 GET TIX NOW...
Wed, May 8:
7:30 pm - BRUCE FORMAN, leader of COW BOP, who jokes about being named "Poet Laureate of North Coast Brewery," plays his critically-acclaimed signature concert, "THE RED GUITAR" at Upstairs at Vitellos,  4349 Tujunga Av, Studio City CA 91604
*  He doesn't do this show often. It's a masterwork, based on the theme of "The Red Shoes," wherein a little girl wants to dance like a great ballerina, so she dons the magic red shoes and cannot stop -- until she dances herself to death. Forman's reimagining is a twist on Robert Johnson at the infamous crossroads -- here, the wanna-be-the-greatest character is Forman, who wants to play like all the great jazz guitarists. And when he picks up the red guitar, he does. Seriously, he DOES. The guy has the chops to do it, replicating all the moves, all the licks, of all the greats, nonstop -- which is why this show is a must-see. In addition to the dazzling guitar playing, there are his on-stage "interactions" with Faust and Freud during the can't-stop-playing performance.
*  BRUCE tells us it's "A performance of my updated one-man show at Vitello's... Please get your tickets early, they are really tough there and are liable to raise the ticket prices for walk-ins... This is a great venue for the show, and rumor has it that there will be some jazz intervention at the end..."
* THEN HE ADDS THIS: "I'll be just getting back from playing at JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER... so I'll be inna Broadway kinda mood..."
*  We told you he has the chops to do it! If you're reading far enough in advance, you can also catch him with COW BOP, his Western swing band, at an event for the "Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival" on Fri, Apr 12; see listing.
*  More at: www.bruceforman.com

ONGOING,  through April 21:
10 am-5 pm - "POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION" at the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Dr, Simi Valley, CA, 93065
* Go back in time with this spectacular exhibit to relive the lost world of Ancient Rome. Pompeii was a playground, the Las Vegas of its time. Until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius encased all of it -- including its people -- in a deep layer of volcanic ash that fell from the sky like a deadly blizzard.
* When rediscovery of Pompeii came accidentally in the digging of a well, a period ensued of raiding the buried city for treasure. Then, in large measure because of the greedy raiding, much of what became modern archaeology developed to document, understand, and protect the integrity of the lost civilization.
*  This awe-inspiring exhibition features nearly 200 artifacts hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until rediscovered over 250 years ago. "Pompeii: The Exhibition" includes frescoes, mosaics, gladiator helmets, armor, weapons, plates, furniture, jewelry, statues, and more.
*  Plaster casts of people who were buried alive in the ash are included -- the ash encased them, and their presence literally left a void that could be reclaimed by wet plaster.
* A "4-D eruption theater" is a key interpretive element, allowing visitors to experience the deathly impact Mount Vesuvius had on this ancient city.
*  Make plans to see this while it's here.
* The Reagan library offers over 125,000 square feet of exhibits, so allow a minimum of three to four hours to enjoy all of the galleries and grounds; yes, they do have food.
* TIX to the library through Apr 21 INCLUDE "Pompeii." Save the box office waiting line by buying online -- but you must select the date and time you would like to visit.
General Admission $29; Seniors (age 62+) $26; Youth (age 11-17) $22; Child (age 3-10) $19; Children under age 2 are free; add-on audio tour rental $7; Active US Military service member free with valid Military ID, walk-ups get in without timed ticket.

OPENING May 19... Ongoing: May 19, 2019–Jan 5, 2020:
Art exhibition: "COYOTE LEAVES THE RES: THE ART OF HARRY FONSECA" at the Autry Museum of the American West, across from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park, at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027

*  Explore the complexity of Harry Fonseca’s art (Nisenan Maidu, Hawaiian, Portuguese, 1946–2006) within the context of a contemporary world, in which new freedoms and old biases often exist side-by-side.
*  Featuring paintings, sketches, and lithographs, this exhibition focuses on the recurring figure of Coyote, a trickster, shape shifter, and storyteller capable of moving undetected between different worlds.
*  Fonseca was an instrumental force in reshaping Native art with his trademark blend of traditional imagery, contemporary experience, and vibrant color and form. As he used his art to explore both his personal journey and the role of history in shaping Native consciousness in the present, Fonseca sought to expand definitions of American Indian art and to shatter the expectations and stereotypes that had long confined it.
*  As both a gay man and a person of mixed heritage, Fonseca used his work as a vehicle for self-discovery a means of navigating different aspects of his life and identity during a time when ideas about Native peoples were often driven by outside forces, including commercial markets, tourism, and historical clichĆ©s.
*  RUNS May 19, 2019–January 5, 2020 in the Autry's George Montgomery Gallery.
*  Opens daily at 10 am. Closes Tue-Fri at 4 pm, Sat & Sun at 5 pm.

ONGOING, in San Pedro:
"LOST AT SEA: THE EXPLORATIONS OF DR. ROBERT BALLARD" is an exhibition aboard the BATTLESHIP IOWA, docked as a museum in San Pedro, at 250 S Harbor Bl, Los Angeles, CA 90731
*  “Everyone is an explorer. How could you possibly live your life looking at a door and not open it?” – Dr. Robert Ballard, discoverer of the wreck of RMS TITANIC.
*  The exhibit opened Oct 31, 2018 after previews during "Fleet Week."
*  It includes the "Lost at Sea" gallery, "Alpha Romeo Tango (ART)" art gallery, and ship tour expansion that now includes the USS Iowa's capability as a floating city, with a look at the ship's on-board laundry, barbershop, and brig.
*  Battleship IOWA Museum was chosen to launch “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” before it goes elsewhere. Ballard is known the world over for his discovery of the final resting place of the Titanic; yet, he has quested for and found many more vessels whose origins date over the past 2,000 years. Their common fate was that they have been claimed by our oceans and seas. Many lie undisturbed as what Ballard calls “undersea museums,” and these are revealed to visitors aboard the historic USS IOWA.
*  This retrospective is a showcase for the Iowa to highlight many of the world’s most historically noted underwater wrecks, found by the explorer.
* “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” was made possible by a generous grant from the Confidence Foundation and is jointly sponsored by Dr. Robert Ballard, the Port of Los Angeles, Ocean Exploration Trust, and AltaSea.
*  The "Lost at Sea" exhibit is included with General Admission to the Battleship IOWA. Museum ticket office opens daily at 10 am and the last tour ticket is sold at 4 pm. *  Regardless, join him today, Saturday, April 20th -- er, 4-20 -- when "Roots Music and Beyond," under his ridiculously sober guidance, explores the iconic haze of music celebrating the occasion.
*  We got one preview from Art. You might notice the very "un-hip" Lawrence Welk is named in the shows poster. Well, it seems that the Champagne Music Makers backed two clean-cut, up-and-coming kid singers who were making a splash with Christian Music. Neither the kids nor Welk seemed to understand that the operative words in their song were not "sweet Jesus," but were words none of them knew, that went, "One toke over the line." Yep, he has the recording and you'll hear the song and their naively innocent banter.
*  In Southern California, it's broadcast at 90.7 FM from Los Angeles.
*  Globally, it streams live at http://www.kpfk.org
*  And, if 6 am is too much for you on a Saturday, the show will be available on demand on the KPFK archive page for fourteen days.
*  Art, ever the gig master, adds, "So, pour yourself a cup of coffee, turn on (the radio, that is), tune in, and... well you know the rest. A box of Oreos couldn't hurt."

Today is EARTH DAY, first observed on April 22, 1970. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D, Wisconsin). Nelson, who died July 3, 2005, was an American politician and environmentalist who also served his state as governor.

As the founder of Earth Day, which launched a new wave of environmental activism, his affiliation as a Democrat -- and the resistance from rich, polluting industrialists who gravitated to the Republican Party anyway -- set a pattern for decades to come of the GOP defending polluters and the Dems taking stands to save places in the natural world.

That has brought us to the partisan divide over who accepts the scientific proof of Global Climate Change.

Of course, today, running for office requires many millions of dollars, and Big Money has poisoned the well for both parties, giving rise to the Green Party and to avant garde candidates led by Bernie Sanders who refuse to take any big donations or any corporate money.

Like it or not, politics matters to the fate of the planet. And it depends on YOU having a good BS detector to "out" the shills, liars, con men, and grab-it-and-go defilers and exploiters.

See the Guide's companion NEWS EDITION for feature stories related to Earth Day / Earth Week for things you can do,  and check our listings here in the EVENTS EDITION for things you can attend where you'll meet like-minded folks!

Thu, Apr 25, on BROADCAST & WEB RADIO:
3 pm-7 pm - "THE RETURN OF MARK & BRIAN" for one radio shift to celebrate this year's 50th anniversary of KLOS, which went on-air in Los Angeles in 1969. Back then, it was cutting-edge FM rock radio. It competed with the legendary 94.7 FM KMET until the latter was murdered when the Fox empire bought Metromedia. KLOS continued for years without serious competition, employing some former KMET jocks, including Mary Turner and Jim Ladd. But their long-running morning show drive-time duo -- retired now for years -- was Mark & Brian.
*  MARK & BRIAN brought everything from an annual star-studded Christmas show for charity to an annual blood drive that broke all preexisting records, and plenty of community benefit projects, fun gatherings for listeners, and yeah, sometimes eye-rolling juvenile humor (like their "Black & Decker Vibrator Competition" -- use your imagination).
*  Nothing in L.A. radio has taken their place. (Considering that KMET's Paraquat Kelly was off the air before they got to town.)
*  Today, they'll resurrect antics, have name-drop-caliber guests who may play a few tunes live, and otherwise "play whatever you want." Though we strongly 'spect that'll include one that Mark really likes: the Marty Robbins cowboy classic, "El Paso."
*  Live ON AIR at 95.5 FM in Southern California.
*  ONLINE live everywhere at: http://www.955klos.com/

7:30 pm - STEPHEN  MENDEL plus CLAUDIA NYGAARD play the "Fireside Concert" series, hosted by Bob Kroll at the Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Rd (at Borchard), Newbury Park CA
*  STEPHEN  MENDEL was born and raised in Montreal, Canada.  He began singing in musical theatre at 8 years old and learned to play guitar soon after. He began playing for a living in coffee houses and Irish bars after graduating from college with a degree in theatre. Acting and voice-over jobs came more readily than musical gigs and eventually became his mainstay.
*  Stephen is best known for the role of Detective Fred Carson on 5 seasons of the CBS-TV series “Night Heat.” Stephen has guest starred on TV shows “Las Vegas," “CSI:  Miami,” “The X Files,” and many others.  He voiced "Splinter" in the "Ninja Turtles" TV series and was in Steven Spielberg’s “The Terminal” with Tom Hanks.
*  Off stage, he skis, teaches scuba diving, and practices the obscure martial art of aki-jutsu. Al Johnson backs him on guitar.
*  More: http://www.stephenmendel.com
*  CLAUDIA NYGAARD has a voice as warm and smooth as amber honey, impressive for both its power and intimacy. She delivers songs that are heartfelt, humorous, scrappy, and sensual, along with the stories in between them.
*  She is a captivating storyteller, with a twinkle in her eye that makes everyone in the audience think she is sharing a secret with them alone. Emotionally fearless, she shares her deepest sorrows with a rare vulnerability and tenderness one moment, then a quick wit and an outlandish, irreverent sense of humor the next.
*  As a salaried staff songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row, Nygaard learned her craft well. Her latest CD, “Let The Storm Roll In,” rose to #1 on the Cashbox Roots/Country chart and #8 on the Folk DJ chart.
*  Two of the songs, “Georgia Boy,” and “J.C.,” won the Kerrville, TX Folk Festival “New Folk” songwriting competition.
*  Americana benchmark magazine “Maverick,” and legendary folk music magazine “Sing Out,” acclaimed the songs. One says her songs “rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson.”

Fri, Apr 26:
8 pm-10 pm - GARRET SWAYNE with SCOTT FIRESTONE and the legendary CHAD WATSON at the Guitar Merchant, 22805 Saticoy St, West Hills CA 91304
*  What talented singer-songwriter Garret Swayne just told us is something many artists understand too well. He said, "Recently, I've been performing mostly in noisy bars where the music has to compete with blenders mixing margaritas, sports on TV, and loud drunks who could care less about the 'deep thoughts' of a brooding songwriter. My songs are thoughtful, compelling. They tell interesting stories, woven in with the music. Some are funny. Some are wistful. They need to be heard in an environment where the subtleties won't be lost."
*  Thus, he says, "I’m playing a real CONCERT! The Guitar Merchant is a quaint little music store in West Hills that also happens to boast a wonderful concert stage in the back, a terrific sound system and great acoustics!"
*  It gets better: joining him are his good friend, drum maestro SCOTT FIRESTONE, "and for the first time, bass legend CHAD WATSON, who has played with the likes of CHARLIE RICH, FREDDY FENDER, JANIS IAN, and many other such luminaries."
*  He's gambling you'll go, not unlike all the artists caught in the "pay-to-play" clubs on Hollywood Boulevard. Here, "We have to rent the space, so we're asking a $10 donation to cover the cost, but no one will be turned away if they can't afford that," says Garret, adding, "We want you to hear our Music! If you like my songs above the din of a loud bar room, I promise, you’ll like them even more in a quiet concert hall!"
*  You can BYOB.
*  Never heard him play,  or been a while? Here's a Youtube video:
https://www.youtube.com/user/garretswayne/videos?sort=p&view=0&flow=grid&live_view=500
*  TIX: only $10 at the door.

 *  With the OSCAR-winning feature film "Bohemian Rhapsody," this concert was planned when that decision was prescient.
*  "We will, we will rock you!" became the memorably avant garde opening sequence to the 2001 medieval adventure-comedy film, "A Knight's Tale," and multiple generations have experienced the power and passion of Queen from the age of the 8-track to the digital download.
*  Now, experience it when a full symphony orchestra and rock band combine to pay tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time.
*  Enjoy hits such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” and many more.

*  Enjoy train rides behind an operating steam locomotive, and a "Caboose Ride Adventure" to the Fillmore Citrus Packing House. (The Fillmore & Western runs on former Southern Pacific RR tracks now publicly-owned and maintained with funding from the Ventura County Transportation Commission.)
"Steampunk fun" is how the Fillmore &
Western Railroad's marketing director describes
Riding the authentic antique carousel
the added emphasis at this year's event.*  In one of the few times we allow the word "unique" to make it to print, it applies here. With activities for visitors, performances by people and machine, demonstrations of early machines and transportation, and vintage wares. There are -- in today's world -- assorted oddities that, in many cases, were common in times lost to us. As anyone involved  with steam restoration or the colorful "steampunk" arts community will tell you, it's all part of a lost culture when responsive mechanical, not menacingly mysterious electronic, devices empowered civilization.
*  It's living history mixed with that "steampunk fun."
*  "Dr. Solar’s Gypsy Wagon Medicine Man Show" is also on hand, as are antique carousel rides, exhibits both temporary and permanent (including tours of adjacent historic buildings), model train displays in three locations, movie props, old west "Frontier Gunfighters," live entertainment, food, wine tasting in the adjacent winery, vendors, and more.
*  Described as a celebration of the “renaissance of railroading,” the family-friendly, kid-friendly festival showcases steam engines, antique tractors, vehicles, and stationary steam and early-day gas engines.

THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVES:
(Quick Primer: they're identified by their assigned "roster numbers" and by their wheel arrangement. The latter is three numbers separated by hyphens. You count the wheels on both sides. So an engine with one unpowered guiding axle -- 2 wheels -- up-front, followed by four powered driving axles-- 8 wheels -- and no trailing wheels under the firebox, is a 2-8-0.)
☆  The 105-year-old Baldwin-built 2-8-0 that's now Fillmore & Western RR # 14 spent its original working life hauling huge blocks of stone from a Kansas quarry. She's now a passenger-hauling star, powering hour-long train rides from the festival site through miles of orange groves of "Heritage Valley." (See photo above of this and the next locomotive.)
☆  The movie prop engine from "The Wild, Wild West" is a full-size unpowered 4-6-0, and actually too big for 19th century track clearances. It remains popular with movie fans.
The Buckeye, a narrow gauge gem that worked in Africa.
See photo above for other steam on the property.
Click any image to enlarge.
☆  New is the beautifully restored "Buckeye," built in 1935 by the Orenstein & Koppel Locomotive Works in Germany. Peter Nott of Arroyo Grande bought the little 0-4-0, and this is its coming-out party. It's two-foot gauge, burns wood or coal, and spent its working life in Africa, where its sister engine, the "Popeye," still remains.
☆   Fans of vintage diesels will see a pair of F-Units of the type that pulled streamlined  passenger trains, like the famous "Super Chief."

Usual F&W power when it's not "Steam Railfest" is the
bulldog-nosed F-unit diesel-electric. F3's and F-7's
pulled many "streamliners" after WWII.
☆  Early "hood unit" diesels are also there, though only hardcore railfans care, or can tell the difference between those, and today's, unesthetic ugly-box locomotives -- all assemblages of right angles with exterior railings and catwalks. Obviously, it's easy to appreciate why now-scarce streamlined diesels were the rage in their age, but face it -- steam is the star here as at any railway fest.
The festival is FREE, with options:
⊙  Operate a real handcar or ride its gasoline-powered descendent, the "Track Speeder."
⊙  Hour-long train ride tickets are $26 for adults, $15 for kids (ages 2-12), and free for kids under age 2, riding on a ticket holder's lap.
⊙  A special 3-hour steam dinner train is another option. It includes an authentic Mexican dinner during Railfest 2019. Ride behind the 105-year-old 2-8-0 #14 Baldwin steam locomotive. Travel through the beautiful Heritage Valley enjoying scenic views all around. Menu includes chips & salsa, rice, beans, cheese enchiladas and beef tamales. Get your tickets at the site below before they sell out.
*  Highball! (Ancient train speak, circa 1840, still used on today's railroads, it means "Go!")

Their music has taken them all over California and they continue to gain praise for their beautiful vocals, carefully crafted harmonies, and spirited style. Their performances at various festivals and concerts continue to elicit rave reviews.
*  Series presenter Steve Brogden says, "In 2017, I was asked to provide some Americana musicians to play an outdoor concert at the Stagecoach Inn here in Thousand Oaks. Two bands came immediately to mind and the Honeysuckle Possums was one of them. Over 300 people attended that event and the Possums were a big hit that day. Their high-energy, harmonies, songwriting, and their sense of humor is what draws me – and others - to them."

Young actor Austi3n SZINTAI will play Coyote, and SHANNON BATU will play Slo the Eagle. SIENNA BATU will play Deer, and BLAKE BONAFEDE and ORAYA STEVENSON will play Rabbits.

*  The Beatunes bring together four of Southern Cal’s top musicians, solely to honor and play as faithfully to the recordings as possible, and reinvigorate the timeless and spirit-lifting music of The Beatles.
*  The Beatunes continue to increase their repertoire and precision in replicating the sound of The Beatles. From the early "Fab Four" days to the final recordings, band members constantly search for new ways to bring more realism to the sound.
*  It may sound ridiculous to say tbat every sound you hear at a Beatunes concert is played live by the band. But It's necessary, because they always get accused of lip synching to original Beatles recordings. No tracks. It's done live. It's done right. If there’s some kind of magic in the air, it's in the music. No wigs. No costumes. Simply the timeless music of the band that rocked history, fun and respectfully done right.

7:30 pm - BRUCE FORMAN, leader of COW BOP, and Poet Laureate of North Coast Brewery, plays his critically-acclaimed signature concert, "The Red Guitar," at Upstairs at Vitellos,  4349 Tujunga Av, Studio City CA 91604
*  He doesn't do this show often. It's a masterwork, based on the theme of "The Red Shoes," wherein a little girl wants to dance like a great ballerina, and she dons the red shoes and cannot stop -- until she dances herself to death. In Forman's reimagining, he wants to play like all the great jazz guitarists, and when he picks up the red guitar, he does. Seriously, he DOES. The guy has the chops to do it, which is why this show is a must-see. In addition to his interactions with Faust and Freud during the can't-stop-playing performance.
If you're reading this far enough in advance, you can also catch him with COW BOP, his Western swing band, at an event for the "Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival" on Fri, Apr 12; see listing.

Fri, May 24; Fri-Sun, May 24-26, LIVE THEATRE:
8 pm - "DAMN YANKEES," the classic musical comedy, returns in a production by Cedar Street Theatre at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center (LPAC), 750 W Lancaster Bl, Lancaster, CA 93534; www.lpac.org
The original Broadway cast album still sells on CD.
*  With a book by GEORGE ABBOTT and DOUGLASS WALLOP, music and lyrics by RICHARD ADLER and JERRY ROSS, "Damn Yankees" debuted on Broadway in 1955 with a '30s-'40s feel and STEPHEN DOUGLASS in the lead role.
*  Hollywood made a film version in 1958, giving top billing to TAB HUNTER with GWEN VERDON and RAY WALSTON reprising their Broadway roles.
retaining only two of the Broadway songs and filling in with its own replacements. Still, as imdb notes, "the concept of this musical was the preoccupation of the American public with the national pastime of baseball, and its singular domination (between 1947 and 1962) by the New York Yankees."
*  Yes, there is intentional double entendre with the the derisive singularity applied for a hundred years in the former Confederate states to anyone from any other part of the country, but it stops there.
*  So, what's it about? Musicians will ses something of a parallel to the tale of bluesman Robert Johnson.
*  Here, the lead character is middle-aged baseball fanatic "Joe Boyd," who trades his soul to the Devil to make his hapless favorite team suddenly unstoppable winners -- with himself as the team's new star player. Since, if you want something done right, you should do it yourself.
*  The team -- the  Washington Senators -- was, twice upon a time, the real American League major league baseball team in DC, long before today's National League Washington Nationals. The period not only determines the tunage, but adds a lot to the sense of compelling cultural phenomena when baseball truly was the national pastime.
*  The devil, also known as "Mr. Applegate," takes credit for getting the Senators in the pennant race against the perennial AL champs, the New York Yankees. (Make your own comparisons about the devil tempting senators in our own time.)
*  On the field, Joe, the young baseball sensation, transforms the cellar dwellers into a winning team -- only for Joe to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind.
*  When Joe returns to his former life, Applegate demands his soul. Will Joe be able to resist the temptress, Lola, and outsmart the Devil at his own game?
Art for the new production.
*  Obviously, a diamond and outfield won't fit on the stage of a performing arts center, and it is here in the charmingly crafted story, the essential questions of ends vs. means, of "what would YOU do for something you want" -- and of course, in the musical performances -- that the show has remained an enduring hit.
*  Light, fast-paced, delightfully tune-filled and devilishly clever, "Damn Yankees" has been a homerun for decades, featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor.
*  The production runs three performances:
□ Fri, May 24, 8 pm.
□ Sat, May 25, 8 pm.
□ Sun, May 26, 2 pm matinee.
*  Tickets $25; Senior & Youth tix, $22.

Fri-Sun, May 10-12:
150th anniversary of the driving of the GOLDEN SPIKE, completing the first transcontinental railroad at remote Promontory Summit, Utah, will be re-enacted May 10 at the exact time, and again on Sat & Sun, May 11 & 12, all on the exact same site. A THREE-DAY FESTIVAL at Golden Spike National Historic Site, hosted by the National Park Service, and another parallel FESTIVAL in Ogden, Utah, co-hosted by the local community and the Union Pacific Railroad, beginning May 9th, are centerpiece events.

A.J. Russell's 1869 photograph provides the basis for each re-enactor's role, 150 years later, to the day.
*  With replica steam locomotives, actors portraying each person in the famous photos, and a festival with live music of the era, it's irresistible for some (including our editor).
*  The Golden Spike climaxed the feat of the age, every bit as dramatic an accomplishment in 1869 as the Moon landing was a hundred years later in 1969.
*  For the 150th anniversaty, a lot is going on. In Ogden, Utah on May 9th, a stylistically similar event will be held with two giants from the late age of steam. Union Pacific will  ceremonially stage a head-to-head meeting of 4-8-4 "Northern" number 844, and just-restored 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" number 4014. The two will run from Cheyenne,  Wyoming,  to Ogden, under their own steam.
Returning to the very rails for which it was built, the "Big Boy" will make a commemorative run
from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, Utah. It will mark the return of number 4014 after decades of
stuffed-and-mounted display at Fairplex in Pomona, CA. The engine will mimic the Promontory
event, coming head-to-head with UP steam icon number 844, another giant of WWII-era steam.

*  The 4014 sat in the LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS IN POMONA, stuffed-and-mounted on display for decades. When the giant "Big Boy" emerges from rebuild in the Cheyenne roundhouse to run to Utah, it will be back on the very route for which its type was built, and it will again be the largest operating locomotive in the world.
*  There's plenty more at these sites:
•  National Park Service, Golden Spike NHS:

Despite the loss of most of the buildings, the show will go on with some adaptive measures. *  Children can compete too, and you will be amazed at the talent.
