Since the new format IS new, you need to know that everything is NOT in “SPOTLIGHT EVENTS”– only the events that we are “spotlighting,” so this section can be a “quick read.”

THIS is where you’ll find the Guide’s “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks, “EVENTS-OF-THE-WEEK FOR ARTISTS” and whatever deserves a “Spotlight.”

Use “SPOTLIGHT EVENTS” together with its new companion – “THE SCENE” – to get the whole picture of what’s happening in your musical neighborhood. “The Scene” is organized by town and micro-region and day of the week to give you the odds of finding music nearby, plus, there’s a link each day for broadcast and internet RADIO SHOWS and TV with acoustic music.

(“THE SCENE” is still under construction, so we don’t yet have it completed for every day of the month: 7 days of the week, multiplied by unique listings for the first, second, third, and fourth times that day occurs each month, plus a “fourth-when-last” day of the month possibility, and a fifth time that day can happen in a month (because it’s always one or the other) so that means we must complete FORTY-TWO different versions before it’s all in place – we’re working on it!)

They’ve been described as “a majestic musical experience by some of the finest musicians in the world,” produced by BUDDY MILLER (who toured last year with “Three Girls and their Buddy,” with Emmylou Harris, Sean Colvin, and Patty Griffin). The CD, released March 1 on New West Records, is a collection of re-interpreted country songs and a pair of fresh originals.

Musician and series producer JEFF GOLD’s series is a much-needed acoustic concert presence in the West Valley, and this edition rates a “Pick” because it brings a fine lineup of people whose music you should know, if you don’t already. Women on the Move, in their guise as a larger ensemble, had the #1 editors’ pick at CD Baby longer than any other CD there, ever. Robert Morgan Fisher has won several awards, had the runner-up song in VH1’s Folk contest, and had two songs make the Hall of Fame on Neil Young’s “Living with War” website. Tedrow & Vreeland have lately been performing in a larger form, as a quartet, and have received two recent live performance reviews in the Guide.

Susie’s soaring high vocals have propelled her career since she sang solos on Broadway in “Big River.” Her friendship and devotion to the music of legendary Appalachian folk queen JEAN RITCHIE earned her an endorsement from the matriarch, and she performed a tribute concert for Ritchie with members of Jean’s musical family at the University of Pennsylvania.
Much of the HILONESOME repertoire is older mountain and bluegrass, and it mixes well with modern compositions by the band’s guitarist / chief songwriter, ROB CARLSON. Indeed, series bookers NICK SMITH and REX MAYREIS say, “Whether they are performing a classic Jean Ritchie piece or something they cooked up on their own, the music is a treat.”

Only thing is, the “Mane Stage” here is notorious for blasting apocalyptic sound into the other stages, half a mile away. So you may need to crowd the sound reinforcement at “your” stage to avoid things that, in past years, have included Brooks & Dunn doing a hiphop version of “Neon Moon,” and Kid Rock doing whatever he was doing at a supposedly “country” festival. Still, for so much music that you will like, it’s a fine bargain, and a lot closer than Telluride.

His song, “Today I’m Gonna Try and Change the World” was accompanied by bagpipes, fiddles, and marvelous harmonies from a choir. Whether or not you make this concert, he’s an artist to watch.
