Groundhog Day Record Sale, and LIVE MUSIC / EVENTS UPDATE. Feb 2 2018 edition

.
.
Two big things for ya, this go 'round:

* First, the word of a 24-hour, 25%-off record / artists merch sale.

* Second, your Guide to LIVE MUSIC & Arts Events in Southern Cal, hugely expanded from the one we published in the last edition.

Let's get started!

+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

LATE ADDITION: the PUPPY BOWL

We really could care less about the overhyped football game with the FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR TICKETS to watch millionaire players get their brains damaged by taking cranial impacts for their billionaire owners. All being broadcast Sunday from inside a warm megadome to escape the frozen tundra, where REAL football games used to get played in the days of Lombardi.

BUT, we are newly-minted fans of THE PUPPY BOWL, which airs live, noon-1 pm Sunday (with constant repeats, into the night.) It's on the Animal Planet channel. In addition to all the canine players being rescued dogs who always get adopted into new homes by the end of the game? This year, Puppy Bowl XIV / The Dog Bowl, has: a rescued tree sloth assisting the ref; a chicken who pecks the piano keys during the National Anthem and any musical interludes; and an audience of quacking baby ducklings. Oh, and there's a large bird that walks around on the computer keyboard to tweet "live comments" on the game -- meaning you're getting tweeters along with your woofers.

This charming contest is played in a dogbone-shaped stadium, appropriately sized for participants' dimensions and puppy prowess. Anytime a "player" gets a plush toy into either end zone, that fido's team scores. And there is frequent action as jaws clamp down on the toys, with entire flocks of puppies pulling in different directions. Time-outs are taken when an un-housebroken participant fouls the playing field and the groundskeeping crew is called. And penalties include Intentional Growling, though licking the ref is allowed.

At one hour, and no overhyped two-million-dollar-a-minute commercials -- and enough time for just one beer and some good bean-cheese-salsa dip? They can collar us into watching this one.

♪ 24-HOUR, 25%-OFF, GROUNDHOG DAY RECORD SALE

Hillsborough, NC-based Yep Roc Records has quite a roster of music-makers on their label. We're not sure if they're having a secret sale because Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today. All of us DO know that the scene in Pennsylvania -- where they dragged the poor marmot from his burrow, with the sun shining at the time -- means we're supposed to be in for six more weeks of winter. Let's face it, with temps in the high 80's in L.A., it's a hard sell to get anybody to believe there even IS a winter anymore. And it's downright funny when the label tells us they're motivated to do something "to help get rid of those winter blues!"

Yes, well, it's A REAL GOOD THING, as a Twilight Zone episode once had all the characters saying. Soooooo, Yep Rock, for one day only, is offering "25% off artist items titled A-M from the y-store." Which is almost a cryptic way to tell us.

Seriously, the Yep Rock Records sale is 24 HOURS ONLY. So make your purchases on their site before 11 AM Saturday, Feb 3.

Their artists include DOC WATSON, AOIFE O'DONOVAN, JOHN DOE, CHATHAM COUNTY LINE, DAVE ALVIN & PHIL ALVIN, ELENI MANDELL, JOSH ROUSE, BORN RUFFIANS, GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS, MANDOLIN ORANGE, BIG SANDY, LOS STRAITJACKETS, THE APPLES, NICK LOWE, ROBYN HITCHCOCK, WESLEY STACE, CHUCK PROPHET, THE SADIES, TIFT MERRITT, SHADOWY MEN OF A SHADOWY PLANET, THE STRAY BIDS, THE FLESHTONES, JEREMY AND THE HARLEQUINS, JONAH TOLCHIN, TONY JOE WHITE, ELI PAPERBOY REED, SAM PHILLIPS, SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, KIM RICHEY, VAN DYKE PARKS, SLOAN, LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III, and more.

Their recordings and artist merch, and the 25% off sale, are at:

http://yeproc.11spot.com/

Use code "GOBBLERSKNOB" at checkout to get the big discount.
____

Of course, we are, as always, major proponents of patronizing local record stores. But once in a while, we can fall off the wagon for something good. Especially when we're filled with the holiday spirit of Groundhog Day.

Using data of millions of Americans acquired from banks, credit companies, Facebook, Google, social security and more, another Mercer company, Cambridge Analytica, used tactics honed during the UK's Brexit campaign to identify voters deemed 'most neurotic or worried,' whom they believed could swing for Trump. In the days before the election, using a little-known Facebook feature, 'dark posts,' they deployed highly manipulative and personalized messages, which could be seen only by the user before disappearing. In the darkness of the web, democracy was trumped by data."

Sat, Feb 3:
7 pm "THE BEST OF THE ROADHOUSE SET TWO - AFTER THE FLOOD" really does deserve that dramatic name, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Altadena, CA; phone for reservations, (10 am-10 pm, 7 days), 626-798-6236.
* YES, THERE REALLY WAS A FLOOD AT THE VENUE, WITH AN AUDIENCE IN THE SEATS AND PERFORMERS ON THE STAGE. But the vessel has been re-floated.
* It was a night of history. On January 11th 2018, as the water came flooding into The Coffee Gallery Backstage, some of the finest artists in L.A. were on stage performing great American roots music for the 1st Anniversary show of "The Roadhouse Series." Little did anyone known, a busted water line on the avenue outside had caused water to rushed into the venue. As the first historic set was coming to an end and we drank the last of the musical waters, our Big Kahuna, Bob Stane, took to his canoe and, megaphone in hand, called out for evacuation, while the fire department broke down the doors. As a performer, writer, photographer, bestselling author, and songwriter, Paul Zollo described it on his Facebook page.
* Zollo wrote: "With Neil Rosengarden in the spirit of those valiant Titanic musicians, we would play till the end. We heard Bob Stane telling everyone to 'please evacuate now before you get electrocuted!' I yelled, in mid-song, 'Save yourself!' Something I so rarely say during a song. I loved how Neil Rosengarden - although we were going down with the ship quickly - played so beautifully! And he played the very last notes of the song “Whispering Hope” by The Band - as Bob Stane urged us to ‘STOP ALREADY!’"
* This was at the end of the first half of Terry Paul Roland's "Best of the Roadhouse" series, leaving Roland to say, "It was half of one of the best shows ever!"
* In the spirit of Americana determination and our ability to overcome articles, we will present 'The Best of The Roadhouse - Set Two: After the Flood.' Included in the festivities will be our fearless Captain Roberto Stane, to guide through the perilous waters of The Coffee Gallery Backstage as artists like our faithful host Patrick Carrico, Chad Watson, the Titanic Legends-Paul Zollo & Neil Rosengarden, Pam Loe, RJ Chesney, Emily Zuzik, Levi Petree, Kassidy Heal, Robbie Mangiardi, Eddie Hedges, and Dwight Payne re-group with life boats and great songs to bring us to shore with the second set of this historic show. Also along for the voyage will be other artists from the first set and those who were ill and escaped the perils of the January 11th Day of the Flood show.
* This is a full show with $10.00 discount coupons "for the survivors of the first set. Proceeds will go toward the fearless band and the water-logged venue via our Captain," say the producers.
* Venue impresario Bob Stane, in his inimitable style, says, "Just as a precaution, you may want to bring your swim suit!"
* Tix, if you were not there for the flood, are $20; those who boarded the lifeboats get $10 tix.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
