Sat, Feb 9, in L.A.:
9 pm Virtuosic folk-Americana composer-musician PHIL PARLAPIANO and his MEDICINE MEN play songs from his new CD "The Mordacious Mr. Squeeze" at the world famous Joint, 8771 W Pico Bl, L.A. 90025.
+
Phil's MEDICINE MEN are Tad Wadhams, Lynn Coulter, Butch Norton and Geoff Pearlman.
+
They are followed by JASON SINAY & APE, and Phil also plays with that band. So be there at 9 and stay over.
+
5 bucks from every CD sold at the Joint goes to the ALS foundation in memory of our friend, the late Eric Lowen (Lowen & Navarro, for whom Phil played keys and squeezebox.)
+
About Phil's new album: Phil started recording "The Mordacious Mr. Squeeze" with the Medicine Men and they were joined by drummers Herman Matthews and David Sutton, and by guitarists Doug Pettibone, Doug Hamblin, Chuck Kavooras, Donny Kilpatrick and Bruce Watson. Aubrey Richmond played some fiddle and Dan Navarro added some sweet backgrounds.
+
Phil says that, in addition to his accordion, "This record was done strictly on tape with no computer, no synthesizers and no drum loops. Just the sound of two drummers, bass and a few guitars playing, picked up expertly by a ribbon mike. Armed with an UREI 1176, the Medicine Men planned to re-inject, though not necessarily recreate some of the best neo-afro-redneck blues that one could in the new millennium." Fri, Feb 8, in Santa Clarita:
8 pm ATLANTIC STEPS present exciting Irish Music and Dance at The College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd, Santa Clarita 91355; 661-362-5304.
+
Ireland’s oldest dance form has arrived in America in thrilling fashion, in the form of the ATLANTIC STEPS. Led by extraordinary 27-year old dancer BRIAN CUNNINGHAM, it’s a cast of 10, bringing “sean-nós” dance to the world stage with a dazzling display of style, skill, and athleticism. He’s from Galway, Ireland, in Connemara County, on the beautiful, rugged Irish coast. The region is home to one of Ireland’s oldest dance forms.
+
Cunningham was acclaimed as "The Michael Flatley of sean-nós dance" on RTÉ Television’s “Tonight with Miriam.”
+
Atlantic Steps is the inspiring epic story of Ireland’s sean-nós (pronounced shawn-nos, meaning “old style”) dance, portrayed through the vibrant music, song, and dance of the West of Ireland. Centered around Cunningham’s joyful dancing and unbridled energy, the show moves festival and theater audiences to their feet, bringing sean-nós dance to prominence on the world stage.
+
One of many forms of Irish dance, sean-nós is an informal and spontaneous art form, traditionally performed solo. Unlike the better known Irish step-dancing, as seen in “Riverdance,” sean-nós is characterized by its "low to the ground" footwork, free movement of the arms, and improvisation. Creating a percussive music of its own, the derivations of sean-nós can be seen in such American forms as clogging, hoofing, and soft-shoe tap dancing.
+
Brian’s formidable cast of dancers and musicians includes KIERAN JORDAN, one of Irish-America's hottest talents who began dancing at age five. Kieran has been a major figure in the sean-nós revival in the US. The musicians include some of Ireland's top traditional artists, including the great SÉAMUS BEGLEY of County Kerry on accordion, and OISÍN MAC DIARMADA of the group TEADA, one of Ireland's premiere fiddlers today. All bring energetic eal to the robust, rhythmic, and highly-melodic tunes of Connemara and the West of Ireland.
+
The cast is dancers BRIAN CUNNINGHAM, KIERAN JORDAN, KEVIN DOYLE, AYAN HALL, & JACKIE O'RILEY, and musicians SÉAMUS BEGLEY on accordion, OISÍN MAC DIARMADA on fiddle, SEAN GAVIN on pipes and flute, and PAT DOOCEY on guitar.
+
Brian Cunningham is one of the most exciting sean-nós dancers to have emerged from Ireland in years. He has won all the major dance competitions in Ireland. What began as a pastime for him and his siblings was handed down by their grandparents as a tradition from the days of house dances. He is playing a hugely important role in reviving one of Ireland's oldest dance forms and transforming it into a wonderful display of dance style, skill and athleticism.
+
Atlantic Steps is an international touring adaptation of the phenomenally successful Irish show “Fuaim Chonamara,” which featured Brian and his siblings. Having performed alongside Irish greats including DÉ DANANN, THE CHIEFTAINS, SHARON SHANNON, ALTAN, DERVISH & TÉADA, Brian brought his dancing talents to headline the high profile “Volvo Ocean Race” spectacular in Galway during 2009. When 20,000 people danced the night away at Galway’s docklands within striking distance of the Atlantic Ocean, Brian was convinced of the worldwide potential of the sean-nós (old style) dance.
+
“Brian's enthusiasm, exuberance and good nature exudes in his refreshing performance which should be enjoyed by all.” -- Matt Malloy, The Chieftains.
+
Tonight is the last of their three Southern California shows.
+
You can watch videos of their performances and read more at www.jrafinearts.com/atlantic-steps. There’s more on the troupe’s own site at www.atlanticsteps.com.

Fri, Feb 8, in VC (Newbury Park):
8 pm CLAUDIA NYGAARD, WOMEN ON THE MOVE TRIO, and the MIGHTY ECHOES DOO WOP GROUP play the "FIRESIDE CONCERTS" Series at the Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Rd (at Borchard), Newbury Park. Hosted by BOB KROLL; sponsored by the Conejo Valley Recreation & Park District.
+
CLAUDIA NYGAARD has earned endorsements from Tacoma Guitars and Intellitouch Guitar Tuners.
+
She started as a singer in noisy bars and restaurants, and has definitely paid her dues. Along the way, she learned to engage the attention of an audience in those clubs, and later -- when she made her living on the county fair circuit -- she polished that skill into an art. Competing against power generators and mainstage acts with huge sound systems, she learned to rely on her quick wit to keep the audience interested, and she became a captivating storyteller who has been aptly described as "Will Rogers without the rope."
+
Claudia has performed at over 150 fairs and festivals in 47 states and across Europe, and two years ago was chosen one of the "Emerging Artists" at the "Falcon Ridge Folk Festival" in New York.
+
Her voice, compared to “amber honey” by folk DJ Rich Warren of Chicago, has been praised on both sides of the Atlantic. This is Claudia’s first appearance at Fireside. More at www.claudianygaard.com/epk.html
+
WOMEN ON THE MOVE TRIO "wowed our audience last year and they're back by popular demand, to share even more engaging and uplifting music," says series host Bob Kroll. (The Guide attended that show, and he is tellin' the truth.)
+
They are singer-songwriters Joan Enguita, Linda Geleris and Trish Lester, who blend their talents to perform moving original folk / pop songs brimming with angelic harmonies, womanly wisdom and touches of humor.
+
Winners of the Vocal Competition at the 2011 "Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest," they traveled to Arizona last fall and were highlighted at the "Prescott Folk Festival," where they brought down the house at a special Woody Guthrie Tribute Concert. They'll be sharing songs from their forthcoming new CD.
+
MIGHTY ECHOES DOO WOP GROUP have performed with Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, The Shirelles, The Penguins, The Four Seasons, Chubby Checker,The Moody Blues, Patty Page and many others.
+
They've entertained saxophonist and former President BILL CLINTON and were featured at The Superbowl. Their TV credits include Murphy Brown, Family Matters, Brooklyn Bridge and Frank’s Place. Their clients include Walt Disney, Nissan, Dr. Pepper, Sony, Mitsubishi, Crystal Cruises, AT&T and more. Way over in Altadena, Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario and Ice House founder Bob Stane will tell you they are among his all-time favorite acts.
+
Now in their 25th year, they’re made to order for those who love songs like "Duke of Earl," "In The Still Of The Night," "Under The Boardwalk," "Good Vibrations," and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Pure nostalgia, this a cappella group that pays tribute to '50s and '60s pop music.
+
The Mighty Echoes include baritone Harvey Shield who hails form England and wrote The Bay City Roller’s “The Way I feel Tonight." The bass voice of Charlie Davis has been described “as deep as an open trench” and Jon Rubin brings an ethereal alto-spheric tenor voice. Second tenor or lead is John Lathan, the newest member of the group. Their performance evokes an era "when times were seemingly less stressful and uncomplicated." (Yeah, except for the threat of global thermonuclear war.) This is their second appearance at Fireside. More at www.mightyechoes.com.
+
NOTE:
Richard Berman, who was scheduled for this show, had to cancel as he's been in the hospital with a treatable medical problem and is expected to make a full recovery. Bob Kroll says, "We'll book him for his next western swing. We're really excited about this show as it will be jam-packed with top notch entertainment."
+

Jazzedelics have plenty of star power. The brainchild of singer-percussionist Tony Jones and guitarist Doug Perkins, is based on a simple premise: What if seminal rock giants of the 60s had written their songs in a jazz framework? To bring this idea to life, they needed the talents of Larry Steen on electric and upright bass (Dave Weckl, Eric Marienthal, Mose Allison, Bob Sheppard, Jimmy Buffet, Bennie Maupin), Chris Smith on keyboards (Jefferson Starship, Supremes) and David Anderson on drums (Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Stanley Clark, Chaka Khan, Eric Marienthal).
+
With music from Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Animals and others, Jazzedelics is a mash-up band that will excite audiences looking for something familiar but out of the ordinary.

Complimentary coffee, tea, hot cocoa and "Alvas" bottled water are provided. It’s okay to bring your own food & drinks. Admission is by suggested donation, $15.

I perform in the lounge area, where there are tables and chairs, and the live music is piped throughout the building. Take a Sunday drive to the scenic Port of L.A. and hang out for a while. I bet you'll enjoy it."

The Guide adds that you can go in the morning and tour the Battleship Iowa or the Victory ship, both anchored on display in San Pedro, then go for lunch and great live blues music with Bernie at CRAFTED.
