Fifteen steam locomotives will gather for this one-of-a-kind four-day event, July 1 through 4, and nearly all will be running.
The best remnants of 19th century charm, with their art-embellished gleaming brass, are returning to life in a reunion from four points of the compass. They won't just sit for you to gawk at them like Rose Parade floats parked and silent. These move, clang and chuff, whistle and breathe fire, and they'll be pulling 19th century passenger cars for you to ride.
The "GREAT WESTERN STEAM-UP" at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will have music from lots of bands and individual artists, including 19th century-era music from an Irish band and more.
The event will reunite the most famous 19th century trains in the world, for the first time in well over EIGHTY years. That's because when the movies came calling, starting with silent films in the 1920s, only one railroad still had most of its already-ancient, stunningly beautiful, polished-brass-adorned, colorfully-painted, custom-decorated, 1870s-era steam locomotives. They will reunite ONLY for this event.

A strawberry supermoon will light up the skies Tuesday night. That's cool, but not exactly what you're thinking.
First, there's the "supermoon" part. That happens when a full moon is at its closest distance to Earth, making it appear brighter and larger.
Then there's the “strawberry” part. But that actually refers to Native American harvesting seasons, not an expectation of red or pink colors, like the "blood red Moon."
The forecast says cloud cover that had been over much of the US will thin out in many places in time for tonight. So -- before or after venturing into a venue or the studio -- go outside and gawk skyward for some mighty keen nighttime gazing.

"Best Americana Performance" and "Songwriter Of The Year" Categories among fresh additions to the GRAMMYs
The Recording Academy has added several new categories, including a needed new Americana category for the GRAMMY Awards starting in 2023. At last, there won't be a struggle to fit square pegs in round holes, trying to make Americana into "Regional Music" or "Country" ...at least when it comes to recorded performances.
Artists may now submit their Americana work for Best Americana Performance, a track and single Category that recognizes artistic excellence in an Americana performance by a solo artist, collaborating artists, established duo, or established group.
This new category complements the already established "Best Americana Album" and "Best American Roots Song."

Registered media companies will pay a fee of $65 (Early Bird Fee); $95 (Standard Fee); or $125 (Final Deadline Fee) per entry. Considerations will be made for artists/members experiencing financial hardships. The Category formerly known as "Best New Age Album" has been renamed "Best New Age, Ambient Or Chant Album" and the Field name has also been updated to reflect that change.
"Musical Theater Field: Recognition of Composers and Lyricists in Best Musical Theater Album Category
Category definition has been updated to award composers and lyricists of more than 50% of the score of a new recording.
"Music For Visual Media Field (Includes Film, TV, Video Games, And Other Visual Media): Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media
Some language in the criteria for this Category, which had been removed, has now been restored to recognize principal artists and in-studio producers.
"Production Field: Updated Definition of Best Remixed Recording Category
The newly amended definition of the Best Remixed Recording Category helps to reflect the remix craft as it currently stands in the industry: the creation of a new, full-track, unique performance created by a remixer from a previously released recording.

TICKETMASTER'S NEW PRICING IS SCANDALOUS
Change.org explains, "It’s summer concert season, but some fans won’t have a chance to see their favorite shows. That’s because TicketMaster launched a new 'dynamic pricing feature' called Platinum Pricing. With Platinum Pricing, tickets are priced by demand – sometimes up to $1,050 per ticket, a price that some people pay for rent."
That is a most appropriate analogy, and with concert goers paying over $5 a gallon for gas everywhere -- and nearly $7 in California -- just to get to a concert venue, this elitist profiteering scheme is scandalous. Our society, more and more, seems characterized by those who think they can get away with something and stick the rest of us with the bill. Here's your chance to tell them "no way!"
Change.org continues, "Sahmaya* says this pricing structure favors affluent fans over those with less disposable income. Add your name to tell TicketMaster to keep prices affordable for all fans, not just the wealthy few.
* - Sahmaya is Sahmaya Busby, who originated the petition to Ticketmaster on Change.org. 47,034 had signed the petition at press time.
It reads:
"End Ticketmaster’s Platinum Pricing Policy"
"Ticketmaster’s Platinum Pricing policy was allegedly implemented to "give fans fair and safe access to some of the best seats in the house." While this seems like a fair rule, it now operates to block lower-income fans from enjoying the artists they love. According to Ticketmaster, Platinum Pricing enables a market system where tickets are priced according to demand so that the "most passionate" fans have access to them.
"This sounds like a fair rule until you view the prices of the tickets. Unfortunately, this policy only means that the most wealthy fans have access to them. In Section 213 at Madison Square Garden, Harry Styles’ concert tickets were priced at face value at $83.50 in the presale. The next day, in general sale, they were priced upwards of $450--a 500% increase--not including later fees. Tickets in the upper house that are meant to be cheap now have unaffordable prices due to the Platinum Pricing policy. In an even more egregious example, pit tickets have increased to $1,050 per ticket, a price that some people pay for rent.
"There has been no evidence to suggest that this policy protects fans’ tickets from scalpers or bots; if anything, this encourages those entities. Scalpers can buy these tickets at expensive prices and resell them for even worse until the only tickets available are unaffordable in all places. The only fans who have access to these tickets are wealthy. Of course, this benefits Ticketmaster because it means they can profit off of fans using this system and gain the maximum amount of profit.
"Ending Platinum Pricing means that lower-income fans can enjoy viewing their favorite artists or sports teams at venues that use Ticketmaster, creating a more equitable system. If Ticketmaster wants to protect fans from scalpers and bots, they must strengthen their platform--not charge fans unaffordable amounts over 500% over face value. Sign this petition to demonstrate to Ticketmaster the wishes of their users."

Greatest Show from Earth
See it now. Next show in twenty years. Don't miss this one. All these points of light are bright enough that you can enjoy the show even in towns and cities with their notorious light pollution.
You can see a rare event in the night sky this month. For the first time in 18 years, five planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn — are lined up in their natural order from the sun and visible to the naked eye. It's better than that -- no one has seen things in such a nearly straight line since 1840!
Just step outside about 30 minutes before sunrise and look southeast. The planets shine brighter than the surrounding stars and should be easy to differentiate. As the month progresses, the Moon (with its presence in the show and its brightness interfering with seeing the planets) gets in and out of the act. So go out and gawk more than once, a few days apart each time.
As the month progresses, you'll be looking from north of east, near the horizon where the glow announces the sunrise, for Mercury, the only one challenging tough to find. Everything else lines up in the same angle across the sky, with each next planet higher and to the left. bright Venus is next, then Earth's companion, the Moon, functioning as our stand-up in the planetary sequence outward from the sun.
Until the Moon becomes a crescent late in June, its full brightness makes Mars, the next planet in the line, a little challenging to see. Just remember that Mars is the "Red Planet." Next is giant Jupiter, appearing this time to be much closer to Mars than it is. Across the longest gap in the line is Saturn.
This is a big deal because the planets do not go around like tracks on the same vinyl record. Physics dictates that the ones closer to the Sun go faster, and as you head away from the Sun, it takes longer to comp,lete an orbit. So Mercury makes a trip around our star in just 88 days, while Earth and the Moon need a year (365 1/4 days) and Saturn takes about 29.4 Earth years (10,756 Earth days).
We could get into why that is -- and how an early proof that mathematics is naturally derived was provided by the planets. Suffice it to say that each one sweeps-out an equal-area arc in the same amount of time. So Venus' slice of pie is short and wide, and Jupiter's is very long and very skinny.
It all adds-up to why this particular perspective from our Earthbound viewpoint is so remarkably rare. Don't miss it!

Summer Solstice, Sunday, June 19th
There are, or at least were in ancient times, several solar and cross-quarter Celtic festivals around the time of the Summer Solstice. It's a great time to pause and focus -- as did our Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestors -- on falling in love with the Earth. And remembering that you never allow anyone to abuse one that you love.
The theme echoes when we consider words in the Declaration of Independence that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
June 19th is also Juneteenth, the day that marks the liberation of the final group of people held as slaves in America. It took from the end of the Civil War in April, 1865, to June 19th, 1865, for word to reach the far expanses of Texas. Of course Texas was a slave state, a former independent republic (that allowed slavery), a US state (that allowed slavery), a seceded state in the Confederacy (that allowed slavery), and on the losing side of the Civil War (that finally ended slavery in "the land of the free, home of the brave.")
History tells us that certain interests in Texas conspired to keep "their" slaves in bondage and servitude. Seems the world views of some in authority in Texas have not really changed much, about a lot of things.

Jack Hummel, longtime concert photographer whose generosity to artists was legendary, has left us. The California Chapter of the International Western Music Association will host a Celebration of Life for Jack, one of the organization's most devoted and valuable members.
The event is Sunday, July 10, from 4 to 7 pm. The venue has changed, and is now El Tracadero Steak House, 24274 Main St, Newhall, CA 91321. Raul, the proprietor, will have extra people on staff to accommodate the gathering.

"Jamie Galen’s uncanny incarnation of Truman Capote in the first act of playwright Jay Presson Allen’s Broadway adaptation (from 1989) of Capote’s writings and ruminations, 'Tru,' is a must-see tour de force. The one-man show is set in the glitterati’s penthouse overlooking the glittering lights of Manhattan and the UN Building wherein the 'In Cold Blood' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s' author muses out loud and answers phone calls on Christmas Eve, 1975. At this moment critics and beau monde 'pals' feel aggrieved that 'Tru,' as he’s nicknamed, has betrayed their trust by publishing a chapter of his unfinished tell-all tale 'Unanswered Prayers' in 'Esquire' Magazine that dares tell the 'Tru-th' about the lifestyles of these rich and famous 'friends.'
"Capote apparently agrees with his literary forebear F. Scott Fitzgerald’s observation: 'Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. Capote’s psychological critique of the not-so-beautiful-people is devastating, and when Tru skewers the squires in Esquire he’s taken aback when they squeal about his revelations. Truman argues that the ladies and lads doth protest too much; he’s a writer, after all, what exactly did the Paleys, Vanderbilts, et al, expect him to do with is peeks into their personal lives? He was a literary Wile E. Capote, so to say."
"More than almost any other writer, Capote carefully cultivated his public image with relentless appearances on TV talk shows hosted by Dick Cavett, Johnny Carson, David Frost, etc., and craved fame as well as fortune. When it came to the gentry, the gossipy Capote did not go gently. However, I suspect that although he lived on high in his posh penthouse perch after achieving bestseller status, he was not to the manor born, but I suspect his class consciousness was tinged with envy. (Capote’s contemporary, that classy class traitor Gore Vidal, was a far superior and consistent critic of the ruling class.)"

A 50th anniversary perspective
As the 50th anniversary of Watergate approaches -- the break-in by Nixon White House-funded burglars was June 17th -- Margaret Sullivan writes that "the press will never have another Watergate moment" again. She says this is because "our media environment is far more fractured, and news organizations are far less trusted..." (WaPo)
To wit: a Trumpy Republican told me she thinks "all this sudden Watergate stuff" is "only being done to make Republicans look bad in an election year."
I'd call that proof Big Media is failing to convey verifiably factual information in a credible manner. As to how much is the fault of journalism in the face of crazy crap on social media, in the end that doesn't matter. Either they find a way to regain trustworthy prestige, or they're just noise.

Gas & diesel prices
Putin caused it, and Big Oil's war-profiteering is like nothing ever seen
It often surprises Americans that the USA, and not some Middle Eastern fiefdom, is the largest oil producer on the planet. A second shock is that the US produces a surplus of oil, and until recent years, it was illegal to export it.
Indeed, the smug spokespeople for Big Oil, telling cable news hosts about Oil being a global commodity with one international base price? That would not be so if we simply resumed the laws of not-so-long-ago, and kept "our" US oil here. Much of it is literally "our" oil, since it was pumped from beneath public lands.
With pump prices nearing $7 a gallon, each and every disclosure of quarterly profits shows a new record for Big Oil. It is simply war profiteering.
Because of this exercise of greed, delivery costs for everything are soaring. Transportation in a continent-spanning nation drives the prices of every kind of commodity, from food to lumber to shoes.
Artists were preparing to do concert tours, post-pandemic. Many wonder if they can afford to do it and if they will lose money by taking to the road. Suddenly they have a window into the cost structure of the delivery business, and a sense how all of us are hostage to price manipulation for enrichment of the morbidly wealthy. You can't fix it in the mix, and many do not know where to turn.
We need immediate legislation to ban export of oil produced in the US. With that, Big Oil should be allowed a 20% profit margin, based on their historic costs measured over time. Any profits over that should be subject to a 100% windfall profits tax, with revenues used for (a) temporary direct relief to American consumers, and (b) permanent direct subsidy to homeowners for free installation of rooftop solar, owned and controlled by the homeowner (not a predatory "middleman" who captures most of the money as we now have).
Along with that, all taxpayer subsidies of the petroleum industry must end immediately. The entire concept of an "oil depletion allowance" -- paying Big Oil with taxpayer dollars because the oil they take is no longer there to be taken -- is utter lunacy.
And a new paradigm is needed beyond the current runaway greed. The fossil fuel industry must be forced to pay substantial taxes -- with no escape -- on all their profits, as well as on the bloated compensation packages the industry provides its executives. The only path to tax relief open to them must be through them changing to invest profits in green energy, together with their corresponding irrevocable surrender of unused oil leases and no campaigning for more.
Politicians who run cover for Big Oil must be retired from public office. They need to be outed for their climate change denial and acceptance of fossil fuel campaign cash that amounts to nothing more than taking bribes.
Thing of it is, a majority in the House of Representatives would pass bills tomorrow to achieve that. But every Republican in the US Senate always schemes to block everything, in hopes of turning public disgust to their advantage in November.
Corporate mainstream media must stop running cover for greedy oligarchs and the politicians they own, and "out" the lot of them -- all who are accessories to profiteering.
It's time for structural change to bring us a paradigm shift: the need to use oil must not bankrupt the average person so they cannot afford to transition away from it. Renewable energy is now the cheapest to generate, but no one can afford an electric car if all their discretionary income goes into the tank of their gasoline powered car.
Look closely at the voting records of sitting politicians before November arrives. Do not waste time with any big media that fails to help you do that. You can simply default to partisanship, or you can bring the change we all need.

"What we present on stage is a show in which our boys tell their stories of coming to America in the early and mid-1950’s, their time spent in the pubs, coffee houses and theaters around Greenwich Village in NY, their rise from part and full time acting jobs, which was their original ambition and goal, to becoming the four “best known Irishmen in the world” as described by Ireland’s celebrated radio and TV personality Gay Byrne at the time.
"A couple of spots on the Ed Sullivan Show launched their career into a stratosphere they never expected, and our lads present the story through narrative and twenty one songs that will bring the audience back to a time and place; their world comes alive with the rollicking, devil may care approach they took to their performances, but as actors, every note and mannerism was very finely rehearsed. Henry Harris (aka SOUTH SIDE SLIM) grew up in Oakland in the '70s and early '80s listening to a wide range of innumerable musicians, including Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Van Halen, and the Isley Brothers. He spent his mid-20’s hanging out in Hollywood. During his Hollywood years he fortuitously met up with the great LA blues guitarist Ray Bailey. Bailey turned him on to blues played with a rock-infused feel. Henry got serious about his guitar in 1992 when he fell upon some hard luck. He turned to his dad for help and asked if he could live in his trucking yard at 61st and Avalon in Los Angeles. Hank, as he was known then, wanted to use the opportunity of being homeless to focus on really learning to play the guitar, an instrument he had fooled around with since high school.
He practiced a minimum of 6 hours a day. Evenings found him walking to jam sessions at local blues spots, including, Babe and Ricky’s (at its original spot at 53rd and Central), the Safari Club, and competitive private juke joints. After returning each night to the yard, he slept in an old van, showering in the morning with a hose behind some wood slats. He treasures those years and recognizes how valuable the time was in developing him into a bona fide blues musician. “Those years were like my FAME. I was going to school. I submitted myself to learn as much about the blues, performing, and the guitar as I could. I soaked up everything about the old guys, those bluesmen who really lived and looked the part.”
By 1998 Little Hank had transformed himself into South Side Slim, guitarist and singer/song writer. He wrote, arranged and recorded his first CD, 5 Steps, with Southside Records, a company he and blues guitarist-math professor, Jerry Rosen, had formed. Within the next three years Slim cut two more original CD’s. More Blues from the South Side (2000) included cuts from South Los Angeles bluesmen, Smokey Wilson and Curtis Tillman. Raising Hell (2001) continues to receive critical accolades. In 2004, South Side Slim released, Trouble on the South Side, garnering international praise.
He won many fans when he brought the crowds to their feet at both the Pocono and North Atlantic Blues Festivals during a recent national tour. Slim is a recent recipient of Los Angeles Weekly’s Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues/R&B Artist.

This is fine and fun Irish Fiddle. Kira Ott and Jimmy Murphy have been playing Irish music together in numerous bands over the years. Now their musical connection includes multi-instrumentalist Marla Fibish.
From unnamed pickup gigs and Ciúnas through The Sweet Set, Jibberish, Rattle the Knee, and their current projects, they've always played off each other and brought out the joy in the music. Marla has long been a great friend and inspiration for many tunes and songs. It's a rare treat when all three join forces.
Jimmy Murphy, guitarist and mandolinist, has been a cornerstone of the traditional Irish music scene in southern California for over a decade. He has appeared in performance venues from the Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles to temples in Japan. He has performed on KPFK's "Global Village" with Eric Rigler, on KPFK's "Folkscene" with Mick Moloney, and live on KCSN's "Tied to the Tracks". Jimmy spent two years as a contracted musician in Japan; first as a soloist for Tokyo Disney Sea, then as a member of a band for Universal Studios, Japan, and finally as a key member for a four piece band again at Tokyo Disney Sea. He is a favorite guitarist for many Irish musicians in LA.
One of the prominent voices of the mandolin in Irish music, Marla Fibish brings a deep and distinctive sensibility to the music on one of its lesser-heard instruments. Her playing is featured on numerous recordings, most recently her 2020 solo release, "The Bright Hollow Fog."
Marla also plays mandola, tenor guitar, button accordion, and is a singer and composer. She's known for musical settings of works from a variety of poets, as well as original tunes written in traditional forms. This work is featured in the duo Noctambule, her longtime collaboration with guitarist and husband Bruce Victor. They've recorded four albums together, most recently "Every Migrant is My Fellow," released in Sept 2021.
An experienced and sought-after teacher, Marla offers private students & classes online at Peghead Nation, and has been on the faculty of many music camps including The Swannanoa Gathering, The Mandolin Symposium, O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat, Portal Irish Music Week, Lark Camp and more. Her instructional DVD is a popular self-learning tool, focused on acquiring the foundational technique for playing Irish music on mandolin.

Pasadena Folk Music Society presents Scottish folk band Old Blind Dogs, for the series first in-person concert since 2020; at Caltech's big Beckman Auditorium, the "wedding cake" building, at the southern end of Michigan Avenue (332 S. Michigan Av), Pasadena CA
This is "Traditional Celtic music with added pizazz," from one of the best folk bands ever to come from Scotland.
The talented quartet plays traditional Celtic music with modern flair from influences of jazz, blues and other genres. They have delighted foot-tapping audiences in six prior concerts put on by this local folk music society since 2002.
Producers tell us, "We're eager to open with a 'Welcome back!' announcement, since this will be our first live show since the pandemic shutdown began. Caltech's strong public-health precautions will be in effect."
They continue, "It may be a few months before another concert from Pasadena Folk Music Society after this one, as we work on some issues that have developed in scheduling in-person shows. A good turnout for Old Blind Dogs next week could help, so please spread the word about this event."
In Old Blind Dogs' 30 years of performing, they twice have been named "Folk Band of the Year" in the Scots Trad Music Awards, a ceremony begun in 2003 to celebrate Scotland's traditional music in all its forms. They were inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2020.
The band is touring in support of its fourteenth studio album, "Knucklehead Circus," hence the carnival getup in the photo above.
A "Bright Young Folk" review of "Knucklehead Circus" says, "With Hardie’s versatile singing, Hutton’s virtuoso piping and whistle playing, Jones’ recognisable cittern and guitar substrate and Hay’s avant-garde percussion, this album is exactly what the quartet wanted it to be: an upbeat and uplifting musical experience conveying the emotions and the vivacity of their live gigs." The reviewer neglected to mention Hardie's fiddle mastery.
Songs on the new album include the more traditional "John Barleycorn" and instrumental "Thin Man."
You can purchase tickets for the June 18 show online, by phone or at the door. They're priced at $25 for adults and $10 for children and Caltech students. Ticket office personnel can answer questions about public-health precautions in place.
Enjoying a concert in the auditorium comes easier when you feel safe. To keep public events safer, Caltech now requires that all guests wear a high-quality mask (surgical, N95, KN95, KF94) indoors at all times. In addition, proof of full vaccination and booster, along with a government-issued ID, is required to enter Beckman Auditorium. Children under five -- who are not yet eligible for vaccination -- are not permitted at public events in the auditorium at this time. These health and safety measures are subject to change at Caltech’s discretion based on evolving health and safety guidance and conditions. Due to health precautions, no refreshments will be available during the intermission.
Free parking is available in the lot next to the building. (Spaces labeled with Caltech faculty names are open to visitor use in the evening.) There are handicapped parking spaces. If you have specific handicapped needs, you can call 626-616-4559. Also, two parking structures one block west on Wilson Avenue are open during evening hours.

He is also the current owner of the oldest Irish import shop in the US, MacNamara’s Irish Import Shop in Hollywood, also home of the Wren Theater.
"What we present on stage is a show in which our boys tell their stories of coming to America in the early and mid-1950’s, their time spent in the pubs, coffee houses and theaters around Greenwich Village in NY, their rise from part and full time acting jobs, which was their original ambition and goal, to becoming the four “best known Irishmen in the world” as described by Ireland’s celebrated radio and TV personality Gay Byrne at the time.
"A couple of spots on the Ed Sullivan Show launched their career into a stratosphere they never expected, and our lads present the story through narrative and twenty one songs that will bring the audience back to a time and place; their world comes alive with the rollicking, devil may care approach they took to their performances, but as actors, every note and mannerism was very finely rehearsed. They were heavily influenced by the intense high energy of the American folk and union songs, took the Irish parlor songs and songs of rebellion and emigration and added the drive that delighted audiences worldwide.
"They hung out with the Beat crowd, Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, Odetta, Josh White, to name a few: they were trailed everywhere at the time by a young kid named Bob Dylan, with whom Liam Clancy remained a lifelong friend. Bob Dylan once said he 'hoped to be as famous as the Clancys some day.'
