Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Nov 10 through 17

.
The Guide’s extensive event listings and descriptions follow just TWO items:
.
1) NEWS QUICKIE, WITH A BIT OF CAJOLING TO GO AND ENJOY YOURSELF…
+
Bob Stane, renowned show biz impresario, was just honored by the Folk Alliance Region West (FAR West) as recipient of their annual Ambassador Award. He was just featured on the news broadcasts on FOUR L.A. television stations, and with a full page story in the Pasadena Star News and a similar amount of space in the L.A. Times. He was just in the Chicago Tribune.
+
Bob is, of course, the proprietor of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, in Altadena. That’s the venue that wins, every year, in FolkWorks, the recognition as the “Best Intimate Venue for Live Acoustic Music.”
+
But none of it is enough to keep his cozy little venue safe in the current economy, despite the fact that Bob books more “name” acoustic acts than any place else in the L.A. region. So, as he is wont to do, Bob is reverting to his comedic roots. He is circulating an appeal that reads, “Folks, now is the time to work The Coffee Gallery Backstage into your Entertainment Budget. The economy is hitting us all hard and, despite excellent shows we are having trouble filling our paltry 49 seats. I am not being an alarmist but we have to ask for your cooperation. We need to have you attend. Entertainment venues are dropping off the map. My previous business was begging on the street. I have this fine scruffy cat costume and I stand by the freeway with a sandbox in my paws and a sign on it that says, ‘Can't land on all fours.’ It's not dignified for a guy of my age. Don't make me go there again.”
+
Singer-songwriter and fiddle champ Stephanie Bettman replies, “No! We mustn't make Bob go back there again.” Having just come off the road, she adds, “Support your local independent music venues. They are struggling all over the country.” See you at the Coffee Gallery Backstage and some of the other delightful venues that work so hard to provide quality live music for all of us.
+
Supporting your local venue, your local artists, and your favorite touring artists won’t put you in the poor house. Because, ya know what? It’s CHEAPER to go out to an evening of live music than to go to a 90 minute movie in a multiplex shoebox theatre and buy popcorn and a soda. And music venues don’t subject you to 20 minutes of blaring ads and annoying images before the show. (Really and truly, live music is cheaper!)
.
======================
.
.
2) FRED STARNER MEMORIAL SERVICE is Sat, Nov 14, 3-6 pm, and open to his friends and fans and admiring public, at the Studio City Unitarian Church, 12355 Moorpark Av, Studio City 91604. Celebrate the life and music of “BANJO FRED” STARNER, Grand Duke of Hobo Minstrels, retired economics professor, singer-songwriter, past guest (multiple times) on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and well-known peace activist.
+
There will be music, stories, and the L.A. premiere screening of Fred's documentary film, "The Hobo’s Song: That's The Ticket, Roadhog," a fascinating look at today's hobos in America, still riding the rails, carrying on a way of life dating back to the 1930s and holding hobo gatherings and even music festivals. Fred did the film’s music, too. The film’s director, Bill McIntyre, will lead a post-screening discussion of the film.
+
For those who knew and appreciated Fred's gentle wisdom, wit, dedication to peace and his unique performance style - there was nobody who could play a folk song on a twelve string guitar or a banjo quite like Fred - his presence will be sorely missed. A good man is gone. Come celebrate Fred's life. Note the time change from that indicated previously. Co-Sponsored by Neighbors for Peace & Justice and the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club. Tue, Nov 10:
8 pm JENI & BILLY at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. They are the duo of Jeni Hankins & Billy Kemp, and they bring superb mountain singing from the coal fields of Southwest Virginia, enhanced by fine Carter Family picking and harmonies that work just right. Poetry too. Jeni Hankins & Billy Kemp perform new old music -- original songs in the Traditional Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Old-time and Appalachian ballad styles. Their top of the Folk DJ charts CD, Jewell Ridge Coal chronicles the changing fortunes of the Southwest Virginia coal mining community of Jewell Ridge. Though the subject is regional, the songs are meant to present universal themes -- earth & heaven, rich & poor, love & loss, work & rest. Jeni and Billy's music mixes delightful shocks and pleasant surprises. Mike Kelsey of WFHB Community Radio writes "Discovery of the month (or maybe the year) is Jeni & Billy, whose release Jewell Ridge Coal arrived a few days ago. I finally got it in the player yesterday, and have been totally captivated by it. The songs are great and Jeni’s voice makes the hairs stand up on my neck — a pure mountain voice that is beautiful."
+
Jeni comes by her mournful, lonesome voice honestly. Born in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia, her singing has been compared to that of Mother Maybelle Carter and Hazel Dickens. A born storyteller, she has been a writer almost since she could put pen to paper, a vocation inherited from her journalist father and grandfather. Jeni honed her powers of observation and turn of phrase as a student of Pulitzer Prize winning Northern Irish poet, Paul Muldoon. She has emerged as a first class song writer and poet with both modes deeply rooted in Appalachian culture.
+
Billy comes to the duo with a long history of music-making. He has been everywhere from Germany to the Grand Ole Opry playing his guitar and singing. A Baltimore native, he was introduced to the world of country music through the fateful movie house experience of seeing Bonnie & Clyde featuring Flatt &Scruggs's soundtrack, going back just to listen fourteen times. He has played numerous bluegrass festivals sharing stages with Jim & Jesse and Jimmy Martin. Billy has also performed solo at nationally known venues such as the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, the Lonestar Cafe in New York, the Kennedy Center and the Birchmere, opening for Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Kathy Mattea, Janis Ian, and Joe Ely among others. He has leant his talents to the shows of many folk luminaries including Oscar Brand, Christine Lavin, and Tom Paxton, as well as producing and touring with Debi Smith. Tix, $15.

A winner in the 2007 National Topanga Banjo & Fiddle Contest, Stephanie Bettman was called “the new Allison Krauss” at the 2007 Sedona Bluegrass Festival. She’s an outstanding, award-winning fiddler with rich vocals, high-energy and smart lyrics.
+
“That Stephanie Bettman has reached a level comparable to others like Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez and Alison Krauss so quickly it’s a bit uncanny.” – Country Jukebox, Germany. “Bettman jams it up like few others as she leads an ensemble with great imagination.” – Maverick Magazine, UK.
+
Stephanie & Luke have performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” where many of Stephanie’s original songs, both live and recorded, enjoyed their world premiere airplay. Named by Folkworks Magazine as one of LA’s Top Ten Female Singer Songwriters of 2008, Stephanie Bettman’s songs are sometimes sad, sometimes sassy but always stunning. Stephanie is a singer-songwriter-fiddler extraordinaire. Her partner, multi-instrumentalist Luke Halpin, is a highly musical talent in his own right, having performed on a great many recordings by a spectrum of recording artists.
+
Together, she and Luke have been winners in many local and national competitions including:
* Grand Prize Winners in the 2008 So Cal Live Acoustic Music Competition.
* Winners in the 2007 Topanga Banjo / Fiddle contest.
* Folk Works Top Ten Los Angeles based female singer-songwriters of 2008.
* Music Connection’s Top Twenty-Five New Music Critiques of 2008.
+
Inspired by the likes of Sam Bush, Tony Rice, and Mark O’Conner, Luke’s harmonies and his instrumental expertise compliment Stephanie’s fiddle and vocal artistry to create a performance that’s thoroughly entertaining. Venue impresario and Folk Alliance Ambassador Award honoree Bob Stane adds, “One thing’s for sure, if Stephanie Bettman & Luke Halpin are on the bill, you are in for an unforgettable performance that will have you hooked from the first fiddle line to the last sweet harmony.” Tix, $15.

Fri, Nov 13; in NYC:
9 pm THE SPRING STANDARDS at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10003. We heard them play when they were in Southern Cal this past summer. We recommend them and their clever gig promo, whether or not you make it to this show. They wrote with gig and venue news… The Story of Joe's Pub: Once upon a time in a land far, far away... there lived a hobbit named Joe... Joe was a regular hobbit with a very strange ability... he could taste sounds. When he would hear music he would get an explosion of the most beautiful flavors in his mouth. He would try to explain to people why he liked going to see music so much and no one would believe him. Until one day he decided that he was sick of having to explain himself to all of the other Hobbits and went in search of another land where people might understand him better. So he spent months and months building a boat of twigs and fig leaves and set sail on a voyage across the uncharted hobbit seas. To his surprise he found an island with the biggest trees he had ever seen, but these weren't ordinary trees... these trees were made of different metals, bricks and glass. He noticed these strange people walking around with wires hanging from their ears and determined that these people must love music as much HE did! So he traded in his gold yarn for a room, where he set up the most amazing stage and sound system ever seen in this world or any other, and called it Joe's Pub. Then he found the tastiest band he could find, to come and play in his new venue. This band gave him a firework display of flavor in his mouth, and they called themselves The Spring Standards. Come taste for yourselves. Venue is “A lovely space,” all ages.

8 pm “LOUD & RICH: RICHARD THOMPSON and LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III” perform separately and together at UCLA Live, Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org.
+
Tears and laughter? Equally likely when Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III join forces. Though Thompson’s an English folk-rock progenitor (from his Fairport Convention days on) and Wainwright comes from the American singer-songwriter realm, their songs dissecting the human psyche share an affecting poignancy and incisive wit. Thompson, who routinely is found near the top of rock guitarist rankings, was a standout at the McCabe’s 50th anniversary celebration at UCLA Live in 2008. Wainwright recently lent his wry takes to the “Knocked Up” soundtrack and put new perspective on material from his youth on the album “Recovery.” More at www.richardthompson-music.com and (Loudon Wainwright III info) www.lwiii.com. Tix, $48, $36, $24; UCLA students $15.

Fri, Nov 13:
8 pm BOP ENSEMBLE, with BILL BOURNE, plus special guest DAN JANISCH, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Three forces of nature meet in Bop Ensemble, a Canadian super-group featuring folk legends Bill Bourne and Wyckham Porteous, along with up-and-coming singer-bassist Jasmine “Jas” Ohlhauser. Combining Bourne’s grit, Porteous’ warmth, and Jas’ energetic delivery, the three manage to catch lightning in a bottle.
+
Dan Janisch is a California based songwriter and performer. His place in the scheme of modern American song is a present day verse and found melodies, but not quite fully divorced from a familiar tone of the American Folk song and Rock ‘n Roll.
+
Bourne, who is cut from the cloth of a classic troubadour, was called by Texas songwriting legend Tom Russell "a shining light in the North American folk and roots scene."
+
Wyckham Porteous matches Bourne's nearly legendary status and was called by Andrew Loog Oldham "Leonard Cohen meets Harry Dean Stanton, a warm, warm, performer whose voice is like a bottle of wine who has matured into a friend."
+
Jasmine "Jas" Ohlhauser is the wild card of the bunch, an exuberant 25-year-old who also plays with the Edmonton band Lilys On Mars. With the addition of her dance theatrics, Bop Ensemble shows come close to performance art.
+
Each of the three is great on their own... together they’re something truly special.
+
If there is a reason to consider Dan Janisch’s music it might be to derail the ever present idea that ‘A’ type of music is for ‘A’ type of person and so on, split down the line. Whether one be a rocker, a hip hopper, a punker, an americana-er, a hippie, a square, a 15 year old, a 60 year old, a cop, a robber, rich or poor, etc. Sometimes it might be good to shove some of that B#*LS*#T out of the way and connect differently; see we’re all people. Dan Janisch’s music is a fine place to do that; it’s music intended for all the people somehow. "If John Steinbeck had written music, he'd have written music like Dan Janisch..." - Don Grant, Freight Train Boogie. "...impossible to fit into a particular stylistic niche, and he's certainly not just another aging sidewalk performer..." - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide. "He gives broken hearts some lovely places to hide..." - Falling James, LA Weekly. Tix, $15.

Sat, Nov 14:
3-6 pm FRED STARNER MEMORIAL SERVICE open to his friends and fans and admiring public, at the Studio City Unitarian Church, 12355 Moorpark Av, Studio City 91604.
The world-class all-female string ensemble La Pietà, led by virtuoso violinist Angèle Dubeau, present an exceptional program including works by PHILIP GLASS and ASTOR PIAZZOLA. An accomplished soloist known for unique arrangements of classical masterworks and sophisticated interpretations of modern pieces, Québécoise Angèle Dubeau put together the 12-piece ensemble La Pietà in 1997. The charismatic, adventurous result, wrote the L.A. Times, is "exciting, dynamic... the well-drilled band played with agility, power and a fierce joy in the doing."

Angèle Dubeau is the only Canadian classical musician to have achieved two Gold Records for sales of 50,000 copies of a classical recording. Over her career, she has sold over 400,000 discs.
+
Praise for Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà:
"La Pietà tackled Vivaldi with vitality and velocity... crisp and tightly wound in the allegros, sensuous and lightly sweetened in the slow movements. Performances were consistently robust and inquiring, taking risks and taking nothing for granted." - Los Angeles Times.
+
"(Infernal Violins) has an infectious, devil-may care attitude... it hops with energy, sizzles and smolders." - Forbes Magazine
+
"Dubeau is a first-class violinist. The concert was a truly great recital and a perfect example of how to popularize music while maintaining the highest standards." - Repertoire (France).

8 pm STEPHANIE BETTMAN & LUKE HALPIN at The Grand Annex, 434 W Sixth St, San Pedro 90731; 310-833-4813; www.grandvision.org.
+
Together she and Luke have been winners in many local and national competitions including:
Folk Alliance Ambassador Award honoree Bob Stane adds, “One thing’s for sure, if Stephanie Bettman & Luke Halpin are on the bill, you are in for an unforgettable performance that will have you hooked from the first fiddle line to the last sweet harmony.”

The promo for this show asserts, “Whimsy never runs deeper, and depth is never more whimsical, than in the talented hands of the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell) who are Brooklyn's alternative rock legends, They Might Be Giants. Whether singing the cult-fave ‘Birdhouse in Your Soul’ or expressing youthful angst in ‘Boss of Me,’ the New York duo has steadily mixed adult smarts with childhood naiveté. 7 pm FELIX HELL gives an ORGAN RECITAL on Royce Hall’s 6,600 pipe Skinner organ, at UCLA Live in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. Organ wunderkind Felix Hell gave his first organ concert at age 9 – just two years after his first piano lesson. In the 15 years since the young German has played around the globe, from the Sidney Opera House to Lincoln Center, always dazzling audiences with, as the New York Times noted this year, “superlative technique, with especially fluent work on the pedals.” His complete mastery of the pipe organ’s broad sonic palette means he serves-up big-boned fugues or tender sonatas with equal aplomb. Hell has performed on more than 650 instruments around the world, but this recital marks his debut on Royce Hall’s Skinner organ, which was restored and expanded in 1999 to incorporate more than 6,600 pipes. Tix, $32, $24, $18; UCLA students $15.

An accomplished soloist known for unique arrangements of classical masterworks and sophisticated interpretations of modern pieces, Québécoise Angèle Dubeau put together the 12-piece ensemble La Pietà in 1997. "(Infernal Violins) has an infectious, devil-may care attitude... it hops with energy, sizzles and smolders." - Forbes Magazine

Tue, Nov 17:
8 pm EVAN MARSHALL, NATHAN McEUEN & SCOTT GATES at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
EVAN MARSHALL's accomplishments are legendary among other artists of the plucked string: The late Chet Atkins called him "one of the few great musicians of our time;" David Grisman put it simply: "the world's fastest mandolinist." Evan is widely regarded as one of the greatest mandolin virtuosos ever. His duostyle solo mandolin opening sets with the Riders of the Purple Sage (the band in which he plays fiddle) always command rapt attention and bring roaring cheers. Evan’s uncanny mando technique has been cited in the Raleigh-Durham Independent as "superhuman," in the Los Angeles Times as "remarkable," in the Washington Post as "truly dazzling," and in the Fresno Bee as "mind-boggling." The Pasadena Star News celebrates his "obvious virtuosity," and the St. Paul Pioneer Press says he has "in color and texture... a stunning mastery of interpretation."
+
NATHAN McEUEN grew up in and around the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by incredible music and talented musicians. At an early age, he started performing with his father, John McEuen, and brother, Jonathan McEuen. As a singer/songwriter, he constructs universal, nostalgic melodies and lyrics. His study and mastery of several instruments, including guitar, piano, drums and bass, allow him great compositional range. He also has the very rare and entertaining gift of beat-boxing. This comes in handy when he’s playing without a rhythm section.
+
SCOTT GATES has quite literally grown up on stage having spent more than half of his young life as a musician. Recognized nationally for his "mandolin prowess," Scott plays guitar and sings. Scott has performed on stage with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, blues master Rich Del Grosso, mandolinist Evan Marshall, Grammy Winner John McEuen, banjoist/ comic Steve Martin and a host of others. Scott brings his hard driving, innovative mandolin playing and a clear pure voice to his performances. Quite simply no one sounds like Scott, his variety of training and playing experiences has given him a tone and a style all his own. Tix, $18.

8 pm BRUCE MOLSKY plays the FolkWorks Concert Series at First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St, Santa Monica 90401; info, www.folkworks.org. It’s a rare opportunity to see BRUCE MOLSKY in a solo concert. Alone or with fellow musicians, guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades. He synthesizes these musical forms and refracts them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While he is most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues, from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

7 pm TOM RUSSELL plays the Ojai Concert Series, Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com. Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes. Russell grew up in California, graduated from the University of California with a degree in criminology and taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He also lived in Spain and Norway and played music at a circus in Puerto Rico. He began his musical career in earnest in the early 1970s in Vancouver, playing strip bars. Later he relocated to Texas and formed a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. Along with legions of fans, the media treats him with high regard: "perhaps the finest American folk-roots artist that most Americans never heard of." -All Music Guide. This may well sell-out. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

Four generations of what Vanity Fair rightly called “the first family of American folk” gather to revive the musical spirit of late patriarch Woody Guthrie. Led by Woody’s son Arlo, a star in his own right, “The Guthrie Family Rides Again” continues the clan’s tradition of sharing its music far and wide. Joining-in are Arlo’s son Abe, who has accompanied his father on keyboards and vocals since the 1980s, daughters Cathy and Annie, and Sarah Lee Guthrie with her husband Johnny Irion - one of the most acclaimed folk-rock duos of the last decade - and various grandkids. The elder generation is represented by Woody’s songs, both the classics and “new” compositions using lyrics uncovered in the Guthrie archives. Tix, $58, $42, $28; UCLA students $15.
