Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Oct 13 through 16

.
.
FLASH! NEWS is here, of the two benefit concerts for Larry Wines (editor of the Guide, music journalist and radio host) who is recovering from eye surgery (without medical insurance). That news, of benefit concerts on Fri. Oct 23 at 8 pm and the BIG show on Sun, Oct 25, from 1 to 8 pm, are after the event listings, so you can get your tickets before they sell-out!
.
Hopefully everyone survived last weekend’s onslaught of 13 amazing festivals. We hate losing readers who collapse from exhaustion at their third festival in two days, only to find them a week later packed with the tents, stage risers, and tofu fryers. Last edition, with ALL those festivals, was so enormous that we have simplified the remainder of the week for you. Of course, there ARE more new additions in here, and a new edition soon to come!

We already declared “this is as strong a week of first-rate folk-Americana shows in clubs and coffeehouses and concert halls as we’ve ever presented.” And the week isn’t over. So the tension of soooo many decisions where to go hasn’t yet abated. Eased, but not abated. Good oats and fresh fodder for your trusty steed are still in order, because you’ll still be embarking on the trail of good music.
+
We have just added a cyber journey on Tuesday evening, when you can tune-in an especially exciting episode of “Ralph’s Back Porch” radio show from Texas, 5-7 pm Pacific time, with western stars JUNI FISHER, DEVON DAWSON, & JON MESSENGER.
+
There’s an abundance of music indoors and out throughout this month, and some in computerland when you need to take refuge from the rain. They don’t call October Rocktober for nothing, even in the land of acoustica.
+
Of course, it’s all here in the Guide, along with sooooo much REAL music you can see and hear LIVE, without embellished studio overproduction, soulless drum machines, pitch correction software, or other treatless tricks from Big Music’s bag of nonmusical fakery.
.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
The editor still can’t use the computer as his recovery continues to progress from eye surgery - but he does contribute some colorful phrases and somehow coax a coalition of the willing to keep it all going.
+
WANT TO HELP? We can send info for you to format and send back to us for inclusion in the Guide! Of course, we want to include YOUR acoustic gigs in Southern Cal or at festivals everywhere (and these days, it’s really important that we receive your events ready to go in the Guide’s format).
+
This update is made possible by the combined efforts of many, in many places. We continue to format the unbelievable amount of info that the editor already had in the Guide’s database, and combine all of it. (He’s got stuff here into late 2010 already.) We hope to post the remainder of October’s events soon, and keep this thing going without interruption.
+
The editor thanks everyone for the cards and letters and tasty edibles and homemade treats, and for whatever well-wishes await in the mountain of emails that he can't yet read. A few at a time, we are starting to read them to him (there are over 2,700 there, waiting!)

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT as the current principal cyber home of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and the Acoustic Americana Music News. Find us there at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com

WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION and enjoy contributing on that site, the cyber vestige of the now-departed print magazine of the same name. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks

WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with the latest edition of the “Somewhere Out There” column, available online at www.folkworks.org/content/viewcategorycur/89. We contribute occasional reviews or feature stories to FolkWorks. You can read the work of many good writers there, and you can sign-up for a free FolkWorks e-newsletter, too, all at www.FolkWorks.org

WE’RE ON MYSPACE and we DO welcome Myspace “friends.” But we don’t update the Myspace site very often. PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Same reason we don’t get sucked into doing Facebook or any of that other time-consuming and even more esoteric stuff.) Our Myspace page is still a good archive of old news and occasional current stuff, at www.myspace.com/laacoustic

Tue, Oct 13:
7 pm THE DEVIL MAKES THREE performs a live in-store set at Amoeba Music, 6400 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-245-6400; www.amoeba.com.
+
The Devil Makes Three had the goal of being "an acoustic band but to play our shows like a rock show," the band changed notions of what acoustic music could be. Mixing styles from the ragtime and country music of the twenties and thirties to the rock-and-roll and punk music of their adolescence, The Devil Makes Three pushes the boundaries of acoustic music. Citing influences as varied as Steve Earle, the Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Jug Band, and Django Reinhardt, the band combines tight vocal harmonies with idiot-savant finger style guitar to create an exciting and original sound. The end result is genuine blues music that thrives as much in a live setting as it does on The Devil Makes Three.
+
Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio - consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean - brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm and alive with three part harmonies which is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.
+
They have been constantly on tour, selling out dates across the country and in their neck of the woods on the West Coast drawing nearly capacity crowds nightly. This is all word of mouth. For the past 7 years, the Devil Makes Three have garnered fans the old school way, playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. When they hit the next town, venues are packed with folks that heard from a friend in a city that they'd been before.
+
They’ll do a sampler set today, and play their full concert at the Echoplex on Oct 15, 7 pm (see listing).

+
FISHTANK ENSEMBLE has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where listeners reveled in their unique eclectic blend of old time Americana flavored Romanian folk, Gypsy jazz, Swedish folk music, Balkan, Flamenco, Klezmer, Japanese smamisen, other folk sources, and original songs. This lively and unusual group are all talented musicians mastering their respective instruments, violin, saw, accordion, shamisen, flamenco guitar, contrabass, percussion and voice.
+
“For those in need of having their dervish whirled, Fishtank Ensemble are the rompin', stompin' leaders of cross-pollinated Gypsy music. French fiddler FABRICE MARTINEZ paid dues gigging Europe in a mule-drawn caravan, including stints in Romani villages. EL DOUJE is the master of 21st-century flamenco guitar, while AARON SEEMAN [aka Duckmandu] is the king of punk accordion. Audience eyes tend to focus on URSULA KNUDSON, not only for her virtuosic fiddle, saw playing and a voice that sings in octaves not yet invented, but also for her sensual beauty. The mix includes… a rock-bottom upright bassist, and we have a young band that is one of the most thrilling live acts on the planet.” - Michael Simmons, LA Weekly. Thu, Oct 15:
7 pm THE DEVIL MAKES THREE performs at The Echoplex, 1154 Glendale Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. www.attheecho.com.
More at www.thedevilmakesthree.com. There are other acts on the bvill tonight, so check with venue for set times. Venue is 18+. Tix, $13 advance, $15 day of show.

Thu, Oct 15, every Thu:
7-10 pm “POCKET GOLDBERG & FRIENDS SONGWRITER SHOWCASE” with this week’s guest artists TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS, plus bluesman SHAUN CROMWELL, at Arnie's Café, 6864 Foothill Bl (at Marcus), Tujunga 91042; 818-951-9089; www.myspace.com/arniescafe.
+
TRACY NEWMAN is the only singer-songwriter, so far as anybody knows, who has both an Emmy and a Peabody Award. (She’s still working on a Grammy.) Many of her charming original songs had their world premieres on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” when Tracy performed them live, and again as recorded tracks from her album. Others cover her songs in their live shows. Hear Tracy perform them herself with her REINFORCEMENTS, singer-songwriters LORI DOSWELL and GENE LIPPMANN.
+
Your Guide editor has written, “I get excited when I see that Tracy Newman's talents as a songwriter are receiving recognition. She has performed multiple times, live, on my radio show, ‘Tied to the Tracks,’ in L.A., and it will be great to share her CD with a national audience now that the show is entering syndication. Of course, Tracy's songs on her fine CD are out there working for her on other radio shows in the U.S. and Europe, gaining fans who enjoy substantial lyrics that, as Don Seigel observed in his review, take turns at irony and much more. As for the ‘more,’ there is charm and wit in every track on Tracy's CD. And what other performing songwriter has a band (The Reinforcements) comprised of two artists who are each performing songwriters in their own rights? For those who can catch one of Tracy's live shows, go. Whether or not you can do that, you're sure to enjoy her CD.”

8 pm PRESTON REED at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations, 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. He’s performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and has great press everywhere: “Spectacular…the best one-man show this reviewer has seen since Bruce Springsteen…A terrific performer” ~ The Irish Independent. “…. a major musical talent” ~ Manchester Evening News. “True spellbinding guitar mastery” ~ Guitarist Magazine. “Remarkable…. Mesmerising…” ~ UNCUT. “Will drop your jaw” ~ Playboy. “In a class of his own” ~ London Evening Standard. “Amazing….hypnotic” ~ The Scotsman. “Absolutely unmissable” ~ The Herald. “Heart stopping tour de force” ~ Billboard. “Reed's fiendishly intricate blend of blues, rock, country and metal styles ducks and weaves itself away from measurability” ~ The Irish Times.
+
Welcome to Preston Reed’s guitar revolution. Everything you thought you knew is wrong. All the rules you thought applied have gone. For one night only, logic and reason have left the building and musical magic fizzes in the air, as the New York visionary credited with reinventing the acoustic guitar takes you on a six and twelve string thrill-ride through the impossible and unforgettable. Night after night, venue after venue, Reed’s growing army of converts are unanimous. He came. He soared. He conquered. Pass it on.
+
“He can’t be doing that.” It’s a familiar reaction to the one-man symphonies on Reed’s 15 studio albums, as the maestro fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style. Yet this is not guitar wizardry for its own sake. Unlike many instrumentalists, the power and depth of Reed’s original song writing is as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, embrace, interlock and attack to create a sonic brew quite unlike anything you’ve heard before. Ears prick up. Heads turn. Feet tap. Hearts melt.
+
But “live” is where Preston Reed really comes alive. Walking onstage, he is one man armed with a single ordinary guitar. Then it happens. Before your eyes, Reed morphs into a fully-formed rock ‘n’ roll band, engaging acoustic, electric and resophonic guitars with a visceral display of slaps, taps, harmonic tickles and fretboard pyrotechnics that shred the rulebook and leave audiences breathless across the globe.
+
Preston Reed is changing the music scene one venue at a time. Lend him your ears. Tix, $20.

When people learn that singer-songwriter SHANA MORRISON is the daughter of music legend VAN MORRISON, the first thing they want to know is how much she has been influenced by her father. Van Morrison's writing has influenced his daughter's work, but not tremendously. Shana's gritty and bluesy approach to pop/rock and roots rock actually owes a lot more to female singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge. Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." The editor still can’t use the computer as his recovery continues to progress from eye surgery - but he does somehow coax a coalition of the willing to keep it all going.
+
WANT TO HELP?
+
First, see the “EARLY ANNOUNCEMENTS / BUY TIX NOW” section for the two benefit shows for Larry, one on Friday, Oct 23, and the BIG one on Sunday, Oct 25.
+
Want to help keep the Guide going? We can send info for you to format and send back to us for inclusion in the Guide! Of course, we want to include YOUR acoustic gigs in Southern Cal or at festivals everywhere (and these days, it’s really important that we receive your events ready to go in the Guide’s format).
+
This update is made possible by the combined efforts of many, in many places. We continue to format the unbelievable amount of info that the editor already had in the Guide’s database, add as much as we can keep up with from all that pours in, and combine all of it. (He’s got stuff into late 2010 already.) We hope to post the remainder of October’s events soon, and keep this thing going without interruption.
+
The editor thanks everyone for the cards and letters and tasty edibles and homemade treats, and for whatever well-wishes await in the mountain of emails that he can't yet read. A few at a time, we are starting to read them to him (there were over 2,700 there, waiting, the last time anybody dared to look!)
