Sat & Sun, Jul 18 & 19,
FREE FESTIVAL,
in Santa Barbara:
11 am-7 pm Annual “SANTA BARBARA FRENCH FESTIVAL” for Bastille Day weekend is FREE in Oak Park, 300 W Alamar Av, Santa Barbara 93105.
+
The Santa Barbara French Festival celebrates Bastille Day and all the things that make French cultural history so rich. Two days of delicious wine and food- including mimosas, crepes, and decadent pastries- as well as music, dance, crafts, and, of course, the infamous Poodles & Pals Parade! A community event not to be missed, it's a Dance Festival, a Music Festival, an Arts & Crafts Festival and a Food Festival- all in one place! It is also a great way to support Center Stage Theater and Speaking of Stories, two wonderful Santa Barbara arts organizations.
+
For two days, Santa Barbara celebrates its reputation as “the American Riviera,” as the French Festival takes over beautiful Oak Park.
+
Three stages are filled with dance and music from more than 30 different acts, including performances of the can-can, French Polynesian dancers, African Bellydancing, Burlesque, Tango, and the Femme Fatales Drag Revue. Audience members are encouraged to participate and learn, and every minute of entertainment is all free.
+
ENTERTAINERS include local favorites, the WEST COAST BALLET and SANTA BARBARA SILVER FOLLIES, along with groups from around California.
+
SECOND WIND, a 4-piece ensemble comes from Long Beach, playing French music from the ’30s to modern, with a touch of Cajun and Quebecois.
+
Los Angeles performer JEAN-PIERRE TIBBI brings classic French songs.
+
DJANGOSCHMANGO takes you on a journey to a Paris nightclub of the ’30s with their tribute to the great Django Reinhardt.
+
THE ACCORDION INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SOCIETY OF SANTA BARBARA will coordinate the third stage, dedicated to exclusively accordion performances. Fabulous accordion tunes fill the air, complete with a dance floor for those that want to take advantage and let the music move them.
+
The festival is teaming with French Bulldog Rescue to expand their “infamous” Poodles and Pals Parade. For years this great tradition as concluded the Festival on Sunday evening; this year it happens at the end of the day on both Saturday and Sunday, at 6 pm. The fun begins both days with a procession through the park, as Napoleon leads the promenade to the stage.
+
The entertainment is only part of what the French Festival has to offer – more than 60 booths offer everything from crepes and delicious French pastries to face painting and French tablecloths. Grab a mimosa as you peruse beautiful paintings and photography. Enjoy a crepe or Le Hot Dog from Pacific Crepes while shopping for your French Festival t-shirt and beret. Take a moment for a quick massage before you settle in for the next performance with a sinfully delicious croissant from Normandie Bakery, beignets or Cajun shrimp and French beer. Browse through jewelry and fashion, photographs and artwork, and more. You can try your hand at Petanque, a French lawn bowling game. Center Stage Theatre and Speaking of Stories are pleased to present this great community event, which serves as a joint fundraiser for the two organizations. Sponsors for the event include Santa Barbara Travel, Kronenbourg 1664, Perrier, The Santa Barbara Independent, HiddenProvence.com, Tent Merchants, and French Bulldog Rescue.

8 pm TERESA TUDURY plays her CD release show for her new album, "WEST OF PARADISE," at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena. Reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
This will be quite a show. Teresa will be joined onstage by DALE LaDUKE, PENNY NICHOLS, DEBORAH McCOLL, and ED TREE.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane will do just about anything to get you to experience TERESA TUDURY. He says, “She is a top singer and comedic actor. She should be packing big rooms all over America. Come on, trust Bob just this one time. Sure, the delivery of your Newspaper was late once this month but Bob stays up until 3 am and is slow in the morning. And you have yet to realize how much you like her. This is A NIGHT OF BANISHING IGNORANCE. JOIN US FOR ENLIGHTENMENT. Arise, throw off the shackles of your disbelief and experience Teresa Tudury.”
+
“Wear a brace on your funnybone and prepare to enjoy creative, intelligent music. Hold on to your seats as Teresa Tudury takes you on a musical journey of wild and powerful songs and stories from the depths of her incredibly rich and inspiring repertoire. Teresa Tudury is an absolute original. From her San Francisco roots to the Greek Islands to New York and L.A., she wakes up the music scene. Teresa creates a loyal following and rave reviews wherever she performs. Our world is richer with such a rare talent in our midst. Part chanteuse, part comedian, part bona fide pop artist…and a voice that could stop a war.” — Buzz Weekly.
+
“Picture a cross between Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt musically, and toss in the most side-splitting stage patter imaginable, and you have Ms. Teresa Tudury.” — Johnny Angel, LA Weekly.
+
Teresa will do her "tomcat song" and you will, forever, attend her shows just to request that she "sing that cat song." You will be addicted. And she is a real singer. Not just another funny person who chirps a few songs. She can really sing it.
+
“I think ‘Cheering Your Little Ass On’ is the greatest song ever written.”—Charles Perry, Rolling Stone and L.A. Times.
+
"Leonard Cohen meets Bessie Smith " – afan overheard at a Teresa concert. With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa sings with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing. Teresa has recorded or performed with such greats as Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Leo Kottke, and Bonnie Bramlett. Her latest CD before this new one, titled, “Such Fine Things,” joins recently re-released CDs “Teresa Tudury” and “River of Life” in retail stores and online music sites.

Fri, Jul 17, in SaMo:
8 pm JILL SOBULE and TAMMY FAYE STARLITE bring their “BLONDE ON BLONDE ON BLONDE / MARIANNE FAITHFULL” tribute tour to McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497.
+
Jill Sobule and Tammy Faye Starlite are two great friends, set to share what promises to be a mirthful evening of brilliant music and performance. Sobule, long a McCabe's favorite, has been touring the country regularly for the past 20 years following a debut album that included the breakthrough songs "I Kissed A Girl" (which shares only its title with Katy Perry's 2008 effort) and "Supermodel," as heard on the Clueless soundtrack. She's gone on to a career of musical innovation, including collaborations with Neil Young, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Morello, Julia Sweeney and Warren Zevon. Topicality has been a hallmark of Jill's performances, so it was natural that Huffington Post's video channel named her its musical correspondent. Despite the fact that she resides in Los Angeles, New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles wrote, "Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriters of the last decade. Topical, funny, and more than a little poignant... grown-up music for an adolescent age." Ms. Starlite, known to L.A. audiences for her sold out run of performances of Nico: Chelsea Madchen, has of late been exploring the life, times, and music of Marianne Faithfull, the '60s ingenue ("As Tears Go By") turned '70s addict and '80s doyenne of revenge (Broken English). While New York Times drama critic Charles Isherwood called her Nico piece "a remarkable - and howlingly funny -portrayal.. a funny, morbidly fascinating night of theater," Rolling Stone's David Fricke recently wrote, "Now, as Marianne Faithfull, British pop's queen of survival, Starlite resurrects 1979's Broken English as a thoroughly modern tale of adventure, abyss, and hard-won vengeance - one of the most brutally frank albums of its time, made flesh again." Tammy will be backed by Faithfull's original Broken English co-composer Barry Reynolds and musician/producer Kevin Salem (Soma City, Glimmer, Ecstatic). Tammy last graced the McCabe's stage as a special guest of Jackshit in December when she performed Loretta Lynn's kiss-off song, "Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, And Happy New Year," shocking both band and audience with her frank approach to intimacy.

Come early for the pre-performance discussion at 7:15 pm. Tonight offers a rare, theatrically-conceived performance of William Kraft’s “Settings from Pierrot Lunaire” and the world premiere of John Frantzen’s “Breathe” to anchor the program, which also features music by Christopher Cerrone, Jason Barabba, Vera Ivanova, and Helmut Lachenmann. Los Angeles-based Synchromy and Brightwork new music are teaming up to explore how some of our favorite composers have been inspired by the written word, bringing the worlds of music, literature, and theatre together in the way that only Synchromy can. “Music from Text” features collaboration with stage director Jessica Salans, soprano Justine Aronson, and actors Charlotte Gulezian and Justin Huen. Acclaimed soprano Justine Aronson returns after headlining Synchromy’s “The Other Side of Valentine’s Day” event in February of this year. She has been hailed as possessing "a deep reservoir of expressive devices" by The New York Times. Guest cellist Ashley Walters, violist Alma Luisa Fernandez, bassist Scott Worthington and conductor Andreas Levisianos will round-out Brightwork’s lineup for this one-time-only performance.

+
In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

Mon, Jul 27, in L.A.:
8pm “AN EVENING WITH MARK O'CONNOR” is a performance-interview in the Clive Davis Theatre at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (at Figueroa), Los Angeles 90015; grammymuseum.org. General tix go on sale Thursday, July 9, 2015, at noon.
+
For his first recording for Sony Classical, “Appalachia Waltz, ” GRAMMY-winning violinist MARK O'CONNOR collaborated with fellow GRAMMY winners YO-YO MA and EDGAR MEYER. The album gained O'Connor worldwide recognition as a leading proponent of a new American musical idiom.
+
His successful follow-up release, “Appalachian Journey, ” received a GRAMMY for “Best Classical Crossover Album.” After an award-winning recording career in Nashville appearing on more than 500 albums, several of which are GRAMMY winners, including his own “New Nashville Cats, ” O'Connor has immersed himself into perpetuating American classical music. His first full-length orchestral score, "Fiddle Concerto, " has become the most-performed modern violin concerto composed in the last 50 years.
+
In 2009, he developed the “O'Connor Method” for violin and strings, which takes an American classical approach to modern violin playing, offering a technical foundation using a diverse range of traditional American string repertoire. The “O'Connor Method Camp” will be held for the first time in New York this August. O'Connor's "Americana Symphony, " recorded by MARIN ALSOP AND THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY, had a successful multimedia performance earlier in June with the NATIONAL REPERTORY ORCHESTRA in Breckenridge, Colorado.
+
O'Connor's upcoming release, “Duo, ” a collaboration with his wife, fiddler/violinist MAGGIE O'CONNOR, features American classics arranged for two violins. In the museum’s Clive Davis Theater, Mark O'Connor will engage in an intimate discussion surrounding his music career, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation. And yes, the discussion will be followed by a special performance with O'Connor and his wife.
+
Doors open at 7:30 pm, though the line forms earlier for the best seats. Show is at 8. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in person at the Museum Box Office or online. General onsale begins Thursday, July 9, 2015 at noon.
