WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Tue, Jul 28, last Tue, every month; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
6-8:15 pm STAN WEST at Frisella's Roastery, 179 N Glendora Av, Glendora; 626-852-1810. A bluesman from hat to boots, Stan West is, according to blues expert Bernie Pearl, one of this country's premiere slide guitarists. Vintage Guitar Magazine wrote, "Stan West knows the Blues," and Seven Days adds, "If there is any justice, Stan West would be a legend." He’s still working on that, with his new CD, “Live at Mr. Mike’s.”
+
When he played the Fret House, they noted, “Stan West is something of an institution on the Southern Californian blues scene, delighting the patrons of the area's blues clubs with his potent slide guitar riffs for around thirty years, as well as opening for artists like Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter and Robben Ford. A rather astute observer of that four-letter word called ‘life,’ Stan West knows the blues.”
+
Stan has quite a history, indeed, including performing on stage with all those luminaries, and even with Janis Joplin. In 1977, a stroke paralyzed one side of his body and robbed him of the ability to play. Overcoming that with a new and unique slide guitar style, he launched the Stan West Band in ’79. Beginning in ’83, he became proprietor of Stan’s Guitar Shop in Glendora. His previous CDs were released in ’94 and ’97. More recently, Stan was diagnosed with coronary artery disease, and has been forced to declare “no more smoke-filled clubs!” Catching Stan perform these days is a rare treat. More at www.stanwest.com. Venue offers great food, beer and wine. Stan says, “Try their tri-tip for a real sandwich treat!”

Tue, Jul 28; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm MICHAEL UBALDINI plus THE MIGHTY ORANGE TRIO at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Rock n roll poet, philosopher, hopeless romantic, storyteller, guitar slingin' outlaw, these are only a few of the diverse descriptions of Michael Ubaldini. With six CDs, including his latest "Street Singin' Troubadour" (2008) which has been winning favorable reviews in The USA and UK. The L.A. Times’ Mike Boehm calls him "Better than Bruce Springsteen at probing the national soul," in what Michael calls an “infamous review,” an ironic bit of faux humility, since Boehm is a top respected music critic, who cites the latest CD as “Record of the Year" and lists it as his “# 10 'Best of The Decade,” where it is the only indie CD alongside major label artists on Boehm’s list. Michael has won numerous awards, including the 2005 & 2006 "Best Roots" and “Best Live Male Performer” in the Orange County Music Awards, and “Best Live Performer / Songwriter” in the Southern Cal Music Awards in 2007. He has been nominated for “Best Country / Americana CD” in the OCMA's for the newest album.

In March 2009, Michael Ubaldini was featured on CNN Headline News as his Nashville tour concluded with a featured performance for the fifth time in six years at the famous Bluebird Cafe.
+
Plus, THE ORANGE MIGHTY TRIO, a Chicago / Minneapolis based band that calls their instrumental music "bluegrassical" since it contains technical and compositional classical elements and adds “the accessibility of” fiddle. They are said to interact like improvising chamber musicians. Take one part bluegrass fiddling and combine with classical technique and compositional chops, add a range of improvisation, especially jazz flavor, and you might get a recipe for The Orange Mighty Trio’s music. These instrumentalists use humor, spontaneity and onstage interaction to capture a growing audience for their adventurous violin, piano and bass. The Trio received acclaim for their self-titled EP and has followed up with a June 2009 CD, “Infrastructure.” The album draws its theme and tune titles from transportation, a wry nod to the many traditional fiddle tune titles about roads and travel. Tix, $15.

8:30 pm MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. plus DONKEY and DAVE GLEASON, at The Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. www.attheecho.com. About MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO, from Stereogum: “Record Store Day brought a welcome treat in the form of a new Magnolia Electric Co. 7″, but that was just a tiny tributary to the relative flood of awesomeness that Jason Molina has cooked up with Josephine, his band’s first album in three years. It’s out this July. Which is such good news. This morning Pitchfork posted a lengthy Q&A with the Songs: Ohia/Magnolia great, discussing details and touch points for the forthcoming Secretly Canadian release: inspired by the tragic Oakland-fire death of touring bassist Evan Farrell, recorded once again by Steve Albini, ‘sonically more on the minimalist side,’ although ‘heavier’ in that there’s a ‘gravity to the playing.’ Read it. As for the listens, today we get a snatch at ‘Josephine,’ the set’s title track. It sounds like a Jason Molina song, which is to say it sounds great. There’s Jason’s reedy, bleeding quaver delivering a heart-aching confessional, cathartically castigating himself ‘a fool’ while the chords pull him up. It’s spare, dense, and to the point — try not to love it. And it’s just the start with this album.”

8:30 pm MISTER B plays for the “L.A. Music Awards Showcase” at Life on Wilshire, 6311 Wilshire Bl, L.A. His music has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and Mister B tells us, “We sent our new CD, ‘Just Like This,’ to the Los Angeles Music Awards and they invited me and the band to showcase for the judges back in March. Because of that showcase one of the songs from the CD, ‘Thank U Bo Diddley,’ was nominated as ‘Adult Contemporary Single of the Year.’ I just got a call from them again and we have another song being nominated! The song, ‘I Need Your Love,’ is being nominated as ‘Americana Single of the Year.’ How cool is that? They get about 10,000 CDs sent to them and some of the past showcase acts include No Doubt, Korn, System of a Down & the Black Eyed Peas so getting a double nomination is really nice. We’d love for you all to join us for this really cool event. We have Cathy on drums, Ed Estrella on bass, Leo Cates on lead guitar, Mister B on vocals, and our friend Ron Scott joining us on keyboards. It’s going to be a very special show.” $10, door.

Wed, Jul 29; literary/rock music event:
7:30 pm JASON BUHRMESTER at Stories, 1716 Sunset Bl, Echo Park 90026; 213-413-3733. Jason Buhrmester, editor of Inked, does a reading and book signing with lots of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath music to celebrate the release of his novel “Black Dogs.” It’s the fictional imagining of the story behind one of the most notorious crimes in rock history, the disappearance of $203,000 of Led Zeppelin’s cash. It vanished from New York City’s Drake Hotel in Jul 1973, in what was at the time the single highest safe deposit box theft in the city’s history. The robbery remains unsolved and the money was never recovered, and that’s briefly featured in the “Song Remains the Same,” the film that chronicles the band’s 1973 North American tour, which was rumored to have been delayed due to this huge financial loss. More at www.blackdogsbook.com and www.myspace.com/jasonbuhrmester

Venue is in the Jul ’09 ish of Sunset magazine (p.22). Summer afternoon or summer evening you can enjoy the venue’s back patio with an iced Americano, peppermint green iced tea, freshly-baked root beer flavored cookie, or an assortment of popsicles, ice cream bars and other frozen treats.

Wed, Jul 29; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm THE ALLEY CATS with THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS opening, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. THE ALLEY CATS are, says venue impresario Bob Stane, “A perfect blend of musical talent and comic timing. Their interaction with audiences combined with their spontaneous humor makes each show refreshing and exciting. Royce, Juan, Mando, and Sean never miss a beat as they bring their own contemporary style to the great songs of the ‘50s and ‘60s. They have recorded four albums, which showcase their rich harmonies, as well as the energy and humor from their live shows. Every Alley Cat performance is accompanied by the sounds of laughter and voices joining in to sing the melodies we all know and love. Tight harmonies, universal humor, and unbelievable a cappella energy,” have, indeed, made THE ALLEY CATS "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group" and the nation’s most-booked Doo-Wop group.
+
Plus, THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS with BILL BURNETT (The Backboners) and DUANE THORIN are new favorites at the venue. Bob Stane says, “You must see and hear them. You will be standing and screaming at the end of their show. No, they have no desire for your soul in any way, just getting your attention. A great creative blend of music and comedy. We have sneaked them into a few shows and they are just a bit of wonderful. You will be on your feet cheering for an encore. Lots of stuff from the 1960s and a grab bag of fun. Got a beret? Be cool. At the end you will be saying, ‘who are those guys?’ Fun, music and just perfect.” Tix, $15.

Surprise guest artists in the past have included Chelsea Williams, Jonathan McEuen, the incomparable Evan Marshall, Pacific Ocean Bluegrass, and many others. It is a free wheeling night of music, laughs and cake. Did we mention cake? Come see who Scott has in store for you this year! Remember that what Scott wants for a birthday present this year is you in the audience. Can you believe Scott was 12 years old when he started playing mandolin at The Coffee Gallery Backstage?” Tix, $15.

Thu, Jul 30; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8-10 pm THE FLUTTERBIES & FRIENDS at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; info and live webcast at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; info / web simulcast at www.kulakswoodshed.com - named for “Best Web Simulcast” in “The Best of 2008 / Top Ten” in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166. Tonight’s “friends” feature ADAM DANIEL, BART RYAN, and The Flutterbies. The latter bring alt-country twang, bluesy grit and folk sweetness blend with earthy vocals and edgy guitars, mixing salt with poetry, heat with harmony.
+
Adam Daniel writes what he calls “pop meditations - words that testify, music that bears witness.” Adam first came to public attention in 1999 with the release of his debut album “Blue Pop.” It’s “A Powerpop diary of the perils and joys of a claustrophobic romantic,” and All Music Guide named the CD "...among the best guitar-pop albums of the `90's..." Championed by fans worldwide,Blue Pop spent eight weeks in the CMJ (college radio) Top 100, garnered regular airplay on XM Satellite Radio and was featured in primetime TV programs and movies, including “Felicity,” “Jack and Jill,” “Jenifer” (starring Laura San Giacomo) and “The Matthew Shepard Story.” He co-wrote a ballad called "Christmas Morning" with country music mainstays John Berry and Kim Richey, recorded by Berry and released on the compilation “A Country Superstar Christmas, Vol. 4,” alongside tracks by Travis Tritt, Toby Keith and Dolly Parton. CD NOW reviewed the song as: "...one of the finest new tunes of this holiday season." Alongside his career as a singer-songwriter Adam also became an in-demand session guitarist, playing on recordings by The Bangles´ Susanna Hoffs and jazz saxaphone diva Mindi Abair. More at www.adamdaniel.com
+
Bart Ryan plays at 8:40 pm. More at www.bartryan.com
+
The Flutterbies perform at 9:20 pm. Featuring Maureen Davis, with Adam Daniel, Bart Ryan, Christopher Allis, Mark Nilan Jr. and Steve Whalen, The Flutterbies cite influences like Ryan Adams, Bonnie Raitt and Ava Gardner. Sultry Maureen Davis heads up The Flutterbies (pronounced "Flutter-byes"). Winner of “Best Female Vocalist” and “Best Country Band” at the South Bay Music Awards, 2009, and an Independent Music Awards 2009 nominee, Lead Singer Maureen was recently opener / background vocalist for Grammy-winner Michelle Shocked. Maureen's dusty, honey-smothered vocals evoke comparisons to Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Maria McKee.
+
The group has gotten TV and film placements on “House,” “Dexter,” “My Name Is Earl,” “JAG,” “Another World,” ABC Movie-Of-The-Week "Trapped In A Purple Haze," and other network and cable placements.
+
Their 2009 EP, “The Flutterbies Featuring Maureen Davis” was produced by Bart Ryan, engineered by Grammy-winner Seth Atkins Horan and co-written with Power Pop luminary Adam Daniel. The sweet, hypnotic "Hummingbird Heart" is the logo song for www.gettoknowusfirst.org, a campaign to reverse Proposition 8, used in behind-the-scenes films starring George Takai and Gloria Allred. It is playing in theatres before screenings at the Laemmle and Angelika theatre chains, July 10 to August 10, to an estimated 52,000 film patrons in Southern Cal, NYC, Dallas, Houston, Sacramento, and more. Finally, "Hummingbird Heart" can be heard in July and August on all worldwide Lufthansa flights.
+
The Kulak's concert features bassist Steve Whalen (of L.A. cult band The Gluey Brothers), drummer Christopher Allis (with credits as diverse as the Met Theatre's revival production of “Hair;” “Cowboy Jazz" chanteuse Circe Link, and TV commercials for Coca-Cola), keyboardist Mark Nilan Jr.; and, of course, Adam Daniel & Bart Ryan.

“SAN PEDRO SHANTY SING” at the Whale and Ale, 327 W 7th St, San Pedro 90731; 310-832-0363; www.whaleandale.com. Audrey Coleman wrote in FolkWorks, “If you arrive at the official start time, you'll find a chair at the table and friendly people who will let you look at their shanty books so you can sing along. No singing background required. Many of the twenty or so shanty fans who gather around the long wooden dinner table in the restaurant's cozy upstairs meeting room are volunteers with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. They sail ‘tall ship’ sail boats for youth training programs run by the Institute. For them, learning the songs that powered the labor on the 19th century clipper ships has become an extension of learning to sail the ships themselves. Added attractions are Alan's pennywhistle and concertina, Jeff's banjo, Kim's collection of flutes, and Dustin and Lindsay's robust baritone voices. When the table fills up, more chairs are set up around the room. And the Guinness flows freely till about 10:30 pm.” Venue is celebrated in the Yahoo! 8 pm Legendary songwriter JACK TEMPCHIN (The Eagles) plus I SEE HAWKS IN L.A., at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. JACK TEMPCHIN is the composer of the Eagles hits, “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone.” The legendary Americana songwriter began his career playing in San Diego coffeehouses alongside The Eagles, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Tom Waits. He soon became a principal co-architect of the genre-defining 1970s country rock genre known as The Southern California Sound. Tempchin penned two massive hits for The Eagles, and both are on “The Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975,” which, according to RIAA, is now at 29 times platinum, making it the best selling individual album of all time.
+
In the 1970s, Jack Tempchin wrote “Slow Dancing,” a huge comeback single for Johnny Rivers. In the ‘80s, Tempchin co-wrote another dozen hit songs with Eagle Glenn Frey for Frey's solo career, including “You Belong To The City,” “Smuggler’s Blues,” “The One You Love,” “Sexy Girl,” “I Found Somebody,” “Party Town,” and “True Love.” In 1994, he and Frey co-wrote a track for The Eagles “Hell Freezes Over” reunion CD, a song heard frequently on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” “The Girl From Yesterday.”
+
In 2007, Tempchin landed two more co-writes on the The Eagles “Long Road Out Of Eden” CD, “Somebody,” and “It’s Your World Now.” On his new 2009 CD, “Songs,” Tempchin has included his own version of the hit “Smuggler's Blues,” popularized on the 1980s “Miami Vice” TV Show.
+
Over his 40 year career, Tempchin has penned tunes with and for many career artists, including Tom Waits, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, Tanya Tucker, Trisha Yearwood, The Paladins, Chris Hillman, Patty Loveless, Randy Meisner, Steve Wariner, John Brannen, Richie Havens, Sammy Kershaw, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage and others.
+
"Actually the first real songwriter I saw and really got enthused about was Jack Tempchin..." -Tom Waits.
+
+
In addition, Jack Tempchin’s hourlong performance-interview with Roz Larman just aired on radio’s “FolkScene” on KPFK, where it is available for listening in the archive for this week.
+
I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. are a local favorite and they’ve developed a huge following in the British Isles. They’re performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” One reviewer wrote, "These freewheeling lords of California psych country approach their music as if it were a portal, an unseen threshold that, once crossed, promises a wholly unpredictable experience. The Hawks' singular style operates on an epic scale, exploring weird panoramas of hallucinatory metaphor with a sound as much traditional hillbilly as it is acceleratedlysergic-rock spontaneity. Any flight taken with I See Hawks In L.A. assures a view to startling new perspectives. Up, up and away."

What more could anyone want? What a double bill. Reservations strongly recommended at 626-398-7917. Tix, $18.

Madelyn Deutch is a eighteen-year-old who was an early graduate from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she studied vocal jazz. She has studied extensively with Tierney Sutton, Frank Morgan, Harold Wheeler, and Junior Mance. She has performed for the famous Alzheimer´s Association’s "Night at Sardi’s" charity event since she was ten years old. Highlights were singing with the casts of “Will and Grace,” “Frasier,” and a duet with legend Dick Van Dyke. She was a non-classical voice finalist in NFAA´s 2008 "young arts week" in Miami, and won the prestigious $5,000 Silver Award. She participated in the Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble. She performed three of her own arrangements for the Cherry Creek Ballet Company in Denver, Colorado in March of 2008. She was selected as an outstanding soloist for Downbeat Magazine’s 2008 Student Music Awards for her cover of the Beatles "Across the Universe." In June of 2008, she sang at the Kennedy Center in D.C. for Presidential Scholars. For two consecutive summers, she has been recording all of her original material with her duo band around Los Angeles. Her resulting album, "Songs in Common," could be described as "jazz indie-rock" with hints of pop and folk. Madelyn currently attends the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City on one of their most generous vocal scholarships. Tonight, she will sing with her group: Evan Vidar on bass, guitar, piano, and more (she tells us that he plays everything), and Sam Kaufman Skloff on drums. Tonight’s show is hosted by April Williams. All artists donate their performances; venue is supported by donations, and asks $10 per attendee in lieu of a cover charge.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
