♪ NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS PLAYING LAST SHOWS FEATURING BARRY McGUIRE

THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS featured the great BARRY McGUIRE on some of their biggest hits. But, Barry, citing health issues, is retiring from his “Trippin’ the ’60s” show that he’s been performing with JOHN YORK (former BYRD), and it seems, really retiring. There are just two final appearances by Barry McGuire with The New Christy Minstrels, on Nov 2 in Cerritos, and on Nov 16 in Palm Desert. Info and ticket links for both are below.

In addition, an appearance on November 4 by Minstrels leader Randy Sparks, with Becky Jo, says Bob Stane, “maybe a lot of the members of The New Christy Minstrels, joining Randy & Becky Jo,” at The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.

By the way, in the early days of The New Christy Minstrels, I had a lot to do with furnishing Randy with individuals in the group. My clubs, the Upper Cellar and the Ice House, nurtured many, many later members of this fantastic group. Randy will tell stories of these days from then until the introduction of Vecca The Show Dog.”

News Feature #2...

♪ “SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN & CELTIC TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL

The Guide looks forward to this one every year. And on Sunday, November 2nd, you’ll get two chances to enjoy it, at 3 & 7 pm, with both shows in the SFV (North Hollywood).

They’ve played a lot with the title this year, and no wonder, because this is a very full show of Irish music and dance, together with storytelling and performed scenes. Producer Aedan MacDonnell, who also performs, tells us, “The Dead Do Tell Tales, told through song, story, music and dance.” It’s produced through her company, Celtic Rhythms, at the Mayflower Club, 11110 Victory Bl, N Hollywood 91606.

Samhain: (pronounced sow-in, like the pig) is a Celtic Halloween extravaganza. You'll hear tales of the true origins of the Jack O' the Lantern, of ghostly encounters, and the origins of All Hallows' Eve, told with high energy Irish dances, traditional Celtic tunes that will bewitch your feet and keep your toes a-tappin', ghostly love songs that will rip your heart out, and exciting dances with real swords and axe handles with the dancers in very close proximity to one another. The promo asserts, “You won't want it to end!” That’s true. It’s that good.

Aedan says, “This year we have a new line-up in outstanding musicians, as well as those that have been with the show from year one. And we also have an official Samhain song, written by Padraic Conroy, one of our new additions. He wrote two songs for the show, one is previewed on our website.”

It's another full house for a King Brothers' gig, whose unique passion and visceral interpretation of the blues attract fans from all walks of life. Rather than relying solely on tried and true blues stylings - which the Kings inherited naturally from second-cousins and blues legends Freddy and Albert King - Sam and Lee King are establishing a new standard . "It's danceable , it's rock-flavored, funk-flavored, gospel-flavored, " explains Lee of the King Brothers' music. "I don't know a damn thing about picking cotton; I don't drink whiskey; I don't dip snuff; I don't fit any of those blues-man stereotypes. We just dig it for the art form, and we're taking it where it needs to go."

Brophy Dale has gained a widespread respect for his passionate roots-rockin' guitar and vocals. He's played all over the world, from Moscow to Melbourne, Anchorage to Zurich. lived in Texas to Africa, but now calls Southern California home. He honed his guitar chops in the Midwest, mostly Ann Arbor/Detriot area in countless Rock, R'n B, Blues, Oldies, and Country bands that set him on a journey and has taken him from local bar guitar hero to an international recognized performer. Brophy's first big moment came when he got to back up the late great Memphis soul singer, O.V. Wright (Nickel and a Nail) for a few gigs. Moving out West in the late 80s, Brophy worked/toured with Robert Lucas of Canned Heat, Smokey Wilson, Joe Houston, & King Ernest to name a few, on the Southern California blues scene. He's also had the opportunity to work with some of his heroes, which include Dave Edmunds, Delbert McClinton and a few tours with Scotty Moore. The last ten years Brophy has worked steadily with Alligator recording artist Lee Rocker, a Rockabilly/Americana cat who came to fame in the '80s as bassist for the wildly popular Stray Cats. He's recorded six records, with co-writes on the last three and been on several compilation records with Lee also. Brophy's playing can be heard and on sound tracks for Kids ESPN in Japan to placement on TV shows with Lee, Numbers and the WB show Supernatural. The Brophy Dale Band is a rocking blues trio that plays in Southern California featuring Dave Gore on bass and vocals, Dave Kida on the drums and Brophy on guitars and vocals.

I Hear Voices! is a unique vocal quartet from Tucson, Arizona, that was formed in early 2012 by Bobby Kimmel, founder of The Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt, and McCabe's first concert director. Relying on uplifting material and lush vocal harmonies, they mix about half original songs with songs by other contemporary writers like Ruth Moody of the Wailin' Jennys and Gillian Welch. Their vocal sound changes with the styles of the songs they sing, from soft jazz to modern bluegrass, with interesting stops in between. Tracy Newman, who started at McCabe's playing guitar with Ricky Jay back in the day, is a Peabody- and Emmy-winning writer (Cheers, Ellen, According to Jim) who has now returned to her first career choice, folksinger. With her natural narrative, Tracy's songs are funny takes on family and insightful notes on living. Her band is top-notch, and the music is, too. What's not to like?

Tracy Newman, whose music career began when she was the youngest-ever member of the New Christy Minstrels, has gone on to earn an Emmy and a Peabody Award for her television writing. She’s still working on a Grammy for the trifecta.

The road to “Music's Biggest Night ®” begins with "A Very GRAMMY Christmas" and culminates with the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards, live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb 8, 2015, and broadcast on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT. Last year's airing of "The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown To Music's Biggest Night" helped lead to stellar ratings for the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards, which ultimately garnered more than 30 million viewers — the second-largest audience for the awards broadcast since 1993. The telecast also was the biggest social television event at that time, with 34 million social media interactions (with statistics compiled by Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter).
