7-10 pm Monthly “DAVID HARVEY PRESENTS” showcase brings performances by ANNY CELSI, KAREN NASH, TRYSETTE LOOSEMORE, SKIP HELLER & THE HOLLYWOOD BLUES DESTROYERS, and A WORD" WITH DYLAN BRODY, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001.
+
Featuring:
+
KAREN NASH is equal parts Country and Rock 'n roll. She can drop you to your knees with a ballad then blow you away with a rock song. She reminds me of Linda Ronstadt when she smashed through the charts in the '70's. Karen's love and joy in her music is infectious. She played Lilith Fair, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Kerrville Folk Festival just to name a few. And she has great stories of her favorite former neighbor Warren Zevon. Karen has a truckload of new songs for a new CD she's doing this year. She's the real deal. www.karennash.com
+
ANNY CELSI is the real-deal. Her songs rock with the echos of classic R&B, the best of pop, and deep down roots music that sets your soul on fire. Think Aimee Mann meets Lucinda Williams with the Soul of Aretha looking on. Anny has such a powerful voice with perfect phrasing that even whispers shoot down your spine. The LA Weekly recently cited her as “one of this city’s smartest and catchiest pop songwriters.” www.annycelsi.com
+
TRYSETTE LOOSEMORE is a stunning songwriter and performer. She creates such beautiful and classic ballads and pop songs that remind me of the great songs of Hal David / Burt Bacharach and Elton John / Bernie Taupin. A classically trained pianist turned singer songwriter, Trysette grew up on the northern rivers of NSW Australia and with influences such as Elton John, Lionel Richie, Eagles, Carole King, James Taylor. She was signed straight out of university by Warner Chappell Music. Over the years Trysette has been on a journey that has led her to become a consummate entertainer and international touring artist. www.trysette.com
+
SKIP HELLER is one of Los Angeles’ most wide-ranging artists, whose approach is traditional but not locked into retro period conventions. He's played with NRBQ, Stan Ridgway, Yma Sumac, Phil Alvin, Cannibal and The Headhunters, Rick Danko, Big Jay McNeely, and many many more. He has composed film, TV and even cartoon scores (including the Dexter's Laboratory classic "Ridin' That Hog"). He lives in Hollywood, performs regularly with his Hollywood Blues Destroyers, and writes a monthly column for All About Jazz. http://www.reverbnation.com/skiphellertrio
+
And special guest spoken word radio personality - "A WORD" WITH DYLAN BRODY. Dylan Brody is an award winning playwright, a thrice published author, a humorist and a story-teller. He's a writer for the Huffington Post and a new contributor to NPR's OffRamp on KPCC. He is also a martial artist, but those skills will not come into play during the show. Unless something goes horribly wrong. http://dylanbrody.com/

+
The blues is life itself to Bernie Pearl. A guitarist with an upbeat,finger-poppin' picking style he learned at the elbows of bluesmasters Sam 'Lightnin' Hopkins,Mance Lipscomb,Mississippi Fred MacDowell, and others. Yet,Bernie Pearl is no hidebound traditionalist. As music critics and aficionados have said for years,he is a craftsman who packs his songs with melodic interpretations that are new and personal each time he picks up his vintage Martin or National. To hear him tell it,"I'm not a retro player. I'm playing real blues for right now."
+
Also featured with Bernie is legendary vocalist, saxophonist and songwriter/arranger, bluesman Bobby Hurricane Spencer. One night on the bandstand, after a particularly hot sax solo, J.J. Bad Boy Jones turned to the tenor man and said, "Bob, you the Hurricane!". It stuck and that's what he's been called ever since. His trademark sound can be found on records by Timex Social Club, Sonny Rhodes, JJ Bad Boy Jones, Jimmy McCracklin, just to name a few and his original music appears on the Grammy nominated Force of Nature album by Koko Taylor.

Fri, Nov 28, at UCLA:
8 pm “MILTON NASCIMENTO – UMA TRAVESIA” (a crossing), brings MILTON NASCIMENTO, the legendary Brazilian artist, celebrating his 50-year career with a stop on his current world tour at Royce Hall, Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus in Westwood / Los Angeles 90095.
+
“One of Brazil’s national treasures” - New York Times.
+
“An iconic singer-songwriter who also revolutionized Brazilian music by adding rock, funk and jazz.” – San Francisco Chronicle.
+
It’s Brazil’s legendary singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy Award winner Milton Nascimento. Joining him in celebrating his 50-year career and his latest album "Uma Travessia," is Wilson Lopes on guitar, drummer Lincoln Cheib, bassist Gastao Villeroy, Kiko Continetino on piano and Widor Santiago on saxophone.
+
Undeniably one of Brazil’s greatest stars, Milton Nascimento is the iconic singer-songwriter whose transformative early work fusing Africanized jazz with Latin-American fold allowed a generation of artists to free themselves from bossanova. Since his debut, Nascimento’s magnetic stage presence and astonishing tonal range have delighted audiences for the better half of a century. He has recorded more than 37 solo albums, received four Grammy awards, and collaborated with elite musicians the world over, including Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Duran Duran, Sarah Vaughan, Esperanza Spaulding and countless others.
+
Versatility has been a hallmark of his career, since he catapulted to fame in 1967 at Rio de Janeiro’s second International Song Festival, where he introduce three instant standards, “Travessia, ” “Morro Velho, ” and “Maria, Minha Fe.” Nascimento has written dozens of tunes so harmonically rich and luminously melodic that they’ve irresistibly enticed jazz interpretation. Herbie Hancock recorded a series of albums with him, starting with the 1969 CTI album Courage.
+
Nascimento’s 1974 performance of Wayne Shorter’s “Native Dancer” brought him to the attention of jazz audiences in the US and Europe. Nearly 40 years later, his extraordinary lyricism and originality are still strikingly present, and his voice remains a marvelous instrument shaded with stunning emotional power. With a seasoned vocal palette, he expertly crescendos from stage whisper to roar.
+
Nascimento received the Latin Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award, but even after decades performing, Nascimento's extraordinary lyricism and nimble vocals continue to dazzle audiences the world over.
