Late breaking news... Monday night, May 22nd...

EXPLOSION STRIKES CONCERT IN ENGLAND

Just at press time, we are learning about the attack on a nighttime concert crowd at the Manchester Arena in England. It is both a sports facility and Europe's largest indoor music venue. Just after the concert by American singer Ariana Grande ended, all those in the arena heard a boom. Some presumed it was a large balloon filled with hydrogen or some other explosive gas. It wasn't. It was a bomb. Some of those close to the explosion panicked. Over 20 are dead, and more than 50 were injured. We do not yet know how many were killed or wounded by the explosion and how many may have been injured or killed in the panicked stampede as too many tried to use the exit tunnels, too fast. Our thoughts are with the victims.

Without doubt, this will cause more stringent security at this weekend's music festivals in the US, as it will throughout the world. We encourage you to arrive early and be patient with whatever search protocols will be used where you're going. Check festival and venue websites before you leave — something that was okay to take with you last year may not be allowed in the gates this year. Even though the weather will be warm, think of taking a light jacket or sweater to save your spot, rather than the little backpack you usually take. Anything that seems suspicious can ruin everyone's good time. Be careful out there. Along with the adage, "If you see something, say something," we encourage one more thing: be mindful of the needs of others who are also there to have a good time.

"CINE GEAR EXPO L.A. 2017" IS JUNE 1-4: FREE REGISTRATION THROUGH MAY 27

The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood are the host site for "Cine Gear Expo L.A. 2017," running June 1 through 4. Registration to attend is FREE through May 27, 2017.

This conference / expo is all about "enhancing your entire workflow from the camera to final delivery."

You'll be able to discover how new 16-bit codecs, ultra-fast ingest, cloud-based production and content management tools are fundamentally changing film and video workflows and lowering production costs. One exhibitor tells us, "As stand-alone solutions, each is engineered for excellence. Together they form a production environment of unsurpassed efficiencies."

Sony, a major exhibitor, says, "Get a first-hand look at these new workflow technologies and other Sony highlights at Cine Gear, including our 35mm 960fps HFR camera system, High Dynamic Range displays, and motion picture cameras."

There's plenty for slated for the event. Sony is presenting "Next-Gen Workflow Tools" that include their "Ci Media Cloud Platform, Media Backbone NavigatorX, and Optical Disc Archive Generation 2.

On Thursday, June 1, events are centered on the "FILM COMPETITION FINALIST SCREENINGS" in the Sherry Lansing Theater, Noon-5:30 pm. Other screenings are featured Friday and Saturday, as well.

The GEAR EXHIBITION and premiere SEMINARS take emphasis on Friday, June 2, Noon to 8 pm, and Saturday, June 3, 10 am to 5 pm.

Exhibits are open Friday, Noon-8 pm, and Saturday, 10 am- 5 pm.

Master Classes happen Sunday, June 4.

There are additional evening events, including one of particular note since the big "Amgen Tour of California" bike race concluded this past weekend in Pasadena.

FILM SCREENING, Friday, June 2nd, 7-10 pm at the Paramount Theater in Hollywood. The film is the new documentary, "LE RIDE," with special guest PHIL KEOGHAN from TV's "The Amazing Race." After his introduction, "Le Ride" is about the first English-speaking team to race bicycles in what many say is the toughest sporting event on earth, the "Tour de France." Consistent with the gear theme, at that event, there will be "an exclusive new technology announcement" before the screening.

We suggest you begin your Cine Gear experience by dropping-by Sony's exhibit at S129. You'll want to peruse their offerings of in-depth seminars and screenings as you decide which ones you'd like to attend amongst the array offered by all the exhibitors. For a sneak preview, check the Cine Gear website for times and locations even before you hit the exhibitor booths. Things are being added, so monitor the site if you're going.

Friday recommendation

You'll want to prioritize by making the rounds to get a grasp on all that you can before something happens without you knowing in time.

✔ One of the wonky gearhead offerings on Friday is "Demystifying Log vs. Linear, the power of 16-bit, and High Dynamic Range." In it, acclaimed instructor and DoP ALISTER CHAPMAN will separate the myths from the realities of a 16-bit workflow. It'll also include partic'lars on how far technology has come in a short time, specifically covering unique features of the F55 and R7 recorder, such as 4K recording at 120fps.

Saturday offerings at Cine Gear

It's a big day, and opportunities include:

✔ "Today's Ultimate Run & Gun Cameras," a discussion with "Media Stranger" about Sony's FS5 & FS7. Sony promo says, "'Media Stranger' discusses why FS5 & FS7 are the ultimate run'n'gun cameras and how they have become their productions most reliable workhorses."

✔ "Documentary Cinematography: Challenges and Solutions from VICE." Using FS series camcorders, special guests from VICE, Jerry Ricciotti, Director of Photography VICE media, and Zach Caldwell, associate DoP "VICE News Tonight" will "explore the challenges VICE production teams face, and the solutions VICE has employed for creating a stylistic look across multiple shows."

✔ "From the Script to the Big Screen: The Making of a Feature Film." Join writers/directors Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms and Director of Photography Johnny Derango as they discuss their latest film, "Small Town Crime." They'll discuss their approach to movie-making, use of different creative and cinematography techniques plus the lessons learned in taking a film from script to screen.

✔ "Establishing a look from Full Frame Motion Picture Production." You can join executive producer Glenn Gainor, director Diedrik Van Rooiijen, and Vantage Film GmbH's Alexander Schwarzand and Wolfgang Baumler for 'a lively discussion of the creative process employed in the upcoming Screen Gems feature film, 'Cadaver,' in using pioneering new technologies to realize a high-budget production aesthetic at moderate costs."

✔ "Content Management and Archiving Workflow Challenges Solved by EMBASSY ROW." It's a discussion by Embassy Row on how their producers can quickly search and retrieve content, often within two hours of a live show, and how they are migrating from a huge library of hard drives and spinning archive tape to a fully digital, simple and immediate workflow. This session will feature a live workflow demonstration of the content and workflow management system employed at Embassy Row, and will separately feature a look at Sony's Ci Media Cloud Platform.

Speaking of Sony's extensive product line, you can explore Sony Professional's new mobile app, "Pro USA by Sony." The new app is a resource for users and fans of that company's professional technologies and includes product information, solutions and pricing, as well as the ability to explore tradeshows. Download it at www.sony.com/ProUSA.

Of course, you'll find plenty more info and opportunities to get up-close and personal with gear, plus more apps from many manufacturers and dealers to load into your devices at the event. But the real reason to actually GO someplace is to fully experience and interact with product demos, ask questions, and get the hands-on touch-feel-see-and-hear of competing systems.

Remember , you can get your "Cine Gear Expo" pass, FREE, only through May 27. Thereafter, a $30 cash admission fee will apply to all new registrants.

✔ FREE REGISTRATION (which gets you a NAMM-type badge) is at:

FREE, JUNE 1st, ABOARD QUEEN MARY – MUSIC; WWII VETS SALUTE; AIR SHOW

(Long Beach, CA, May 22, 2017) – The elegant Queen Mary served as a troopship during World War II. She continues a lifetime of public service just after Memorial Day with an impressive salute to those of the Greatest Generation who served with her in WWII.

And after 3 pm that day, it's FREE.

This is a well-crafted event. Guests can enjoy the popular tunes of the '30s and '40s brought to life by swing dancers and vocalists performing on the Verandah Deck.

A highlight of the day's events will be a vintage "Warbird" flyover and aerial maneuvering demonstration above the ship.

The June 1st "WWII Salute" serves as a timely reminder of a crucially significant period in history and those who lived it. With the nickname "Grey Ghost" for her wartime camouflage paint, the Queen Mary safely ferried over 800,000 Allied personnel to war fronts around the globe and then home again after the powerful military forces of fascist dictators were defeated.

Throughout the war, Nazi U-boat commanders desperately sought to collect the bounty placed on the Queen Mary; none came close.

This year's Memorial Day program — fortunately held a few days late and therefore not conflicting with all the music festivals — is part of the Queen Mary’s ongoing "Community Service Salon Series."

Joining war re-enactors and others on the ship that day will be "War Dog," a restored WWII airplane. Built by North American Aviation for the Army Air Force as the AT-6, and for Naval and Marine Corps pilots as the SNJ, the plane was the most important air combat trainer of the war. This one, magnificently restored, is now piloted by longtime aviator John Collver. His plane will perform its combat ballet at 5:30 pm, just a few hundred feet above the Queen Mary's decks. At over 200 mph, the sound of a warbird passing hard and fast overhead is one for the memory book, something to hear and feel that no "virtual" experience can touch.

The Queen’s Salon, where Bob Hope once debuted his wartime comedy routines, will host WWII re-enactors, present historic memorabilia displays, and host video screenings of the Queen Mary's wartime service and those who sailed aboard her. Guests can interact with "The California Historical Group" as they roam the ship outfitted in WWII uniforms.

Admission to the ship and WWII Salute is FREE after 3 pm on June 1.

Queen’s Salon activities run 3 pm-8 pm. Musical acts perform from 3:30 pm-7:30 pm. The air show, which is best watched from the unique perspective of the ship's decks, happens at 5:30 pm.

A cash bar and food concessions will be available, with libations and victuals for purchase on the Promenade Deck.

The "Glory Days Tour" and new "4D Theater Movie" are optional, and will be $5.

If you drive there, parking for the event is $10 after 3 pm. Or use public transit. Look for the red-and-white "Passport" bus signs at the stations on the end loop of the Metro Blue Line light rail. Passport is a free ride, it runs a loop route, and that includes a stop at the Queen Mary.

More details at:

https://www.queenmary.com/events/monthly-ship-events/
___

Located in the Port of Long Beach, the Queen Mary features a rich maritime history, authentic Art Deco décor, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Long Beach city skyline. At the time of her maiden voyage in May of 1936, she was considered the grandest ocean liner ever built. The Queen Mary features award-winning restaurants, historical attractions, numerous special event salons and 346 staterooms.

Not only is she bigger than the Titanic, but she's still afloat!

There's plenty more at:

There's also some cool stuff on YouTube about the history, visitor experience, and past events aboard the Queen Mary:

Artificial Intelligence is already having a profound impact on our personal and working lives–and its impact will only increase in the future.

More specifically, how will advanced manufacturing and machine learning affect our workforce in LA County? Will robots replace jobs, or complement and enhance existing roles in the various industries in the LA region? How will the benefits offered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI present opportunities for industries including airlines, manufacturing, smart buildings, smart homes, and oil and power?" Those questions and more will be addressed by an impressive lineup of speakers.

GRAMMY MUSEUM, GRAMMY FOUNDATION JOIN FORCES FOR EDUCATION

Two organizations merge into the GRAMMY Museum Foundation to become the leading educational institution dedicated to broadening the historical and cultural significance of music

The GRAMMY Museum and GRAMMY Foundation have announced that the two organizations will merge into the newly expanded GRAMMY Museum Foundation, which will offer the best of each organization's initiatives in preservation, education, exhibitions, and public programming. The integrated organization will become the leading educational institution dedicated to broadening the historical and cultural significance of music.

Additionally, the GRAMMY Museum has expanded its executive team, including the appointment of Scott Goldman as Executive Director. Previously Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, Goldman will oversee the Museum's development, programming, curatorial services, and strategic planning. Bob Santelli, the Museum's original and previous Executive Director, will transition into the newly created position of Founding Executive Director, focusing on the pursuit of domestic and international market expansions, development of business alliances and strategies, and opportunities for further growth and evolution of the GRAMMY Museum and its missions.

"Both the GRAMMY Museum and GRAMMY Foundation have done such truly remarkable work as individual organizations that we started to think about what we could achieve together," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. "This integration will allow us to combine our resources and the expertise of our dedicated staffs to increase the impact of our shared vision: to cultivate a greater understanding of the history and cultural significance of music, inspire its appreciation and advance its future."

"By bringing together these two organizations that have already made a lasting impact as individual entities, we stand to achieve tremendous gains as well as scale our efforts," said Goldman. "I'm thrilled to lead the newly expanded GRAMMY Museum and look forward to bringing more resources and scale to our programs as we continue to use music as a gateway to learning."

"For 10 years, I have had the unique and exciting opportunity to run what began as a one-of-a-kind 21st century Museum," said Bob Santelli. "Together with my stellar staff, we've created interactive exhibits that have traveled the country and the world. And now, with footprints in the south via GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and our GRAMMY Museum Gallery at Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville along with our recently announced projects in New Jersey and China, I couldn't be more excited to continue the expansion of the GRAMMY Museum brand."

In 2017 the newly expanded GRAMMY Museum plans to broaden and strengthen its programs by including those previously included under the GRAMMY Foundation umbrella. Moving forward, the Museum will place a stronger emphasis on growing its education and curriculum-based initiatives in an effort to make music education accessible to students nationwide.

In a newly announced development, the GRAMMY Museum and GRAMMY Foundation are joining forces to offer the best of each organization's initiatives in preservation, education, exhibitions, and public programming. The resulting new GRAMMY Museum Foundation will look to become the leading educational institution dedicated to broadening the historical and cultural significance of music through their combined efforts.

Together in 2016, the GRAMMY Museum and GRAMMY Foundation served nearly 100,000 students through local and national education initiatives. To demonstrate their collective potential, here is a look back at four ways each organization previously raised the flag for music education.

The Museum has curated more than 60 exhibits since opening in 2008, including more than 20 that have toured other cultural institutions around the world. For example, Swifties can take a behind-the-scenes look at their favorite artist with "The Taylor Swift Experience" exhibit, which is currently at GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. Or if you're a hardcore guitar head, the "Shining Like A National Guitar" exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum might be more your speed.

In its bid to present the "most dynamic and exciting educational programs," the Museum has hosted more than 650 public programs, featuring artist interviews, live performances, film screenings, lectures, and continuing education classes. Upcoming classes cover topics such as networking, pop lyric songwriting and the music of the Civil War.

Since 2014, the GRAMMY Museum's Jane Ortner Education Award luncheon has honored both an artist and Southern California educator each year. The Artist Award celebrates a performer who has demonstrated passion and dedication to education through the arts, while the Education Award recognizes educators who incorporate music into teaching academic subjects such as the language arts, history, math, and science. Lady Gaga was the 2016 Artist Award recipient.

The Museum has offered a variety of tour options for schools to maximize the educational potential for attending students. Teachers can take their class on a self-guided tour through the Museum's cutting-edge immersive exhibits or schedule an educational workshop along with their visit, resulting in a one-of-a-kind learning experience.

In 2016 the GRAMMY Foundation provided 20 grants, totaling $300,000, to facilitate a wide range of research, archiving and preservation projects. Each year, grants have been issued to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound, and research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition.

For more than 10 years, the Foundation hosted a variety of GRAMMY Camps, including residential and daytime summer programs, which allowed talented high school students to deepen their musical skills. GRAMMY campers receive unprecedented access to professional music creators and participate in once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunities. GRAMMY Camp — Jazz session has brought select students to GRAMMY Week for a series of high-profile performances and an album recording session.

GRAMMY Signature Schools provided awards and monetary grants to public high school music programs based upon need as well as top public high school music programs. Since 2010, the Foundation awarded more than $1 million in cash grants to more than 600 schools around the country. Some recipient schools have even leveraged their grants into additional funding for their music education programs.

The Music Educator Award, established in 2013 as a joint presentation by the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy, honors outstanding full-time music educators who teach kindergarten through college in public and private schools. The winner and top Music Educator Award finalists are presented with a monetary award plus a trip to the annual GRAMMY Awards. Each of their schools also receive matching grants. Southern California native Keith Hancock was named the 2017 recipient.

GRAMMY Museum awards $200,000 in music grants

In May, fourteen recipients, including Berklee College of Music, Yale University and "Living Blues" magazine, were aided by the Museum to support archiving and preservation efforts of the recorded sound heritage of the Americas.

The GRAMMY Museum Grant Program has awarded more than $200,000 in grants to 14 recipients in the United States to help facilitate research on a variety of music-based subjects, as well as support a number of archiving and preservation programs.

Funded by The Recording Academy, the Grant Program provides funding annually to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the recorded sound heritage of the Americas for future generations, in addition to research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition.

With a $20,000 grant, the Yale University Library will preserve and digitize approximately 335 hours of unique noncommercial audio, predominantly from 1937–1956, featuring music by Charles Ives. The content will be ingested into the library's digital preservation system and made available via one of its mediated streaming tools.

Berklee College of Music in Boston will receive $13,000 to digitize an impressive collection of analog video tapes spanning 1985–2001, which capture music legends imparting their wisdom in memorable commencement speeches and unique performances.

Living Blues magazine co-founder Jim O'Neal was awarded $5,000, which will be used to catalog and assess a historic collection of more than 2,000 tapes of interviews and live music. These one-of-a-kind tapes, which date from 1968 to 2012, document many major figures in blues, R&B, gospel, and jazz from Chicago, Mississippi, Memphis, and elsewhere.

The Memphis, Tenn.-based Soulsville Foundation will receive $13,000 to support an effort to digitize, preserve and share a collection of more than 250 concert and promotional posters, advertisements and album artwork proofs highlighting the rich history of Stax Records from 1957–1975.

Awarded $5,000, T. Christopher Alpin in Pasadena, Calif., will evaluate and preserve the sound collections of the Fort Sill Chiricahua/Warm Springs Apache tribe. Collections contain the musical heritage of the Chihene, or Warm Springs Apache youth impressed into Nednai camps in the Mexican Sierra Madres between 1882 and 1883.

Iowa State University Foundation was awarded more than $19,000 for a scientific research grant that will examine the acute and long-term effects of therapeutic singing on both the motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including depression, stress and inflammation.

To date, the Grant Program has awarded more than $7 million to nearly 400 initiatives that explore the intersection of music and science for the benefit of the general public.

"The compelling and far-reaching endeavors represented by our 2017 grantees reflect a commitment to issues that The Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum members are passionate about: our goal to recognize and sustain the value of music in all of our lives," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and Chair of the GRAMMY Museum Board.

You can see the complete list of all the "MUSIC RESEARCH AND SOUND PRESERVATION" grant recipients in the news feature following this one.

GRAMMY MUSEUM® GRANT PROGRAM AWARDS $200,000 FOR MUSIC RESEARCH AND SOUND PRESERVATION

Funds provide support for Archiving and Preservation Programs and Research Efforts that Examine the Impact of Music on Human Development

The GRAMMY Museum® Grant Program announced May 8th that more than $200,000 in grants will be awarded to 14 recipients in the United States to help facilitate a range of research on a variety of subjects, as well as support a number of archiving and preservation programs. Research projects include a study that will investigate the effects of group singing therapy on people with Parkinson's disease, a study that examines the effects of household sounds on infants and their development, and more. Preservation and archiving initiatives will evaluate the sound collections of the Fort Sill Chiricahua/Warm Springs Apache tribe, digitize traditional Yiddish folk recordings, preserve carillon music, and more. The deadline each year for submitting letters of inquiry is Oct. 1. Guidelines and the letter of inquiry form for the 2017 cycle are available at www.grammymuseum.org.

"The Recording Academy® is proud to support our GRAMMY Museum Grant Program and its important work," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and Chair of the GRAMMY Museum Board. "To date, we have awarded more than $7 million to nearly 400 initiatives that explore the intersection of music and science for the benefit of the general public, and safeguard our musical heritage for present and future generations. The compelling and far-reaching endeavors represented by our 2017 grantees reflect a commitment to issues that Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum members are passionate about: our goal to recognize and sustain the value of music in all of our lives."

Generously funded by The Recording Academy, the Grant Program provides funding annually to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the recorded sound heritage of the Americas for future generations, in addition to research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition. In 2008 the Grant Program expanded its categories to include assistance grants for individuals and small to mid-sized organizations to aid collections held by individuals and organizations that may not have access to the expertise needed to create a preservation plan. The assistance planning process, which may include inventorying and stabilizing a collection, articulates the steps to be taken to ultimately archive recorded sound materials for future generations.

An individual differences approach will be used to assess the degree to which music and speech share neural resources. Participants will be identified as lyric- or melody-focused, and scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging while listening to sung melodies. Differences in neural activation between groups will show where and how the speech and music networks are shared, and guide the development of music therapy for language disorders.

Sounds are a rich source of information available to infants. A current unmet need is to know which kinds of music, language, and other sound patterns in infancy set young learners on a path to social, linguistic, and academic success. Researchers at the University of Oregon will capture the many sounds in infants' everyday lives and characterize their quantity, quality, and stability. This research has potential to guide evidence-based policy about "sound diets"—from rhythms to tunes to words—that best support infants' development.

MUSICAL MEMORIAL FOR DUANE THORIN IS MAY 27

DUANE THORIN left the planet on March 29th, 2017. He was a stunningly fine musician, a bright presence with a brilliant mind, and a wonderful friend to the music community and all who were privileged to know him. Duane was a personal friend whose absence is a void felt by many, and whose frequent communications are missed daily around this windblown adobe.

Whether you knew him from his solo performances with his six or twelve string guitars, or in his operatic "CHEF DUANIO" character, or as the performer-arranger half of the acclaimed duo, THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS, you know what an amazing talent he was.

His musical memorial is set for the world-famous venue where he once booked many of the acts:

The Ice House, 24 N Mentor Av, Pasadena, CA 91106. It happens May 27, from 1-5 pm.

Duane spent many happy and invigorating times there, on stage, backstage and in the office doing all the things a producer and booker must do. Plus, the venue seats many more people than his usual music haunt up the hill, the Coffee Gallery Backstage.

There is a city parking structure on Mentor Av, across from the Ice House, or it's walkable from the Lake Avenue station of the Gold Line light rail.

DONNA BARNES-ROBERTS is producing the afternoon event. She says, "If you have any questions, or contributions of photos, stories, videos, or complete fabrications, please send me an email as I am compiling these bits for the memorial and beyond."

Donna refers to herself as "your humble servant in Duanio-Land."

There are some opportunities for additional musicians to perform. Especially if you ever shared a stage with Duane. Don't be bashful, and remember, having a part is the best way to get through something when you're grieving.

Contact Donna at:

or by phone at 626-344-3488.
