FRETTED DULCIMER AS ART, at the ORANGE COUNTY FAIR

Paul Babcock, husband of Teresa Alvarado, Southern California Dulcimer Heritage (SCDH) sponsor and festival volunteer, is exhibiting his “Scrap Wood Dulcimer” in the Crafts & Woodworking Building at the Orange County Fair.

KULAK'S WOODSHED OPEN MIC / AFFORDABLE PRO RECORDING SESSION
.
The every-Monday Open Mic at Kulak's Woodshed has been happening for years, including the legendary decade it was hosted by Kiki Wow before she left to become the keeper of acoustic music on the Central Coast. .
It remains a popular event, and all ages are welcome.
.
But that's not the primary factor that attracts artists. Kulak's offers reasonably-priced pro audio / video recordings, smartly produced from multiple cameras.
.
There are a few recent changes. First is the new start time of 8 pm. You'll need to be there at 7 pm to sign-up for the one-song lottery. At 7:30, the host draws the names from a basket, one at a time. Paul Kulak says, "We usually have about 35-50 artists signing-up, so please perform a song that is 4 minutes or less, so that all the artists signing-up have a chance to play."

He continues, "For $20, you can request a DVD copy of your performance, captured by our 6 camera video studio with audio mixed in our 24 track Pro Tools studio. It's the Woodshed's only source of income to keep the doors open. We have nothing else to sell. A copy of the Pro Tools tracks are also available upon request. Please pick up your DVD on the following Monday night after 7 pm."

That's not all. Paul adds, "You are welcome to use our acoustic guitar, baby grand piano -- on loan by Bill Stettler, Thank you Bill -- and drum kit -- use our brushes please. You can also sing to a track if you bring it in on a CD. Original songs are 95% of what artists do here but covers are fine, as well. No amps please. We have all the audio gear, DI's, and hook ups you'll need. Thank you for helping to keep Kulak's Woodshed alive."

HOW MUCH FOOD IS IT? Crawfish Feast platter or Craw Bucket Feast, it's A LOT of food. And if you want to get serious, it takes a lot of delectably enjoyable time to eat it. What does that mean? A parent and a young kid can joyfully share a "Crawfish Feast" platter. Two adults can happily share a "Craw Bucket," and a couple with a young child can buy one admission-with-bucket and just two additional admissions. A dating couple could share a "feast" platter and hit the food court for more and different cuisine (see below), or a couple can fill-up sharing a bucket, spending at least an hour-and-a-half busily eating it. But if teenagers are involved and you expect to share a platter or even a bucket, they will develop a sudden love for crawfish and devour everything, leaving you an 18-inch high pile of shells and nothing else. Finally, if you have your own crab /lobster cracking tools, take them. Crawfish have thinner shells and are smaller, but tools can make it easier. So plan a bit, and this will be a highlight of your summer.

He started-out playing mandolin at age 4 and eventually added the guitar, banjo, harmonica and electric and acoustic bass. He was in the house band at the Whisky-A-Go Go and has worked with Little Anthony, Sonny and Cher, Sonny Knight, Suggie Ottis, The Lettermen, The Coasters, Etta James, and many others. Mike is an accomplished songwriter and teamed with poet Les Buffham to write "Nobody Kisses Their Horse Anymore," which was nominated for several WMA awards.

Mike brings a different approach to playing the bass. He thinks the main goal of a bass player is to join with the other rhythm instruments in laying down the "rug" that supports the lead instruments and vocalists. "Less is more" when it comes to playing the bass, says Mike. "One right note is so much more effective than two wrong ones."
+
Mike will explain the relationship between chords and where the bass fits in the picture. He will be explaining the use of the circle of 5ths and the Nashville system of playing songs in different keys. He will cover what patterns to play on different types of songs. Mike will use the bass guitar for demonstration but everything will be directly applicable to the upright bass. Mike encourages everyone to bring a bass guitar.

"Legacy," Bonfield's fifth solo CD and his 7th overall, is a blend of old and new songs performed entirely solo on a variety of instruments he brings on the road. They include his newly-acquired custom Carruth guitar (http://www.alcarruthluthier.com); a 2007 baritone guitar that Bonfield likens to a plucked cello; a 2010 11-string Harp Guitar that has a standard guitar's 6 strings plus an additional 5 'sub-bass' strings that allow Bonfield to play bass and guitar at the same time; and his 2012 Small Jumbo Carruth 'Green' guitar made entirely from sustainable North American hardwoods. He is an advocate of sustainable woods, like walnut, cherry, persimmon, and maple, as well as making use of salvaged wood, such as the Redwood top on his guitar acquired in the mid 1970s from a 12-foot-tall stump -- the tree itself was originally 'harvested' in the late 1800's.

Thus, the album name, "Legacy," has meaning. Produced by New England master engineer Tom Eaton, it was fully funded through a Kickstarter "crowd funding" campaign by Bonfield's fans.
+
In the spirit of the way it was funded, everyone who pays for a concert ticket gets a free CD. As venue impresario Bob Stane says, "That's a pretty good deal."

Danny Moynahan is a composer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He plays saw in a variety of contexts, including film, theater, live music venues, and playing "Happy Birthday" over the phone for his friends and family. You, too, can get those otherworldly sounds from this most unlikely instrument with Danny's expert instruction. Topics to be covered include:

To see their live show is to believe in magic and their genial blend of story-telling and side-show humor provides the backdrop to their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material.
