov 1-3,
on broadcast & web radio:
+
(amazon.com, ASIN: B00G0ZQRTM); Text-to-Speech is available for Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle (2nd generation), and Kindle DX. $9.99.

". . . I am sure that our work has much in common – and indeed in the most important respects: In what you call the ‘unlogical’ and I call the ‘elimination of the conscious will in art’. . . . Every formal procedure which aspires to traditional effects is not completely free from conscious motivation. But art belongs to theunconscious! One must express oneself! Express oneself directly! Not one’s taste, or one’s upbringing, or one’s intelligence, knowledge or skill. Not all theseacquired characteristics, but that which is inborn, instinctive. . . . But whoever is capable of listening to himself, recognizing his own instincts, and also engrossing himself reflectively in every problem, will not need such crutches. One does not need to be a pioneer to create in this way, only a man who takes himself seriously – and thereby takes seriously that which is the true task of humanity in every intellectual or artistic field: to recognize, and to express what one has recognized!!! This is my belief.”

8 pm SARAH McQUAID plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations (by phone only) at 626-798-6236.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “This is a national act who tours America, and the world, constantly. We get her about once every four years. Do not miss her. A Big Deal.”
+
SARAH McQUAID’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine” (Minor 7th). A captivating performer, she seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument.
+
Her musical output reflects her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and now lives in rural England. Refusing to be pigeonholed, she spans the genres with both her beautifully crafted originals and her interpretations of material from around the globe and down the centuries.

Sarah’s third solo album The Plum Tree and the Rose has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable,” wrote fRoots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.” www.sarahmcquaid.com “Likely to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.” — Aled Jones, BBC Radio 2

7:30 pm "JOHNNY CASH: THE LIFE" is a Book Discussion with author ROBERT HILBURN at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (entrance on Figueroa), L.A. 90015.
+
FREE, reservation required.
+
Having just marked the 10 year anniversary of Johnny Cash’s death this, his status as one of the greatest music legends continues to grow. In "Johnny Cash: The Life" (Little, Brown; Oct 29, 2013), veteran music journalist Robert Hilburn writes the long-awaited, definitive biography on Cash. It is the book Cash’s millions of fans have been waiting for, and it is the book that will lead a new generation to discover his incredible musical legacy.
+
Hilburn, one of the most widely read and respected pop music writers, was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times for more than three decades. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee, he has reported extensively on music legends, including Bob Dylan, Elton John, Bruce Springrsteen, U2, Michael Jackson, and John Lennon.
+
Hillburn knew Cash well, reporting on him at many different points in his career from the legendary Folsom Prison concert in 1968 — where he was the only music journalist attending — to his wrenching last days.
+
In "Johnny Cash: The Life," Hilburn tells the complete story of Johnny Cash for the first time. Hilburn treats Cash with the critical eye and historical scholarship that an artist of his stature deserves.
+
Despite his enormous popularity, and cross-over appeal (with the rare honor of induction in the Country, Rock and Roll and Gospel Hall of Fames), Cash was an even more important and influential artist and a more complex, troubled person than even his biggest fans have realized yet. Hilburn shares a trove of never-before-seen material, straight from the singer’s inner circle of family and friends.
+
The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Hilburn to the Clive Davis Theater to discuss the phenomenal career of Johnny Cash, as well as the development of the book, just days after its release. After the discussion, moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, Hilburn will sign copies of the book.

She doesn’t get to the West Coast very often these days. With her formidable songwriting, soaring soprano voice, and lyrics in both English and Spanish, she’s someone you must hear.
+
With her release, "Culture Swing", Hinojosa won the NAIRD Award for “Best Folk Album.”
+
Over eleven subsequent ralbums, countless tours of North America and Europe, Hinojosa has developed a loving and loyal audience and has explored a wide range of musical expression. Her music and social activism has won her numerous awards and accolades, including recognition by Fox TV's Bravo Honors and a Las Primeras (The Firsts) Award from MANA, the largest organization of Latina women. Hinojosa is frequently asked to appear at events, make cultural contributions and work on behalf of children, bilingual education, civil liberties, immigration, farm workers, multicultural organizations, and other humanitarian causes. Tish was also invited to perform at The White House for President and Mrs. Clinton.
+
Linda Ronstadt recorded Hinojosa's songs -- among many other artists. Tish has recorded with Lucinda Williams, Joan Baez, Dwight Yoakum, Kris Kristofferson, Albert Lee and Nancy Griffith to name just a few. Along the way, Tish has performed with various eminent symphonies throughout the United States.

7:30 pm "DIVIDED & UNITED - MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR" is the latest in the live performance series, "The Drop," at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl Ste. A245 (entrance on Figueroa), Los Angeles 90015; 213-765-6800; www.grammymuseum.com
+
This one is truly an unusual cause to celebrate: An all-star project with music that's a hundred and fifty years old? Yep.
+
Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, T Bone Burnett, Chris Hillman, John Doe, Lee Ann Womack, and other music luminaries are on this album.
+
"Divided & United" is technically a cover album, but you aren't likely to own any of the originals. After inspiration struck while on location in Nashville (and with some help from a "Tennessean" newspaper cover story) Randall Poster, a music supervisor best known for his work with Wes Anderson, Martin Scorcese and Todd Haynes, set about curating an anniversary tribute album of classic Civil War songs.
+
Teaming up with ATO Records, Poster hand-picked the performers to participate in the project.
+
After extensive research in collaboration with master bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton, Poster assembled a collection of songs to "represent hope and loss, camaraderie and compassion, and the distinct voices of the North and South; born out of specific battles and turning points" including but not limited to "sentimental, parlor songs and spirituals of the period, songs that soldiers brought into battle with them, abolition and minstrel songs.
+
Exploring the country's deep musical history and revitalized by artists themselves through this part of its continued evolution comrs "Divided & United." It offers a "unique window on the past, with themes exploring race, identity and reconciliation in a manner that echoes profoundly today."
+
To help celebrate the release, the GRAMMY Miseum presents a panel discussion, and live music performance. The panel is moderated by Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman. It will explore the making of the album, featuring panelists Poster, Chris Hillman, John Doe and Lee Ann Womack. After the panel, Hillman, Doe and Womack will perform.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in person at the Museum Box Office or online. All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum. American Express is the exclusive payment method for advance tickets. Doors at 7 pm.

Fri, Nov 15, at UCLA:
8 pm CHARLES LLOYD & FRIENDS play the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) series in Royce Hall at UCLA.
+
“A technical descendant of John Coltrane and Dewey Redman, tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd has a way of touching the soul with his tender, folk-tinged melodies.” -- Seattle Times.
+
“There has not been a saxist whose work is this spiritual since John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.” --The Boston Globe
+
Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA presents a rare Los Angeles performance from saxophone great Charles Lloyd, backed by the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell alongside Eric Harland on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass.
+
Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s “Dream Weaver” and “Forest Flower,” Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary ECM albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and more.
+
This special configuration includes key members of Lloyd’s creative and versatile “new quartet” — drummer and bandleader Eric Harland and adventurous bassist Reuben Rogers. Bill Frisell, one of “the big three” in jazz guitar (along with John Scofield and Pat Metheny) joins the ensemble for a revelatory evening of jazz performance.
+
“Music is a healing force,” the 75-year-old Lloyd says. “It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly; it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty. We must go forward, all the great ones that went before us insisted on this. For each generation, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and sing the song - the journey and pursuit is unending.”
+
Tix: general tickets ($30-$50) are available at cap.ucla.edu, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 310-825-2101, or in person at the UCLA Central Ticket Office located in the southwest corner of the James West Alumni Center.

Sit back and let The Lindy Sisters -- Lynette, Loralie, and Linda Lou -- take you on a sentimental journey as you enjoy the vibrant and poignant works of Glenn Miller, Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Kay Kyser, Benny Goodman, Kitty Kallen, Harry James, and many more. With a live band and a perfect blend of comedy, nostalgia and audience participation, this show is a slam-dunk hit for audiences who appreciate the music and history of the WW II era.
+
Singing together seems as natural as breathing to this trio, who have quickly become one of the most sought-after specialty acts in the Los Angeles area. Masters of 1940s melodies, these sweethearts have been mesmerizing audiences with their luscious harmonies from coast to coast – harmonies so tight you couldn’t slide a credit card between them. Every detail of their act from the scrumptious vocal arrangements to the seamed stockings and ruby red lips smacks of classic vintage swing.

Feb 9, 2014, in Long Beach:
8 pm CHICAGO plays the Long Beach Terrace Theatre in Long Beach.
+
The multi-platinum, Grammy® award-winning band Chicago will perform at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre on Sunday, February 9. Playing their unforgettable collection of music and most popular hits, such as “Just You ‘n’ Me,” “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “Old Days,” “25 Or 6 To 4,” “Saturday In The Park,” “You’re The Inspiration” plus many more!
