Monday’s post-NAMM live music scene, Jan 27, 2014
.
There IS life after NAMM, and some of the fine performers who came to town for trhe vent are still here (temporarily) to perform for you. That includes guitar virtuoso VICKI GENFAN, playing tonight at 8 pm.
We are working on several News Features for you about all the new things we learned at NAMM. But here is your no-waiting guide to venturing forth tonight. There is some exceptionally wonderful stuff out there that you can only catch tonight.
Today, January 27, is the birthday of commentators ED SCHULTZ and KEITH OLBERMANN. It is also “Thomas Crapper Day,” named for the inventor of the flush toilet, and it narrowly misses being “National Kazoo Day,” which perhaps would have added to the humor.
On to tonight. Let’s get started.

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE, " is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”

VICKI GENFAN with CHRISTIE LENEE is a real wowsa deal in an intimate venue, two headliners for only $15.
+
Bob Stane, the venue’s impresario, says, “We could get them for only a week night. The tour would not allow for a weekend so you get a bargain. This is major guitar work and a delightful show. Bring yourself and those who are fans of six-string.” Bob noted after Vicki's last turn at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, "Excellent guitarist and charming act. Book her anytime that you can get her. Of the ilk of Laurence Juber. She charmed them all and impressed everyone. All should know about her. Insist all should catch this sterling show of guitar and wit."
+
And she is a fine singer. She moves you. Guitar World says, “Using 29 alternate tunings and the percussive technique she calls 'slap-tap', Vicki Genfan creates waves of sound with two hands and her voice. Drawing from folk, jazz, pop, soul and world music, whether covering the tunes of others or presenting her own compositions, Vicki has a distinctive style that is pushing the boundaries of the singer/songwriter genre.”
+
“I understand completely why the audience applauds and whistles so wildly...this is fiery, living music.” -- IndieMusic.com.
+
When Vicki Genfan won the title of Guitar Superstar in the competition sponsored by Guitar Player Magazine, Jim Fusilli of the Wall Street Journal said, "“It's a stunning victory, a barrier shattered. Guitar Player is a male-dominated domain. The magazine is often a tribute to speed, power, volume and gear. Ms. Genfan plays an acoustic guitar without effects." Using 29 alternate tunings and the percussive technique she calls 'slap-tap', Vicki creates waves of sound with two hands and her voice. Drawing from folk, jazz, pop, soul and world music, Vicki's distinctive style is pushing the boundaries of the singer/songwriter genre. She has been featured at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, Germany’s Open Strings Guitar Festival and Italy’s Soave Guitar Festival. Luna Guitars has unveiled the Vicki Genfan model (created by master luthier Gray Burchette) with all the bells and whistles that Vicki’s playing requires, including a Jumbo body which lends itself to the full tones she needs for her percussive style.
+
I forgive myself for forgetting what a great singer she is; it’s no wonder… her voice moves inside me as only something that comes from inside can.” ~ Frank Goodman, Pure Music
+
“After witnessing her mind-blowing performance of an original composition entitled ‘Atomic Reshuffle, ’ a panel of guitardom’s elite dubbed Vicki Genfan 2008 Guitar Superstar. Contained within the 3:57 acoustic tour-de-force was a combination of playing techniques that produced not just chords and melodies, but also bell-like harmonics and percussive rhythms. Genfan’s approaches to composition and playing stem from her desire to capture dense harmonic ingredients, her affinity for open tunings, and her dream to groove like Earth, Wind & Fire’s Verdine White.” ~ Chris Buono, Guitar Player Magazine Website: www.vickigenfan.com
+
Plus…
CHRISTIE LENEE, who delivers vibrant energy at every show. Her unique guitar work is often compared to visionaries like Michael Hedges, Bela Fleck, Andy McKee, and John Mayer- fusing folky/funky playfulness with pop/rock inspired songs and virtuosic guitar compositions. She is, as Skope Magazine states, “a refreshing burst of unrestrained love and feeling… It’s simply a joy to listen to her spirit break free.” Christie has been seen many times on stage with Tim Reynolds (guitarist for Dave Matthews Band) and a stellar cast of musicians including Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), Jeff Coffin, and Stanley Jordan. Her eclectic guitar skills have not only accompanied other great artists, but she has also played a multitude of instruments on her own records. An extensive original repertoire of both vocal and instrumental music showcases her extensive musical background, with studies including classical, jazz, rock, blues, folk and flamenco. Her innate ability to fuse these styles propels an eruption of harmonic fluidity, delivering profound expressions and a vibrant live performance.
+
Christie was recently endorsed by Engler Innovations to compose music for “The Engle,” a drumstick for guitar that launched onto the market in January of 2012. Being a compositional pioneer for this new product has inspired an abundance of innovative techniques and a unique percussive approach to the guitar. “The Engle” is featured on Christie’s new instrumental album “Chasing Infinity,” often performed on a Veillette Soprano 12 string guitar called “The Gryphon” which creates a worldly sound unlike anything ever heard. Some have compared this sound to a choir of hammered dulcimers, or what you might hear if a 12-string guitar and a mandolin had a child. Combined with “The Engle” or “guitar hammer,” you may hear songs like “Raining a Miracle” or “Eastward Horizon” and have no idea what you’re listening to until seeing it visually. Even so, watching a performance can often fool the mind to think that you are hearing multiple instruments at the same time.
