Wonderment, NAMM, the Concert Scene, Special Screenings, and More. Jan 19 2019 edition

.
.
Here's an UPDATE of events, on into February. It covers this weekend, the coming week, and onward.

The annual overwhelmingly huge NAMM SHOW happens in Anaheim this coming week, and as always, the Guide will bring you reports to know what you're missing if you're not attending -- and to help everyone there to find exciting things they might otherwise miss in the maelstrom.

Of course, the CONCERT and FESTIVAL and ARTS SCENES all race onward, no matter what. So we cover upcoming wonderfullness for you in time for ya to get tickets.
___

First, we offer our editorial solution to the current agonizingly deplorable situation of vacuous leadership and hard-working folks who can't quit to take other jobs, and can't get paid for the jobs they have.

Ending Shutdowns: A real government must follow the basis of its authority

by Lawrence Wines

The supreme authority in this country is not the president. Neither is it the congress. Nor is it anyone in the congress, nor any other person who holds any office, elective or appointive. The supreme authority for governance in the United States is the U.S. Constitution -- except when the Supreme Court messes with it, as they did in their uniquely singular "not-a-precedent-that-can-be-cited" ruling that awarded the 2000 election to Dubya and his cabal.

Such 5-4 derailments in the ditch aside, the rule of law derives from the Constitution, and it requires references and citations that go directly to specific points in the articles or amendments to that Constitution.

Subsequently, any time Constitutional authority cannot be cited, it is an aberration that is clearly outside the way "we, the people," do things in our republic / representative form of democracy. (And that's where the Constitutional role of the Supreme Court is supposed to come-in.)

Now, when it comes to understanding a damn thing about the Constitution, most people prove to be painfully inept even at identifying the Bill of Rights as the first ten amendments to the Constitution. And any amendments beyond those are just terra incognita for the average social-media-addicted, ear-bud-wearing, self-absorbed boob.

Reading the Constitution would provide a revealing experience to most Americans. Like the fact that the first thing it does, after its Preamble, is establish Congress in its Article One. It goes on, in Section Seven of that Article, to require that all revenue legislation originate in the House of Representatives, and in that same Section Seven, it gives authority to Congress to pass anything into law over a presidential veto. In Section Nine of that same first Article, we get the "Emoluments clause" that fuels entirely too many hours of talking heads on cable news, and we also get this, as a required responsibility attendant to Congress' power-of-the-purse:

"No money shall be drawn from the treasury, but in consequence of appropriations made by law; and a regular statement and account of receipts and expenditures of all public money shall be published from time to time."

Which tells us that neither a President, nor any any other individual, can decide to divert money from its approved purpose and use it for something entirely different. Like, taking money from disaster relief funds and using it to build a wall. (It also tells us that all these secret "black budgets" that fund secret wars with unknown sums of publicly unaccountable public monies are unconstitutional, but that's another conversation.)

It -- the Constitution -- doesn't get around to establishing the office of, and limiting the power of, the President, until Article Two.

The Constitution is flagrantly violated when Congress refuses to pass a comprehensive budget for funding and running the federal government, and instead passes an endless series of stop-gap "continuing resolutions" -- CR's -- to keep things going like a kid getting an allowance. In fact, the ONLY reason a government shutdown EVER happens is when "politics" delays passage of a "CR" to fund the government for an eyeblink -- until it's time for the next "CR." So there really is plenty of blame to go around for the current debacle and the excruciatingly unjustifiable pain being inflicted on hard working individuals and families because people are being forced to work without pay.

But the solution does not lie with the talking heads or the lying politicians. It resides in forcing our government to follow the basis of both its authority and its responsibility -- the United States Constitution.

So we should unplug all the chargers and the Twitter feed and the painfully uninformed bloviators of breathlessly newsless social media long enough to do just one thing: we should all be focusing on the authority our government legitimately receives from "we, the people," with particular focus on the 13th Amendment.

Let's tackle the dismissive "Never-heard-of-it" and the insincere "What's-that" and the not-listening-past-the-ear-buds "Huh" crowd all at once.

It was one of the three "Civil War Amendments." The 13th Amendment abolished slavery everywhere it existed. And the 13th Amendment forbade the imposition of "involuntary servitude" except for being able to force labor from convicted criminals:

"Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

The 13th Amendment turns out to be central -- right now, today -- to whether we have a government that adheres to its Constitutional authority and to anyone's Constitutional Rights.

Because at this moment, and for the past month, over 400,000 federal government employees are being forced to work without pay. Moreover, those individuals can be criminally prosecuted if they don't show-up to do their unpaid work.

Sounds a whole lot like "involuntary servitude," doesn't it?

Therefore, we really, really want to see the unions file an emergency petition for a hearing before the Supreme Court on a 13th Amendment violation being perpetrated by the Trumpertantrum-in-Chief.

In the meantime, we want to see Congress pass legislation to reopen the government and fund its operation -- and to pass that into law over a presidential veto, if necessary, as the Constitution provides. (Are you listening, Mitch McConnell? Do your damn job and bring to the Senate floor, for a vote, ALL bills passed by the House of Representatives.)

Then, we want to see a lesson learned and applied from the idiocy of this, and the previous, shutdowns: the entire Congress must stop screwing-around with its extraconstitutional paradigm, serial angst, and creation of opportunities for intransigent Trumpertantrums, that are ALL a product of these wheeled-and-dealed "CR's." Congress must rediscover ITS Constitutional obligations to all of us (including government employees held in involuntary servitude) and legislate REAL budgets that make these stupid shutdowns impossible.

Unrealistic in a culture dependent on gridlock? We can discover toot sweet if we have a legitimate government any more.

2 pm - Annual "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SLACK KEY FESTIVAL" at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Bl (at Aviation Bl), Redondo Beach, CA 90278; Free Parking
* What is Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music?
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (ki ho'alu) is truly one of the world’s great acoustic guitar traditions, considered to be one of the oldest music traditions to still be a viable (other than just historical) part of a modern culture. Ki ho'alu, which literally means to "loosen the key," is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
* This year’s Southern California Slack Key Festival’s line-up includes George Kuo , Kawika Kahiapo, Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Teresa Bright, Bobby Ingano, and Kunia Galdeira.
* James "Kimo" West is a L.A.-based composer, guitarist and music producer. He is also well-known as long-time guitarist for the world's most successful musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic and also as one of the world's top "slack key" guitarists. For over twenty-five years, he has composed music for features, network and cable TV, advertising, documentaries and web series. Completely self-taught, he learned orchestration "on the job" by re-scoring music for thirteen classic Fox films, entirely by ear. Scores for such films as "Journey to The Center of the Earth", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Sun Also Rises" were being released in foreign markets with new language tracks and, since many of the music elements were missing, Jim was hired to "re-score" the original music under dialog. His interest in "ki ho'alu" or Hawaiian slack key guitar began during his first visit to Hawaii, in the rural town of Hana, Maui. It was there he fell in love with the lilting sound of slack key. Evidently director Alexander Payne did as well, featuring slack key music for the score of the Oscar-winning film, "The Descendants". "Kimo" as he is known in Hawaii is recognized as one of the masters of slack key and has received many awards such as The Hawaii Music Award, The L.A. Treasures Award and is twice-nominated for the Na Hoku Hanohano Award (the Hawaiian "Grammy". He performs in slack key festivals and concerts and his slack key compositions grace five CD's, documentaries and national TV spots. His work with "Weird Al" has produced three Grammy's, many gold and platinum albums, international touring and TV appearances on The Tonight Show, The View, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and countless others.* Kala Koa Entertainment celebrates 12 years of bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to "the mainland" with the 2019 Southern California Slack Key Festival.
* One of the most acclaimed Hawaiian concerts to ever leave the islands, the Southern California Slack Key Festival takes fans on a Hawaiian musical journey that showcases GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and a free-to-the-public "Island Marketplace."
* This festival was the first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii. It set a major milestone for Hawaiian music events on the mainland when it debuted in 2008, and has garnered a huge loyal following -- creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.
* How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.
* In addition to the concert, the Island Marketplace – free to the public – takes place from 11 am to 5 pm, complete with Shave Ice, Hawaiian food, and great Hawaiian products and crafts.

5 pm-8 pm - BLAKE MILLER & THE OLD FASHIONED ACES play StillWater Spirits & Sounds, 24701 Del Prado Av, Dana Point, CA 92629
* Guy Martin of the "Louisiana Dancing" blog writes, "As the grandson of the world-renowned Cajun accordion-builder Larry Miller, helping in his grandfather’s shop from a very early age, he met and was influenced by some of the greatest names in Louisiana music."
* Band leader Blake Miller says, “This is what I grew up with. I thought everyone listened to Cajun music all the time.”
* Guy Martin adds, "Inspired by the constant contact with famed Cajun and Creole musicians, the steady stream of house parties and jams at his grandfather’s shop, Miller has been playing since receiving his first toy accordion at age 5, and also plays fiddle, guitar, bass, and his latest obsession, steel guitar. He’s gone on to become a legendary Cajun musician himself.
"Having played widely throughout the U.S. and traveling all over the world in his 32 years, as founding member of Pine Leaf Boys and member of the Red Stick Ramblers Miller has performed with just about every renowned Cajun artist in Louisiana, and an extensive list of venues rivaling that of a musician twice his age.
"Asked how he came to the Aces trio configuration, Miller says, “I wanted to do something more homey, like comfort food-you know, like a great gumbo. Something that would stick to your ribs."
* Miller says, “My favorite places to play are the old opera houses and the dance halls. The places with low ceilings, dark, not always good sound. The grittier places.”
* Martin concludes, "What inspires and drives Miller is his passion for bringing back traditional Cajun music and letting people know that 'Cajun music is alive! It’s happening! It’s the real thing! Come check it out!'”

7 pm - MICHAEL NESMITH plays the Troubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Bl, West Hollywood, CA 90069; 310-276-6168; http://www.troubadour.com
* At age 76, Michael Nesmith is on a roll. The singer-guitarist has finally embraced his past as a member of The Monkees in tours with Micky Dolenz the past few years. He's also drawn from his underrated solo career, where he paved the way for numerous others by mixing rock and country long before it was hip. Tonight, Papa Nes revisits his 1972 solo album, "And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’," accompanied by guitarist Pete Finney, who evokes parts originally played by late pedal-steel maestro Red Rhodes. "And the Hits..." is an unusual record with thoughtful ballads like "The Upside of Goodbye" and a homespun intimate version of the early Linda Ronstadt hit "Different Drum" delivered with little more than stripped-down guitars. (Written with substantial borrowing from Falling James in LA Weekly.)
* TIX are costly as hell: $60 & $205.

Tue, Jan 22:
8 pm - BRITTNI PAIVA: LEGENDARY HAWAIIAN MASTER OF UKULELE, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; phone for reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days: 626-798-6236.
* Venue impresario Bob Stande says, "We only get her once every 5 years. During her last performance at Coffee Gallery she sold out the show and many people were turned away. Reserve in advance so you are not one of them!"
* Brittni Paiva (pie –VAH) already a multi award-winning instrumentalist is known for her stunning articulation of what she can do on the ukulele going from slow and moving, to rapid-fire, classical-ballet, to ancient Japan, translating forms of jazz, world beat, pop, Flamenco and Latin, and filter these styles through her 4-string ukulele.
* Brittni and her ukulele are a brilliant match: Both are humble in nature, small in size, and very powerful with proper delivery. Brittni and the ukulele in general have gained notoriety, no longer confined by stereotypes about the instrument. There’s a global resurgence in the instrument’s popularity and she is part of the trend.
* She has performed on stage with Carlos Santana when he appeared in Hawaii; also joined famed guitarist Tommy Emmanuel on stage at the California Worldfest; and become a 3-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner with numerous other nominations throughout the years, including Most Promising Artist of the Year in 2005 for her debut release, Brittni x 3.
* Releasing her 5th CD with the legendary Grammy winner Tom Scott — who personally requested to play with her at a concert — thinks Paiva is the real deal, because of her ability to play all kinds of music without losing her identity. “She plays it like a guitar, giving her a wide range of possibilities. She adopts tunes to this instrument, and makes them sound full and rich. She’s doing a great job and has a great future…She’s got a really unique voice in music,” he raved.
* Brittni received two nominations for this 5th CD and won both categories: Ukulele Album of the Year and Best Instrumental Composition of the Year from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (Na Hoku Hanohano Awards).
* “Brittni brings a whole new spirit to the music and to the instrument: pop sensibilities in a smooth jazz format,” says John Schroeter, music producer and author of Between the Strings: The Secret Lives of Guitars. “It’s got a new kind of energy—it’s infectious.”
* Brittni is well-known in world music circles with millions of hits on YouTube. She began her music career at age four trained in classical piano through the Suzuki method. Seven years later, her grandfather gave her an `ukulele, a traditional 4-string Hawaiian folk instrument. It was “love at first touch”.

Tue, Jan 22:
9 pm - FIONA GREY plays free with RSVP at Madame Siam, 1723 N Hudson Av, East Hollywood (L.A.), CA 90028; http://www.madamesiam.com
* "Whether she’s backed by just an acoustic guitarist or pulling out all the showy stops in a full-band performance augmented by her crew of sexy dancers, Fiona Grey radiates star power and endless charisma," opines LA Weekly's Falling James. He adds, "Decked out onstage in a long, sheer wedding veil, white boots and matching thigh-high stockings, the local singer revels in and embraces the idea of fame with such wearily cynical but inevitably seductive dance-pop songs as 'Money' and 'Media Queen, 'from her 2018 album, 'Cult Classic'."
* This isn't for everyone. Those who like their lyrics about thoughtful concepts best not go. Here are some of her lyrics: "If I had a god, it would be you, honey / Lay me on your bed, f*ck me on your money." That is an example that Falling James cites, characterizing it as, "she pleads soulfully on 'Fangirl.'" He quotes more of her lyrics: "'I’m all dressed up, queen with no crown / I try to be tough / It’s safer here on the ground,' she laments on the more introspective ballad 'Girls Like Me'."
* He also adds, "Catch her now in small clubs while she’s still a cult heroine."
* That may be true, James. It's more a case of whether she's someone's cup of whatever they're drinking.
* The rest of the night's lineup leaves no chance of being acoustic; it's: Uruguay, MXMS, and a DJ.

8 pm - JIM & ANNE CURRY: "THE SONGS OF JOHN DENVER," at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; phone for reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days: 626-798-6236.
* Favorites here who usually play big venues -- VERY big venues, often with symphony orchestras backing them -- husband and wife team Jim and Anne Curry brilliantly specialize in delivering the multi-platinum hits of the late, great John Denver.
* On tap is a fun-filled evening of singing and stories, and yes, you are invited to sing along.
* John Denver was the first artist to sing and speak eloquently for protecting the planet. His song "Rocky Mountain High" became the anthem that caused Colorado to reject the Winter Olympics because it would have over-developed a vast area of the high back country.
* The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Join acclaimed performer Jim Curry for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage.
* Jim plays the guitar and sings John’s songs in a crystal clear tenor that will take your breath away. Anne, his wife and musical partner, plays guitar and mandolin and sings harmony in all the right places. Together, they will take you on a musical journey of the heart, where you will be invited to sing, clap your hands, stomp your feet and howl at the moon. Don’t worry; you already know the words to the songs!
* Tribute artist Jim Curry, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story," has performed Denver's music in sold out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High" "Sunshine" "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other. Denver’s message is worth repeating: “Be kind to the Earth and to each other.”
* Tix, $18. Make reservations or it'll be so packed that you won't get in.

Sat, Feb 2:
7 pm - DIVINE WEEKS record release show for their final album "We’re All We Have" is a benefit for "WISH Inclusive Public Schools," as they share the billing with THE PRATIES at BeatBox Studios, 11828 Teale St, Culver City Ca 90230
* For starters, this listing goes off the reservation for lots of our readers. So why is it here? Arguably, DIVINE WEEKS is, and for decades has been, L.A.’s seminal indie guitar band. And this a lot like their farewell concert.
* "Variety" called "We’re All We Have" one of 2018’s "10 best releases." Specifically: "An unabashedly — yet never obviously political — cycle of songs about showing love in the face of darkness, the album might be alternately titled 'Songs to Survive the Current Administration By.'" -- Chris Morris, in "Variety." Read his full story at:
https://variety.com/2018/music/opinion/10-best-albums-of-2018-chris-morris-1203089328
* This album wraps-up the band's three-decade long legacy of ups and downs. That includes signing to Steve Wynn’s Down There Record Label (with the Dream Syndicate’s Dennis Duck on drums) which brought their critically-acclaimed debut album way back in 1987 -- geologic time in the indie music world. They go back so far that their 2nd album was released the same day as Nirvana’s "Nevermind." Then came a 25 year hiatus. That was followed by front man Bill See’s 2011 memoir "33 Days," and 2016’s "See Those Landing Lights" reunion.
* This album -- their final incendiary statement -- calls for love, redemption and being on the left side of history in Trump’s America, and it features the powerful final single, “Fight For Love.”
* Music history. You might want to say, "I was there."

Sat, Feb 2:
8 pm - "REDACTED TONIGHT" host LEE CAMP opens for JULIAN CASABLANCAS and THE VOIDZ at The Wiltern Theatre, 3790 Wilshire Bl, Los Angeles, CA 90010
* Lee Camp and his TV / internet show "REDACTED TONIGHT" are, without doubt, the best sociopolitical weekly comedy show out there. It's based in Washington, DC, which Lee identifies every week in his intro, as "The belly of the beast."
* Any time he comes to L.A. it's a big deal -- even this time, to open for other acts.
* Lee says, "If you don't know THE VOIDZ, you probably know Julian's other band, THE STROKES. Anyway, it will be incredible rock music, and I'll be throwing a little comedy into the mix as well. It will be a BIG night. This will sell out soon."
* TIX: https://concerts1.livenation.com/event/0900556B3B955588
* You can purchase your tickets for THIS show at the Hollywood Palladium every Saturday from 10 am-2 pm without service charges for this event, subject to availability. That Box Office is not open during holiday weekends. Call 213-531-0588 to upgrade to the Wiltern Underground Experience. Times vary - "JONI 75" musically celebrates JONI MITCHELL on her 75th birthday. An incredible array of singers and musicians converged over two nights in November 2018 at The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles and the music documentary was crafted from those two performances.
* To honor Joni Mitchell, one of the world’s most remarkable artists, a hand-selected group of peers and protégés performed.
* The lineup included Brandi Carlile; Glen Hansard; Emmylou Harris; Norah Jones; Chaka Khan; Diana Krall; Kris Kristofferson; Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro & Xochi Flores; Graham Nash; Seal; James Taylor; Rufus Wainwright; and more.
* Individually and together they paid tribute to the iconic artist, performing her songs from all stages of Mitchell’s life and career, across her entire catalog of 19 studio albums.
* As an artist, Mitchell performed with an emotional honesty that resonated with a wide audience. The unifying effect of Mitchell’s music rings out with a closing group singalong to “Big Yellow Taxi” during which Mitchell herself is captured on camera.
