BIG WEEKEND EVENTS – LOOKING AHEAD

.
Weekend heads-up… with details in a separate (nearly simultaneous) edition…
+
LIVE OAK and HUCK FINN -- BIG and beloved festivals are this weekend, and they begin Friday (lineups and web links near the end of this edition, in the “Look Ahead” section). Plus, “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA” returns Sunday, on numerous stages, all FREE, as part of the global “FETE DE LA MUSIQUE” that originated in France. Sorta like a stay-close-to-home one-day festival for the budget-conscious and irreconcilably broke. Of course, some folks are crazy enough to catch a day or two at one big festival, then a day or two at another. If you don’t feel like that well-worth-it road trip to the hills north of Santa Barbara or the Mojave River near Victorville, there are daytime and evening shows all around the L.A. area, including the all-day Pasadena event.
+
And remember what ELSE is coming: there’s the wonderful “THREE GIRLS AND THEIR BUDDY” concert with EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN, SHAWN COLVIN, & BUDDY MILLER at the Greek Theatre, Wed, Jun 24 (and you can still WIN FREE TICKETS from the Acoustic Americana Music Guide, through this Friday, Jun 1;; details at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2009/06/win-free-tix-to-see-emmylou-harris.html or at http://community.nodepression.com/profiles/blogs/win-free-tix-to-see-emmylou

And, the annual “Long Beach Bayou Festival” is the following weekend!

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.

Sun, Jun 21”
All-day “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA” returns for a second year, after being one of the US centers of last year’s import from France of their annual “FETE DE LA MUSIQUE.” Multiple stages throughout downtown Pasadena are being planned, some indoors, some outdoors. One established early is the beautiful theater-like auditorium stage in the Pasadena Central Library, 285 E Walnut St, Pasadena 91101; 626-744-4066; www.cityofpasadena.net/library/events. In addition to all the other stages around town, The library has a fine lineup, through the afternoon (and it’s air-conditioned). JAMES HURLEY and MARINA V, two of the artists named in FolkWorks among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten,” are performing there:
WILLOW BEND BAND, including their dulcimers, at 1:30 pm
DEBBIE BERRY at 2 pm
DALE LaDUKE at 2:30 pm
JAMES HURLEY, multiple award-winning singer-songwriter at 3 pm
LISA TURNER at 3:30 pm
MARINA V at 4 pm
+
Nick Smith, one of the well-known bookers of the Caltech Folk Music Series, tells us about his role in this event: “On absurdly short notice, some of us are putting on a show -- technically, a bunch of shows, all at the same time. Last year, with more planning time, we managed to create 80 music stages. This year, since we didn't get the go-ahead until 3 weeks ago, it's smaller, but still really great. The event includes all kinds of music, but there will be a strong presence of folk and acoustic music.”
+
There’s a show including folk and world music at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park, where RED MOLLY looks like a fine bet, and QUETZAL and TETE are both scheduled there, as well.
+
Armory Center for the Arts (across the street from Memorial Park) returns with an Americana stage (indoors), like they had last year. Their lineup includes MARY COPPIN, DAVID VIDAL, and JOHN STOWERS.
+
The One Colorado stage is very eclectic, but includes at least one artist who is heading up to the “Winnepeg Folk Festival” in a couple of weeks, an indy artist from the Northwest named MIRAH.
+
The central website is www.makemusicpasadena.org. Things are being posted daily, as acts and venues confirm. All events are free.

Wed, Jun 24; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:

+
The performance of “Three Girls and Their Buddy” is a powerful evening of melodies and harmonies by megastars of roots-Americana, all four of them multiple-award-winning and accomplished singer-songwriters. The group is certain to present originals from their latest albums: Emmylou Harris’ “All I Intended to Be,” Patty Griffin’s “Children Running Through,” Shawn Colvin’s “These Four Walls,” and Buddy Miller’s recent offering, with his wife Judy, “Written in Chalk.” The set list will be a delightful mix of their originals and their favorite folk, country, and rock covers. All will share the stage, taking turns singing lead while the others do back up on vocals, guitar and hand percussion.
+
EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN, SHAWN COLVIN, & BUDDY MILLER have variously played in each other's bands, sang each other's songs, done guest appearances or produced each other's albums, or done all of the above. The scope and artistry of such broad collaborative interaction is evident in their undeniable chemistry on stage. This is one of our favorite “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks of the summer, and an exciting ensemble performance by four beloved, venerable and esteemed all-stars of Americana, as “Three Girls and Their Buddy” perform at the Greek Theatre on June 24.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS / RULES for the ticket giveaway:
+
1) “Tied to the Tracks” and the “Acoustic Americana Music Guide,” in association with Nederlander Concerts, is offering a FREE PAIR OF TICKETS each day for a week, Sat, June 13 through Friday, June 19, to see “Three Girls and Their Buddy” at the Greek Theatre on June 24.
+
2) On each of those seven days, just after 12 Noon, a daily question will be posted at both http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com and http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks
(The same question will be posted, as close as possible to the same time each day, on both websites.)
+
3) Each day, a different question will ask something about the music careers of one of the four artists performing in “Three Girls and Their Buddy” at the Greek Theatre on June 24.
+
4) The questions may be easy or difficult. Some may require digging, but the answer to each can be found by doing research on the web. Of course, big fans of the artist whose career is the subject of any given day’s question may already know the answer, and have a key advantage based on knowledge they already possess. Each question will be written by Larry Wines, and he shall be the sole judge of each question’s correct answer and of the winner of each of the seven pairs of tickets. NO ONE will be given hints, clues, answers or other information prior to the public release of each day’s question.
+
5) The winner of the pair of tickets each day will be determined by the first correct answer to the day’s question, as received at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com
(Exception: after winning a pair of tickets in this giveaway, a winner is ineligible to win a second pair in this giveaway.)
+
6) Each winner, upon notification he or she has won, must provide their first and last name and complete address as it appears on the government-issued photo i.d. that they will use to claim their tickets.
+
7) Winners agree to allow their name and the name of the town where they live (not their complete address) to be used publicly in connection with any and all publicity and promotion deriving from the ticket giveaway, and each winner agrees to send a post-performance comment about the show, by email, for use by “Tied to the Tracks,” the “Acoustic Americana Music Guide,” Nederlander Concerts, and/or the Greek Theatre.
+
8) Upon receiving confirmation of the required i.d. information and the winner’s statement of acceptance of each of these terms, and intention to attend the concert, that pair of tickets (of the seven pairs) will be placed for pickup at Will-Call at the Greek Theatre, for pick-up on the evening of the performance, June 24, 2009; receiving the pair of tickets requires showing a government-issued photo i.d. with information matching that sent by the winner (see Rule #6).
+
9) Should a winner be unable or be deemed unable, for any reason, to accept the pair of tickets, the first correct answer received at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com after their correct answer was received will win that pair of tickets.

If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
