√  On this day in 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City. It is the largest art museum in the US, with more than three million items in its collections.

√  On this day in 1895, Civil Rights leader FREDERICK DOUGLASS died. He had successfully urged President Abraham Lincoln to accept black troops in the Civil War, and to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in territories held by the Confederacy. Douglass had himself been born a slave in 1817.

√  On this day in 1962, astronaut JOHN GLENN became the first American to orbit the Earth, and had his flight cut short after three orbits and 3 hours and 22 minutes when it was feared his spacecraft’s heat shield might have come loose. He went on to become a US Senator from Ohio, and the oldest person to travel to space as a Space Shuttle astronaut – because his Mercury spacecraft heat shield was not loose. Had it been, he would have been incinerated returning to Earth in 1962.

    √  GIBSON GUITARTOWN SUNSET STRIP CHARITY AUCTION SET FOR FEB 21

CHARITY AUCTION TO BENEFIT “MUSIC FOR RELIEF,” A NONPROFIT THAT SUPPORTS DISASTER RELIEF

The 10-foot tall Gibson guitar art sculptures that have lined THE SUNSET STRIP will end their year-long tour on Friday, February 21, 2014, when they are auctioned for charity at a gala event at Bonhams in Los Angeles. This is the third installment of the annual public art project, and all proceeds from this auction will benefit “Music For Relief,” the nonprofit organization founded by members of Linkin Park to support disaster relief, provide aid to survivors of natural disasters and support the prevention of such disasters via environmental programs. Previous auctions have generated more than $106,000 for charities.

The auction will be open to the public, with previews on February 20 and 21 from Noon-5 pm each day at Bonhams, 7601 W Sunset Bl, Los Angeles.

The charity auction will begin at 8 pm on February 21. An online catalog featuring the star studded guitar lineup will be available for review.

The 2013 GuitarTown project includes works celebrating Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Alice Cooper and Debbie Harry, among others. A range of artists participated in the 2013 installment, including Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, tattoo artist Kat Von D, tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle, who was close friends with Janis Joplin, sculptor Eugene Daub, who recently created the Rosa Parks sculpture for the U.S. capitol, and jewelry designer Kathy Rose.

The Gibson GuitarTown on The Sunset Strip project originally launched in 2010 with 24 art guitars celebrating artists including Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, The Runaways and Mötley Crüe. These guitars were auctioned for charity in 2011 with 100% of the $54,360 in proceeds benefitting local charities Los Angeles Youth Network, West Hollywood Arts & Cultural Commission and West Hollywood Library.

The 2012 GuitarTown edition raised funds for the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education’s “Arts Matter” campaign, supporting art and music education in public schools. The auction raised $52,280 and featured 18 art guitars created by internationally acclaimed and local artists, including Shepard Fairey, John Kosh and RISK and celebrated The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Stevie Nicks, British Rock Invasion and Van Halen, among others.

“We are happy to partner with Bonhams Los Angeles again this year as we host this amazing charitable auction, which generates tremendous funds for charitable organizations each year,” noted Sunset Strip Business Association executive director Todd Steadman. “We are happy to work with Gibson Guitar on this annual art project that celebrates The Sunset Strip’s music history and provides established and new artists an opportunity to enhance the boulevard with art.”

- Eugene Daub, “Blondie Sunset Strip” Mixed media guitar inspired by the music and influence of Debbie Harry, lead singer of Blondie. (Performed at the Whisky.)

- Simone Gad, “Dolly Parton and The Sunset Strip” Mixed media guitar inspired by country music legend Dolly Parton. (Performed at The Roxy.)

- Tsipi Mani, “Unvarnished” Mixed media guitar celebrating 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival honoree Joan Jett. (Performed at the Whisky.)

- Juliana Martinez, “Don Jose, Que Chévere!” Tile and mixed media guitar inspired by legendary guitarist Jose Feliciano. (Performed at The Roxy, Whisky.)

- Kathy Rose, “Alanis Morissette Utopia” Guitar embellished with semi-precious stones, natural material and mixed media. Inspired by the music and message of singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette. (Performed at the Whisky, House of Blues Sunset Strip.)

-Gregory Siff, “What A Good Song Sounds Like, 2013” Spray paint and acrylic guitar created live at the 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival.

- Mike Shinoda, “Soldier In Repose” Acrylic and spray paint. Linkin Park's first shows ever were played on Sunset Boulevard. In this illustration, the band's iconic "Hybrid Theory" soldier is shown in a moment of reflection. (Performed at The Roxy, House of Blues Sunset Strip.)
