√ Annual “KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL” runs 18 straight days, Thu, May 22-Sun, Jun 8, at Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country.

A post arrived a couple days ago from Southern Cal-based musician / bestselling author Paul Zollo: “In Kerrville with my brother-in-song Darryl Purpose. Had a beautiful time hearing the beautiful Judy Collins last night - with a wonderful tribute to the great Pete Seeger – and seeing and hearing new friends and old, like Freebo F. Freebo who is here and so many others – and all the new friends.”

That’s indicative of what happens there.
+
Celebrating songwriters for 43 years, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. It was created by Rod Kennedy, affectionately known as “The RodFather,” who died in April. In addition to concerts each evening, Kerrville features “Ballad Tree” song-sharing sessions, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for children, organized canoe trips on the Guadelupe River and Hill Country bike rides, a professional development program for teachers, as well as a three-day songwriters school and instrumental workshops. The 19th Annual USA Songwriting Competition's deadline is a few hours away. This evening is the last chance to enter your songs and / or lyrics. It is easy to enter with your YouTube, Soundcloud or Reverbnation profile URL, and that makes it fast and easy to enter. Previous entrants have been signed to record labels and music publishers and hit the charts, some even going Platinum, selling over 1 million copies.

Legendary singer-songwriter, Rodriguez, makes his Greek Theatre, LA debut on Friday, May 30. Well-known in the U.S. for his 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man,” Rodríguez's fame and music have now reached audiences worldwide.
+
Rodriguez, a self-taught guitarist, began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered post-industrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Factin 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971. These compositions went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family.

In the mid-1970s, his music gained airplay in Australia and New Zealand and he toured the area finding limited success as an overseas performer.
+
Rodriguez was unaware that he had reached legendary folk-rock super stardom status in South Africa, where mistaken rumors circulated that he had perished. As it turns out, South African anti-Apartheid activists and musicians alike were inspired by his counterculture lyrics.
+
In the late 1990s, South African fans finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career. Rodriguez now tours extensively in South Africa, Australia, Europe, and the U.S., where he takes thoughtful appreciation in greeting longtime fans, and a new generation of listeners who find common ground in his music. His albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality have since been re-released on Light in the Attic records and the Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack is available on Sony Legacy. International media attention and accolades have since been bestowed upon both the film and the music.

√ Annual “KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL” runs 18 straight days, Thu, May 22-Sun, Jun 8, at Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country.

A post arrived a couple days ago from Southern Cal-based musician / bestselling author Paul Zollo: “In Kerrville with my brother-in-song Darryl Purpose. Had a beautiful time hearing the beautiful Judy Collins last night - with a wonderful tribute to the great Pete Seeger – and seeing and hearing new friends and old, like Freebo F. Freebo who is here and so many others – and all the new friends.”

That’s indicative of what happens there.
+
Celebrating songwriters for 43 years, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. It was created by Rod Kennedy, affectionately known as “The RodFather,” who died in April. In addition to concerts each evening, Kerrville features “Ballad Tree” song-sharing sessions, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for children, organized canoe trips on the Guadelupe River and Hill Country bike rides, a professional development program for teachers, as well as a three-day songwriters school and instrumental workshops. And few people in my life have ever treated me - the songwriter me - with more love or appreciation. So on this day, in his honor, have a drink or a smoke or whatever makes you happy, and put on great music, or read a great book, and delight in the fact that humans can do this stuff. √ We noted yesterday that it was the birthday of the late LESLIE PERRY, L.A.-based storyteller, author, and Civil Rights activist. We did not realize that we should have noted another May 28 event in conjunction.

May 28, 1963, was the “Woolworth Sit-In” in Jackson, MS. John Salter, a participant wrote, "This was the most violently attacked sit-in during the 1960s. A huge mob gathered, with open police support while the three of us sat there for three hours. I was attacked with fists, brass knuckles and the broken portions of glass sugar containers, and was burned with cigarettes."

Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber and guitarist Bert Lams celebrate the release of their new concept album: Unnamed Lands. The culmination of over four years of collaboration and one of the most inspired projects either musician has ever been a part of, this all-original work tells the story of a group of wagon train pioneers heading west circa 1840. A strong progressive rock influence and adventurous sounds blend seamlessly with a highly melodic, folk-like approach into what could almost be called "Progressive Americana." The duo is honored to be joined by Chapman Stick inventor Emmett Chapman, who will perform an opening set. In addition to creating the Stick instruments, beginning in 1969, Emmett has taken his musical invention and his unique approach to improvisation to venues throughout the world.

Tom Griesgraber is one of the world’s most active players of the Chapman Stick, a unique 12-string guitar/bass hybrid. An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has performed across the US and Europe as a soloist and with his groups Marotta/Griesgraber and Agent 22.

Bert Lams is a founding member of the California Guitar Trio, and known for his affinity with the music of J.S.Bach. His recent arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for solo guitar were released on his solo CD 'Nascent'. Bert tunes his guitar in fifths; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.

Bert Lams initially gained notice in 1980 as first laureate for National Music Contest for Youth in Brussels, and went on to earn an honors degree in the study of classical guitar, at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Belgium. After attending Guitar Craft seminars with Robert Fripp, Bert Lams co-founded the CGT with Paul Richards (U.S.) and Hideyo Moriya (Japan).

Since 1993, CGT has released eleven albums and toured extensively across the world, performing their eclectic repertoire. CGT music was featured in the television coverage of the Olympics, and on CBS, NBC, CNN World Beat, and ESPN TV programs. Their music was sent into outer space to wake the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor.

Bert's solo album 'Nascent' features new arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for guitar and brings a unique twist to the classical guitar world. Not only are the pieces performed on steel string guitar with a pick, but they are also set in what's known as "New Standard Tuning"; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.

A honors graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tom Griesgraber is one of the world's most active performers on the Chapman Stick; a unique 12-string guitar and bass hybrid played more like piano with both hands sounding notes. He is an active composer and arranger for the instrument and his shows generally include a mix of original material as well as arrangements ranging from Bach to the Beatles.

Tom performs regularly across the US and Europe as a soloist or with his group Agent 22. He has also toured with the California Guitar Trio and the Tony Levin Band, performed for several Grammy events and done shows opening for artists like Stanley Jordan, Andy Summers, Steve Hackett, Steve Morse, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, The Dixie Dregs and Adrian Belew.

A post arrived a couple days ago from Southern Cal-based musician / bestselling author Paul Zollo: “In Kerrville with my brother-in-song Darryl Purpose. Had a beautiful time hearing the beautiful Judy Collins last night - with a wonderful tribute to the great Pete Seeger – and seeing and hearing new friends and old, like Freebo F. Freebo who is here and so many others – and all the new friends.”

That’s indicative of what happens there.

Celebrating songwriters for 43 years, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. It was created by Rod Kennedy, affectionately known as “The RodFather,” who died in April. In addition to concerts each evening, Kerrville features “Ballad Tree” song-sharing sessions, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for children, organized canoe trips on the Guadelupe River and Hill Country bike rides, a professional development program for teachers, as well as a three-day songwriters school and instrumental workshops. Florida-based folksinger-songwriter ANNIE WENZ has lived in Northern California, long enough to help harvest and bottle a special vintage at a winery there, and she just got back from a sailboat adventure in the Caribbean – just in time to drive to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas to perform.

Annie has a brand-new CD, just out, titled, “Rain on Bare Skin,” but we just got it and don’t have a review ready yet. Meanwhile, Annie reported this morning from Kerrville:

Just two years ago, John Fullbright released his debut studio album, From The Ground Up, to a swarm of critical acclaim. The LA Times called the record "preternaturally self-assured," while NPR hailed him as one of the "10 Artists You Should Have Known." The Wall Street Journal crowned him as giving one of the year's 10 best live performances, and the album also earned him the ASCAP Foundation's Harold Adamson Lyric Award. If there was any doubt that his debut announced the arrival of a songwriting force to be reckoned with, it was put to rest when From The Ground Up was nominated for Best Americana Album at the GRAMMY Awards, which placed Fullbright alongside some of the genre's most iconic figures. At the heart of Jamestown Revival is a friendship that spans over a decade. Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance grew up together in the small Texas town of Magnolia. From a young age, they shared a love for music as well as the outdoors. About an hour north of Magnolia TX, there was some old family land with a dilapidated ranch house where they spent the better part of their adolescence. At one point or another, music from Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Everly Brothers, to fellow Texans Willie Nelson, Guy Clark and Stevie Ray Vaughan found its way through an old pair of speakers that sat on the back porch. At the age of 22, they moved to Austin and began to craft a sound of their own. Deeply rooted in harmony, they merged the sounds of the South with classic American and Western rock. Looking for adventure, as well as a change of pace, they eventually made the decision to head west and made the move to Los Angeles. Throughout the course of the next 12 months, they wrote their debut album, "UTAH." It's heavily autobiographical, telling the stories of their adventures, their discomforts and their observations. In order to capture the spirit of the music, the two found a log cabin high within the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The pair, along with their band and engineer, set out to convert it into a temporary recording studio. With wild moose right outside the window, and aspen leaves spinning in the wind, they tracked the songs for "UTAH" live-to-tape and without headphones. Jamestown Revival is gearing up for life back out on the road with a national tour in May and June.

This is the fourth offering in the museum’s Americana series, co-sponsored by the Americana Music Association and KCSN 88.5 FM. The discussion is moderated by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, followed by a live performance.

REMEMBERING MAYA ANGELOU

"She never seemed to have an inconsequential thought, someone observed of her," noted Brian Williams of NBC.

And, oh, how those thoughts of hers translated into words.

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

"I love this quote from Maya Angelou," says western musician Ray Doyle.

When I attended the inauguration of Bill Clinton, it was important to the new president to include Maya Angelou reading a most appropriate poem, written for the occasion. No president had invited a poet since JFK had Robert Frost recite one of his originals. Her poem was, "On the Pulse of Morning." (Excerpt below.)

Maya Angelou, who was a singer and recording artist in the 1950s, became the renowned poet and author who would win three Grammys for recorded readings of her books. Along the way, she became an iconic civil rights activist and personal friend of both Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And throughout it all, as one news source declared, she brought "the unmistakably regal voice." Maya Angelou died today, May 28, at the age of 86.

She wrote more than 30 books, including her biggest bestseller, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

This morning, Roxy Riggs reminded me of the Angelou quote, "a bird doesn't sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song."

Poet Laureate of the United States Maya Angelou had many songs that took the forms of poetic prose, and they remain as her gifts to us and the future.

√  FOXING's "THE ALBATROSS," OUT TODAY ON TRIPLE CROWN RECORDS

St. Louis, Missouri-based band FOXING recently signed with Triple Crown Records, which releases a remixed and remastered version of their debut album, "The Albatross" today, May 27.  The group's tour with SEAHAVEN began this month.

It feels impossible to be a casual fan of the quintet, FOXING, and this freshly remixed and remastered version of their swelling orchestral, raw and starkly personal debut full-length "The Albatross" demonstrates why. There's a vulnerability to the band, a certain fragility that encourages a rare kind of connection between band and listener. Those who are already in the know about Foxing feel like the lucky few who've been let in early on a secret.

Each of the 10 tracks on "The Albatross" are imbued with a connective, emotional core. At the album's very center is "Rory", a spellbinding, overwhelmingly honest song rich with horn arrangements and an emotionally shattering chorus that Pitchfork called "devastating." The video for "Rory," which was conceived, shot and produced entirely by the members of Foxing, captures the song's quiet tension to gorgeous effect, with the A.V. Club explaining the video as "Wes Anderson-meets-The Wicker Man."

There name has an interesting origin. If you’ve ever looked at an old document and noticed brown spots on it, what you are seeing are signs of aging. It’s not exactly clear what specifically causes them, but one day, the page will completely brown over and be no more. This is called "foxing."

The group of St. Louis musicians seized this idea and turned it into a band. “From the conception of the band, we realized: we’re not gonna be around forever,” says Foxing singer Conor Murphy.

He continues, “There’s classic literature that over time grows really old. But hopefully, you can make something that meant something at some point and will mean something down the road, even if it is aged and dated. That’s always what keeps me going, the idea that we’re writing something now that we won’t be able to write in ten years.”

At only 21, Murphy is wise beyond his years and Foxing’s debut album, "The Albatross," is proof of that. The Albatross has an epically beautiful, almost cinematic quality to it, a fact which the band members, some of whom were film students, are acutely aware of.

Listening to their song “Rory,” along with the music video they made for it, is not only an emotionally jarring experience but highlights the fact that Foxing have a bigger picture in mind than simply making music.

It’s not just a sound, it’s a deeper, fuller concept fueled by a palpable sense of raw honesty and soul-bearing. It’s not just a band, it’s the most vulnerable parts of their lives, reflected back at them.

Coll and Murphy write the lyrics together and cull from their lives and current real-life experiences. They are open and genuine about themselves in their lyrics, almost to a fault, sometimes putting a strain on their relationships with those around them. “The people that those songs are about, there’s no way they wouldn’t know it was about them,” says Coll.

“Sometimes, there’s the desire to not put your life so far out there. But it’s also important to not hold back.”

The two have a unique process of co-editing each other’s songs. “When we were writing the record, one of the biggest things I’d talk to Conor about was: I don’t care if people like this record or not. I mean, I want people to enjoy it, but the one thing that would gut me would be if people said the lyrics are disingenuous.”

Foxing’s forthright lyrical honesty paired with their stunning orchestral sound quickly started earning them devoted fans, some of whom have been so emotionally moved that they’ve openly wept at the band’s live shows. It’s something Foxing didn’t expect and certainly were not prepared for.

“I was really surprised at the reception we got from this record because it’s very, very specific and personal so it’s weird to have people grasp that and feel a kindredness to it, that’s insane to me,” says Coll.

In addition to the new fans who were responding to Foxing’s music in such a personal way, the band also caught the attention of Triple Crown Records. The label took notice of the organic buzz surrounding the band and are re-mastering and re-releasing "The Albatross." Believing the album has a distinctly timeless quality it about it, Foxing recognized that while they’re proud of the album, it won’t hold up forever.

Much like their namesake, the pages their words are written on will eventually brown over and fade away. “The thing that binds everybody together is the idea that death is completely imminent. age is an ever-looming idea that we can all agree on,” notes Murphy.

“We make this music, we release it, and then, one day, it dies.”

For now, it's very much alive, lyrics, horns and all.

Foxing embarked May 8 on a full US tour, opening for Seahaven. They make a stop in Los Angeles to play the Troubadour on June 1.

√  Annual “KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL” runs 18 straight days, Thu, May 22-Sun, Jun 8, at Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country.

Celebrating songwriters for 43 years, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. It was created by Rod Kennedy, affectionately known as “The RodFather,” who died in April. In addition to concerts each evening, Kerrville features “Ballad Tree” song-sharing sessions, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for children, organized canoe trips on the Guadelupe River and Hill Country bike rides, a professional development program for teachers, as well as a three-day songwriters school and instrumental workshops.
