August Finale, Aug 26 to 31, Acoustic Americana Music Guide, 2009

.
==================================
.
We’re back, and we’ve jumped-in with both feet to make a few updates for the remaining days of August. For example, five-time Grammy winner Flaco Jimenez is NOT performing tonight in L.A., despite being booked when we prepared the massive, 200-page-long edition for August 12-31.
.
Find out who IS performing, where and when, and what they’re all about, right here, right now (or whenever you want to know). And tell your friends to check it out, at

The editor has returned from the High Sierra, having weathered a storm at high altitude and encountered other surprises. Now, as expected, he’ll be sorting-through HUNDREDS of emails that arrived in his absence (about a thousand, actually. Do the math: average of 3 minutes per message = 50 hours to get through them all... plus dealing with new things as they arrive. If you have something urgent, send him a new message, otherwise, your patience is appreciated.)
+
WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

Chris Isaak is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter. He taught himself to play guitar and began writing songs as a teenager. He found early inspiration in classic country musicians, like Hank Williams, who his father liked on the radio. Chris’ 1989 album, “Heart Shaped World,” featuring the smash single “Wicked Game,” became a hit on the Billboard charts and earned Isaak widespread fame. Now an accomplished musician, actor and television personality, Isaak maintains a vigorous touring schedule, stars in critically acclaimed films and is the host of his own weekly talk show, “The Chris Isaak Hour” on the Biography Channel. His latest CD, “Mr. Lucky,” is his first non-holiday studio album since 2002. Filled with his distinctive, sweetly moody, slyly sexy retro-pop, Isaak's fans celebrate their own fortune that “Mr. Lucky” has arrived. The Hollywood Reporter said of the album, “It seems impossible that it's been seven years since Chris Isaak's last set of all-new songs. But Mr. Lucky makes up for lost time with 14 gems that showcase his sharp vocal stylings, particular brand of countrified pop music and (given his sex appeal) an equally impossible-to-believe preponderance of romantic heartbreak.”

+
JOE RATHBURN is a purveyor of the positive. He can sing and play guitar with the best of them, but what he writes stands as what he calls, an “outer manifestation of a inner vision that speaks directly to the soul and lifts the spirit.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Laugh, cry, ponder. Come see Joe.”
+
JOE RATHBURN has been a mainstay on the San Diego acoustic music scene since 1994. He's been a performer, promoter, and recording artist earning the respect of his peers and the pulbic alike. He's won nominations in the San Diego Music Awards as a performer and for his CDs, hosted several of his own songwriter showcases, represented Taylor Guitars at Folk Alliances, the NAMM show, and on their Expression System DVD, won First Place - Best Traditional Folk Song - Just Plain Folks Music Awards, won Best Songwriter in the San Diego based Honoring Acoustic Talent (H.A.T.) Awards, and continues to write, record, and pleasure audiences wherever he goes. His positive, strong guitar based original songs speak to the listener of the road less traveled, and where all the diners are along the way.
+
DALE LaDUKE is an award winning LA based singer-songwriter who has perfo4rmed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where he earned a “Listener Favorite” for his original, “Lone Ranger.” The song was later nominated for an L.A. Music Award. Dale was one of the founders of the popular Southern California country band FIVE WHEEL DRIVE that was one of five finalists (and the only country band) in Yahoo’s “Best Unsigned Band” contest in 2000, and the only group to have their songs in 6 of the top 10 slots in the country division of MP3.com that same year. Dale was flown to the red carpet awards show at Studio 54 in Manhattan that featured performances by David Bowie, Issac Hayes, Allanis Morriset and many others. The group recorded two demos for Warner Bros. Nashville, before finally disbanding. He is a principle writer on the popular children’s CD "My Very Own Music" (www.myveryownmusic.com) a wonderful collection that’s predicted to go Gold this year. He has been wowing audiences all over the country with his heartfelt songs about our lives. Tix, $15.

Wed, Aug 26; in the OC:
CANCELLED: 8 pm LILA DOWNS at The Grove of Anaheim, 2200 East Katella Av, Anaheim; 714-712-2700. Singer-songwriter Lila Downs grew-up between two very different cultures, in Minnesota and the Sierra Madre Mountains of Southern Mexico. She draws on her roots by tapping deeply into native Mesoamerican music and sings in the Indian languages of Mexico, including Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl.
+
Lila Downs started singing mariachi songs when she was eight. At 14, she began taking voice lessons. Returning to Minnesota for college, she studied voice and anthropology at the University of Minnesota with the intent of becoming an opera singer until she became disenchanted with the music department. After a few years, Lila began singing in the club scenes of Oaxaca and Philadelphia, together with Paul Cohen, an expatriate saxophonist who had been a clown and juggler in the circus. They began collaborating together on songs that would slowly mature into their most recent recordings.
+
"Exotic beauty and startling voice…she is a reflection of a 21st century world culture where ethnicity and national boundaries blur." - Lorenza Muñoz, Los Angeles Times. “Every so often a voice emerges whose distinctive color, texture, and passionate conception defy easy characterization. She covers the vocal waterfront, from the tense-throated nasal vibrato of Lydia Mendoza and Lucha Reyes to the nueva canción sensibility of Mercedes Sosa, with the chops of Linda Rondstadt, the sassiness and inventive range of Sarah Vaughan, and the sweetness of Tish Hinojosa." - Michael Stone, Roots World. They are self-described as “a Grammy-nominated Canadian folk-rock ensemble, fusing bluegrass and jazz.” Their music has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” But that’s not the whole story here. The Duhks were the subject, a few years back, of a FolkWorks cover story, and tonight’s show is a FolkWorks “Pick-of-the-month.” When we saw the Duhks earlier this year at the Stagecoach Festival, they were doing a dreadfully droning percussion-on-top set that was nothing like what we’d seen from them before. They have an outstanding fiddle player and the ability to deliver a first-rate folk-Americana show, but that’s not what they did at Stagecoach. If you go, let us know what you think. Oddly enough, this Thursday night series is presented by KPCC, a radio station with no music programming. Ride the Gold Line light rail to Memorial Park Station. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Free show.

“SAN PEDRO SHANTY SING” at the Whale and Ale, 327 W 7th St, San Pedro 90731; 310-832-0363; www.whaleandale.com. Audrey Coleman wrote in FolkWorks, “If you arrive at the official start time, you'll find a chair at the table and friendly people who will let you look at their shanty books so you can sing along. No singing background required. Many of the twenty or so shanty fans who gather around the long wooden dinner table in the restaurant's cozy upstairs meeting room are volunteers with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. They sail ‘tall ship’ sail boats for youth training programs run by the Institute. For them, learning the songs that powered the labor on the 19th century clipper ships has become an extension of learning to sail the ships themselves. Added attractions are Alan's pennywhistle and concertina, Jeff's banjo, Kim's collection of flutes, and Dustin and Lindsay's robust baritone voices. When the table fills up, more chairs are set up around the room. And the Guinness flows freely till about 10:30 pm.” Venue is celebrated in the Yahoo! Travel Guide as “the only Authentic British Restaurant in the South Bay of Los Angeles.”

It’s Flamenco guitar, rhythm and dance. The award-winning duo brings their evocative concert "Bailes Candiles." This intimate concert setting in the candlelit venue (with professional stage lighting) allows the artists to perform their best, most difficult flamenco works. Featuring guitar virtuoso Stephen Dick and fiery flamenco dancer/singer Katerina Tomás, this duet completely transforms the art of flamenco. Recognized with numerous awards and honors by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the City of Los Angeles, the Zellerbach and Haas Foundations, and “Meet the Composer,” Mojácar Flamenco is well known for their distinctive use of Katerina's footwork as a rhythmic instrument and Stephen's flamenco guitar compositions. 8-10 pm PAUL ZOLLO & FRIENDS at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; info / web simulcast at www.kulakswoodshed.com - named for “Best Web Simulcast” in “The Best of 2008 / Top Ten” in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166.
+
Joining PAUL ZOLLO tonight are ALLAN WACHS, DAVE MORRISON, LISA NEMZO, & LORIN HART.
+
PAUL ZOLLO - In a recent review of his album “Orange Avenue,” Louisiana writer Michelle Williams wrote that he “Has the most unique style I think I have ever heard, and he sings his ‘Somebody Else’s Troubles’ when he was still a teenager, toured Russia and Poland during the Cold War as a guitarist with a musical theater troupe, and ultimately moved to Los Angeles where he was the leader of the band The Ghosters. He’s collaborated with many great songwriters, including Darryl Purpose, with whom he’s written several songs, including ‘Crooked Line,’ the title song of Darryl’s 2003 album, and Steve Allen, Severin Browne, Michael Silversher, James Coberly Smith and Bob Malone. Malone recorded Zollo’s song ‘Halloween’ for a special seasonal EP release. Zollo’s first solo album ‘Orange Avenue’ was released on Windyapple Records and features a duet with the legendary Art Garfunkel on the John Fante-inspired ‘Being In This World.’ Called ‘one of the world’s most insightful storytellers’ by the great Chad Watson, Zollo is presently at work on his first album on Trough, which is being co-produced by Billy Salisbury.
+
ALLAN WACHS has been producing projects in film and video for over 20 years. Originally, and still, a singer/songwriter/guitarist, recording and releasing on his own label the internationally rare and obscure ‘Mountain Roads & City Streets’ (a proud member of the Acid Archive), Allan began working in film production in 1984 at the beginning of the Music Video age. He received a strong foundation in the craft of filmmaking working in various capacities and departments on hundreds of music video, commercial and feature sets between 1984 and 1986. In 1987 he began producing music videos and has since produced more than 400, from Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder to The Strokes. He has also produced more than 100 commercials for clients such as Toyota, Honda, McDonalds, SBC, Levis and many others.
+
DAVE MORRISON - "For a long time people have assumed the greatest Morrison writing songs in and about Los Angeles was Jim, but now the secret is out – it’s Dave. Dave Morrison. This is the real thing. People so often mourn for the days when people wrote meaningful songs. Well, folks, mourn no more. Stop your weeping and get this album. It doesn t get better than this. Dave Morrison has made a record." --Paul Zollo/Bluerailroad.com and American Songwriter Magazine. Dave Morrison’s album gets global airplay after its debut on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where he has performed live. More at www.myspace.com/davemorrisonmusic and www.davemorrisonmusic.com
+
LISA NEMZO has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Lisa’s song “Restless Soul” is on the “Fast Folk Vol 8” compilation and was chosen for the Smithsonian Institution collection of “Folk Music of the ‘90s.” Her catalog of songs includes originals that have made the charts in the US and Europe, including “Walking on Ice,” “Hard For a Girl Like Me,” “I Don’t Wanna Fool With Love,” “Feel The Night” (duet with Baxter Robertson used in “The Karate Kid” soundtrack), “Stayin’ With It” (duet with Rick Roberts of Firefall), “Hot Summer Love” (a hit song for Harvey Mason and Lee Ritenour), and “Short Cut” (a hit for Tanya Tucker). Lisa’s new record company, Dream Wild Records, debuted with an Ohana Productions DVD in early 2008, and Lisa's first CD in 10 years is due soon. More at www.myspace.com/lisanemzomusic
+
LORIN HART has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” She has been writing songs about basic issues of love and trouble for many years. She recorded her first CD with Hal Blaine and Don Randy of the famed Wrecking Crew some years back which brought her air play around the country. Lorin continued writing while raising four kids on her own. She is now preparing her second album and looking forward to many more years of finding a way to tell the story in song. Paul Zollo wants you to know she is the granddaughter of famed early silver screen stars John Gilbert and Leatrice Joy.

The North American premiere of Billy Bragg’s version of “Ode to Joy,” the choral finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, comes to the Broad Stage. The ASIA AMERICA YOUTH ORCHESTRA will perform the piece under the baton and musical direction of DAVID BENOIT. Bragg will perform and lead the audience in a sing-along of the choral.
+
Commissioned in 2007, Bragg translated the German words of “Ode to Joy,” (found in the fourth movement of The Ninth), for a new generation. It was first premiered with the London Philharmonic in 2008 at the Royal Festival Hall before Queen Elizabeth (see Bragg’s article about that at http://tiny.cc/PthAF - “How the Queen Charmed the Pants off me: Confessions of an old Leftie”). A prolific songwriter and social activist, Bragg’s discography includes punk, folk, country and protest songs. In 1995, Bragg was asked by Nora Guthrie to write music for unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics. The songs were later released on two LPs with Wilco and Natalie Merchant.
+
Beethoven had long wanted to set German poet/philosopher Friedrich Schiller’s poem about universal brotherhood, “Ode to Joy” (“An die Freude”) to music. (The poem was first published in 1786 in Schiller’s own literary journal, Thalia.) When Beethoven premiered The Ninth Symphony in 1824 it was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The Ninth Symphony has become a vehicle for inspiration, as documented in Filmmaker/Producer Kerry Candaele’s film Following the Ninth (to be released in 2010). The Ninth played over makeshift speakers during the 1989 protest in Tiananmen Square, as student leader Feng Congde stated “to create the ambiance of solidarity and hope…” Conductor Leonard Bernstein chose The Ninth to perform in East Berlin six weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In Japan “The Daiku” (“The Great Nine”) is performed as an annual ritual of national release and exaltation.
+
In keeping with The Ninth’s spirit of international connection the concert will feature an eclectic array of multicultural groups who will perform their versions of different parts of the symphony. Performers include: jazz singer Dwight Trible –vocalist with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet critically-acclaimed Bluegrass vocalist Susie Glaze – “…an important voice on the California bluegrass scene” (Bluegrass Unlimited); Susie tells us, “Rob Carlson [her Hilonesome Band’s most prolific songwriter] is composing something BRAND NEW for this event, by invitation from the producers. So this event will debut our new Carlson opus officially ‘inspired by Beethoven's Ninth.’ And yes, it will include a banjo! (You'll be very proud of us, I think!)”
+
Taking part is Kerrville Folk Festival’s 2009 New Folk Winner, singer-songwriter Ernest Troost – who combines folk and Piedmont blues style guitar pickings in his songs; Dafra Drum Ensemble - a multicultural group that performs dance and drumming from the Djeli/Griot tradition of West Africa; The Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project from Burkina Faso and pianist Justin Bischof – an internationally acclaimed conductor, concert pianist and organist. He is one of the few artists of his generation who presents complete concerts of improvisations on both organ and piano.

Sat, Aug 29:
7 pm THE FOLK COLLECTION at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and the phones rang off the wall. The Folk Collection could just as well be named “Your Favorite Songs of the ‘60s Folk Era” group. TONY UNGER, ED LABOWITZ, & MIKE SIROTA, along with bass man BOB PACKHAM, grew up in the 1960s where they fell in love with the story songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era. Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School. Mike joined the group in 2003 and Bob in early 2005.
+
Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages. With songs like “This Land is Your Land,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Where Have all the Flowers Gone?” and John Denver tunes, original compositions, and a medley of the great TV Western theme songs of the ‘50s, like “Rawhide” and “Bonanza,” The Folk Collection is reminiscent of groups like The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, The New Christy Minstrels, and The Brothers Four. But they have their own unique blend, sound - and humor. These guys grew up loving folk music, and the turnouts at their shows confirms that there are many baby boomers, as well as older and younger folks, who really like listening to words and harmonies - and joining-in when the mood and song fit. Their show is centered on folk music and good clean jokes. They are family-friendly and their audiences are multi-generational - from children to parents to grandparents, and even great-grandparents. Their show is a fun evening. You will leave singing, toe-tapping, and smiling. More at www.thefolkcollection.com. Tix, $18.

Mon, Aug 31; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
6:30-9”30 pm GARY ALLEGRETTO & BAND perform at the “Sherman Oaks Galleria Concert Series” at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, Center Plaza, 15303 Ventura Bl, Sherman Oaks 91403; www.shermanoaksgalleria.com. They’ve played live on the “Jimmy Kimmel Show” on ABC network TV, and you first heard Gary’s music on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Come and see what prominent Blues critics are raving about:
+
"Harmonica wrangler Gary Allegretto is one of the classiest acts in the music business today, working only with the best backup musicians and taking the time to craft music noted not only for its quality but for its authenticity... and what's best about his genuineness is its completely offhand quality. If someone complains to you that they don't make "real" blues records anymore - albums that sound like lost classics yet retain the freshness of an individual - play Many Shades of Blue for them..." ~ Robert Fontenot, Blues Revue Magazine, June/July 2008.
+
"... Gary Allegretto shines bright on this soulful program of down-to-earth comfort... Allegretto sings with a natural storytelling appeal that’s easy to understand. His harmonica gives the program a zest that ensures magnetic forces. One listen and you’re under his spell. One listen and his audience is sold on pure blues with a message that comes from the heart." ~ Jim Santella, Southland Blues Magazine, Aug 2008.
+
"This is honest music crafted from inspiration, talent, and skills, delivered at a high level of accomplishment. I'm really impressed with the maturity, facility, and depth in Gary's harp playing. He could sure teach a lot of harp players about tone, phrasing, and getting the most expression out of a very expressive instrument. His songwriting, singing and arranging are very accomplished too. No wonder (Many Shades of Blue) is being well received... Gary's music made me feel good, and that's a very attractive quality." ~ Bob Margolin, renowned bluesman from Muddy Waters Band, and blues columnist.
+
You can listen to tracks from Gary’s new CD, “MANY SHADES OF BLUE,” at www.cdbaby.com/garyallegretto and learn more at www.garyallegretto.com or www.myspace.com/garyallegretto

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
