♪  THIS DAY IN HISTORY: a very special “REMEMBRANCE DAY”

February 19th is a DAY OF REMEMBRANCE for Japanese Americans, commemorating the internments during WWII in the US and Canada.

Manzanar National Historic Site is someplace you should visit. Administered by the National Park Service, it is "One Camp, Ten Thousand Lives; One Camp, Ten Thousand Stories." In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. The Manzanar NHS website includes a "Virtual Museum Exhibit," allowing you to explore the Manzanar NHS "Virtual Museum" online, which highlights more than 200 artifacts, documents and photographs from its museum collection.

Actor George Takei ("Mr. Sulu" in "Star Trek") wrote this morning, "Although it happened over 70 years ago, I still remember my mothers' tears as soldiers with bayonets marched up our driveway in Los Angeles and ordered us out of our home.

Mr. Takei’s link takes you to an Amazon page for the 2013 musical "Allegiance," about WWII interred Japanese-Americans. Here's some info about "Allegiance" the musical, from the Amazon site:

The trick is, you are not making selections from among nominees, and you must vote in at least 8 categories. So, if you don't frequent a variety of establishments in the South Bay, it might appear intimidating.

The Folk Alliance International Conference is an annual event that draws together music industry professionals from throughout the world to share ideas, network, and celebrate traditional music and dance. It is an event of celebration, education and entertainment. Unlike the regional conferences which draw local artists that might be quite good, this one draws major stars. The 2014 Folk Alliance International Conference is being held February 19-23 at the Westin Kansas City at Crown Center in Kansas City, MO.
