Mon, Jul 11:
7 pm SILENT MOVIE CLASSICS WITH LIVE MUSIC, with the Oscar-winning "Best Picture of 1923," Paramount's "The Covered Wagon" and WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS performing their new score by WILL RYAN, BENEDIKT BRYDERN and DEAN MORA, at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, 8949 Wilshire Bl, Beverly Hills.
The evening brings multiple films, including rare, never-before-seen 3-D images from LON CHANEY's "Phantom of the Opera" (3-D glasses provided). Plus MORE classic silent film surprises. "The Covered Wagon," The main feature, includes ALAN HALE, one actor you may know from his much-later TV career; it stars J. WARREN KERRIGAN and LOIS WILSON, and features the star of THOMAS EDISON's 1910 film "Frankenstein," CHARLES OGLE.
That's the silent part. Now for the live performance of sound for this special night.
Think you’ve never heard WILL RYAN’s voice? Well, you – and your entire family – have been hearing him for decades, as Tigger, Eeyore, Goofy, Yosemite Sam, and hundreds of characters for whom he’s been the voice. That includes the speaking and singing voice of Eugene on Radio Adventures in Odyssey. His songwriting is marvelous. Will has written songs for Patti LaBelle and the Pointer Sisters, and his originals have been recorded by Jonathan Winters, George Gobel, Alan Young, and even Mr. T.
A true all-star band, tonight's lineup of WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS features internationally-performing conductor/composer BENEDICT “BENNY” BRYDERN (Hot Club Quartette, Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys) on violin, JOHN “PRESTO” REYNOLDS (Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys and many other notable bands) on guitar and banjo, KATIE CAVERA (in-demand '20s and '30s music specialist) on upright bass, multi-instrumental wunderkind CHLOE FEORANZO on clarinet (and maybe a lot more), RANDY WOLTZ on percussion, film composer DEAN MORA on piano, and WILL RYAN on guitar and humidophone.
Band leader WILL RYAN has two Gold Records, an Emmy and an Annie Award, BMI’s Pioneer Award, a nomination for the Writers Guild Award, he's the long-time Official Troubadour of the City of Burbank, and a whole lot more.
This special screening with live performance of the new score is a ONE NIGHT ONLY event, open to the public. More info (if you dig for it) is at www.Oscars.org and you can get advance tix with no processing fee (what a concept) at http://sa1.seatadvisor.com/sabo/servlets/EventSearch?presenter=AMPAS&venue=OSCARS-LINWOOD,OSCARS-GOLDWYN,OSCARS-HIGHLANDhttp://sa1.seatadvisor.com/sabo/servlets/EventSearch?presenter=AMPAS&venue=OSCARS-LINWOOD,OSCARS-GOLDWYN,OSCARS-HIGHLAND . 8 pm Texas music star CAROLYN MARTIN with bassist DAVE MARTIN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations, 626-798-6236.
No less than VINCE GILL wrote in Guitar Player magazine, “Carolyn Martin is a great swing singer. It’s rare to hear a singer that really swings these days, and she certainly does.”
A 2011 inductee into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, CAROLYN MARTIN is a multiple award-winning western swing singer and guitarist. Carolyn's performances combine classic western swing, jazz standards, and new material into a high energy show. Carolyn will be accompanied at the Coffee Gallery Backstage by upright bassist Dave Martin.
Carolyn has been described as “… a winning throwback to the days where emotion was measured and artful rather than loud and histrionic.” From European concert halls to intimate venues at home in Nashville, fans have come to know Carolyn as a vocalist with a unique sense of musical style, a charismatic stage presence and a voice that exudes passion and experience – the soulful elegance that is the very essence of music.
Carolyn was named as the 2008 and the 2010 Western Swing Female Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists. Her CD, “Swing” was a nominee for the Western Music Association Western Swing Album of the Year and as named as one of the Top 10 western swing albums of the year by DJ’s around the world. Carolyn’s latest project, “Cookin’ With Carolyn”, has been nominated by the WMA as both the Western Swing Album of the Year and the Album of the Year, and Carolyn has been nominated for the Outstanding Female Vocalist award by the WMA.
RANGER DOUG, of the Grammy-winning RIDERS IN THE SKY, says, “I have grown increasingly in awe of Carolyn’s talent: her taste, her musical sensibility, the thoughtfulness and care she brings to every line of every song she sings.”
JUNI FISHER, the Western Music Association 2009 Female Performer of the Year, says, “Carolyn is absolutely, positively the best!”

Fri, Jul 15:
8-10:30 pm FUR DIXON & STEVE WERNER play their CD RELEASE SHOW for their latest album, "Songs of the Open Road" at McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497. You should note that the scheduled closure of the 405 Fwy won't happen until midnight, so you can get over the Sepulveda Pass - and off the entire freeway system - in plenty of time after the show.
Certainly and deservedly one of L.A.fs favorite new folk duos, these two have toured and played lots of places to great acclaim. Their originals are so good you wonder they arenft waaaay up the Folk & Americana Charts. They mix-in some traditional favorites with their splendid vocal harmonies and Stevefs fabulous Merle Travis-style picking.
Fur and Steve tell us, "We'll be performing 'Songs of the Open Road' in its entirety plus all your favorite Fur and Steve songs. The concert features the death defying skills of John McDuffie on steel guitar, Brantley Kearns on fiddle, Paul Marshall on bass, and from Conjunto Los Pochos, Otoño Lujan on accordion."
Fur adds, “It's Steve's Birthday! Cake Anyone?” And you can meet Fur's Mom, Betty, from NYC. It'll be the first time she sees them perform live in concert.
This all-ages show will likely sell-out. It's the duo's only L.A. performance this summer, and with their all-star band, to boot. If you like to eat at Norm's at Pico & Sepulveda, just remember that this time, you should do that before the show - that way you can be home before the midnight closure of the 405 Fwy. Advance tix online at http://store.mccabes.com/home.php?cat=249. Tickets $15.

Wait for it. This one has a serious blues connection. It’s a chance to hear Rundgren perform blues and engage in discussion about his prolific career as well as his current album, “Todd Rundgren's Johnson,” a tribute to British Invasion interpretations of legendary bluesman ROBERT JOHNSON's compositions.
Right off the heels of his summer tour, Rundgren remains rock's original Renaissance Man. An acclaimed record producer, composer, songwriter, and recording artist , Rundgren is widely regarded as the acknowledged godfather of the marriage of music and multimedia. Having founded and fronted The Nazz, the quintessential ’60s power-pop psychedelic band, in 1969 he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the classic “Runt.” But it was 1972's seminal “Something/Anything?,” on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight. Among Rundgren's impressive 50+ production projects are albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall & Oates, and of course Meat Loaf's perennially multi-platinum debut "Bat Out Of Hell." After the interview, led by GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Vice President Scott Goldman, Rundgren will take audience questions and perform a selection of songs.
Doors open at 7:30 pm for the best seats. Tix, $25, available starting Wednesday, June 22 at noon at the Museum Box Office. All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum.

His longtime band Gods and Monsters, once included the late singer Jeff Buckley. After the interview, Lucas will take questions from the audience and perform a selection of songs. 8 pm THE SYNCOPATHS, the great contra dance band, in concert at the Caltech Folk Music Society series tonight in Beckman Institute Auditorium, and performing at a contra dance the next day, at Dabney Lounge, both on the Caltech Campus in Pasadena.
The Syncopaths, http://www.syncopaths.com, a tremendous contra dance band (and much more), delighted listeners on radio's Tied to the Tracks with a performance that's often cited now, a few years later. The Syncopaths are ASHLEY BRODER on mandolin, RYAN McKASSON on fiddle & viola, CHRISTA BURCH on vocals, bodhran, shakers, and foot percussion, and JEFFREY SPERO on keyboards. You can expect plenty of lively reels, waltzes and original tunes, of course, and this well-rounded group showcases the fine singing of Christa Burch on ballads, traditional songs and originals.
All are involved in performing and recording with other folks and most of them are music instructors.
RYAN McKASSON, http://www.ryanmckasson.com, an amazing and imaginative fiddler, was the youngest winner ever of the National Scottish Fiddle Championship in 1996. He has recorded with his sister and others as THE McKASSONS, and with ALISDAIR FRASER & NATALIE HAAS on their album, "Highlander’s Farewell.
JEFFREY SPERO, http://www.jeffandgigi.com, is one of the premiere dance pianists on the west coast, and an amazing player. He is also an accomplished dance caller. Both of them are composers.
CHRISTA BURCH, http://www.christaburch.com, was inspired early on by the music of SILLY WIZARD and has a recent solo CD, "Love of the Land," a fine collection of well-performed songs from the Irish, Scottish, Australian, Canadian and American folk traditions.
ASHLEY BRODER, a multi-instrumental Western States Picking Champion, http://www.ashleybroder.com, has toured extensively, performed several times on Tied to the Tracks, is currently working on a solo album, and continues to contribute her amazing mandolin abilities to several bands.
Check out a couple of informal YouTube videos to get an idea of their range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbzSOFMPTks&feature=related, features them playing amidst a roomful of dancers, and in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Myzccyet8, Christa sings the beautiful traditional song, “The Blackest Crow.”
Tickets for this show are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children, and they can be ordered by calling the Ticket Office at 626-395-4652, visiting the Ticket Office, or purchased for cash at the door. (You can also buy tickets for Loafer's Glory on August 13 and Kristina Olsen on September 17. More on the web page at http://folkmusic.caltech.edu including info on upcoming shows.)
The next day, Sunday, July 24, THE SYNCOPATHS play a contra dance in Dabney Lounge with caller Susan Michaels, beginning at 3:30 pm; for info on that, check out http://www.contra.caltech.edu/dance_072411.shtml for details of that one.

8 pm STAN RIDGWAY & MICHELLE SHOCKED play the outdoor summer concert series at Pershing Square 532 South Olive St. Los Angeles 90013; www.laparks.org/pershingsquare; 213-847-4970.
MICHELLE SHOCKED received her first international exposure in Europe, with her debut album, The Texas Campfire Tapes which was recorded at the Kerrville Folk Festival on a cassette recorder. Her break into U.S. came with the release of her 1988 album, Short Sharp Shocked on college radio rotations around the country, which was met with strong acclaim from listeners. The songs of Short Sharp Shocked are mostly about what it was like to grow up in rural Texas. Every song on this album is a gem.
She signed with Mercury in 1987. Captain Swing and Arkansas Traveler were recorded in 1989 and critically acclaimed. Captain Swing's style is not exactly swing, because it's also rock and roll. Arkansas Traveler includes a little swing, a little folk, and a bit of bluegrass.
Michelle recorded and independently distributed Kind Hearted Woman in 1994 after leaving Mercury. In 1995, she contributed an original song to the soundtrack for the film Dead Man Walking called "Quality of Mercy". In 1996, she released a studio version of an underground release of Kind Hearted Woman.
Starting in 2002 with the release of Deep Natural, Shocked established her own label, Mighty Sound. On May 12, 2009 she released her newest album, Soul of My Soul, on Mighty Sound. Shocked continues to make music as an independent artist and currently lives in Downtown Los Angeles.
STAN RIDGWAY, songwriter-guitarist and original Wall Of Voodoo vocalist, has taken a long and influential road. Raised in L.A., Ridgway began his love affair with Southwestern gothic 30 years ago as front man and co-founder of vanguard electro-art punks Wall of Voodoo, who he originally formed with the intention of scoring low-budget horror films.
Ridgway sang on the band's debut EP and first two albums, Dark Continent and Call of the West (which included the accidental MTV hit "Mexican Radio"). His darkly humorous, and richly cinematic musical tales of the ironies inside the American Dream have been compared to other classic songwriting iconoclasts like Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash and even hard boiled mystery writers like Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson, as well as twisted film makers like David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino.
Over the years, Ridgway has performed live on stage with The Cramps, Brian Wilson, U2, Devo, The Pixies, Van Dyke Parks, The Residents, Dave Alvin, Pere Ubu, Peter Case, Bill Frisell, Los Lobos, Ry Cooder, Colin Hay, The Stranglers, The Handsome Family, XTC, The English Beat, Psychedelic Furs, The Clash, The Go Go's, Rickie Lee Jones, Sam The Sham, Johnny Thunders, and many others. 2011 brings his tour in support of his new solo album "Neon Mirage." His stage performance will highlight songs from his deep catalog of past classic solo albums and Wall Of Voodoo favorites. Stan Ridgway’s Pershing Square show will bring song, story and spoken word.
