8 pm Scotland's fine singer-songwriter-guitarist JIM MALCOLM plays the "PASADENA FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY" concert series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (aka "Little Beckman") at Caltech in Pasadena. Parking is still free, but it has changed, so look at the venue's website:

* As we wrote this, Jim Malcolm, the "ultimate Scots troubadour" was still at home in Perthshire, starting to pack for his US West Coast tour, which will bring him to Caltech.
* Jim was lead vocalist for Old Blind Dogs (who are coming to Caltech on Feb 23) for about eight years, but he later went back to performing solo in favor of spending more time sharing his own compositions and traditional vocal interpretations.
* Jim writes original songs and covers lots of traditional songs, including compositions by some of Scotland's great writers, such as Robert Burns.
* He plays a bit of harmonica, too.
* Plus, Jim is a very funny guy and, between songs, we'll get exposed to stories about life in Scotland, the country's history, his travels, and more.

* Jim has a broad repertoire and a brand new recording out, "Spring Will Follow On," which will be available for purchase at the show.
* In a review of Jim's album, "Alive in Perth," Clive Pownceby wrote in "Living Tradition," "...here is a troubadour of substance playing guitar and harmonica with exemplary precision. Relaxed and amongst friends on his own patch at the Goodlyburn Theatre, he hit a peak that night last August, forging a very personal communion. His expressive voice, whether complementing a filigree picked guitar on the bittersweet 'The First Cold Day' or regaling us with tall tales, is warm and engaging." The reviewer concludes, "With a hushed reverence in the theatre at times, the whoops and yells at the end tell you that this gently-paced set has hit its collective spot."
