...  all in here, AFTER we tell you why January 29th is so special.
___

First: a moment of reassurance. If you're afraid you're going to find a bunch of stuff on why chickenhawk warmonger John Bolton should suddenly be viewed as a hero because maybe he might defy presidential edict and testify in the impeachment trial, and determine if it will be a real trial or a Republican exercise in "move along, nuthin' ta see h'yere!"-? Well, THAT is literally all you're gonna see in this edition on that subject. (In the words of Forrest Gump, "And that's all I have to say about that.")

So breathe that audible sigh of relief and enjoy the one place you'll find respite.

Settle in. You'll enjoy this.

Today is January 29th. It is "NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY," plus, it marks the birthdays of an especially fascinating assortment of notable luminaries. And more.
___

On this day in 2002, just 18 years ago: In his "State of the Union" address, President George W. Bush invoked "regimes that sponsor terror" as "an Axis of evil," in which he included Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Fear-based thinking was fed afresh, the warconomy's fuel was topped-off, and the ongoing era of America's ass-kicking purveyor of perpetual wars was poised to begin with the invasion of Iraq.

To which we pair two quotes by ones born on this date:

"War should never be entered upon until every agency of peace has failed."

   ~ William McKinley (b. 1843, assassinated as President, 1901)

...and...

"You don't send a man to his death because you want a hero."

  ~ Paddy Chayefsky (b. 1923, d. 1981), American author and screenwriter.

Someone you should know: a forgotten giant, born on this date

Allen B. DuMont (b. 1901, d. 1965), American engineer and broadcaster, founded the DuMont Television Network (back before hegemoistic monopolization would leave us with only six corporate controllers of media).

But hang on. We need to go back before that.
DuMont with first 21-inch
color TV picture tube (1954)

He was the American engineer who perfected the first commercially practical cathode-ray tube, enabling the economically marketable household TV set.

Keep hanging on.

Before THAT, he was stricken by, and overcame polio, and in 1915, DuMont became the youngest American to obtain a first class commercial radio operator's license -- at age 14.

In WW II, DuMont helped the U.S. Army Air Force develop a key countermeasure by reproducing a critical vacuum tube in a captured Nazi radar. That resulted in sparing the lives of thousands of U.S. and British aviators.

As a successful inventor, DuMont made money. And he used his money for good. He was the first to provide funding for educational television broadcasting. Along the way, he was the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards, among them the Cross of Knight awarded by the French Government, the Horatio Alger Award, the Westinghouse Award, and the DeForest Medal.

He wasn't a boring science/engineering nerd. DuMont enjoyed sailing. He participated in boat races, competing in navigation skills, and won three national championships.

Altogether, he earned more than 30 patents for cathode ray tubes and other television equipment. It revolutionized everything. "Screens" became the basis for every kind of information display, and his other devices became the way that tracking and data signals were displayed as meaningful information.

Yet in our time, he is so obscure that you can't even find a quote by him, searching online. It's an understatement that Allen B. DuMont deserves to be better remembered.

There is one modern reference to that television network he founded: "Your TV's so old, I bet you get the DuMont network on it!" ~ Family Guy, "Death is a Bitch" episode.

We're hoping that introducing you helps get him better than that.

THOUGHTS FOR TODAY by ones born on this date...

"Any idiot can face a crisis; it is this day-to-day living that wears you out."

~ Anton Chekhov (b. 1860, d. 1904), a key inventor of the modern short story that ended revealing something about the main characters' lives. His first play, "The Seagull," opened in 1885 to horrible reviews, but its phenomenal success two years later brought him back as a playwright, to writing, and to fame.
 _

"The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark."

...and...

"These are the times that try men's souls."

...and...

"To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture."

~ Thomas Paine (b. 1737, d. 1809), best known for writing “Common Sense” (1776), the pamphlet that convinced many Americans, including George Washington, to fight for independence from England. That authorship established Paine as a Founding Father.
_

"War should never be entered upon until every agency of peace has failed."

~ William McKinley (b. 1843, assassinated as President, 1901), American soldier, lawyer, and politician, 25th President of the United States.
_

"A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against its government."

   ~ Edward Abbey, naturalist, environmental advocate/activist, and author (b. 1927, d. 1989).
_

" Television is not the truth! Television is a g*ddamned amusement park. Television is a circus, a carnival, a travelling troupe of acrobats and story-tellers, singers and dancers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion-tamers and football players."

...and...

"I'm a man without a corporation."

...and...

"You don't send a man to his death because you want a hero."

   ~ Paddy Chayefsky (b. 1923, d. 1981), American author and screenwriter.
_

And for our present time, this very day...

"There comes a time in the affairs of man when he must take the bull by the tail and face the situation."

~ W.C. Fields, born William Dukenfield (b. 1880, d. Christmas Day 1946), comic actor, fabulously skilled juggler, author, screenplay writer of "The Bank Dick" (1940), "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" (1941), and "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man" (1939), his tragic alcoholism was played for laughs in an era when that was thought acceptable.

Share this with one who'll appreciate it.
*   HERE'S THE LINK. The whole series is here in individial episodes so you can pace yourself or binge it. You'll hear rare audiotaped interviews and fresh perspectives on what it meant — and still means — to be a woman making art:

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers -- and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
