MARDI GRAS, plus all of Monday’s Music & Art Scene ~ Mar 3 & 4, 2014

.
MARDI GRAS ~ that’s “Fat Tuesday” to all you English-only types ~ is Tuesday, March 4. Here in Southern California – quite uniquely – we don’t limit ourselves to a build-up to one day and a complete cessation of happiness when that day ends. No matter what tradition demands anyplace else. (How typically Southern Californian.)

Of course MARDI GRAS is always on an unpredictable date. Everywhere else, it’s the LAST DAY you can get “fat” before the self-imposed deprivations of the Catholic calendar, commencing with Ash Wednesday, through the somber season of Lent. Which means it’s tied to Easter. Which means it’s tied to Passover. So there. You owe your Mardi Gras revelry to the Jews. L’chaim as you rouler les bonne temps!

* * * * * *

March 3rd & 4th in History…

√  March 3 is “WORLD WILDLIFE DAY.” It’s organizers say, "Let us recognize and embrace the beauty of our natural world & motivate others to care, and act, to secure a future for wildlife." Our thanks to L.A.-based singer-songwriter MICHAEL ANN for reminding us.

√  It’s a STAR SPANGLED BANNER day on March 3: On this day in 1931, Francis Scott Key’s poem "The Star Spangled Banner," as set to music long before, was made our National Anthem. Thus, the United States of America became the world's only nation to have the melody of awkwardly-written beer-drinking pub song as the music for a poem, about an obscure incident in an otherwise forgotten war, as its national anthem.

This photo on the Guide’s home page is the 42' x 30’ flag that inspired Key to pen the poem from the deck if a British warship where he was being held captive in Baltimore harbor, off Fort McHenry while it was bombarded by the British fleet. Today, the flag is displayed in protective low-light at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. (Photo from the Defense Commissary Agency.)

Mar 4, in Hollywood:
4 pm  ORGONE plays live for "FAT TUESDAY" (Mardi Gras) at Amoeba Hollywood, 6400 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-245-6400;  HYPERLINK "http://www.amoeba.com" www.amoeba.com.
+
If you were there for Mardi Gras -- Fat Tuesday -- 2013 with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, this year's music is a bit different.
+
Orgone celebrates their latest album with a live set at Amoeba Music, Hollywood - and kicks off their Annual Fat Tuesday festivities -- and that format is a tradition there.
+
Mardi Gras DJ's kick-off at 3 pm and Orgone plays live at 4 pm. Followed by the Fat Tuesday parade / procession celebrating the musical culture and heritage of New Orleans - complete with floats, beads, masks and fun for all. You'll be able to buy the new Orgone CDs, "New You" (Part 1 & 2), and the band will sign copies after their performance and the parade.
+
A portion of the day's proceeds will be donated to "Tipitina's Foundation" and the "New Orleans Musicians' Clinic" to support the great works they do with artists in and around New Orleans.
+
Now, about Orgone:
Pronounced with a long second “O,” the Los Angeles band Orgone is dedicated to heavy, raw, adrenaline-fueled funk and sweat-dripping soul. With a core rhythm section of close friends and self-taught musicians steeped in local DJ culture, Orgone has spent the last decade "expanding their roster and evolving a sound rooted in old school respect but pulsing with the force of the new millennium." Orgone has become a staple on the festival circuit, "while gaining a reputation among fellow artists as one of the baddest go-to backing bands on the planet. Always evolving musically and cosmically, Orgone continues to connect with kindred musical spirits throughout the universe with relentless touring and the upcoming release of their fifth full-length album."
+
Starting-out as an instrumental five piece by friends with a love of funk records, Orgone cut their teeth putting their own gritty takes on cuts by the Meters, Booker T. & the MGs, Grant Green and Funkadelic among others. In 2002, the band independently released "Orgone," a collection of tough, stripped-down, funk instrumentals that Relix Magazine called “intoxicating” and that quickly became a favorite of die-hard, funk fans. Orgone solidified that underground respect in 2006, adding a powerful horn section and releasing their second album, "Bacano," a set of all-original, cold-blooded funk gems in the classic vein of War and Mandrill with improved, warm, organic production that matched the evolution of the band’s sound. The release of their cover of “Funky Nassau” on both 7” and 12” became a ubiquitous spin on the dance floor, inspiring a club-edit by DJ Danny Krivit and paving the way for "The Killion Floor" in 2007, Orgone’s first full-length album for Ubiquity Records.
+
Orgone continued their evolution when the critically-acclaimed "Cali Fever" was released in 2010. "The album was musical chameleon, shifting between West Coast cool, New Orleans grit, Lagos afrobeat, and heavy Mothership funk, taking, in the words of Dusty Groove America, 'a rough, rugged, and uber soulful live funk vibe into a deeper and even livelier realm!'," says Amoeba.
+
Released later the same year, an all-instrumental album, "The Killion Vaults," showcased Orgone’s growing skill behind the soundboard and why their home studio, Killion, is becoming a favorite recording site for many acts. Orgone’s roster and sound continue to grow . And there are ample opportunities to catch Orgone on stage. Touring almost non-stop since the release of "Cali Fever," including 288 shows in 2011 alone, Orgone has evolved into an incendiary live act, both as a headliner and opener for acts that include the Roots, Al Green, Gil Scott-Heron, Rebelution, Galactic, Ozomatli, Snoop Dogg, Thievery Corporation, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Groundation, and Aaron Neville.
+
Amoeba adds, "Whether playing a club show or slots at national festivals like Bonnaroo, All Good, New Orleans JazzFest, High Sierra, Bear Creek, SXSW, moe.down, Mountain Jam, Waterfront Blues Festival, Jam Cruise 10 and many others, Orgone is a live funk juggernaut that can do it all, weaving seamlessly between gut-bucket nastiness, afrobeat, disco/house, and classic covers, creating a sweaty, dynamic dance experience."
+
With their critical success and tight, touring chops, Orgone is a sought-after backing band for studio sessions. The band has flourished in the studio, appearing on the 2011 multiple Grammy-winning Cee Lo Green track, “Fool For Love” and major recordings by Alicia Keys (“Teenage Love Affair, “Wreckless Love”), Estelle (“Pretty Please”), Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and Anthony Hamilton. Orgone’s musicians have also collectively and individually toured and played with Booker T Jones, The Pharcyde, Breakestra, Keb Mo, Plantlife, Macy Grey, Pharoahe Monch, Too Short, Brett Dennan, Slick Rick, and Bun B.
+
So, you can see why we said this is musically quite different from what you experienced here last year. It's free, so if you go, go early.

These two singer-songwriters are surely familiar to you: ERIC BRACE is the leader of LAST TRAIN HOME, a celebrated roots-rock-alt-everything band. PETER COOPER is a sweet-singing songwriter with three solo records to his name, who is also the chief music writer for Nashville's daily newspaper, “The Tennessean.” His newest solo release, “Opening Day,” is a work of a man at the peak of his substantial talents. The boys will be singing a bunch of songs from it, and a bunch of songs from their latest duo record, “The Comeback Album,” a fine collection of thoughtful, whimsical, exquisitely-wrought, and downright excellent tunes.

Together, Eric and Peter harmonize, tell stories, pick their guitars, and force you to ponder life's bigger mysteries, like: * Why was Phil Rizzuto crying in the broadcast booth? * How many bones are there in the human body? * Why won't Peter take his boy to the circus? * What's so dismal about Dismal Hollow? * Who is Warren Mihachik?

Events for a Sparkling Post-Rain Sunday: Mar 2, 2014

.
It's post-rain some places, still raining in others. But glorious. Glorious.

The Guide has two separate editions today, this one, with all the events, and a separate special edition titled “CELEBRATE THE RAIN PLAYLIST,” available at a separate click.

March 2nd in History…

THEODORE “DR. SEUSS” GEISEL was born this day in 1904. He was the renowned author of over 46 children's books filled with whimsical rhymes and endearing characters that stay with you for a life time.

SAM HOUSTON was born this day in 1793. Governor of Tennessee and a US Congressman, he gained fame as the General of the Army of the Republic of Texas who defeated Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, one of history’s most lopsided decisive armed engagements. That victory avenged the massacre of the Alamo and won independence for the Republic of Texas, which was an independent nation for years. San Houston served as its first President, and helped guide Texas into US statehood. And he fell from favor when he opposed secession and Texas’ joining the Confederacy.

Along with thousands of events, we’ve listed over SEVENTY Ticket Alerts in the last two weeks – some as recent as Friday – for which tickets were about to become available, or with passwords to get tix early, or where tickets were about to be gone.  If you haven’t been keeping up with each edition and you’ve missed any of those, all the info is still available. But don’t dawdle. They’re ticket ALERTS because these things sell-out.

Now that March is here, you’ll need to click “February” in the sidebar at left. Things automatically archive each month. And if you’re reading this on a mobile device, back-up one screen, and scroll a short way down below the current listings to find and click “View Web Edition,” and then you’ll see the sidebar at left.

♪  “OSCARS SEND-UPS” are today’s not-so-serious NEWS FEATURE

Film culture topics are sort-of explored (with attitude) all over the media. Some do it better than others, and some get tons of “web viral” attention, while others remain obscure. Here’s our effort to do something about the latter.

= + = + = + = + = + =

Our talented friends at JOY CAMP specialize in satirical treatments of just about everything. They won a top prize at the 2013 “No Budget Film Festival.” They are reprising their 2013 Oscar send-up. We think they cross the line with their opening, but we enjoy their innovative concept and the rest of it, after the opening.

JOYCAMP's "OSCAR PROPAGANDA FILM" from 2013 can be viewed at:

= + = + = + = + = + =

Next, there’s a piece titled "Best Picture Pictures -- Because a picture is worth a thousand thumbs-up." It appeared in Monday's "Inside Hook LA." Which is actually published in New York City (get a rope).

Seriously, it's a semi-serious look at several underreported Oscars' topics, in slide shows. Our recording artist / sound mixing / record producing readers might enjoy whatever they have promised to have up there now.

The "Inside Hook" piece begins:

"Because we all have a lot of opinions about the Oscars, and none of them include anything about 'sound mixing,' we present the second annual 'Best Picture Pictures:' a series of infographics that put the evening's heavy hitters in respectful context. Down in front, please.

"We've been thinking a lot about the Oscars. Mostly so we can win our Oscar pool, which we never win, because who the hell knows the difference between sound editing and sound mixing? Besides Danny Elfman?

"And also because the Oscars, like the Super Bowl, are one of those pan-society occasions that reveal the giddy id of the American ego. Or at least reveal Jennifer Lawrence in Dior. How cute is she, amiright?

"So we're proud to present the second annual 'Best Picture Pictures,' made using hard data, statistical analysis and at least one borrowed copy of Photoshop.

"Here's a small taste...; the rest of the infographics are right this way. Enjoy."

Here's the url:

www.insidehook.com/2014-best-picture-pictures

= + = + = + = + = + =

It’s a bit shocking, but the Oscars are actually broadcast LIVE at 5:30 pm on KABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles. Or you could camp-out with Turner Classic Movies all day and evening and enjoy some of the greatest films ever made.

+
Together, Eric and Peter harmonize, tell stories, pick their guitars, and force you to ponder life's bigger mysteries, like: * Why was Phil Rizzuto crying in the broadcast booth? * How many bones are there in the human body? * Why won't Peter take his boy to the circus? * What's so dismal about Dismal Hollow? * Who is Warren Mihachik?
+
For the answers to these and other pressing questions, head on out to see them. And if you ask real nice, the boys will play some songs from Eric's latest creation, “Hangtown Dancehall,” a folk-opera about the California Gold Rush.

4-7 pm  JOSH NELSON DUO and vocalist SARA GAZAREK at Alva's Showroom, 1417 W 8th St, San Pedro 90732; 800-403-3447 for reservations.
+
The piano is, of course, the most versatile of all instruments. It can become a suit of armor or a bouquet of flowers. It can keep time and it can stop time. When paired with the human voice, the possibilities are limitless but the outcome is unpredictable. Vocalist Sara Gazarek and pianist Josh Nelson have aligned their musical spirits in a way that would make any artistic duo envious. Gazarek’s top flight interpretations of the vast and varied American songbook are buoyed by the sensitivity of Nelson’s supple command and they have transfixed audiences from New York to Tokyo. They have a telepathic understanding that has come about through more than a decade of friendship, not just hundreds of hours on the bandstand and it blankets any audience lucky enough to hear their swinging high-wire act of trust and commitment.
+
Championed by some of music's most celebrated figures, Sara Gazarek has emerged as a strikingly original artist with limitless potential. With three highly acclaimed CD's under her belt at 31, Sara has been hailed by the LA Times as "the next important jazz singer," and "impeccable," by the Winnipeg Free Press. Blessed with a gorgeous, translucent voice, excellent pitch, and supple sense of time, Gazarek is steeped in the jazz tradition, but is not afraid to embrace the music that moves her generation. Her newest CD, Blossom & Bee (2012, Palmetto) was released to rave reviews, as Nick Mondello of Jazz Times has noted "Blossom & Bee' has all the beauty, bite and superb workings of a winner. It’s as good –or better – than some recent Grammy®-nominated or winning female vocalist efforts." When not criss-crossing the globe with her band, Sara is embracing the future of jazz vocals as a faculty member at the University of Southern California, leading the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble there and teaching privately.
+
Josh has produced music for countless albums, films, and television, but also makes time for his own projects including Anticipation (2004), Let it Go (2007), and I Hear a Rhapsody (2009), all of which featured Josh’s explorations of new original music, standard interpretations, and reinventions of pop tunes. His recent record Discoveries (2011) pairs classic sci-fi film footage with new compositions for a brass and wind ensemble. He currently teaches at Cal State Northridge as part of the music faculty.

Tom Fair says, “Behind the scenes, we call it ‘MM3’ - the 3rd in a series of ‘Mountain Music’ concerts based on the musical traditions of the eastern mountains of Appalachia. This one is extra-special to all of us because it deals with musical moments that defined an era -the first sound recordings of the songs that became the foundation for modern Folk and Country Music. The Carter Family (photo at bottom below),from the hill country at the border of Virginia and Tennessee recorded over two hundred songs between 1927 and 1942 - and on March 1st, 2014 the Urban Homestead in Pasadena will ring and rock to a selection of the best of the Carter catalog. Not to be missed!”

TOM FAIR - vocalist, guitarist, event producer, music historian and music teacher in the Los Angeles area for 22 years. Tom is the leader of the pack who gets the musical ball rolling.

THE WIMBERLEY BLUEGRASS BAND - a young family bluegrass group on the rise - four siblings from Orange County who are already veterans of the bluegrass circuit - with precision instrumentals and four-part family harmony that will knock your socks off.
+
JUNE KATO - solid, dependable upright bass player who “keeps us in the traffic lane.”
+
ROB SANDIFORD - a versatile multi-instrumentalist (banjo, mandolin, Dobro, etc.) and vocalist. Tom says, “Rob is the icing on our musical cake, he rounds out our profound sound.”
+
If you are not familiar with the Carter Family, you needn't feel alone - I have to admit that even though I've spent my entire life from age 3 immersed in music of all kinds, it wasn't until 2013 that I became fully aware of the Carter Legacy. The Carters can be considered the link between the Mountain Music of frontier days in the Appalachians and modern sounds in folk, bluegrass and country music. Beginning in 1927, they recorded over 200 songs that became a source of material and inspiration for hundreds of recording acts that followed. They were prominent on the record charts of their day, their "hits" being "Wildwood Flower" (1928), "Keep On the Sunny Side" (1928), "Tonight I'm Thinking of My Blue Eyes" (1929), "Worried Man Blues" (1930), "Lonesome Valley" (1931), and their most popular "Can the Circle Be Unbroken," (1935) since recorded in numerous versions by countless musical artists of all varieties. Alvin Pleasant (‘A.P.’) Carter was the driving force behind their success; Sara provided the lead vocals on most of their recordings; and Maybelle, an accomplished guitarist with a distinctive and imitated style, provided the ‘licks’ and harmony. Audiences not previously familiar with the original Carter family may have come to know Maybelle as the mother of June Carter and mother-in-law of Johnny Cash. Carlene Carter and Rosanne Cash represent a third generation of this inspiring musical family.”

“CELEBRATE THE RAIN PLAYLIST” ~ March 2 2014

.
The Guide brings you this short special edition, in advance of today's full edition, due shortly.

What better than appropriate music to celebrate the welcoming return of rain to Southern California amidst a record drought?

RUSSELL PARIS, co-founder and co-host with wife Julie of the renowned “RUSS & JULIES’ HOUSE CONCERTS” series in Agoura Hills (west of Thousand Oaks, California) spent part of his day Saturday compiling a hefty playlist. Much of it is Folk-Americana, and plenty of that is acoustic tracks.

Russ’ list received additions from numerous others, including the Guide’s editor. Here’s the list, as Russ created it, followed by the compiled additions. It’s a great mix of music that’s iconic, and music you should explore.

With sporadic showers predicted through Sunday, and reports of downpours in some places, even as we publish this, you might yet be able to give yourself a soundtrack to accompany the pitter-patter (or thunderous roar) of raindrops on your roof.

+
Lineup includes:
+
TOM FAIR - vocalist, guitarist, event producer, music historian and music teacher in the Los Angeles area for 22 years. Tom is the leader of the pack who gets the musical ball rolling.
+
REBECCA STOUT - vocalist, Appalachian flatfoot dancer and instructor. Tom says, “Rebecca, with her sparkling personality is a Ray of Sunshine in a dreary world. Rebecca Stout focuses on dance as a percussive instrument, encouraging students to develop their own unique style. Since meeting and performing with Rebecca, I’ve checked out a number of other flatfoot dancers, and there’s simply no comparison; her energy and bubbly enthusiasm are unmatched.”

+

+
What if Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had hailed from California instead of Britain? Would the Rolling Stones’ songs have sounded more like The Beach Boys’, sung in tight harmony and played on acoustic guitars? James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf present their answer to that question when they perform their “All Wood and Stones” concert. With songs that, in the hands of these two virtuoso singers and acoustic guitarists, seem both familiar and brand new, plus dashes of the duo’s comedic repartee, this is an evening not easily forgotten. James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf are no strangers to Tehachapi. Both have played at lost and lamented venue Mama Hillybeans in the past. Stanley has performed twice for Fiddlers Crossing, and last fall in the BeeKay Theatre, in a concert sponsored by the Bear Valley Cultural Arts Association.

As with last year’s sold-out Wild Honey Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper show at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, this event will benefit the Autism Think Tank The non-profit organization brings together a team of top autism specialists, via an Internet medical conference, to tackle the seemingly intractable and painful medical/psychological issues faced by kids like Wild Honey co-organizer Paul Rock’s nine-year-old son Jake, a non-verbal autistic boy with extreme digestive distress and self-injury issues. Thanks to Jake’s recent involvement with the Think Tank (made possible by one of the three sponsorships raised by the previous show), there has been a huge reduction in his digestive-distress-induced self-injury. Building on this success, the proceeds from this show will help the Think Tank relieve the suffering of even more kids like Jake. The show will also support the Children’s Music Fund, a Southern California non-profit, in their effort to provide music therapy and musical instruments for children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic or life-altering illness. Founded by Autism Think Tank member Dr. Raffi Tachdjiian, an UCLA allergist and pediatric pain specialist, the Children’s Music Fund works to harness the amazing healing power of playing and listening to music to reduce the pain and suffering of kids with autism, cancer, and many other debilitating conditions.
+
Dating back to 1994, Wild Honey’s grassroots benefit/tribute shows have featured appearances by Brian Wilson, Dave Davies from the Kinks, the late Alex Chilton, Danny Hutton from Three Dog Night, Chuck Negron, Dan Wilson, P.F. Sloan, John Brion, Peter Case, The Plimsouls, Victoria Williams, The Williams Brothers, Dave Alvin, The Blue Shadows, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Scott Miller from the Loud Family, Ann Magnuson, and so many more. The shows have been produced at various Los Angeles-area locations including the Morgan-Wixson Theater in Santa Monica, the Roxy, the Knitting Factory (Hollywood) and the El Rey Theatre.
+
Over the years, Wild Honey shows have raised funds and awareness for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, Habitat for Humanity, the Liberty Hill Foundation, USC Norris Cancer Center, and the Coalition to End Gun Violence while paying tribute to musical idols: Brian Wilson, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Everly Brothers, The Hollies, Harry Nilsson, Pete Townshend, solo Paul McCartney, and Elvis Costello.

John Zipperer's first CD, “FULL CIRCLE,” on his Ziptunes label, arrives today in “a musical celebration,” with John joined on stage by his John Zipperer & Friends band mates, Barrett Tagliarino, Tara Sitser, Jime Van Booven, and Jaynee Thorne, “as well as the magnificent musicians” featured on "Full Circle," including the CD’s producer Nick Kirgo (Les McCann, Nelson Riddle, Vonda Shepard, Dianne Reeves), the ubiquitous Dave Beyer on drums (Christopher Cross, Melissa Etheridge, Gregg Allman, Jackson Browne), and more to be announced.
+
Distribution is through CD Baby and the album will be available at Amazon, iTunes and other quality outlets. To which John adds, “if you can't come, please buy the CD at CD Baby, iTunes, etc. available on Feb 25th.”
+
A revealing review reads: “A former TV actor and stuntman, John Zipperer’s second chance came rolling down the highway of life, not on a carefully controlled movie or commercial set, but while changing a tire for a friend along the 285 freeway in Atlanta, GA. John was hit by a ten-wheel oil truck. After flying forty feet and landing in the hospital, John was told by the critical care doc, ‘You should be dead!’ To John this seemed like a clear sign that life is, or could be, too short. He packed everything he owned into his 1976 Camaro and headed out to Los Angeles to pursue a life in music. It was ZipTime! John’s clear voice, infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics reach fans in places that they didn’t know existed. Soon everyone is singing along, swaying, chair dancing, head bobbing, and clapping. Fans remark over and over about the joy that is evident when the band is on stage: joy in their playing, joy for their audience, joy from their audience. John Zipperer & Friends deliver a unique and refreshing blend of rock, folk, country and blues. With a stellar lineup of band members drawing upon the wealth of experience, credits range from Jethro Tull and Vanilla Fudge to Frank Zappa and The Wallflowers.”
+
John Zipperer is the front man with lead vocals, rhythm and/or lead guitar and increasing turns on the mandolin and banjo; Barrett Tagliarino adds flashy guitar, vocals and mandolin; Tara Sitser contributes vocals, keyboard, and ukulele; Jime Van Booven rounds-out the mix with solid bass lines and vocals.
