Indeed we DO have tons 'o music in this edition. But it's Earth Day, and we all need to find some genuine encouragement amidst a lot of news that keeps getting worse. So that's where we open, with taking account and finding a whole lot of good.

PLANETARY SELFIE FOR EARTH DAY, from the European Space Agency (ESA).

"Each year on 22 April, people across the planet join forces to raise awareness about the depleting quality of the environment, the unequivocal effects of climate change and the importance of protecting our planet for future generations. We celebrate Earth Day every day at ESA. This week, this spectacular image of Earth is brought to you by the Meteosat Second Generation series of missions." ~ ESA, April 22, 2022.

It's Spring, it's Earth Day, birds are singing, fields are greening, flowers are in bloom, it's light outdoors 'til 7 o'clock, it's warm enough for barbecues. Festivals are returning. Outdoor concerts are making a comeback. Backyard jams with musical friends are happening. In just a month, Memorial Day Weekend will take us into summer! And just going out again, and staying out later -- reclaiming our places at indoor music venues, too -- at long last, feels natural again.

Of course it's all tempered by the times. Unemployment may be at a record low, but housing prices are at record highs. We're having our wings clipped by record prices at the pump that feed all-time record profits for Big Oil. And getting the world off fossil fuels while being free of nukes is complicated by a quagmire of tragedies and propagandistic justifications that enrich a few at the expense of the global many.

An entire modern city has become an Alamo, a tragic rallying point for the resistance of an entire people in the face of a bully more egotistical and even more murderous than the world has seen in years.

Even the villain of the original Alamo, self-proclaimed "El Supremo" Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana, was never as vile on his quest of subjugation and conquest. But we know what came from "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" and we can be certain that "Remember Mariupol!" will likewise result in an invader being handed his own derriere.

Still, sports analogies and rah-rahs cannot mask the blood and suffering half a world away -- not in Ukraine, not in Yemen, not in Myanmar. Trying to be oblivious will not serve your soul, your psyche, your conscience, or your desire for a world living in harmony. So help someone somewhere.

Dozens of relief organizations are helping literally millions of refugees and working to get basic food and medical supplies in to the besieged. Pick one or more and part with a few bucks, in the name of humanity.

Every individual has others they love, dreams they hope to achieve, favorite songs and tunes and singers and bands, favorite colors, and even favorite places -- which may well have been destroyed.

It's not just you or me. Everyone has skin that can be burned or pierced, blood that can be donated to save lives or spilled at the hands of another. We are, each of us, all of us, people, with limitless potential and dreams bigger than the sky.

There simply is no way to smoothly transition to anything else. The  news produces a sense of dragging the tone arm all the way across the vinyl record, through big speakers. Yet we go -- with FAR more hope and optimism -- to another necessary story.

Hope for Earth Day

Green Energy DOES work

On April 4, 2022, California's electric grid was 97% supplied by wind, solar, and geothermal sources. Okay, it only lasted a few minutes, but it WAS successfully done.

Hang on, don't mutter with cynicism and call it a stunt.

EVERY DAY, California now meets more than 60% of its electric grid demands with green energy. That is ahead of both schedule and expectations.

We all know that the pandemic shutdown produced the cleanest air in the world's cities in centuries. We also know that the best science -- cited by the foremost learned experts in climate research -- clearly tells us we are nearly out of time. Not just to prevent even more devastating effects from runaway climate change, but for sustaining human society. And we know that Big Oil continues to get US taxpayer subsidies even as they post the highest record profits in history and run their extortion racket to impoverish us at the pumps. We know that, behind much of it, the Supreme Court's rulings in Citizens United and McCutcheon unleashed unlimited money from self-serving billionaires and multinational corporations to buy Members of Congress, US Senators, and state and local politicians to do the bidding of the exploiters.

So what do WE have, in the face of all THAT?

Economics. Green Energy is now the cheapest to produce of any option that's out there.

So, congratulations, California! Amidst your apocalyptic drought and twelve-month fire season, you proved the cynics and critics and naysayers and self-serving rich jerks wrong. You showed the world that dependence on fossil fuels -- from countries run by murderous oligarch-controlled dictators -- is not any future we must accept. Your example proves so much. Handing-over a world with melting polar caps raising sea levels that submerge coastal cities, that changes regions of evaporation and precipitation, that causes desertification of essential farmlands, need NOT be what we leave future generations. The next Great Extinction need not race forward to break the web of life such that the biosphere itself collapses.

California, you rallied our hopes just in time for Earth Day. You rallied our hopes after the deflating heartbreak of two "corporate Dem" US Senators joining the full cadre of climate-denier GQP Senators to block an essential Green New Deal.

We cannot rest on your laurels, and neither can you. You do not have the water to let us use you as an oasis to replenish our spirits. But you showed a sustainable energy future IS possible, and you did it in the face of the corporate ("corpirate") controlled toadies.

Of course there is more. There must be, if we are to make it. Take this example, from the Washington Post...

"Los Angeles is aiming to be first major carbon-free U.S. city, but obstacles loom"

Erica Werner's story begins:

"Confronted by devastating wildfires, parching drought and ever-hotter summers, Los Angeles is launching an ambitious plan to combat climate change by becoming the first major U.S. city run entirely on clean energy. But it won’t be easy." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2021/10/27/los-angeles-2035-climate-goal/)

And even the things that seem small, but are not...

"California set to become first state to ban gasoline-powered lawn equipment"

This piece by Tik Root opens with:

"Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that would phase out the sale of new gas-powered lawn equipment in the state by 2024." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2021/10/12/california-newsom-law-equipment-pollution/)

And even in New York City...

"The Empire State Building and its related buildings are now powered by wind"

Sarah Kaplan reports:

"The Empire State Building and its 13 related properties are buying wind power, making it the nation's largest real estate portfolio to go green." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2021/02/03/climate-empire-state-wind/)

None of which grants any of us a free pass. Who wants to face a question from their grandchild in an emergency shelter with dwindling supplies, imploring, "What did you do in the olden days to keep this from happening?"

Here are some looks at little ways we can change the world...

"Reusing, recycling, rethinking"

Jessica Wolfrom reports:

"Disturbed by the amount of trash their family of four was generating, Justin and Anna Marino adopted a 'zero waste' lifestyle. Then they took it a step further, opening the first zero-waste store in the Washington [D.C.] area." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2020/12/10/climate-solutions-zero-waste/)

And...

"Female scientists focus on a secret weapon to fight climate change: Moms"

Sarah Kaplan reports:

“One of the most powerful ways for us to connect over climate change is … this fundamental value that we share,” said scientist Katharine Hayhoe, who is helping to lead a $10 million campaign to educate mothers around ways to combat climate change. “We want to ensure a better and safer future for our child.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2021/01/12/climate-science-moms/)

And...

"An ancient people with a modern climate plan"

Jim Morrison writes:

"A native American tribe living on an island off the coast of Washington [state] long ago recognized the threat of climate change. They implemented a climate action plan in 2010, melding traditional practices with science. Now, 50 other native tribes across the country have similar strategies, way ahead of U.S. communities." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2020/11/24/native-americans-climate-change-swinomish/)

And...

"After a tornado nearly destroyed it, this town built back green"

Annie Gowen reports:

"A tornado nearly destroyed tiny Greensburg, Kansas. The city harnessed that wind and rebuilt itself as an energy efficient wonder powered by 100 percent wind energy."

And...

"Trying to shop sustainably? Here’s what you need to consider."

Sarah Kaplan writes:

"To determine whether a product is truly 'green,' you’ll have to look deeper than its earth-toned packaging." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2020/11/20/climate-curious-shopping/)

And...

"The world is getting hotter. Can temperature-controlled clothing provide some relief?"

Peter Holley reports:

"Sony has introduced a new product called the Reon Pocket, which operates like a mobile air conditioner that fits inside clothing." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/07/30/world-is-getting-hotter-can-temperature-controlled-clothing-provide-some-relief/)

 We note:
The fashion industry pollutes heavily. It consumes huge quantities of water and produces 10 percent of global carbon emissions — more than all international air travel and maritime shipping combined.

And...

"Bringing the chill of the cosmos to a warming planet"

By Sarah Kaplan, with a great video by William Neff:

"Scientists are tapping into a law of physics to create cooling systems that work without special fuel or electricity. Long ago, in lands that were always warm, people got ice from the heavens. At sunset, they poured water into shallow earthen pits or ceramic trays insulated with reeds. All through the night the water would radiate its heat into the chilly void of space. By morning, it turned to ice — even though the air temperature never dropped below freezing. This wasn’t magic; it was science." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2020/10/07/radiative-cooling-climate-change/?itid=sf_climate-solutions)
_

Point being, alternatives to despair begin with empowerment brought by knowledge. Plenty of reporters write for media outlets that maintain commitments to cover climate change and the environment.

Support them and their editors. Subscribe to the Los Angeles Times, or the New York Times, or the Guardian, or the LA Progressive, or the Washington Post.

You may note that every story we cite above has come from the Post, and there is a reason why:

FREE, through Earth Day, the Washington Post is making all of its stories on the environment accessible to all, at:

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/

Thus ALL the individual story links above -- and hundreds more from their site and archive -- work RIGHT NOW at NO COST.

The Post's motto is "Democracy dies in darkness." We add to that the last stanza of the T.S. Eliot poem "The Hollow Men," written nearly a hundred years ago, in 1925: "This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but a whimper."

And we repeat our own point, "Alternatives to despair begin with empowerment brought by knowledge."

And then, armed with knowledge, you must fight. It seems crazy that anyone would stand in opposition when everyone is at peril, but greed is insidious.

For example, we all want to be healthy, too, and even oligarchs want their workers and serfs to be healthy enough to be productive and boost profits. Yet in the US -- the only developed nation without health care for all -- the vast majority of the population wants Medicare for all, including 81% of registered Democrats and 2/3 of registered independents. Only three interests keep buying politicians to keep us from having it: insurance companies, Big Pharma, and rich people who don't want to pay any taxes.

The opponents of a sustainable Earth are more complex, but no less cynical and insidious, and more delusional in their thinking that their money will buy them a seat in the lifeboat. The rest of us must ask, "A 'lifeboat'-? To where?"

Thus, Thom Hartmann's sign-off from his every radio show: "Democracy is not a spectator sport: Tag, you're it!"

Happy activist Earth Day.

STAGECOACH 2022 Music Festival
at the Polo fields in Indio

WATCH LIVE ONLINE starting Apr 29 at 3 pm, at:

https://m.youtube.com/user/stagecoach

Granted, the live webcast is most likely to bring you pop-country Nashvulle acts, instead of the Folk-Americana stars on the two "B" stages where they perform.

Tix TO ATTEND in person are STILL AVAILABLE. The hugely expensive VIP tier tix are all sold-out (they went for $829-$1299) but gen'l adm weekend passes are still available for $399 + fees.

STAGECOACH features plenty of perqs. Most necessary of those is the "Any Line Shuttle Pass." Shuttles offer the easiest transportation to and from a number of local hotels and the far-flung park & ride locations.

A single wristband grants access to the festival for all three (3) days. You may wander from stage to stage and experience other activities including the HONKYTONK DANCE HALL, HALF-PINT HOOTENANNY for kids, delicious BBQ and more.

    Other amenities include:
Ample Shaded Rest Areas; Free Water Refill Stations; Hundreds of Food Vendors; Wide Beer Selection & Full Bars; Extensive Restroom Facilities (incl. Flushing Toilets); Free Phone Charging Stations.

Here are the lineups, by day and stage:

Plus, there's the BUD LIGHT SELTZER SESSIONS:

Friday
2:10pm Reyna Roberts
4:40pm Laci Kaye Booth
5:55pm Travis Denning
DJ Set By Chachi

Saturday
2:10pm Caylee Hammack
4:40pm Mitchell Tenpenny
5:55pm Shy Carter
DJ Set By Disko Cowboy

Sunday
2:00pm Hailey Whitters
4:00pm Flatland Cavalry
5:15pm Lindsay Ell
DJ Set By Tiana Verhagen

Yes, the world-class Budweiser Clydesdales are also there, at the nearby resort.

New to the festival are California’s homegrown COMPTON COWBOYS. They are ten Black riders on horseback whose small ranch is one of the very last in a formerly semi rural area of Compton -- and they are bringing their horses to Stagecoach to tell their story and share in the experience.
You can take in the breathtaking birdseye views from the top of the FERRIS WHEEL. This popular marriage proposal site is busiest at sunset. Take your sweetie for a whirl! Additional cost per ride.
GUY FIERI'S STAGECOACH SMOKEHOUSE runs daily, as does the IKON PASS LOUNGE (accessible to all attendees), and YEEHAW, the spacious and shaded structure in the lobby next to the ferris wheel, it features the Horseshoe Stage (we don't know the lineup on that one.)

"The Eclectic is back! This is definitely one of my favorite things about living in Southern California. At the Eclectic Music Festival in South Pasadena, you get 65 acts on 13 stages, all walkable and all free. Hard to believe, but I swear it's true. I'll be there, moving from venue to venue and clapping like a madman. Take the Metro Gold Line right into the heart of it, or park anywhere on the outskirts of downtown South Pasadena and walk in. See you there?"

Innovative marketing of a fine new tune

"We want to give you EARLY ACCESS to the NEW MUSIC VIDEO!"

That's the word from Bettman & Halpin, the Denver-based roots-acoustic duo of fiddler Stephanie Bettman and mandolin & guitar player Luke Halpin. This time, they take a turn to the 1930s, and like all their previous work, it's fun.

They tell us:

"We are releasing the first single (from the new CD) TOMORROW, April 22!

"We have run our very first 'pre-save' campaign to get as many Spotify and Apple pre-saves as we can. Why you ask?

"Rumor has it, if we can get a few hundred pre-saves and pre-adds, then the algorithm on Spotify and Apple will add our song to various play lists and we will be able to get our music to even more people. This would be so good! We are not quite there yet.

"If you stream music via Spotify or Apple, you can help make this happen. And in return - we're gonna show you the new music video before anyone else gets to see it!"

Here's the link to enjoy the song:

Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival

Coming Sunday, May 15, 2022

One of the longest-running music festivals in the USA, and often recognized as "the finest one-day folk festival anywhere," this one aptly proclaims:

"We have stayed close to our roots and continued to promote bluegrass, folk, and Americana music in its purest form, and launched the careers of many prominent musicians."

It's true. Plus there's all-day acoustic jamming, from which some long-running bands have been formed, relationships have developed from love at first listen, and a whole lot more good has happened.

Our editor should know. He has been an emcee there for quite a fun run. And yep, as the festival returns from forced hiatus, he's back at the iconic Railroad Stage, where he hopes you'll sit a spell, hear some tuneage, and say howdy.

The event is sponsored by its original nonprofit organization and hosted by the National Park Service at its longtime home:

Paramount Ranch in Santa Monica Mountains Nat'l Receration Area, 2903 Cornell Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301

Both events are limited capacity and will sell out, so get tix early. This is a multigenre mix of music and artists. Along with The California Honeydrops, there is also Cimafunk, Thumpasaurus, and more.

"A bustling Kidsville makes this one of the best family-friendly festivals around."

"The action will be concentrated in the Music Bowl with a streamlined schedule of movement medicine in the mornings flowing into music acts in the afternoon and into the night. We’re adding a chill zone on the lake where you’ll find yoga classes, healers and other zen-ness. Stop by the Cafe Stage (next to JavaGogo) for sweet morning sets with your coffee.

"Songwriter Sessions and other intimate workshops can be found on the Boogaloo Stage during the day, then return later for Boogaloo late night JTMF style.

Just announced...

"Rhythm & Roots" Music Festival will return, despite earlier word of the end

This longstanding arts celebration, known for stellar music, happily will return this Labor Day Weekend, September 2, 3, and 4, in Charlestown, Rhode Island.

The event, celebrating its 24th year, marks the end of summer in its original location, Ninigret Park.

The announcement follows the news of unexpected cancellation, originally attributed to health concerns from founder Chuck Wentworth. Subsequently, his events co, Lagniappe, sold the festival to independent, community-minded Hartford, CT-based Goodworks Entertainment. That cleared the way for the festival’s return.

Goodworks brings 20 years of concert and festival production, entering the partnership with a clear goal -- maintaining the same charm that carried the festival through more than two decades.

“Goodworks is a perfect fit to take over the festival…” said Wentworth. “…their underlying philosoph[ies] mirror that of those exemplified by Lagniappe Productions for the past 23 years.”

Musical talent is being selected and remaining logistics finalized. Initial artist lineup and ticketing details will arrive in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, in Oz...

THIS WEEK is the "Tamworth Country Music Festival" 50th Anniversary

Aussie singer-songwriter 8 BALL AITKEN tells us, "I haven't missed a Tamworth Festival for 17 years and I'm playing one show only, THIS SATURDAY APRIL 23, 7 pm."

Crikey. If you find yourself in Australia, mate, go!

8 BALL adds, "The tour calendar is filling up with Australian gigs this year from Tamworth, Boonah, Imbil, Bundaberg, Broadbeach, Brisbane, Mission Beach, Wondecla, Cooktown, Townsville, Newcastle, and many more. I'm also playing a lot of private parties and backyard gigs. Book me (for a gig.... not a parking ticket haha)."

He continues, "My new album 'HEART AND SOUL'  is out now on CD, vinyl and all streaming services. It's #4 in the Australian Blues Charts right now. Have a listen to the new soulful sound.

"I'm also currently finishing off my my next album. It's a banging blues record similar to 'Ice Cream Man' but bigger and fatter. Like an ice cream man on steroids. I recorded most of it in USA before I left and I'm finally finishing it off. I'll be sharing some tracks before too long."

Need an escape from corporate media?

Lee Camp: He's back, if you help

Remember Lee Camp, creative force behind the late, great "Redacted Tonight"-? We've reported recently on the sudden erasure of the archive of that show, and of Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges show, "On Contact." Both have been virtually "disappeared," contrary to our notions of living in a free society with access to everything. (No, this isn't where we stir you up to chant "Free Julian Assange!" But it certainly could be.)

We can report new developments from one of the disappeared.

He brings us news of a "100% people funded" project, with "watchdog documentaries & political comedy w/ Lee Camp, Dan Cohen & Mnar Adley."

Lee Camp tells us:

"Redacted Tonight is gone.

"But I'm announcing a new show! 'The Most Censored News with Lee Camp' will start in less than a month IF the fundraiser is successful. The show is part of the wonderful independent news outlets MintPress and Behind The Headlines.

"But it only happens if they raise enough money in the next few weeks. CLICK HERE to watch the promo video and please help us spread the word!

"Thank you so much for your support.

"Keep fighting,
- Lee"

Editor's note: the promo vid is well-done, thought-provoking stuff. Take seven minutes and watch it.

The back page

Aren't these people tired of having BS called on them?

Her name is Tiffany Dover. She is the Tennessee nurse who fainted just after being vaccinated during a hospital news conference. Anti-vaxx conspiracy zealots proclaimed she was dead, killed by the MRNA Covid-19 vaccine, and went into a frenzy of sharing her demise, globally. When told they were wrong, one of them offered "$100,000 to anyone who can prove she is still alive!"

Well. Several reporters have published irrefutable proof Tiffany Dover is alive and well.* (see below)

But no hundred grand has been forthcoming, to any of those reporters or to Ms. Dover.

Will this stuff never stop?

I had an anti-vax zealot hold a magnet up to my just-vaccinated arm to prove to the world, "The vaccine makes you magnetic!" Of course it doesn't. But that person is still a zealot, still certain I am brimfull of nanocontrol probes, or something. So I certainly did not believe the wackos would pay-up. Did you?

Maybe we should organize a snipe hunt for them, with their own hundred grand prize for the one who brings back the most -- vaccinated snipes, unvaxxed snipes, masked and unmasked snipes, snipes on ventilators, snipes who've lost their sense of taste and smell and have brain fog. You catch 'em, we'll count 'em for you.

How about it, science-deniers?

And the definitive coverage, from the first season of the "Truthers" podcast series:

"Tiffany Dover is alive and well, but she’s stayed silent through it all. And now her story has been hijacked by total strangers trying to make people doubt the safety of the COVID vaccine. In this first season of Truthers, a podcast project about misinformation and conspiracy theories, NBC News reporter Brandy Zadrozny sets out to show what’s true and what isn’t—and how one person’s life became a weapon in a global information war."

It's all there, since we first moved The Guide (with its former name) to Blogspot.

Does that mean you need to find Marty and Doc's DeLorean time machine?

Because, geez, THAT was back when Rin-Tin-Tin hadn't gotten his second "tin" from Tin Pan Alley

... and you watched TV on a big box that bombarded you with non-ionizing radiation from its cathode ray tube if you sat close to it, instead of like nowadays, getting your inescapable non-ionizing radiation from 5g, wherever you sit

... and

... and "the pandemic" meant 1918

... and Rudy Giuliani was "America's Mayor" instead of a babbling portable meltdown of brown ooze

... and "trump" was something that only happened in a card game, instead of being garishly emblazoned on buildings that go bankrupt (before it became a synonym for grifter college, grifter steaks, cultist wackos, deadly violent attempted coups at the Capitol, and banishment from polite society)

... anyway, The Guide has been around a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG time! So you can escape into the musical wonderments of this current edition, AND/OR you can go far enough back to escape whatever is the current lunacy du jour, and explore MANY THOUSANDS of feature stories, musical explorations, band and artist descriptions, and assorted fascinating items we have published through the years for your perusal and enjoyment.

HINT: We often get feedback like this regarding the archive:

"We were talking about how we first met. We disagreed about who was playing that night. We were pretty distracted by each other. So we deep dived in your archive and we found everything about that night!!! It even let us figure out a bunch of our important dates--most of them were musical and it sure was fun to relive those times!!!"
