Abundant Acoustic Fall FESTIVALS, News, TICKET ALERTS, & more - Fri-Sun Sep 25-27 & beyond

.
.
A VERY full edition. First, the editor's musings in a foreward about the connection of arts, the artists' mind set, and current events...

So the Pope is in and Boehner is out. As artists, we know — each time we step on stage — that everything is connected to everything else, and it only works when we are mindful of that myriad of connections.

Friday morning, Pope Francis reminded the UN of the essential consciousness of an integral ecology, and the need for encounter and dialog and collaborative cooperation to achieve that. Meanwhile, soon to be ex-Speaker Boehner, who is Constitutionally third in line for the Presidency, was throwing in the towel because bitter, rancorous, divisiveness within his own party has made consensus — even dialog — impossible. (Boehner recently said of his job as Speaker of the House, "Garbagemen get used to the smell of garbage.")

Simultaneously, the "Values Voters Forum" was happening in Washington, DC. When GOP presidential candidate and US Senator Ted Cruz, speaking from the podium, told the ultraconservative attendees of Boehner's resignation, the crowd broke into wild applause, complete with hoots and cheers. Presumably, one of their own was walking out. But not really. Absolutists accept nothing less than total agreement with their own hard line, and react harshly to any contradictory facts.

What contrast. Such an affront to reason and to —humanity.

Thursday, the Pope had addressed the US Congress, and emphasized the necessity of working together to get something done, when so much remains undone and needs are so pressing. Sometimes personally powerful moments produce big decisions. Catholic John Boehner, knowing he presided over a fractious body that he had once slipped and deemed "ungovernable," saw the writing on the wall. By the end of October, he will resign both the speakership and his seat in congress. A Washington insider says "The Pope gave him (Boehner) a way out."

We're not sure who would even want the top job in Congress, because of what comes with it — the pomposity, the confrontational, arrogant, intransigent absolutism demanded by those in his own party who had long sought a coup to depose this Speaker.

But. We hope, as we do for any new leader, that he or she, the next Speaker of the House, will be someone with art in their soul.

Someone who rejects the imposing demands for pounding, grinding, marching-one-way, deafening rhythm that crushes the life out of creativity. Because we need someone who seeks chords from the full range of every instrument, who consciously engages the entire orchestra, with hope and confidence. Rather than hearing only loudly amplified single notes from random instruments all being demandingly plucked and blown and pounded at once.

We need someone who, because their essential being requires it, seeks and crafts harmonies. And plays them back to everyone to hear how divine that can be, simply to enable those who are singularly focused to discover what else is possible as they discern that the integration of differences creates not just harmonies, but resonates with the infinite.

Call it the music of the spheres. Call it whatever you like. We need it. Our leaders need it, whether or not they know it. So we must require that inner need for art from all who seek to lead or influence us — whether that's in the hallowed halls of power or the elementary school classroom. Art and music are integral with our humanity, with our capacity for understanding, with our ability to feel and be motivated by empathy, with our aspirations to achieve great things, and ultimately, to attain our best selves. That simple element produces multidimensionality and enables so much.

Or maybe the presence of the Pope — the first pontiff who had a career as a scientist, on top of everything else — has our expectations impossibly high. A 78-year-old pontiff with one lung, a physically challenged hip, and sciatica, getting out of bed at 4 am, carrying his own suitcase, riding around in a compact economy car, walking among the people and listening wherever possible, touching the poor and sharing their lunch instead of a highfalutin banquet, reminding us that the planet has no spare parts, and challenging America's oft-consuming worship of money. And all with so much light and energy.

If we get the government we deserve, we have been undervaluing our expectations. Because our standard for leaders with private helicopters, $40,000 gas hog cars, and bloated bank accounts has a criteria for art that's stuck with portraits painted to replicate Instagram photos with bad light and buying black velvet paintings with oversize frames from thrift stores.

As for covering the music scene? We're still writing the Guide on a phone, after our road computer was destroyed. The grindstone does consume noses. We earnestly hope you find an event in here that you like, and that you GO attend it. And please peruse the NEWS FEATURES and act on the TICKET ALERTS. We need to know it was worth the many hours required under considerably awkward conditions to do this to enable your fun.

Oh, by the way, we have news of MUSIC ON TV - "the small screen scene," in yesterday's edition, and that covers Friday and beyond on the tube. Which probably isn't a tube anymore at su casa.

So take a break from dumb bosses and freeway crush hour and too much heat too late in the year, and from an election campaign that started waaay too early, and from the crazyness crassness of world affairs.  There's plenty of art and music here for you.

a)  Live web VIDEO shows from the Central Coast...

Almost nightly, there are FREE LIVE WEBCASTS from the Central Coast of California presented by the prolific “SONGWRITERS AT PLAY” showcase series, with full acoustic lineups. Shows start as early as 6:30 pm and as late as 8 pm; check their website. This series offers as many as six or seven live video webcasts each week – plus an occasional more-produced retrospective radio show that is an audio web simulcast.

Performing host STEVE KEY uses any of several music halls operated by wineries or microbreweries, or various other nice venues – all somewhere between Paso Robles and Santa Barbara. Attending most of their shows in-person is usually no-cover. Quite remarkable.

Shows stream FREE, live on the web, at:

http://centralcoastlive.com/watch-our-live-streams-concerts-here

These webcasts feature multiple cameras and truly superior sound. They even have provisions for you to watch it through your big flatscreen tv. Their site explains all that. But it is a little confusing because there’s no “click here to watch” button. Just learn the start time from their site, then be online at that time and the show starts when it starts.

b)  FOLK-AMERICANA radio with live music, BROADCAST & WEB, this weekend on KPFK, Los Angeles

Radio station KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles is a Pacifica station, non-commercial public radio but not affiliated with NPR or anybody else. It refuses corporate donations or sponsorship.

Its mix of programming includes some folk-friendly music shows on weekends with live (or recorded live) music, and its other music programming is five-day-a-week world music/world beat on "Global Village" that rarely brings something that Folk-Americana fans like — usually, if it's something you like at all, you really like it. Even thought that show has no North American music day.

So it's the weekends that Folk-Americana listeners should note, along with the on-demand archives.

After any given music show's broadcast, you can hear it for two weeks on KPFK's audio archives, at:

http://archive.kpfk.org

Here are notes on KPFK's live broadcasts:

SATURDAY...
Live, 6 to 8 am (Pacific) on Saturdays is a rotating mix of shows on an inscrutable schedule. Sometimes, it's Mary Katherine Aldin's "Alive & Picking" show, sometimes it's a show hosted by an original member of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS, and sometimes it isn't folk-friendly at all.

SUNDAY...
Catch the live, weekly, "FolkScene" radio show which features a wonderful pre-recorded and nicely produced live performance-interview hour. That's every Sunday from 6-8 pm (Pacific) on broadcast and web radio, live on 90.7 FM Los Angeles and at www.kpfk.org

Right before that, at 5:30 pm (Pacific), try Uncle Ruthie's "Halfway Down the Stairs" in her new time slot. This is a show intended for children that emphasizes multicultural non-sexist ideology, with some live music. Quirky, but enjoyed by all ages.

When their "home" radio station, KPFK, isn't constantly begging for money and pre-empting the station's few music shows (an increasingly rare experience), it presents some delightful Folk-Americana-friendly programs, 6-8 am Saturday and 6-8 pm Sunday. Check them out live, broadcast or online or catch them during each show's brief availability in the online archive. Then you might just want to support the station without being badgered.

in Michigan:
7th Annual "ART PRIZE" with half-a-million dollars in prizes determined by public vote of attendees, happens all over Grand Rapids, Michigan, and it truly is unlike anything else. There are live music performances, kinetic sculpture displays, visual and performing art exhibitions, and the word "more" gets a workout.

In every conceivable kind of venue, from hockey arenas to office building courtyards to parking lots and alleys turned galleries, to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, this mega-multi-faceted event must be experienced to be believed. The Guide was there for a few days of one ArtPrize, and left saying "wow."

Get a taste of it by signing-up for their free e-newsletter, "ArtPrizeTonight." It's "a comprehensive rundown of what's happening every evening during the event this fall."

Moreover, it'll give you a handle on why you wish this was happening in YOUR town.

Their Sep 1st newsletter edition covered live music, theatre, and film screenings, and declared "there's something for everyone at ArtPrize after dark." For once, a boast like that appears true.

Smartly conceived, "ArtPrize Tonight" features three different categories of evening programming — On Stage, On Screen and Critical Discourse — and there's at least one activity for you to enjoy every night of the 19-day event.

Now, it helps that Grand Rapids is a town with five colleges/universities and a river just barely big enough for boats and bridges. Ready-made audience and marvelous setting. But what they do with the annual event will either inspire you or make you jealous.

Here are seven "must-attend 'ArtPrize Tonight' events." (Read the full lineup at: www.artprize.org/tonight ) ~

√ "Critical Discourse." The popular event-within-an-event returns to ArtPrize Seven, Sep 28-Oct 6. It's a series of panel discussions and art critiques that offers something for everyone. From the televised "Why These Finalists?" programs to an examination of color and design trends, "Critical Discourse" — powered by "ITC, Your Energy Superhighway" — is charged conversation providing art-world context to the ArtPrize event this fall.

√ FOLK MUSIC CONCERT. "The Voice" finalist JOSH DAVIS performs at St. Cecilia's. The Michigan native headlines a benefit concert for St. Cecilia Music Center on Oct 4. Raised in the folk tradition, Davis will perform a solo show with openers (local musicians) TROLL FOR TROUT and FAUXGRASS QUARTET in the historic Royce Auditorium. Get tickets at the ArtPrize site if you can be there.

√ THE AVETT BROTHERS, the Grammy-nominated folk-rock band, take center stage alongside singer-songwriter BRETT DENNEN and his band, and Grand Rapids' own THE CRANE WIVES, Oct 3, at an impressive, one-of-a-kind riverfront Tent Venue experience in downtown Grand Rapids, known as The Eddy. Get full concert details (and tickets, if you can be there) through Porterhouse Presents; link at ArtPrize website.

√ "MICHIGAN HOUSE @ PYRAMID SCHEME." Invoking the vibes of this year's Michigan House installation at SXSW, a variety of acts presented by Dizzybird Records and Middle West — including FLINT EASTWOOD, HI-KER, and MPV — take to The Pyramid Scheme stage, Oct 7 at 8 pm.

√ "LEATHER AND LACE: WOMEN OF ROCK" at Rosa Parks Circle. This returns for an encore performance on Sep 27 at 6 pm. The Grand Rapids Circle Theatre production presents "a wide range of music that spans decades. 'Leather and Lace' features songs by Janis Joplin, Heart, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Carly Simon, and more." The concert is FREE and open to the public.

√ "WATERFRONT FILM FESTIVAL." This is the opening aspect of "ArtPrize On Screen." It debuts with the Waterfront Film Festival hosting evening and daytime screenings of cutting-edge independent cinema — showcasing 22 films, many with Michigan ties, including six feature narratives, five documentaries and ten short films. You can find the full screening and event rundown, and details on Waterfront Film Festival weekend passes at www.artprize.org/on-screen.

√ "ART PRIZE AWARDS & AFTER PARTY." On Oct 9, after two weeks of viewing and voting on art, they'll announce the winners of $500,000 in prizes at the Seventh Annual ArtPrize Awards. If you're there, head down to Rosa Parks Circle (or tune into WOOD TV8, which might also be online at the ArtPrize site) at 5 pm (Eastern) for a PRE-SHOW CONCERT, and at 7:45 pm for live ArtPrize Awards coverage. FESTIVAL,
in Arizona:
64th Annual "REX ALLEN DAYS" is an iconic western music festival, a benefit event with "good ole fashioned fun to be had" in the historic town of Willcox, Arizona.

Rex Allen Days has been around since 1951. The original event was planned as a benefit for the local hospital. Since then, countless other charitable organizations have benefited from the proceeds of the weekend. The proceeds are also used to present scholarships to Willcox High School graduates. The first Rex Allen Days featured a rodeo, parade and an appearance by Rex.

Many western performers have stepped in to support the cause since then. The late Rex Allen was born 40 miles from Willcox, AZ and grew up playing guitar and singing at local functions. Fame came when he made his way to Chicago and performed on the "National Barn Dance" on WLS-AM. He soon found himself making successful records with a string of country and western hits in Hollywood for Mercury and Decca Records. Beginning in 1950, Allen starred as himself in 19 Hollywood western movies, becoming one of the top-ten box office draws of the day. His character was depicted in comic books, while on screen, he personified "the clean cut, God-fearing American hero of the Wild West who wore a white Stetson hat, loved his faithful horse Koko, and had a loyal buddy who shared his adventures."

Rex Allen (Sr.) was gifted with a rich, pleasant voice, ideally suited for narration and was able to find considerable work as a narrator in a variety of films, especially for Walt Disney Pictures wildlife films and television shows. The work earned him the nickname, “The Voice of the West.” He even did the narration in the 1973 animated film “Charlotte’s Web.” He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6821 Hollywood Boulevard. In 1983, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Rex Allen Jr. will be on hand to celebrate the life of his late father, the western actor, singer, Arizona cowboy and narrator of classic Disney films. Rex Jr., singing in his smooth, rich style, had hits with “Goodbye,” “I’m Gettin’ Good At Missing You (Soitare),” “Lonely Street,” “Two Less Lonely People,” “With Love”, “If I Fell in Love With You”, “It’s Over,” “Drink it Down, Lady,” “Cup of Tea” (a duet with Margo Smith), and is known for other songs. He is also the writer and performer of the alternate state anthem of Arizona, titled “I Love You Arizona.” Rex Jr. was a regular on The Statler Bros. Show on The Nashville Network in the 1990s, and he hosted the show "Yesteryear." Following in his father’s footsteps with his speaking voice, Rex Jr. was the narrator of the Jim Carrey movie "Me, Myself and Irene," and he is the writer, director and actor in the stage show "Gone Country," a Las Vegas hit of the late ’90s.

Kicking off an extended weekend on Oct 1, Rex Allen Jr., a member of the Western Music Hall of Fame, will do what he does each year, making the rounds performing. He plays first at the Senior Center at 10:30 am, followed by Willcox Elementary School at 1 pm, then the Northern Cochise Community Nursing Home at 3 pm. A cowboy gentleman and dedicated artist, he will also be appearing at his annual “Question & Answer” session to be conducted in Windmill Park on Oct 3rd at 5 pm, where he will sing his rendition of the National Anthem for the Rex Allen Days Rodeo.

Main festival events...

Thursday night, the Annual 'Cowboy Hall of Fame" Banquet inducts local “cowboys” into the truly unique group of people who helped contribute to Willcox’s history.

Friday has a variety of events, including the Rodeo Queen Competition, appearances by Rex Allen Jr. and other entertainers at the elementary school and the NCCH Nursing Home. Afternoon/evening brings gunfights, antique tractor pulls, cowboy poetry entertainers, Rex Jr.'s "Celebrity Panel Q & A," old Rex Allen movie showings, and a special wine & cheese benefit for the Rex Allen Museum.

Saturday starts with a large parade that goes through Historic Downtown Willcox. Rex Allen Jr does two concerts at the Wilcox Historic Theater. Show times are 2 & 5 pm, with all seats reserved.

Order tix to Rex Jr's shows at 520-254-2101.

Rex Jr. says, “Rex Allen Days features many of my dad’s favorite events like rodeos, a parade, and of course, music. We fit in everything we can! So if fans or friends see me out and taking part in the weekend activities, please, by all means stop and say hello. This is my favorite weekend of the year and how lucky am I that I get to celebrate and honor my dad with friends that loved him, too!”

Annual “DURANGO COWBOY POETRY GATHERING” brings a big time annual fete of Western Music and Cowboy Poets and history-as-entertainment, and it all fills multiple venues in Durango, Colorado – that mountain town best known as the lower terminus of the world-famous narrow gauge steam railroad to high-up Silverton.

There are trail rides, train rides, concerts, programs with book authors and historians, everything from cozy indoors to hands-on outdoors with reins in your hands, beholding the sites of a lot of history. French fur trappers were here. Butch Cassidy passed this way. So did William Jackson Palmer and his Denver & Rio Grand three-foot-gauge “Mainline through the Rockies” (a long alpine branchline is still there as a steam-powered tourist-hauler). Durango is absolutely the right place to do this, and the event organizers take full advantage of what the area has to offer.

This is “A celebration of the rich culture and heritage of the American cowboy ~ The Gathering is an exciting, fun-filled event with evening performances and Saturday daytime sessions. Poets and musicians from throughout the country grace our intimate stage at The Strater Theater, performing classic and contemporary poems and songs that will bring tears to your eyes and keep you in stitches.”

Our friends at the Pasadena Folk Music Society did a nice description: "This is like a mini-Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest day, also in a wonderful spot, surrounding the historic Stowe House and featuring jamming, workshops, main stage performances, and, of course, the contest! Once you pay the modest admission price, you can enter the contest and perform a song to compete for prizes. Or you can sit back and listen to some great music of the fine hired performers, and mingle with the jamming musicians. It is called the 'Fiddle Contest,' but you'll hear a similar mix of instruments and singing that you hear in our series. And you could even take the train up there, then you can walk a mile or so or you can call a cab."

Frankly, contestants are needed at all levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced players, in banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and "other instruments." Signups are at the gate, and the contest rules, a few of which may be new this year, can be found on the web site at

http://stowhouse.com/events/fiddlers-festival/

Festival producers want us to encourage all acoustic musicians to enter the contests. They tell us, "It's extremely important that we continue to support this event, which has been going for 44 years, as attendees and as contestants. If there are insufficient entries in some categories, those categories may be dropped."

The 2016 “NAMM SHOW” is the music industry’s biggest annual trade show, music conference, and gathering of music retailers with manufactures and endorsed musicians who very notably perform. It features opportunities for music educators, school administrators, college students, and NAMM Foundation Partners to attend, learn and connect with the music products industry. People in all those categories will be able to register for badges and reserve hotel rooms starting September 30, 2015. Mark your calendar and plan ahead, so you’ll have all your information ready to reserve your room. As the promo proclaims, “The music begins at The NAMM Show — and for that reason, it attracts the world's most powerful buyers.”

The basics... NAMM completely takes-over the Anaheim Convention Center and all the meeting and convention spaces in the surrounding hotels. The Convention Center is located at 800 W Katella Av, Anaheim, CA 92802.

The daily schedules are:
√ Thursday, Jan 21, 10 am–6 pm
√ Friday, Jan 22, 10 am–6 pm
√ Saturday, Jan 23, 10 am–6 pm
√ Sunday, Jan 24, 10 am–5 pm √ Hall E and Level 2 open at 9:30 am

Information on the 2016 NAMM Show grows rather regularly at:

https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016

Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.

It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:

“Planning to host an event at the NAMM Show? This is just a friendly reminder that when creating and promoting your event during NAMM in and around Anaheim, there are a couple of rules to follow.

√ “Events taking place at an Anaheim venue are only approved for use by NAMM member companies.

√ “The use of the NAMM name, logo, and/or font in the title of your event is prohibited. The NAMM name may be used in your promotion only to reference that your event is occurring during the dates of NAMM show. This will ensure everybody is clear about who is producing the event. All NAMM produced events take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, Grand Plaza, and Hilton or Marriott. Other events are not official NAMM events and should not be promoted as such.

√ “If NAMM is mentioned anywhere in the promotion, please add “Event produced by XYZ company and NAMM has no affiliation with or liability for this event.”

8 pm JIM WHITE, with Red House Records recording artist CHARLIE PARR in support, plays McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497; www.mccabes.com

This L.A. show just added CHARLIE PARR on Friday, Sep 25. He's on tour for his latest album, "Stumpjumper."

Duluth, Minnesota cult hero Charlie Parr's latest album, "Stumpjumper," has been chosen as one of the best roots / folk albums of the summer by Rhapsody. His raw acoustic folk blues and blistering picking have brought him a following that crosses fans of all ages — his vivid narratives and hard luck protagonists reflect his working-class upbringing in rural Minnesota and his straight take on life.

Long a part of the vibrant Duluth, MN, music scene that prominently includes Alan Sparhawk and Low, and Trampled by Turtles, Charlie changed-it-up this time, traveling to rural North Carolina to record "Stumpjumper" with fellow musician Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger).

Charlie joined Cook and a cast of local players, setting up in an old outbuilding on the “Down Yonder Farm” in rural North Carolina. As well as being the first album Charlie has recorded outside of his native Minnesota, "Stumpjumper" is also his first full-band album.

Charlie grew up in the Hormel meatpacking city of Austin, MN (population 25,000) where most of the world's favorite tinned meat — yep, the legendary Spam — is still manufactured.

(Ironically, he doesn't eat meat.) The combination of growing up with both parents working proud union jobs in an industrial meat factory and his largely rural environment had a broad impact on Parr. That comes through in his songs, as well as being surrounded by music — his father's record collection (Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly) and his older sister's (Captain Beefheart, rock'n'roll). These days, he spends most of his time on the road, cooking his meals on his engine manifold on his way to his next gig.

# 18 HOT ALERT...

TIX ALERT: Sat, Oct 10, in L.A.:
7:30 pm JESSICA PRATT plays her "psychedelic folk" music for the "Saturday Nights at the Getty" series at the Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Dr, Los Angeles. (Appr'x 12 miles NW of downtown Los Angeles.)

Jessica Pratt is a singer-songwriter whose singular voice and transfixing, intimate performances are rooted in a California psychedelic folk tradition. However, the acoustic dream-pop meditations on her album "On Your Own Love Again" go beyond straightforward folk sounds, with a distinctly British perspective that evokes the high-pitched eccentricities of Kate Bush, the delicate pop melodies of early Marianne Faithfull, and the lingering introspection of Nick Drake.

While living in San Francisco, Pratt worked in relative obscurity, making bedroom recordings. She was discovered and championed by Tim Presley, the mastermind behind the excellent psychedelic rock outfit White Fence, who famously put up his entire life savings to release Pratt's first record. Its follow up, On Your Own Love Again, was released by the storied independent label Drag City, making her labelmates with figures like Bill Callahan, Joanna Newsom, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

Pratt's songwriting contains an intoxicating warmth and manages to take conventional pop hooks, interpreted with craft and humor, and push them into weird, otherworldly places. As NPR wrote, "With little more than a weary sigh, Pratt flips the banal into the magical; she makes listeners wonder about the circumstances she describes. There's more. You can feel it in the pauses, the implications, the breath."

Appearing on the heels of a national tour with indie luminaries Beach House, Jessica Pratt will perform in the architecturally striking Harold M. Williams Auditorium, a space distinctly receptive to quietly compelling and nuanced performances.

For thirty years, Lee Ranaldo was the lead guitarist of Sonic Youth, one of the most influential and artistically sophisticated alternative rock bands of the recent era. Since the band's end in 2011, Ranaldo has been exploring new roles as a solo performer, leader of his new band The Dust, and beyond, to interdisciplinary collaborations in alternative venues like cathedrals and museums, often with his partner Leah Singer. Their recent live performances have been large-scale, multi-projection quadraphonic sound and cinema events. From performing on an electric guitar suspended from the ceiling and swinging over the audience, to rediscovering his love of acoustic folk music, Ranaldo's experimentalist spirit connects with music lovers across the spectrum, from classic rock to avant-garde.

Mon, Oct 12, in Altadena:
8 pm Scotland’s TANNAHILL WEAVERS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake, Altadena. Reservations by phone only (10 am-10 pm, 7 days) at 626-798-6236.

Bob Stane hadn’t yet announced this show when we first published this. Jump on it before it sells-out.

The TANNAHILL WEAVERS are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better... yet continue to do just that.

Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate ROBERT TANNAHILL, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. Over the years “The Tannies” have been trailblazers for Scottish music, and their tight harmonies and powerful, inventive arrangements have won them fans from beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes – their versatile piper LORNE MacDOUGALL arranged and performed for for the 2012 Disney Pixar movie "Brave" under the leadership of PATRICK DOYLE, and for Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2." They are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage; from reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.

"An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." - New York Times.

“These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the states.” - Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion.

“…their great humour and superb musicianship make them one of the finest bands on the circuit.” - Rogue Folk Review.

“The music may be pure old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.” - Winnipeg Free Press.

Tue, Oct 13, in Tehachapi:
7 pm SARAH McQUAID plays Fiddler's Crossing, 206 East F St, Tehachapi 93561; 661-823-9994.

Fast on the heels of her “Cornwall Folk Festival” performance on the 29th of August, Sarah is flying to the US for a two-month, coast-to-coast, 36-show tour, then returning to Jolly Ol’ just in time to play the first of her 22 UK dates, starting October 30th.

We really like this artist. Her latest concept is based on thoughtful analysis of what’s happening to music and how that keeps everyone from hearing a complete record, as we all once did. In this digital era, “listening to a record” has become a near-nonexistent phenomenon; even CD purchases tend to go straight onto an iPod from which tracks will pop up at random. UK-based singer-songwriter SARAH McQUAID was keen to ensure that her fourth solo album, “Walking into White,” got at least a few full-length listens before being subsumed into playlists – so she’s performing the whole thing live, track by track, as the first half of each concert on her forthcoming September-October US tour.

“Sarah McQuaid has clearly held true to her own musical vision,” wrote Helen Gregory in Folk Radio UK, “and it’s to be hoped that ‘Walking into White’ is the album which will bring her the wider commercial success she so richly deserves.”

Belgian blogger Michel Preumont (concerts-review.over-blog.com) described it as “Original, acrobatique et audacieux ... Un album brillant ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives pour Sarah McQuaid.” (“Original, acrobatic and audacious ... A brilliant album that opens new perspectives for Sarah McQuaid”).

She’s quite literally playing the whole country this time around. Fortunately, we get several chances to see her in the Southern half of California:

CLOSES Sep 26, in Topanga:
“AS YOU LIKE IT” resets Shakespeare to the American Civil War, at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley.

Note, “the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more.”

In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

You seem to be recovering from that wreck because you're back in form and writing more than anybody can possibly read. Making us think while you baffle us with way too many choices for things to do and places to go hear live music. Take good care. We need you. Be careful out there.

You started off about The Pope and how America needs leaders that respect art. That is all well and good, but what we really need is leaders who have a sense of morality and a desire to serve The People like the example of The Pope has been showing them. And he's been showing us all, all week.

This Boehner guy that quit should have left a long time ago because he wanted the job but he didn't want to do anything with it.

The person who replaces him (hopefully a WOMAN!) should look to The Pope for serving The People because we're all tired of pompous asses and we need and want more people like The Pope.

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World.

(Here's the longest email-to-the-editor that we've gotten in quite some time. Thanks to the reader, who raises several points. — ed.)

You dont do enuff reviews so heres one. The print on the Tv kept saying GRAMMY AWARD WINNER ARETHA FRANKLIN SINGS AMAZING GRACE so I kept waiting for it. All she did was keep moaning for line after line as the organ player held keys down. Maybe yourr not sposed to critisize Aretha Franklin but it was just strange really.

Anyhoo I started this to tell you something then she came on stage. Its about where she sang and another thing. You always tell me & everybody about all these festivals we can go to and now ive been to a bunch i would have missed. But you missed 2 when you did all the festivals and in the Tv parts you wrote.

Aretha Franklin sang or really just moaned at the FESTIVAL OF FAMILIES thats still going on on differrnt channels. And only on msnbc is the other one called THE GLOBAL CITIZEN FESTIVAL.

The one in Philly is the family one and its really for greetings to the Pope. Too many people talking to him through the speakers must be boring him and the million people crowd but some music has been good like the pretty girl playing mando who had a guy with a good fiddle but her lyrics were lame.

The one in New York Central Park had a lot of music that i didnt like but the crowd did and it was free so what do you expect. That was about doing good things that make you and me & people there into Global Citizens and that is really a good idea. Joe Biden the vicepresidnt was there with his doctor who is his wife and he looks healthy so she must do a good job. He said really good things that were good breaks from boring music so im glad i saw that part. But why does everybody think Ed Sheeran or Coldplay are so good cause theyre not. But they were suporting the good message i guess even though i could have helped them find a lot better bands. All they had to do was look in your blog that you write.

So i am not like mad or anything that you left out those Tv festivals and i hope you keep telling eveeybody where to find all the really good music they should go see.
