Sunday's day-after-the-holiday Music: Mighty Fine, Mighty Fine...

.
.
Lots of live music today, reported in this edition. That includes two "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" picks, one at each extremity of the Guide's geographic reach of events coverage.

Before we get to them, and everything else happening today, we urge you to read THE NEWS in some recent editions:

√  The fine essay in yesterday's edition, celebrating Americana music for the Fourth of July.

√  Our July 1st special for Canada Day, saluting all the Canadian musicians who enrich our music scene.

√  The story on the preservation of McCabe's amazing recorded-live music archive that just went from Santa Monica to the University of North Carolina, reported in our big June 26-28 edition.

√ ALSO, the Guide's founding editor writes for other outlets. His piece on today's referendum in Greece explains what few Americans know: that the stakes are huge, and if the fat cats lose there, they'll make you pay, here. It's at:

Sun, Jul 5, in VC (Ojai):
6-9 pm  "A CELEBRATION OF JONI MITCHELL" with KIMBERLY FORD fronting a tribute band, at the Ojai Art Center,113 S Montgomery St,Ojai.
+
Kimberly Ford is a singer, vocal teacher and president of the Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation — and now, leader of a Joni Mitchell tribute band.
+
"Kimberly Ford says her singing career is bathed in 'Blue.' In the early 1970s, when she was learning to sing, Ford used that Joni Mitchell album as a primer. Mitchell’s words, music and soul-baring honesty 'articulated my experiences before I had language for them,'  says Ford... [who] is pouring her deep love and respect for Mitchell’s music into a new tribute band, A Celebration of Joni Mitchell.
+
"The group digs deep into the catalog of the legendary Mitchell, who is recovering from a brain aneurysm she suffered in March. They trace her evolution from progressive folkie to rock, jazz and world music master. Expect to hear songs from such classic Mitchell albums as 'Clouds,' 'Ladies of the Canyon,' 'Night Ride Home,' 'Both Sides Now' and, of course, 'Blue.'
+
“'It’s a great joy now with this new band to embrace and musically honor the extraordinary evolution Joni’s music made over these past five decades,' Ford says. 'Coming back to my roots and singing this music is like coming home and striking out for the unknown at the same time.'" — VC Star.
+
The group features Ford on vocals, George Friedenthal on keyboards, Lee Rollag on guitar and violin, Tom Buckner on saxophone, Tom Etchart on bass, and Charles Levin on drums.
+

+
