SOMETHING WONDERFUL
ON SUNDAY
<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>-<^>

Have you ever wanted to perform with major music stars? Have you ever wanted to bring joy to folks who are shut-ins? What if I told you you could take part in a single event and do both?

Well, YOU CAN.

The 33rd Annual “LOS ANGELES HOLIDAY CAROLING FESTIVITIES” happen this Sunday, December 7, and YOU are invited to lend your voice (and bring your acoustic instrument), and join-in, to bring the healing and inspiring power of music to shut-ins. The “stage shows” feature such music luminaries as CARL VERHEYEN, stellar guitarist from SUPERTRAMP; PRESCOTT NILES, bassist from THE KNACK; FLORENCE LaRUE from THE FIFTH DIMENSION; stars from the L.A. Opera; and let’s take just one from the long list, one who is actually representative of the caliber of musicians who take part – LISA HALEY, Grammy-nominated Cajun-Zydeco fiddle-player / vocalist who played for played with Brian Setzer, Randy Newman, Lyle Lovett; and there are MANY, MANY more with global stage and screen and star recording session and gold and platinum records to their credit.

AND, there are plenty of ordinary folks who just want to join their voices in this wonderful event.

Everyone is there, making music, for the same reason: to bring joy to shut-ins for the holidays. There’s a great sound crew and professional photographers who take part, too.

So, how does this work? It is ALL very well produced and planned in advance, and for the past 32 years, it’s been carried-off with happy precision. By 4 pm, small groups are dispatched to go room-to-room and sing and bring cheer to bedridden shut-ins in the first facility visited. There are lots of groups of carolers, some with acoustic instruments, so the residents in each room hear plenty of different groups. Then, right on schedule, we all walk over to the second facility, where we do one or two shows in their dining hall, starting at 5:30 pm sharp. (The production company splits into two troupes, going different places, to spread more joy.) Then we pile-into carpools to drive a mile or two to the third stop, where we do another one or two "stage" shows in the dining hall. We finish with a group photo of the cast, then we all adjourn to a nearby restaurant that stays open late just for us, to mix, mingle, and pig-out.

Vincent J. Leinen is the Founder and National Director of these Caroling Festivities, and as soon as the L.A. show is finished, he’s off to bring similar events to 21 other cities across America.

ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO TAKE PART? Just check-in with Vincent and register by giving him your name and letting him know if you are bringing another acoustic instrument in addition to your voice. Contact Vincent at 818-342-9336 or by email at BD754@lafn.org

If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses ... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. They're performing on the heels of the release of Under The Influence, their fourth album release through Atlantic Records. The album features contributions from superstars Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and more! For Caponigro, Ireland and Britain became sites of creative energy to which he returned repeatedly. Sat, Dec 6, in Altadena:

+
GEOFF MULDAUR is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock scenes centered in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock, NY. During the 1960's and '70's,Geoff made a series of highly influential recordings as a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Paul Butterfield's Better Days group, as well as collaborations with then-wife Maria and other notables (Bonnie Raitt, Eric Von Schmidt, Jerry Garcia,etc.). He left the stage and recording world in the mid-1980's for a working sabbatical but continued, however, to hone his craft, albeit 'flying beneath radar'. He composed scores for film and television, garnering an Emmy in the process, and produced off-beat albums for the likes of Lenny Pickett and the Borneo Horns and the Richard Greene String Quartet. And his definitive recording of "Brazil" provided the seed for - and was featured in - Terry Gilliam's film of the same title.
+
With his magical voice and singular approach to American music intact, Geoff is once again touring the world. Recent performances have included The Lincoln Center in New York City, The Getty Art Center in Los Angeles, Royal Festival Hall in London, as well as folk and blues festivals in Newport RI, Edmonton Canada, Dublin Ireland, San Francisco CA, Bergen and Notodden Norway to name a few. Geoff may be heard regularly as a guest on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" and has been feature d on a variety of National Public Radio shows, including “Weekend Edition” and “All Things Considered.”
+
Geoff's newest albums have met with high critical acclaim and feature Geoff's unusually crafted interpretations of classic, oftentimes obscure, American material as well as his own unique compositions. The recordings include performances by David Lindley, The McGarrigle Sisters, John Sebastian, Van Dyke Parks, Roswell Rudd, Amos Garrett, Lenny Pickett and Howard Johnson in supporting roles. In addition to tours and recording, Geoff continues to apply his arranging skills to a variety of projects for albums and film. Although he is known as a musicians musician, it is clearly his voice that most identifies him.
+
Writing about his albums, the New York Times noted that Geoff Muldaur "...succeeds not because he copies the timbre and inflections of a down-home African American but because his voice - reedy, quavering, otherworldly - is so unusual that [the music] he sings becomes little more than a context, a jumping-off point."
+
And about a recent performance in London, The London Times wrote, "Immaculate guitar picking was matched by vocals that were rich, and bore out the guitarist, Richard Thompson's praise for him: 'There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.'"
+

Experience the momentary creative liberation experienced during the Czech New Wave of the mid-1960s in this series of radical films.

Born of dissent against the Communist regime, these films encompass a revolutionary style that influenced directors around the world. However, such creativity was short lived after the implementation of the Warsaw Pact curtailed freedom of speech, heightened censorship, and forced the emigration of some key directors. All of the films in this series were banned by the Soviet-controlled government in Prague, and most were not seen again until the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

+
Meeting via a chance YouTube sighting and fueled by a rare musical chemistry, Dan Frechette, guitar-vocals, and Laurel Thomsen, violin-vocals, both powerful and magnetic talents in their own rights, prove that musical magic is not only possible, but alive and well. In a relatively short time frame, the Alt-folk duo has overcome adversity to circumnavigate North America, logging over 25,000 miles, 130 concerts, and releasing their debut CD.
+
With influences ranging from Folk, Classical, Old Time, and Celtic, to Gospel, Jazz, Vintage Country, Rock N' Roll, Blues, and Bluegrass, Dan and Laurel flow seamlessly through genres, tempos, stories, and moods, embodying each style with virtuosic command. With exuberance, heartwarming harmonies, soundtrack ready violin and guitar lines, and stories of irony and triumph, wit and humor, delighted audience members speak of "falling in love" with music all over again.
+
"Dan and Laurel’s concert in our home drew a standing ovation and a demand for encores. Everyone left with big smiles!" ~ Margo and Tyler Baker, California house concert hosts
+
GARY STOCKDALE is a 2-time EMMY-nominated composer, who has composed music for television shows such as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch; To Tell the Truth; Comedy Central’s Last Laugh; Cowboy U; The Independent Spirit Awards; A Home for the Holidays (CBS), and 8 seasons of Showtime’s award-winning Penn & Teller: BULLSHIT! Gary’s well-known theme for that show garnered him an EMMY nomination. He also wrote music for THE ARISTOCRATS, by Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza.
+
Fresh out of college, Gary met Oscar-winning composer Henry Mancini, under whose mentorship Gary learned the craft of film music composition, as well as singing on many of Henry’s movies. Since 1990, he’s been the main composer for the “Bad Boys of Magic,” Penn & Teller. Leading the band on their critically-acclaimed variety series Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular, he received his first EMMY nomination for his work on that show.
+
As a performer and singer, Gary has appeared in NBC’s Studio 60: Live on the Sunset Strip, was an original member of the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and was a soloist in the cult classic musical TV series Cop/Rock. He has also lent his voice to such films as Avatar, The Simpsons Movie, The Watchmen, and TV’s The Family Guy. Sat, Dec 6, in L.A.:
9 pm BELA FLECK & ABIGAIL WASHBURN play the Regent Theater, downtown Los Angeles.
+
They are the First Family of Banjo.
+
Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn have mastered the deceptively intricate art of the duet. Their performances embrace a diversity that is almost unthinkable - coming from just two banjos and one voice. Washburn's beguiling composing, playing and singing blend with Fleck's riveting and virtuosic musicianship to create music both unique yet familiar in texture.
+
Fleck, a 15-time Grammy winner, has collaborated with Chick Corea, Oumou Sangare, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dave Mathews, Earl Scruggs, and the entire Cleveland Orchestra for his Banjo Concert 'The Impostor.'
+
Washburn's banjo has taken her far beyond the usual old-timey comfort zone, musically and geographically. An alumnus of Uncle Earl, the powerhouse all-female stringband, Abby's adopted second homeland is China, and her music resounds with echoes of Appalachia and the tidal wave of emerging Chinese cultural influence.
+
Together, Fleck and Washburn employ the relatively rare 3-finger and clawhammer banjo duet to create an explosion of musical white heat. No wonder that they are married and have a new baby.
