1) NEWS: New Video Instructional Courses for All String Players
÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷
From “Mandolin Fundamentals” to the “Secrets of Guitar Improv:” Video Instructional Courses for All Players, new from Hal Leonard
Hal Leonard, long one of the most trusted and reliable publishers of music instructiuon and technique books, is now publishing “Successful Homespun Music Courses” on Groove3.com
(Montclair, NJ – July 8,2015) Hal Leonard Books, the musician's best source of books on the music business, audio technology, instrument history, and more, announced today the availability of yet another welcome new series it has published. This time, it’s a series of high-quality music instruction courses on Groove3.com.The courses originated as the very popular and proven “Homespun Tapes” that have, for years, enabled beginners and advanced players to hone their musical skills.
Groove3 has established itself as a go-to platform for excellent tutorials and video training courses. As online learning has become popular, Groove3 does the tedious work of filtering-out noise to deliver professional, high-quality instructional content. Thanks to their partnership with Hal Leonard, they now offer music instrument instruction in addition to their technology tutorials.
The following FOUR new courses are available as of today, published at Groove3.com:
(a) “TAKE A SOLO! THE SECRETS TO BLUES AND COUNTRY GUITAR IMPROVISATION”
In this one, TOBY WALKER, a fingerstyle guitar virtuoso, shows how to come-up with powerful and compelling improvisations in any key and in any position on the fretboard, using a flat pick or fingers. Concentrating mainly on blues soloing, he eliminates robotic scales and patterns and shows you the "language" of a musical conversation. Toby has been eagerly received in concert halls, festivals and coffeehouses throughout the U.S., England and Europe. Toby has been featured in the NY Times, London Sunday Times, Elmore Magazine, Downbeat and Blues Revue, among many others. There’s more info and a sample video at “Take a Solo!” (see below for link).
(b) “BASIC LICKS AND SOLOS FOR ELECTRIC BLUES GUITAR”
This one, by JIM WEIDER, instructs electric guitar players how to play the blues. The tutorial demonstrates the easy way to get into playing authentic licks, riffs, rhythms and hot solos. Players will learn how to use slides, string bends, hammer-ons, and a variety of vibrato styles for an authentic blues feel, along with rhythm grooves, bass lines and other accompaniment techniques. Jim Weider is a master of classic telecaster and traditional blues slide guitar techniques; one of a select group of musicians to have an endorsement from Fender®. He has performed or recorded with such well-known artists as Bob Dylan, Graham Parker, Los Lobos, Robbie Dupree, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples, Paul Butterfield, Scotty Moore & Keith Richards, Hot Tuna, Bob Weir/Rat Dog, and Kim Wilson, among many others. More information and a sample video at “Basic Licks and Solos for Electric Blues Guitar” (see below for link).
(c) “MIKE MARSHALL'S MANDOLIN FUNDAMENTALS FOR ALL PLAYERS”
This will benefit every mandolin player, from beginners to experienced professionals. Mando master MIKE MARSHALL shows you how to become a better musician through proper technique, problem solving, and a systematic exercise regimen. Mike is one of the world's most accomplished acoustic musicians. A master of mandolin, guitar and violin, he puts his stamp on everything he plays, from jazz to classical to bluegrass to Latin styles. There’s info and a sample video at “Mandolin Fundamentals for All Players” at the link below.
(d) “THE SAM BUSH MANDOLIN METHOD”
Is designed to help aspiring mandolin players improve technical prowess, build repertoire and develop formidable musicianship. SAM BUSH teaches traditional fiddle tunes “Ragtime Annie,” “Bile them Cabbage Down,” “Blackberry Blossom,” and “Sally Goodin,” showing how to create variations on the melodies, use drone strings for fiddle-like effects, employ crosspicking techniques for a smoother sound, and move up the neck to play in higher positions. Sam Bush is one of the most versatile and powerful musicians playing today, a first-rate mandolinist, fiddler and guitarist. After 18 years (and 13 albums) with the ground-breaking New Grass Revival, Sam toured internationally as a leader of Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers and, more recently, with Lyle Lovett's band. Information and sample videos are at “The Sam Bush Mandolin Method” at the link below.
HOW TO GET ANY OR ALL OF THIS NEW SERIES
First, pricing & availability: The courses are available for download or streaming at Groove3.com as part of a either monthly subscription ($15 for 30 days) or the publisher’s 1-year pass for $150.00. For those with the time and dedication to take advantage of the pass, it can prove an excellent investment. This is an innovative way to make instruction available.

Wed, Jul 8, ON WEB RADIO:
6:30 pm (Pacific) RAINA ROSE plus her special guest play a live online show from her living room in Texas.
+
Raina, who was a favorite folksinger guest on the old “Tied to the Tracks” on L.A. radio, tells us, “...the internet is here to stay. Lightning fast connectivity is not going anywhere, in fact it will only get faster. It was brought to my attention that the internet may not actually have a smaller carbon footprint than a touring musician as it requires a lot of energy to cool all the servers. Mind blown. Nevertheless, I am playing a show in my living room on Wednesday night at 8:30 pm Texas time. It'll be just like the recent spate of Dead shows, except with worse lighting and sound. There will be a special mystery guest. Andrew Pressman may or may not play bass with me. Lots of surprises. Maybe we will invite a studio audience. Anyhow, we would love it if you would tune in and share with your friends. #deadhead #livestream #theinternet #flok –”

Wed, Jul 8, ON WEB RADIO:
7:30 pm (Pacific) JENNI ALPERT performs “an acoustic set of songs live” on “ENTER THE SHELL RADIO SHOW” from Noho2 Studio in Burbank.
+
Jenni just performed the special Fourth of July show with DUSTBOWL REVIVAL at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park in Pasadena, and she isn’t in town much these days. Having toured independently in over 14 countries, Alpert has shared stages with veteran artists including Luka Bloom and Loudon Wainwright III across the US and Europe.
+
The ever effervescent Jenni tells is, “... for the next two weeks, I will be mentoring a fantastic group of children at Hillsides Foster Home and Education Center on songwriting and producing a song with The Passion Purpose Project.”
+
No stranger to a busy schedule, Alpert has independently performed in over 14 countries and her music has been featured on major Network Television shows including Castle (ABC), CSI Miami (CBS) The Real World, Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant (MTV). As a UCLA Graduate, Alpert was one of the first vocalists to complete legendary Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell’s four year Ethnomusicology Jazz program. Live, Alpert has supported veteran touring artists such as Loudon Wainwright III, Luka Bloom, and Kaki King both in the US and in Europe. Upon releasing a few independent albums on itunes, Alpert was selected to record her song Untied by The Sun Studio Sessions for PBS at Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, recording home of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, and B. B. King. Shortly thereafter while touring internationally, an Italian vinyl label (Cappuccino Records), recorded and released a collection of acoustic performances live in Italy, which is now available worldwide on Amazon. SCurve Records will be releasing her upcoming album, a collection of fresh cuts, live in one take.
+
It is the deep connection to the roots of historical recordings of memorial artists and timeless songs in Soul, Country, Americana, Jazz and Blues genres made at Motown, Stax, Muscle Shoals, Sun Studios, and Capitol Records keeps Alpert writing, recording, and performing original music. She is rewarded by many manufacturer endorsements. Jenni Alpert plays Gibson guitars and uses D'addario, LR Baggs, Nord Keyboards, Luna and Bose products.

+
In this production of “As You Like It,” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

Based on the acclaimed memoir “One Train Later” by guitarist Andy Summers, “Can't Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police” follows Summers' journey from his early days in the psychedelic '60s music scene when he played with THE ANIMALS to chance encounters with drummer STEWART COPELAND and bassist STING, which led to the formation of the Grammy-winning trio THE POLICE.
+
During the band's rise and its dissolution at the height of their popularity in the mid-’80s, Summers captured history with his candid photographs. Using rare archival footage and insights from the guitarist's side of the stage, “Can't Stand Losing You” brings together past and almost-present as the band members reunite, two decades later, for a global reunion tour in 2007. Following the film screening, Summers will participate in a panel discussion, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation.
