3) Friday’s FESTIVALS
.
Fri, Apr 12; Mon-Sat, Apr 8-13, pseudo-festival,
FREE, in Long Beach:
11 am-sunset 49th annual "CONGRESSIONAL CUP YACHT RACE" features free concerts, up-close racing action, and more, all FREE at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, #15 39th Pl, Long Beach. After-hours music goes ’til late at night, Friday & Saturday.
+
The brings a beer garden, rum bar, and seafood and barbecue stations to the pier. Some money spent on those items benefits children through local nonprofit Young Horizons.
+
You're so close to the sailboat action you can shout to the sailors between races. The masts almost brush you as each pair of boats race by. Top ranked sailors from around the world compete in this, the longest-running sailing Match Race in North America. View the action from the "Congressional Cup Stadium" on the pier with bleacher seating, and snack bar and more available.
+
There will be 10 skippers, who compete round-robin, going head-to-head against one another in pairs to rack-up points for advancement. They include Great Britain’s Ian Williams, ranked #1 in the world, who is going for a three-peat at the Congressional Cup. The others, and their rankings, are Laurie Jury (New Zealand, #7), Taylor Canfield (U.S. Virgin Islands, #8), Eric Monnin (Switzerland, #13), Simone Ferrarese (Italy, #15), Jordan Reece (Australia, #16), Mathieu Richard (France, #18), Adam Minoprio (New Zealand, #217), and Ed Baird (USA, unranked, but a former winner). The 10th skipper is the winner of the Ficker Cup, determined by a race the preceding weekend.
+
The Congressional Cup winner receives the event's signature Crimson Blazer and the largest share of a $60,000 purse.
+
As for the music? It's been hard to track-down, despite featured advertising that it's included. Saturday night is a concert by BOXCAR SEVEN (rhythm & blues, soul revue). Other bands perform throughout the event, though it seems to include multiple genres , and sometimes it's deejays instead. But the daily race viewing can't be beat, and it's all FREE.
+
More on the race (but nothing on the music) is at www.thecongressionalcup.com.
+
SATURDAY’s listing for this event will include other nearby music options in / near Long Beach, as well.
