Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, indie-roots quartet, this is an acoustic blend of instruments and four-part vocal harmonies to challenge the conventions of popular music and create a musical balancing act of daring, engaging and innovative music.
+
Their songs are born through a collaborative process that aims for well-crafted and clever lyrics, acrobatic mandolin riffs, solid bass lines, and richly textured accordion tones. Their goal is to blend and contrast these elements as every member incorporates individual training in the songsmithing backdrop. They strive for detail, intricacy, and counterpoint balanced with moments of tasteful simplicity.
+
Bob Stane, impresario of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, where the group will play a full, two-set show on Friday, says of them: "A sonically adventurous approach to music identifies West My Friend as a key part of a growing musical revolution. A movement of the new generation of grass-roots folk music taking place in Victoria, Vancouver and across British Columbia, WEST MY FRIEND is a driving force pioneering 'A Musical Wildfire In The Snow.'"

Their performances of folk and bluegrass tear up the stage, rocking out on the fiddle and banjo. Expect a high energy and "hardcore" music experience.
+
Hatched in the twilight months of ought nine, these five young men came from all corners of the US looking to do one thing: knock the dust off roots music.
+
A freewheelin', trashgrassin', folk tornado, the Whiskey Shivers take traditional instrumentation, soak it in gasoline and send it into outer space. Breakneck speeds, killer grooves and impeccable musicianship: it's enough to make Bill Monroe himself do a double-take as he spins in his grave.
+
With upright bass, fiddle, washboard, banjo, guitar, and reasonably priced merchandise, Whiskey Shivers adds a fine layer of grit on top of the hard-driving rhythms of traditional bluegrass. They've been called everything from "trashgrass" to "hardcore roots" to "crazy-assed redneck music" — whatever the words, the meaning is the same: Whiskey Shivers brings the house down.
+
"As legend has it (depending on whom you ask, or whoever is telling the story), Austin quintet Whiskey Shivers formed around 2009. Some say they were hatched in a woodpile. Others say they tumbled out of one-a-them rancid whiskey bottles and frightened the locals. But mostly, it was a talented bunch of musicians who figured they’d make great music together." — Laurie Gallardo, KUT Austin.

* On this date in 1945, the crew of the B-29 bomber "Bock's Car" dropped a single bomb, code-named "Fat Man." It was the second atomic bomb used in warfare, and it instantly turned people on the ground and city of Nagasaki into a fireball hotter than the sun. Tragically, the first atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, had not been enough to finally compel the Japanese Empire to surrender and bring an end to World War II, the deadliest, most horrific six years in human history. Have we learned anything in the sixty-eight years since?

"NetteRadio," hosted by ANNETTE CONLON of THE CONLONS, (and formerly of the band Eden Automatic), is an internet radio show dedicated to promoting unsigned / indie women musicians from around the world.
+
Annette wants to bring the show back. It was webcast weekly from 2001 until August 2012, when Annette was struck with a retro-pharyngeal abscess that required emergency surgery, a trach, feeding tube, three additional surgeries, multiple hospitalizations, and a year-long recovery.
+
The timing means a lot to her. Annette explains, "My 'sickaversary' is August 17, 2013. One year from when I almost died. One year from when my world screeched to a halt. I'm so grateful for being given a second chance at life, and I want you to know I spend a large part of my time pursuing healthy objectives (eating well, swimming, yoga) and focusing on things that will help me heal. The doctors told me it would be a year (from the last surgery in December) before I was recovered, and it's been a roller-coaster of great and not so great days. I sometimes feel responsible for it taking so long, but then I look back at the notes or pictures and remember how awful it was, and realize it takes as long as it takes. One thing I've sorely missed? NetteRadio."
+
Now, Annette is ready to return to broadcasting. NetteRadio does not charge for basic services and relies primarily on donations and on The Conlons for out-of-pocket support. Help is needed to get NetteRadio back on the air.
+
The show is unique. As Annette says, "From piano to punk, from harp to hip-hop, we play it all." All of it from women artists.

Fri, Aug 9, in Tehachapi:
7 pm RANCHERS FOR PEACE, the father-daughter socially-conscious folk duo, plays Fiddler's Crossing, 206 East F St, Tehachapi 93561; 661-823-9994.
+
They'll tell you that throughout history, music has been an important form of communication. Early bards traveled from place to place, singing the news of the times, and keeping tales of heroism and adventure alive. In U.S. history, songs sung on the plantations would let African slaves know when and how to run for freedom. In more modern times, songs have been used to raise social consciousness to the issues of the day. "We Shall Overcome" became the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. Pete Seeger's "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" and Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" were sung by a generation in reaction to an unpopular war. Woody Guthrie's "This Land is your Land" was a response to the fencing-off of the West (and more).
+
The intent was not "political" in the sense of one party or the other, but a deeper yearning for justice and "right" in a world gone astray. This is the tradition followed by Ranchers For Peace, father-daughter duo Charles and Ray Duncan, from Cambria.
+
Everywhere they have played, including a recent concert in Bakersfield, they have garnered rave reviews for their songs and their entwined vocal and instrumental harmonies that use melodica, harmonica and guitar. Despite their name, they are not involved in the livestock business. In their words, their kind of ranching is done "where worldly concerns combine with empathy and, on a good day, become audible."
+
The "peace" they are "for" is not something that can be directly invoked, they say, but is a by-product that only arises in the presence of other favorable conditions and qualities, such as justice. "Our mission," say these Ranchers For Peace, "is to advocate for such conditions, and to join our noise with the long tradition of folksingers, bards, and troubadours who have done the same." They sing of the great issues facing us today, of immigration, racial tensions, pollution and the excesses of the corporate culture. But their overall message is simply that "it's cool to care."
+
Charles, a former TV writer, grew up in the 1960s when "music was part of the conversation" about civil rights, the Vietnam War and other social issues of the day.
+
Seventeen-year-old Ray doesn't think it's cool to be detached -- too "chill," in her words -- and she welcomes a chance to demonstrate that a little catharsis is good for the soul, and good for society. "We think and we feel, and often both at the same time. And plenty of people seem to be inclined to join us for the ride," she says.

“Pedal steel orchestra” isn't exactly a phrase you’ve hear very often. Yet, multi-Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer recognized the limitless potential of harnessing the evocative nature of multiple pedal steels to enhance the score of the recently released film, “Man of Steel.” For the project, Mr. Zimmer brought together some of the pedal-steel-world’s finest players at Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage for a series of recordings that make his latest film score absolutely unique.

+
The brilliant and ever-inventive singing political satirist Roy Zimmerman teturns to Southern California to deliver his new show, "FUNNY SONGS and BAD ADVICE." Take a look at Roy’s latest YouTube offering -- his song on fracking, "The Faucet's on Fire" -- at:
+
www.youtube.com/watch? v=VFD72ECm_CM. .
+
In thirteen albums over twenty years, Zimmerman has been bringing people together with what he calls “the healing power of ridicule.” His songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime. He has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records. He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post.
+
Zimmerman tours constantly, looking for the most progressive audiences in some of the least progressive places in America. “I get accused of preaching to the converted, but I don’t think of it that way. I think of it as entertaining the troops ” he says.
+
He's been at this awhile. Roy created the mid-'90s satirical quartet THE FOREMEN (recording artists on Warner/Reprise).
+
Jeannine Frank, producer of the "Parlor Performances" series, tells us, "I spent a few years as the band’s manager –- a wild ride and an experience I wouldn’t give up for anything. Foremen fans included Tom Lehrer, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Brian Wilson –even Oliver North, who invited them to perform the scathing counter-homage, Ollie, Ollie Off Scott Free, on North’s national radio show."
+
As for some examples of ROY ZIMMERMAN offering BAD ADVICE?
+
“Always put money in your mouth - that way, you know where it’s been,” sings Roy im one of his songs.
+
Or, how about, “Don’t let the bedbugs bite - but it’s okay if they nuzzle.”
+
“Give up,” he says. “That’s the worst advice I can offer. I meet a lot of people who are disillusioned and fed up with politics. I think I can actually provide hope and encouragement if I can say to these folks, in a satirical way, ‘when everything seems hopeless, Give Up.’”
+
Sing Out! Magazine writes,“Zimmerman is a guy on the left skewering folks on the right with rapier-sharp lyrics ... underneath the caustic satire is a man who is surprisingly optimistic.”
+
“He simultaneously inspires me and makes me laugh my ass off,” says comedian/author Paul Krassner.
+
Zimmerman’s funny songs are rhyme-intensive satirical originals recalling the sting of Tom Lehrer and the stridency of Phil Ochs. These are songs with a punch line and a purpose. Some sample titles: “The Faucet’s on Fire!,” “Abstain With Me,” “I Want a Marriage Like They Had in the Bible.“ His “Creation Science 101” is a YouTube video with over a million views.

8 pm I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. play their CD RELEASE show, plus the DAVE GLEASON TRIO is the co-bill, at McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica; www.mccabes.com
+
I SEE HAWKS IN L.A.'s 7th CD, "Mystery Drug," officially drops on August 20. So this CD release show gives those in attendance a two-day jump to buy it at the show.
+
The following is a compilation of comments on pre-release copies of the album, from lots of material released to the media. (We are not interested in plagiarizing from others' comments, and we do include our own here; but we freely use from all we agree with from what was given us by the Hawks. We choose this move for expediency, because it should give our readers an earlier opportunity to decide if they want to make reservations for the show. If you wait for our review of the new record, that would be awhile.)
+
The new album, on Western Seeds Records (in the US) comes on the heels of the Hawks' latest successful tour of continental Europe and the UK, and the album's overseas release on Blue Rose Records.
+
I See Hawks In L.A. can be, and had been, variously described as part acoustic nu-folk, part psychedelic country acoustic-and-electric rockers, and as all-Americana. This latest album represents a gathering of their longtime musical tribe with stellar guest contributions from some of California’s finest roots country musicians. The album has already been acclaimed by critics, one ststing it "breathes with a new life that will both refresh and challenge long time fans."
+
Hawks listeners will be struck by the chances taken in this latest phase of the band's journey — mixing the serious country cred of the band's members, who have played with Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Hazel and Alice, "and in every honky-tonk from Mississippi to Malibu" — with wild lyricism and surreal story telling.
+
Audra Schroeder of the Austin Chronicle calls the Hawks, "Americana, traversing the landscape of the Golden State like Didion on horseback. It's a divine fusion of humor and twang that's definitely high, but not that lonesome."
+
This album, "Mystery Drug," burrows deeper down the white rabbit hole. Layered with the electric swagger and sweetness of 1950's rock n roll, songs like "If You Remind Me," "Yesterday's Coffee," and even public service announcement "Stop Driving Like an A**hole," carry the innocent melodies of a different time. Indeed, the whole of "Mystery Drug" carries a lightness in sharp relief to the dark contemplations of last year's all-acoustic "New Kind of Lonely."
+
Are the Hawks more optimistic these days? Maybe, or maybe it's just the opposite and they have let go of all the false expectations of genre, or for that matter, career. There's a freedom here. A weightlessness. Floating on soft beds of reverb and pedal steel, a gentle and rowdy warmth surrounds the entire work, particularly on dreamlike "The River Knows," the final song of the record and perhaps its strongest and most hopeful statement.
+
"Mystery Drug" cuts a wide swath of post-Gram Parsons California country music: a sardonic / tragic cowpunk essay on commerce-as-love, titled "My Local Merchants"; a haunted accordion theme on a desert marriage ritual, in "One Drop Of Human Blood"; and folk rockers on the vanishing of spirits and aquifers of the American West, in "Sky Island," and "Oklahoma's Going Dry".
+
Musical guests include pedal steelers Rick Shea (Dave Alvin, Wanda Jackson) and Pete Grant (Grateful Dead, The Dillards, Rodney Crowell). There's honky-tonk and slide guitar, a Celtic 6/8 on "Death and Ancestry," three memorable love ballads, the signature Hawks' harmonies, and lots of cosmic acousticism. All that combines to make "Mystery Drug" a complex and varied voyage, full of wit and surprises.
+
I See Hawks In L.A. were founded in 1999 by Minnesotan turned Echo Park dweller Rob Waller and Cal natives Paul and Anthony Lacques. The band has been declared “the city’s premier roots band” by the Los Angeles Times andthe their music “trance-inducing, the stories transfixing, the vibe completely Californian,” by No Depression.
+
Hawks records have always mixed traditional bar room musings with tales rooted in geography, as in their treatments of the mating dances of whales, the life of Senator Byrd from West Virginia, a Humboldt pot grower’s flight to Tibet, boom-and-bust in guitarist Lacques’s Mojave desert homeland, wandering hippie caravans, and the imminent collapse of suburban Houston. In 2002, the Hawks were decidedly ahead of the curve in condemning the Bush administration’s drums of war.
+
Despite this out-on-a-limb perch, I See Hawks In L.A. have been embraced by legends of contemporary country, requested as an opener by Lucinda Williams and Chris Hillman (who plays on ‘06’s album, "California Country," hitting the Americana Charts, #2 on XM radio’s alt country, and with three #1’s on the "Freeform American Roots Chart." They’ve toured the U.S. many times, and just completed their fourth return to continental Europe and the UK, May 22-July 8.
+
You might catch the Hawks at outdoor "Hempfest" and "Belladrum Fest" in Scotland, at Joe’s Pub in NYC, Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago, House Of Blues and McCabes in L.A., or on the main stage at the Folk Alliance in Memphis. From acoustic folk to raging big stage country rock psychedelia, the Hawks choose it all.

Sat, Sep 7, in Arcadia:
7:30 pm PASADENA POPS presents a "MICHAEL FEINSTEIN: THE GERSHWINS AND ME," at their summer outdoor concert series at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, on Baldwin Av, just S of the 210 Fwy in Arcadia.
+
Principal Conductor MICHAEL FEINSTEIN says, "It will be my great joy to present a unique and singular program devoted to the works of George and Ira Gershwin."
+
He continues, "The selections will range from well-known standards to some delicious rarities that I hope will delight our listeners, for it is a rare experience to have the perfect combination of orchestra, guest soloists, audience and venue to present what I hope will be a fresh and memorable celebration of these treasured artists."
+
He offers some details: "The dazzling Overture" from the 1945 film, "Rhapsody," will lead-off the proceedings "in a lush and energetic medley arranged by Ray Heindorf -- a ten-minute opus that is a true orchestral showcase," asserts Feinstein.
+
He adds, "There will also be Nelson Riddle settings of Gershwin instrumentals, plus a selection of his peerless arrangements for Ella Fitzgerald, unheard publicly for decades; arrangements that typify the timeless quality that the Gershwin works themselves represent."
+
But that's not all. "An unknown miniature (that I discovered in the late '70s) called, 'Japanese,' will also be performed. Add to that some original charts by the equally legendary Conrad Salinger, written for the 1956 Paramount film, 'Funny Face,' a swing chart of 'That Certain Feeling,' penned for Bob Hope; along with fresh presentations of music from 'Porgy and Bess,' and other Gershwin shows including 'Of Thee I Sing' and 'Strike Up The Band.'
+
Plus, the evening will feature unexpected guests. Feinstein reveals, "The JPL Chorus will render a charming retro-sixties swing rendition of 'I Got Rhythm' (arranged by George Bassman), and the original ballet music form the Astaire/Rogers film, 'Shall We Dance,' will be played, too. Our guest vocalists are stage and television star TOM WOPAT, a particularly wonderful singer of American Popular music, and CATHERINE RUSSELL, who is highly acclaimed for her recent jazz recordings of standards, and for her way with a lyric. She is one of my favorite singers."
+
Feinstein entreats, "Please do join us for all of this and more, as it is a once in a lifetime chance to hear this music played by the great Pasadena Pops along with my personal commentary about the selections. I hope you'll want to be there, as it won't happen like this again!"

The press (including the Guide) likes Lauren and her music:
+
"LAUREN ADAMS BAND: This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS, to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion, and MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S 'Evangeline' with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song 'Thirsty,' title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly 'Americana Music Circle' showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." -- Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
+
"One listen and I was hooked. Superb, intelligent, thought-provoking songs. Real songs for real people wrapped in melodies that, promise to capture, inspire and pull the listener in again and again. Songwriters of Lauren Adams' level are few and far between." -- LAURIE JOULIE, Take Back Country Magazine.
