A TEN STAGE FREE FESTIVAL wraps-up October... PLUS concerts & more, into November & beyond ... and THE GUIDE closes one door and opens another (Oct 28 edtn 2016)

LATE ADDITION...

Many artists have wondered about their psychological quirks. Often, it's those "quirks" that drive creativity! But it never hurts to learn about the peculiarities of other creative people. Of all places, C-SPAN is premiering a new show, addressing exactly that, on Saturday night (and it'll be archived on-demand, online, after that). Here's the info:

Sat, Oct 29, on C-SPAN2:
9:15 pm & 10:45 pm "ANDY WARHOL WAS A HOARDER" is presented by Claudia Kalb, former senior writer for Newsweek. She talks about the evolution of mental health using the stories of famous men and women like Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Howard Hughes, and Princess Diana.

Now, here's the complete edition as originally published.

Okay, here it is: THE FUTURE OF THE GUIDE HAS BEEN DETERMINED, and we thank everyone who voted to help us make the determination.

Huh? What determination? The question -- for more than a month -- was whether we would keep emphasizing our presentation of EVENTS, or whether we would return to being all about MUSIC NEWS. Because it's become clear we cannot do both.

The total of votes cast are a small fraction of the page counter tallies of the full readership. But those who voted determined what happens (at least around here), and we got something of a Brexit as a result.

Here's the count:
MUSIC NEWS: 762 votes
EVENTS/CALENDAR: 531 votes

We've got to admit, we are really, really, pleased and relieved at that outcome. (Not just because it's the only vote in the fall of 2016 with results we 'spect we'll like -- given that whatever way the national mockery of an excruciatingly unending election goes, is, in any case, a disgraceful travesty. "Lesser of two evils" is a choice? When you've got honest third party candidates? You've got to be kidding. Okay, we'll stop, and get back to the music.)

SO, GIVEN THE RESULTS

of the Guide's reader determination, THIS edition, right here, is our FINAL "events / calendar" focused edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. The timing is right: Saturday brings the end of the "Fall Festival Season," and the big music festivals don't resume 'til Spring. To make our swan song of calendar listings complete, it's also our FINAL edition of our "Music on TV" feature as a comprehensive catalog of performances on the flickering screen. And that part is appropriate, since THIS weekend truly warrants our extensive TV coverage. From Friday evening through the wee hours of Monday morning, this weekend's music-on-tv scene is as amazingly crowded as the go-see-it-live music scene.

So., here it is...

Use it. It's meant to get you out and listening, and/or guided around the channels. it's never been intended simply as a cyber-delivered gem to be savored. "Savored"-? Well, yeah! ...for what it tells you that you didn't previously know about musicians and bands or even about some mysterious series or venue. (Plenty of reader mail has let us know, for years, how you appreciate that.) Of course, it's also your last time to enjoy our longtime, "oh, by the way," informative write-ups for who those artists are, playing those concerts. Since, from here on out, that information will be in full-on NEWS FEATURE STORIES.

So, with thanks to you for your votes, it's bon voyage and fond farewell and off to the pasture for the Guide's editions dedicated to calendar-formatted EVENTS.

THE FUTURE...

From here forward, expect chockfull multi-section NEWS EDITIONS. Reviews, previews, whose in the studio, what innovative ideas are translating into exciting collaborations behind the mic or on the road, who's up for what award or got accolades from somebody famous, conferences, tech meetings, demonstrations that were so astonishing they blew people away, gear reports... and plenty more. And yes, around here, NEWS does include word on upcoming FESTIVALS and the occasional super-duper concert ,or nifty lil' concert in a park somewhere, or something we just don't want you to miss. Which brings this full-circle.

For the last time, we say, "We don't want you to miss anything this weekend. So here ya go."

3 & 7 pm Annual "SAMHAIN: THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN" musically brings the origins Halloween and Celtic Tales of the Supernatural through song, dance, and instrumental performance for just two performances on the same day, and welcomes KEN O'MALLEY as this year's narrator. Plus, this year's production moves to MacLeod Ale Brewing Co, 14741 Calvert St, Van Nuys 91411. The show is written, produced and directed by the multitalented Aedan MacDonnell of Celtic Rhythms, who is, among many other things in the arts community, a member of the Scottish Fiddlers. This year's show will be held in a Scottish brewery. Aedan tells us, "Enjoy a pint of freshly brewed ale as you listen to the stories, hear the music, and feel the breath of those long gone on the back of your neck. You're not too scared, are you? Good! Fear not, Alastair and Jenny of MacLeod Ale Brewing Co have promised to keep the ghoulies at bay so the music, dance and entertainment can commence." The Guide always strongly recommends this show. It's worthy of going on the road, and each year's fresh rendition gets only two performances. Tickets are now on sale. 8 pm Guitarist CHRIS PROCTOR performs in concern at the Pasadena Folk Music Society series at Caltech in Pasadena. Park free in either lot at the S end of Michigan Av, S off Del Mar. Fine American guitarist Chris Proctor plays in Beckman Institute Auditorium (aka "Little Beckman").
=
Chris, now living in Salt Lake City, is a great 6 and 12 string fingerstyle steel string guitarist. Chris's guitar playing encompasses a range of styles, including traditional American folk, Celtic, blues and classical, but his style and fluidity is all his own. He is a fine composer of his own tunes, and he captures a wide range of emotions in his music. He also finds new dimensions in familiar songs, written by others. A good example is his version of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song "Ohio," in which he tackles the anger and outrage of that song, which was a response to the student killings during the Vietnam War protest at Kent State University in 1970. Chris translates the raw emotion of the original and the event itself into an instrumental piece, not through loud, crashing volume, but with compelling tension that rivets the attention of the listener throughout the piece. With all eyes on his hands, he makes it seem so easy.
=
Oliver Di Place wrote about Chris, "When someone says of an instrumentalist that he is a musical storyteller, I usually roll my eyes. But Chris Proctor really is a storyteller with his music. He plays with a light touch, his fingers gliding across the strings. His melodies take the listener from a definite start to finish, with an interesting plot and wonderful characterization along the way. The melody is in the top string, with counter-melodies and harmonies in the rest of the strings. The rhythm comes from the song as a whole. It all falls into place beautifully.” Seeing Chris perform is quite a treat. His telling of anecdotes about the writing of tunes gives the listener just enough background to form some images which take on life while hearing the song. His guitar playing is extraordinary. Stay warm around the blazing bonfire while cowboy-singer MICHAEL TCHERKASSKY, “The Saddle Serenader”, croons the romantic poetry about life on the range that cattlemen composed by day during their journeys across the old west, and then shared around the campfire when the sun went down. Michael has performed traditional cowboy songs and poetry for many years at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival and other events around the country.
=
Featuring live acoustic music around a campfire, the museum, originally a 1930’s homestead, and its historic grounds, will be decorated in vintage holiday style. A chili cook-off, tours of the grounds, a country craft boutique, real cowboy coffee brewed over the fire, and hot chocolate or cider for the kids make for a nice evening. Explore the unique hand-built museum and whimsical grounds at night, with soft lighting and the smell of fresh greenery, and the wintery sky sparkling over the desert.
=
The country craft boutique features unique gift ideas, made by local artists. The crafters carry on the artistic tradition of Howard Arden Edwards, who built the Indian Museum to display his collection of American Indian artifacts. The Craftsman-style building is decorated with his colorful representations of Indian culture and creative hand-made furniture.
=
Rose Edwards was known for her tasty rib-sticking chili and cornbread feasts at their holiday celebrations. Try the chili cook-off entries and Rose’s original 1930 Christmas Chili recipe, complemented by delicious cornbread generously provided by The Lemon Leaf Café.

The Chili Cook-off is still open to competitor sign-ups, and vendors are still being accepted. Contact Jean Rhyne at 661-946-6900 or Jean.Rhyne@parks.ca.gov for information.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS -- and views of interest to artists everywhere -- more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
