GRAMMYS tonight; things to do on the Final Day at NAMM -- Jan 26, 2014

.
It's a big day in the music world, and the biggest reasons are both in Southern California. It's the final day of the NAMM Show, where more than 90,000 people in the music industry have congregated to see and hear instruments, bands and gear, and tonight, the 56th Annual GRAMMY AWARDS are televised from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

GRAMMYS QUICKIE

Let's face it: the GRAMMY broadcast tonight on CBS really doesn't offer much for Folk-Americana fans. The West Coast airtime is three hours after it happened, and the few Grammys awarded in "our" music genres are not featured on TV, anyway.

The highlight -- maybe the only reason to watch at all -- is the "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT GRAMMY" being presented to the two surviving members of THE BEATLES, and it comes 50 years to the day after their 45 rpm single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit the US charts.  Both PAUL McCARTNEY and RINGO STARR remain vital and active parts of today's music, and both are known for the ability to make a witty remark.  That part should be interesting.

Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s, and flourished internationally. It represented elegance, glamour, functionality & modernity. Its linear symmetry was a distinct departure from the flowing, asymmetrical, organic curves of its predecessor, Art Nouveau. Luna’s new Art Deco guitar has a clean, crisp design that perfectly reflects the Deco movement. The mother-of-pearl inlay, stunning against ebony, is a perfect example of Deco minimalism. These instruments merge elegance and functionality that add-up to a truly exceptional instrument. More at www.lunaguitars.com/acousticproduct/artistdeco.php

√  (all day) MERIDA GUITAR / VISION MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, booth 1018 (Hall E) - Billed as a “Blindfold Comparison Challenge”, Merida has invited Martin Guitars®, Taylor Guitars® and Fender's Guild® brand to bring the best of their instruments to the 2014 NAMM Show. There, a blindfold will be placed on retail buyers who will have the opportunity to vote with their ears. The move was prompted by recent headlines “Fender® reported to begin selling direct”, and by the desire for Merida to show how demonstrating sound performance over brand name can help protect independent dealers from this new direct selling trend. According to Mike Spremulli, president of Vision Musical Instruments and distributor of Merida guitars, it’s time to take off the gloves. “This exercise is not just about Fender® and we all know that,” he stated. “It’s really about how sound and performance is the best protection from factory direct selling at the brick and mortar level. Times have changed and we need to change with them. Sound and performance cannot be sold over the Internet. Sound and performance is what the independent dealer needs to start promoting if they expect to compete with manufacturer direct selling. We want to prove this at the NAMM show by calling out these three guitar giants, regardless of their current selling policies, and let the chips fall where they may.” To prove his point even further, Spremulli is directly inviting Martin®, Taylor® and Fender’s® Guild® brands to submit their own dreadnought cutaway models; the very best they can cherry pick for this blindfold challenge. Of course, if they choose not to bring their best to the party, he says he will supply his own Martin®, Taylor® and Fender’s® Guild® guitars so your retail staff can still participate and start thinking about selling performance over brand with every product category in your store. It's bilked as a very-public "bare-knuckle comparison."
