WHY WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, now requiring a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments. It’s far too time-consuming. So we began posting the calendar and news on Blogspot. We’ll see how this works, and we welcome your feedback, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com .

Since their arrival in 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO) has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer OSCAR HERNÁNDEZ, the thirteen-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide. “United We Swing,” SHO’s third album, is a stunning follow-up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album “Across 110th St.,” and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut, “Un Gran Día En El Barrio.” Free.

This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

THE MOONLIGHTERS have been a part of the New York City jazz and pop music scenes since they formed in 1998. They are based around a core of harmony vocal duets, backed by warm acoustic instruments, including Hawaiian lap steel guitar, ukulele, guitar and bass. They explore original, traditional and classic tunes with a unique, romantic approach. Their romantic songs and lyrical musicianship make them a favorite of lovers and jazz fans wherever they perform. Band members are BLISS BLOOD, vocalist and ukulele player; CINDY BALL, vocalist and guitarist; PETER MANESS on bass; and MARK DEFFENBAUGH on steel guitar. They have released four CDs on their Onliest Records label. These include "Dreamland" in 2000, "Hello Heartstring" in 2002, and "Live in Baden-Baden" in 2004, the latter featuring a performance recorded for German National Radio during their May 2002 tour of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. IAN WHITCOMB has a Grammy Award, he’s had two hit records, and he’s known as a gentlemen of great fun and world renown, amusing British singer, and extraordinary songwriter. He is the original eclectic entertainer of our time, and he’ll be musically reminiscing through his 36-year career about how, as a Trinity College Dublin student, he became a coffeehouse performer of British Music Hall songs and 50s rock & roll and then, swiftly, a British Invasion rock star in 1965. After that, he headed back into the past, researching and writing books and making records and documentaries about the glorious era of Tin Pan Alley and Vaudeville. Along the way, he produced Mae West albums, a film about how R&B started in Los Angeles, and one about singing cowboys in Lone Pine. He won a Grammy, and later, another nomination for his Rhino CD, "Titanic, Music As Played On The Fateful Voyage." He and his lovely wife and dog live just around the corner in Altadena, “The Greenwich Village of Los Angeles.”

FRED SOKOLOW is a renowned musician who specializes in guitar and banjo and spans every field including pop, folk and jazz. He does seminars in both banjo and guitar and has several CDs to his credit. His tours are diverse, and reach from Harrah's in Las Vegas, Tahoe and Reno, to Donte's Jazz Club, McCabe's, and plenty of places in Japan. He has toured with BOBBIE GENTRY, JIM STAFFORD, TOM PAXTON and THE LIMELITERS. Tonight, Fred will do several numbers with IAN WHITCOMB. $20.

BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the “Andy Williams Show” as the gravelly-voiced lead singer of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar." In 1965, in the vanguard of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit, "Eve of Destruction," which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times, despite being banned by the FCC from US airwaves for “sedition.” Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical, "Hair." Once again, his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire.”

JOHN YORK, best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned folk rock / country rock group, THE BYRDS, is currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties." John replaced Terry Talbot, who left for other endeavors. John’s vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as ROGER MCGUINN, GENE CLARK, CLARENCE WHITE, NICKY HOPKINS, MAC REBENACK (DR. JOHN,) DOUG SAHM (THE SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET,) THE MAMAS AND PAPAS, JOHNNY RIVERS, LIGHTNIN’ HOPKINS, RICK DANKO, RICHARD MANUEL (THE BAND), and many others. The TV show, “The Place Where I Am Dreaming,” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist SUMI FOLEY. This interactive program includes a brief history lesson of each musical style, a dynamic performance with selected children invited to the stage, and an opportunity for children to ask questions of the performers.
