This weekend: FESTIVALS are HUGE, including a big one that was unexpected! -- Aug 15, 2013 special edition
.
Two LATE ADDITIONS are included in the weekend festivals section, so have another look there.
.
One of the year's BEST festivals is a sleeper, in terms of publicity: it's "Echo Park Rising," it brings plenty of nu-folk / Americana, and all the details and the Guide's "who-to-catch-guide" are right here.

.
There's "SUMMERGRASS," San Diego's big bluegrass festival with big stars.

3) FESTIVALS this weekend:
.
.
Sat & Sun, Aug 17 & 18,
FREE FESTIVAL,
in Echo Park (L.A.):
11 am-late "ECHO PARK RISING," is a new synonym for musical abundance -- with 22 stages, over 140 bands, and a slogan of "Bands, Music, Art, Fun, Food" -- this is a big-deal, free, all-ages, indoor / outdoor fest on Sunset Blvd and surrounding streets and in all the local venues in Echo Park near where Glendale Blvd crosses-under.
+
The outdoor part runs 11 am-2 pm. The many indoor venues run late, some with festival-booked acts going until 2 am.
+
Okay, so how rootsy-folky-Americanaish is it? It's inclusive of all that, abd even moreso of nu-folk. Yes, it's inclusive of other things, too.
+
We were prepared to tell you that "ECHO PARK RISING," is pedominantly "alternative of all kinds" -- until we looked at the bands and solo & duo acts. Fact is, this is probably the best nu-folk festival of the year, with some roots-Americana, and it offers plenty of other music options, too.
+
It's so vast you can easily find plenty that you will like, and easily avoid whatever you don't.
+
It's "being built with love" by local music venues Taix, iam8bit, The Echo, Stories Books & Cafe, Origami Vinyl, & BedrockLA Rehearsal Studio. And another dozen-and-a-half venues are in on it, along with the stage in the adjacent park (which has a lake), and the other trappings of a major street fair.
+
There's food, shopping and music galore.
+
Sunday's ROOTS / AMERICANA Mecca:
That has to be the Echo, with its multiple stages, active both days. But specifically, on Sunday, "Grand Ole Echo" bookers Matt Farber and Ben Redell host the Outdoor Stage (aka the "Backporch Stage") at the Echo, from Noon-5 pm, to provide your Sunday roots music fix. Here's that schedule:
♪ RT N THE 44s at 12:30 pm.
♪ JACKSON TANNER at 1:30.
♪ ROD MELANCON at 2:30.
♪ ANDREW SHEPPARD & THE GALLIVANTS at 3:30.
♪ THE FAR WEST at 4:30 pm.
+
Elsewhere, on SATURDAY, if you roam the festival, there's plenty of Folk-Americana. Check-out:
Paul Bergmann & the Fair Moans (deep folk music)
♪ Son Ark (folk rock)
♪ King Kukulele Kid's Show
♪ The Graceland Exiles
♪ The Abigails
♪ Olin & the Moon
♪ Hi Ho Silver Oh
♪ My Hawaii
♪ The Melodic

♪ Asher Levy

♪ Tall Tales & The Silver Lining (folky rock)
♪ Nora Keyes
♪ Spencer Livingston
♪ The Dead Ships ("bluesy wrecking ball")

+
That's more than you'll find at any other nominally folkish festival, and the Guide's list does not include the other genres of music being performed simultaneously. Whether it's "whew" or "wow!" depends on how you approach it.
+
You can buy VIP Passes (good at all venues): $12 for one day (either day) or $20 for both days, and get access to VIP viewing areas, "skip the line" privileges, easy bar access, and a goodie grab bag (while supplies last); VIP areas are subject to capacity.

ReplyDeleteWatermelon and barbeque festivals? Am I back home in Tennessee? How come nobody knows about all these things? Every time I come to this site I find an entire "hidden LA" !
ReplyDeleteSchool has started and that's crazy and I should just decide that summer is over. But it's not and the kids are not ready for it to be either. So weekends will still be summer even if school nights can't be. And we will still look to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide for things to do. Thank you for all this! - Frazzled Mom
