One of the year's BEST festivals is a sleeper, in terms of publicity: it's "Echo Park Rising," it brings plenty of nu-folk / Americana, and all the details and the Guide's "who-to-catch-guide" are right here.

And there's the "CENTER OF THE WORLD FESTIVAL" that looks delightful, up in the woods in Fraser Park, where a songwriter, a filmmaker, and other artists will each take home a $500 prize!

FREE FESTIVAL,
in Echo Park (L.A.):
11 am-late  "ECHO PARK RISING," is a new synonym for musical abundance -- with 22 stages, over 140 bands, and a slogan of "Bands, Music, Art, Fun, Food" -- this is a big-deal, free, all-ages, indoor / outdoor fest on Sunset Blvd and surrounding streets and in all the local venues in Echo Park near where Glendale Blvd crosses-under.

The outdoor part runs 11 am-2 pm. The many indoor venues run late, some with festival-booked acts going until 2 am.
+
Okay, so how rootsy-folky-Americanaish is it? It's inclusive of all that, abd even moreso of nu-folk.  Yes, it's inclusive of other things, too.
+
We were prepared to tell you that "ECHO PARK RISING," is pedominantly "alternative of all kinds" -- until we looked at the bands and solo & duo acts. Fact is, this is probably the best nu-folk festival of the year, with some roots-Americana, and it offers plenty of other music options, too.
+
It's so vast you can easily find plenty that you will like, and easily avoid whatever you don't.
+
It's "being built with love" by local music venues Taix, iam8bit, The Echo, Stories Books & Cafe, Origami Vinyl, & BedrockLA Rehearsal Studio. And another dozen-and-a-half venues are in on it, along with the stage in the adjacent park (which has a lake), and the other trappings of a major street fair.

There's food, shopping and music galore.

Sunday's ROOTS / AMERICANA Mecca:
That has to be the Echo, with its multiple stages, active both days. But specifically, on Sunday, "Grand Ole Echo" bookers Matt Farber and Ben Redell host the Outdoor Stage (aka the "Backporch Stage") at the Echo, from Noon-5 pm, to provide your Sunday roots music fix. Here's that schedule:

52nd Annual "WATERMELON FESTIVAL" moves this year from its longtime home in Sunland to a larger site in the Rose Bowl parking lot in Pasadena.

The whole shebang is run by the Lions Club as a fund raiser for charitable projects. It includes watermelon eating, informally and in contests, live music, and all-ages fun.
+
One sad note: blues great ARTWORK JAMAL was booked to perform, but he died August 6. He had played this festival nine times. His ACID BLUES BAND will perform in his honor.

SUMMERGRASS offers a concurrent Bluegrass Kid's Camp. Children ages 6 to 16 who pre-register receive hands-on instruction, learning to play the traditional bluegrass instruments of fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass, plus stage performance classes.

Whether the young person is an advanced-level musician or a beginner, kids will be put in an instrument class appropriate to their level of experience. They'll learn something and have fun no matter what their level. The camp concludes Sunday with a finale, a 30-minute festival main stage performance, where the Kid's Camp kids are the stars, and festival organizers tell us, "the audience loves it!"

CHILDREN’S STAGE:
Operates Sat & Sun, noon-6 pm, with storytelling, magicians, inflatable impressions, bounces, and more, under the direction of Terrell & Takako, variety entertainers who specialize in juggling, magic, mime, origami, and unicycling. They have performed for thousands of audiences in Canada, Japan, and the United States. This couple has been featured on television in all three countries.

Terrell studied mime with Marcel Marceau, taught juggling at the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Clown College, performed as a clown at Disneyland, and in 1986 won an audition to become Tokyo Disneyland’s first variety entertainer.

• "Tales of Local Fauna & Flora" by Joel Robinson of nonprofit "Naturalist for You" 
• "Folk Stories" presented by Storytellers of the Ridge Route Community Museum

Sat, noon-7 pm in the Workshop Loft is "Video Viewing and Voting" where the public will view and vote on Youth and Adult video submissions for the Festival's "People's Choice Video Award." Tix, $10.

Sat, 1:30-3:30 pm is the "Amateur Playwright Competition – Round One," in which submissions from around the U.S. yielded twelve 10-minute plays, "chosen for social theater reflection about our social challenges." The first of those twelve plays are in Round One. Each play is followed by a moderated Audience Talkback, a discussion to further illuminate the topic of the play. Audience members cast votes to determine the winning play, with a $500 grant award to be presented on Sunday. Tix, $10.

Sat, 7:30-9:30 pm is the "Amateur Playwright Competition – Round Two," in which submissions from around the U.S. yielded twelve 10-minute plays; the second group of six are in Round Two. (More details in the Round One description.) Votes from Round One and Round Two are combined to determine the winning play. A $500 grant award to be presented on Sunday. Tix, $10.

Sunday's events focus on music and awards, and run 1-4 pm. Included are:

Sun, 1-4 pm is the "Songwriting Contest," a "People's Choice" award with a $500 prize. Festival producers say, "We feel it is our duty to give storytelling through music a venue for expression. Art is a means by which a community develops a medium for self-expression and interpretation. And 'interpretation' means to find out who we are at our core. It is important for a community to keep the arts alive, for, without it, there would be no culture, no society, and no civilization."  Tix, $10.

A list of participating finalists in the "Songwriting Contest," and the schedule of performances was not available at press time. We do know that WUMBLOOZO's Michael and Greg will perform Michael's song "Under the Bridge," described as "a hard look at what our Veterans can experience after serving." It was among the finalists selected to compete.

Frazier Park is off the I-5 "Grapevine" in the mountains between L.A. and Bakersfield. It's a bit far, but it's beautiful in that area and you can make a day or a weekend of it. There's a link for local lodgings on the event website (www.cowfest.org )

The Festival runs all day and evening Saturday, and resumes with "Focus Classes" on Sunday, taught by featured artists Sam Rizzetta (at the Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach) and Tull Glazener (at a private home in Downey). All events are included in the online registration form.
