ROZ LARMAN MEMORIAL IS MONDAY, APRIL 17th IN SOUTH PASADENA

Those who remember the late, great, ROZ LARMAN of radio's "FolkScene" on KPFK radio (90.7 FM) are invited to a birthday celebration and memorial for her, Roz passed-away October 10, 2016. That memorial is TONIGHT, Monday, April 17 on Roz's birthday!

It runs 7:30-9:30 pm, in the old Carnegie Library -- aka the South Pasadena Public Library, in its concert hall of a "community room" at 1115 El Centro St, South Pasadena, CA.

The public is invited, though seating is limited. Our friends at the Pasadena Folk Music Society (PFMS) add, "Join us in reflecting on the great effect Roz and her husband, Howard, had in introducing so many of us to the rich variety of folk music and her support of live venues such as our own. Roz and her late husband had a great effect on inspiring this series and introducing us to so many fine performers over the years."

"It would probably be a good idea to arrive a bit early, and parking is mostly on the surrounding streets. Contact Allen Larman if you have any questions -- 323-204-7072."

Our friends at PFMS also are diligent in saying, "FolkScene continues on Sunday nights with Roz's son, Allen, his wife, Kat Griffin, along with Peter Cutler and Deborah Hand-Cutler."

That's on KPFK 90.7 FM in Southern California, and globally at www.kpfk.org, 6-8 pm Pacific time every Sunday night.

Finally, the PFMS folks say, "You can hear Kat's interview with Rose Cousins, along with some good recordings from the Sunday show of a week ago in the KPFK Archives, at http://archive.kpfk.org."

It's the show from April 10th, 2017. The show airs with recorded performance-interviews, some quite recent, some from long ago from the archive with the late Howard Larman conduction the interview. It's an every-Sunday institution, 6-8 pm, unless pre-empted by a pledge drive. The PFMS peeps have a helpful note regarding the currently archived show: "The concert/interview begins about 45 minutes into the show. Especially don't miss the segment where she [Rose Cousins] switches to piano."

We'll say how great it is that someone's legacy carries on as conversation about current work that wouldn't be there without their decades of dedication.

___

Around here, we find ourselves remembering Howard and Roz Larman all the time.

Back in December, we wrote:

"The week Roz Larman died, sales of Americana Music exceeded sales in every other genre of recorded music with physical and cyber sales in America. Of huge significance, those Americana music sales figures did NOT include the week's total sales of Nashville-pop that has come to be identified as 'the' modern Country Music. It marked the first time, ever, that has happened, and it's a big reason for a lot of celebrations. We quietly saw that fact as a victory for Roz and her late husband Howard. It was the Larmans who had, for decades, kept the radio listening public aware of the vitality and continuing relevance of American Folk Music.

"Our brief exploration of perspective warrants a couple of additional points.

"Of course, you can start an argument if you attempt to define the overlapping spheres of 'Folk' and 'Americana.' A few years back, The Guide's editor got in multiple rounds of just such an argument, online and in print in another music journal — and that argument was with the Larman's. With their influence in mind, we have consistently maintained that there are countless arenas of 'folk' that properly belong in 'world music,' and those have precious little in common with 'Folk-Americana.' But combining those two words into a single term is too much of an unholy marriage for some dyed-in-the-wool 'folkies.' Those folks will not make room at the inn for certain kinds of Americana music, any more than they'll accept jazz as folk music. Even the traditional New Orleans Jazz, Dixieland Jazz, American-based Djangostyle and other traditional blues-jazz forms that we often cover. All that is just anathema to some Folk Music purists, and they, or others in the fold, reject honky-tonk music or anything played with a pedal steel guitar as being outside the bounds. Curiously, the Dobro is always okay. But some of the things done with the banjo? Those aren't. And there are emphatic opinions about all of it.

"This lil' dialog may already have gotten the hair up on somebody's back. So let's bring our perspective back to the string-based music that's less likely to foment argument.

"The US really does not have a 'Folk Chart' that matters. This country hasn't had one for decades. Even as the Canadian Juno Awards have expanded to recognize all that nation's genres and the artists who write and perform in them, the US-based GRAMMYS have expanded within pop, rap, and hip-hop categories and reduced or chosen to neglect many genres of music with deep roots is America.

"The 'Americana Music Chart' is thus doubly important — covering the absence of a meaningful American Folk Music chart, and operating as an important measure of music the GRAMMYS largely neglect. The chart isn't based on sales. It tracks radio stations — both terrestrial and internet — with entire full-time formats or individual shows dedicated to the Americana music genre. As Americana and Folk-Americana have a proven and growing acceptance, preference, and popularity, the chart clearly matters.

"The Guide has, for the past few years, brought you the Top 40 Americana Music Airplay Chart on an irregular basis. We've always thought it important to keep it in mind as a touchstone. Especially since the Los Angeles radio market has NO stations with a Folk-Americana format, and is almost devoid of individual Americana music shows.

"We hasten to add that comment is NOT intended as a slight to the few shows that the collective 'we' do have on broadcast airwaves in Southern California, or to the stalwarts that lovingly produce, choose the playlists, and host those shows. Indeed, those shows are of high quality and would do well in any other market where they would compete with established Americana / Folk-Americana music programming."

The festival's biggest stars generally do not perform at the daytime weekend main site, but there is plenty of continuous live cowboy / western / western swing music on multiple stages. Parking isn't a problem, since it's free at a huge remote lot off Newhall Ave (there are signs) with a fleet of free shuttle buses.

✔ NOTE 2: The 37th annual "Book Prizes" are Friday night in USC's Bovard Auditorium. Get those tix at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/37th-annual-los-angeles-times-book-prizes-tickets-tickets-32606717570 ; everything else happens Sat & Sun.
✔ THE SCENE: This is so much more than books. There are 211 sessions with speakers, mostly authors, and a dozen featured music performances. The number of exhibitors in booths, many with programs and public presentations, is far more than we wanted to count. Because no one thinks "arts and music festival" when you tell them, "It's a book fair," we see the need to change that opinion. So it's getting, by far, the longest description of any festival in this Guide. Uniquely among all our featured write-ups, that monumental list of our recommended picks follows just after the music performance lineup.
✔ 2017 LINEUP:

But the community of artists in Topanga Canyon is placing their emphasis on the annual "Topanga Days Country Faire," the only Southern Cal music festival that runs all three days of Memorial Day Weekend (see that listing).

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music.
