Praised as “the new voice of the American rock-and-roll songbook” (Billboard) with both Grammy- and Tony-award nominations, charismatic performer Michael Cavanaugh opens Pacific Symphony’s 35th anniversary Pops season with crowd-pleasing pop and rock piano hits during his new show, “Michael Cavanaugh: Songs of Elton John and More.”
+
Handpicked by another famous pianist, Billy Joel, to star in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out” in 2001, Cavanaugh quickly gained a reputation for his skillful talents on the piano and lead vocals rivaling those of the “Piano Man” himself. After the musical closed in 2005, he began touring on his own, reinterpreting the modern pop/rock songbook, and eventually bringing his “Songs of Billy Joel and More” to a full house at the Symphony’s Fourth of July concert in 2009. Cavanaugh returns to bring his exuberant energy to the music of the “Rocket Man,” for a performance of songs such as “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Benny and the Jets,” “Daniel,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Candle in the Wind” and more—all backed by the lush sounds of the Symphony.

+
HONEYSUCKLE POSSUMS: The Honeysuckle Possums are an all-woman, old-time fiddling, mountain music, bluegrass band. They sing stunning 3 part harmonies all whilst dancing, whooping, and hollering. They are accompanied by an Appalachian style flat foot dancer, Ruth Alpert, whose percussive feet make it hard for the crowd not to dance and holler along with them. The Possums have been together for 3 incredible and busy years and will be releasing their first CD this fall. They have played all over the California coast and continue to gain notoriety wherever they play for their incredible vocals, musicianship and lively fun spirited style. They have played on the big stage at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention and will be back again playing at the festival this year by popular demand. The Possums play a combination of covers and originals ranging from old time fiddler standards to bluegrass and Irish folk music. The three main lead singers, Rebecca Troon (banjo/fiddle/penny whistle), Nicola Gordon (fiddle/ukelele) and Susan Marie Reeves (guitar/strumstick/ukelele) are all accomplished songwriters. Lisa Macker plays stand up bass and mandolin and sings harmonies and Ruth Alpert is the band’s percussive flat-footer. They can’t help but smile while they sing as you’ll see by their beaming faces. Check ‘em out at www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYthvCRcQn8

SABRINA & CRAIG: A musical partnership of two experienced solo artists who have combined talents to perform as a duo for the past five years. They bring a lively and unique mix of cover tunes and originals that entertain across the generations. Craig sings and anchors the duo with his unique and finely-crafted guitar style which won him second place at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle finger style guitar competition. Sabrina adds her honey-sweet vocals and dynamic stage presents along with percussion and ukulele. They have delighted audiences at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, LA Wim Soiree, The M Bar, Kulak’s Woodshed and Fireside. They are also the founders and performing hosts of the Acoustic L.A.-Live monthly show. More at www.sabrinaandcraig.com
+
MERLIN SNIDER: Is a singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitar player in the Americana story-telling tradition. His music is a soulful blend of folk-blues and alternative country. He is "about as fine a songwriter and story teller as you're likely to find," wrote "Wildy's World." Bob Stane, producer of The Coffee Gallery Backstage, said Merlin "is the genuine article when it comes to wit and humor . . . in other words he delivers the real goods." It sounds like roots music, but the lyrics have a modern edge, honesty and sense of humor." Snider's second album, Right Here, was among the Top Folk Albums for 2009, as reported on Folkradio.org. And Folkworks.org heralded Right Here as “a ‘must have’ for connoisseurs of the singer-songwriter, folk genre.” Snider was a Premiere Showcase Artist at the Folk Alliance Region West 2009 Conference, and has performed at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, Fireside Concerts in Newbury Park, Camarillo Café, as well as Boulevard Music, Noble House Concerts, The Underwood Family Farms Folk Festival, Acoustic L.A. Live!, at Hallenbeck’s General Store, and the West Valley Music Center Acoustic Series. Merlin is accompanied by Deborah Snider on backup vocals and percussion along with the rest of his Pretty Good Acquaintances. More at www.merlinsnider.com
