It's June 25th...
On this day in history, in 1876...
.
Following the increasing numbers of Sioux (Lakota) and Cheyenne Indians who had been deserting the reservations in droves to avoid starvation, the US Army was dispatched to confront and return them to the treaty lands.
.
The Indians had been building strength hunting and eating buffalo, and their numbers had grown. In fact, one of the numerically largest encampments in the tribes' history had amassed on the Little Big Horn River in what is now Montana. But only the Indians who were there knew that.
.
The Indians were jubilant following a time of suffering, need, and want. They feasted. They sang. They danced, long into the nights.
.
Part of their joy came from soundly defeating their pursuing enemy.
.
The U.S. Army had divided itself into three groups. The westernmost of these had already met, and been defeated by, these Indians. The other two Army groups were unaware of that, unaware that the opposite side of their "pincer" movement was no longer in place, but far to the southwest and in full retreat.
.
The Indians were joyfully celebrating that as one of their all-time greatest military victories.
.
Enter Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer -- a Civil War brevet Major General, the "Boy General" and Civil War combat hero -- who was dispatched with his 7th Cavalry to find the Indians in advance of the final remaining Army group.
.
Everyone's greatest concern was that the confronted Indians would do as they had frustratingly done before, and "skedaddle" -- simply dissolving into the landscape where they could not be rounded-up and returned to the reservations.
.
Thus, when Custer's Crow Indian scouts sighted the massive Sioux and Cheyenne encampment, Custer believed he could not wait for the rest of the Army, lest the Indians would vanish.
.
The Crow warned him of the numerical superiority of those he was about to attack. There was no precedent for such numbers by a hunter-gatherer culture. Custer didn't believe it. He could not allow himself to consider it.
.
After an all-night advance -- with scouting forays to determine that no potential ambushes or bypassed camps were ignored -- on the morning of June 25th, Custer sent part of his command directly into one narrow end of the Indian camp, while leading the rest of his cavalry up and around bluffs above the Little Big Horn River, intending to descend on the far end of the camp and cut-off the Indian's retreat.
.
Things did not turn out that way. The first attacking group, under Maj. Marcus Reno, failed because Reno was drunk and he panicked. He lost most of his command in a mêlée of a retreat across the river to a barely defensible position. Custer, unaware of that as he rode behind the bluffs, began his attack through a break in the hills known as Medicine Tail Coulee. The Indians broke off their engagement with Reno's trapped band and concentrated on Custer's cavalry.
.
The attack down Medicine Tail Coulee was broken and beaten back.
.
Custer regrouped on the high ground of the bluffs, a sound military decision. But he was out-generaled by Sioux leader Crazy Horse, who encircled the bluff and attacked Custer's command from behind, adding to the Sioux and Cheyenne attack coming up from the river. .
The cavalrymen shot their horses to use as barricades, hoping to hold-out until Reno's command and the ammunition pack train led by Capt. Benteen arrived -- something they were unaware was impossible.
.
Benteen had violated his orders and was trapped with Reno's desperate command.
.
The end for Custer and his cavalry came as quickly as "the time it takes for a hungry man to eat his dinner," in the words of one Indian survivor of the battle.
.
"Custer's Last Stand" has been romanticized in the Anheuser Busch color print that hung in every saloon in America in the 1880s, and romanticized on through the 1941 Errol Flynn movie, "They Died with Their Boots On," which airs at 5 pm Wednesday on Turner Classic Movies.
.
Custer and the "Last Stand" have been analyzed and often vilified in countless books, novels and other popular entertainment media.
.
And the man and the battle were grotesquely ridiculed in the Dustin Hoffman movie, "Little Big Man."
.
Was Custer crazy? Was he demonic? No, to both. He was an exceptionally talented 19th century man -- as were his adversaries, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse -- and he was a product of the attitudes and understandings and prejudices of his time. Did he have a Native American mistress? Probably. Did he have a loving wife, who, as a widow, made him a posthumous American hero? Absolutely. And certainly, there was hubris in his make-up.

Just as there is in every general of every army today.
.
A caution that still applies from this day in 1876.

Now in its 17th year, the festival has grown to a three day, three night, camping event at beautiful Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, 3 hours north of San Francisco. This marks the 12th year at Black Oak Ranch for the Festival.

Today is "MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES," happening County-Wide -- Friday, June 21, 2013

First up, a traditional FOLK MUSIC EVENT is part of "Make Music Los Angeles" ...

"Sing-A-Long: Social Justice Lyrics, Old Favorite Tunes," is a Folk Music event, 6-8 pm tonight in Eagle Rock (L.A.). It's at 1100 Eagle Vista Dr, in Eagle Rock Park, west of the tennis courts, on the northeast side of the park.
+
It's about "Raising our voices in song, as Ann Porter leads a group sing about our hopes and dreams for a better world. From "ending corporate personhood" and "jobs not jails," to "where have all the flowers gone." Ann hopes this will be the first of many such gatherings. Song sheets provided. Bring a blanket or chair, and goodies to share. (Many songs from the "Raging Grannies' Song Book.")

Organizers of the L.A. County-wide event tout, "This is the first-ever 'National Music Day' in the United States. Modeled after France’s 'Fête de la Musique,' established in 1982, 'National Music Day' unites the harmonious efforts of 514 cities in 110 countries around the world in the single largest global outdoor music celebration, with U.S. cities participating under the name 'Make Music.'

Of course, "Make Music Pasadena" already happened this year, as did the new "Make Music Downey." And while Pasadena's event began a few years as an American pioneer on the same day as France's long-running celebration, American adherents have lately seemed content to make something happen sometime in June, when it was convenient. Today's events return things to the Summer Solstice, the original day.

And the solstice really is important to the tale.
.
Things started in France because it is illegal to busk there: you'll get arrested if you open your guitar case on the sidewalk to attract donations and begin playing. When Francois Mitterrand was elected France's 21st President, French musicians rejoiced because he was one of them, and all foresaw the end of that law.
.
But France's bistro operators lobbied to keep things the way they were. In the end, Mitterrand had to settle for just one day a year when the law would be waived. So he picked the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.
.
He was France's longest-serving president, in office from 1981-1995. Mitterrand died in 1996. But in France today, office productivity will be nil, traffic jams will abound, and sidewalks and plazas and porticoed gardens and every wide spot on every thoroughfare is filled with music makers and celebrating listeners.

It's spread.
.
All over the planet, for one happy day, it's all about participation in the joy of making music, for musicians and listeners alike. And preparing for it produces some unlikely success stories.
.
Phil Brock, Chair of the City of Santa Monica's Recreation and Parks Commission, was strolling along on a Sunday afternoon in Palisades Park when he was drawn to the sounds of live music. It was TEE-M with AL THE BASSMAN. Brock invited them to perform at "Santa Monica Celebrates 'MAKE MUSIC L.A.'" part of what's happening today, June 21st.

Energetic musician TEE-M, aka Tariq Mirza, is a veteran of "World Music Day," and that, alone, makes him one artist notably playing "Make Music Los Angeles" in Santa Monica. For him, it's been an interesting journey.
.
While touring Pakistan in 2007, "Alliance Francaise," the French organization most responsible for the musical day's global dissemination, sponsored TEE-M for "Fête de la Musique" performances in three cities in Pakistan -- Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
.
TEE-M is acutely aware of the singular nature of his participation, saying, "Thanks to the people of France, Pakistan, and now the City of Santa Monica for the honor."
.
But that's not all. The same day Brock invited him to perform, he was discovered by Brazilian TV in the Rehearsal Hall in Santa Monica. The duo were interviewed by Brazilian TV from Sao Paulo, the largest city of Brazil, and 7th largest on the planet.
.
You can hear the song they did on TV when TEE-M performs today, 3:15 to 3:45 pm, on the stage at Santa Monica Blvd and Ocean Ave in Santa Monica. He cautions, "Please come early," and promises, "We'll kick it off with my original song performed for Brazilian TV, 'Senorita Margarita (from North of South America),'" adding, "We dedicate the song to the upcoming Brazilian Olympics."

THE ROYS' “Gypsy Runaway Train,” project continues to build steam. The fast-paced piece was shot over three days “on the road” with THE ROYS. Producer / director Sammy Passamano III (Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Marty Raybon) recalls, “The concept for the clip was to make a ‘thank you’ to the fans, radio stations, media and everyone else who has helped THE ROYS get to this point in their career.” The team made their first stop at WAMU Radio studio in Washington, DC grabbing footage of on-air personality Erin Stamper interviewing the duo. From there it was on to North Carolina traveling on their bus, the Lonesome Whistle. “This song is all about the fans. No glamour shots here, this was all done live!” notes Sammy.

Day Two dawned in Denton, NC at the “DOYLE LAWSON FESTIVAL.” Disaster struck in the form of a power outage during THE ROYS’ first set. “They didn’t miss a beat,” Sammy says. “They stepped right into the crowd, walking down the aisles and proving that they are truly entertainers."

Day Three found the duo in Lowell, Massachusetts near their hometown of Fitchburg. It turned out to be the best day for capturing the spirit of THE ROYS' personalities and the enthusiasm of their fans. One audience member was caught on tape as he danced toward Elaine. While obtaining the fan’s waiver Passamano discovered that this individual had “just missed” appearing in Taylor Swift’s video filmed the day before. “Maybe this will be his lucky break,” Elaine says with a smile.

a) How about learning songs performed in FRENCH CREOLE? “Songs in the Shade of the Flamboyant Tree: French Creole Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes,” is a vividly illustrated picture book and CD with 30 traditional songs originating from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, and Reunion Island. This title comes with a comprehensive description of each song describing its cultural context and origin. All songs were collected by CHANTAL GROSLÉZIAT with musical arrangements by PAUL MINDY. IRIS DeMENT says of that elusive inspirational spark, "I didn't know when or if I'd make another record. I gave up on trying to steer it or force it and decided to just make myself available in my heart and mind as much as I could and leave the rest up to fate."

Sixteen years after the last collection of DeMent songs, that time has come. "Sing The Delta" presents twelve self-penned compositions from an artist whose first three albums established her as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music.
+
DeMent, the last of 14 children, born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, grew up immersed in gospel music and traditional country. She was somewhat of a late bloomer as an artist, writing her first song at age of 25. Her first release, "Infamous Angel," initially issued on Rounder in 1992 before being picked up by Warner Bros., immediately established her as a promising and talented artist.

Its 1994 follow-up, "My Life," earned a GRAMMY nomination in the "Contemporary Folk" category. Her 1996 album, "The Way I Should," addressed political as well as personal themes and earned another GRAMMY nomination.
+
Along the way, several of DeMent's songs became cultural touchstones. "Let The Mystery Be" found its way to MTV "Unplugged" as a duet by DAVID BYRNE and NATALIE MERCHANT. "Our Town" was played over the farewell scene in the series finale of "Northern Exposure." MERLE HAGGARD, who said of DeMent, "She's the best singer I've ever heard," invited her to sit-in as his piano player touring with his legendary band THE STRANGERS. Haggard subsequently covered two of her songs, "No Time To Cry," and the gospel-tinged, "The Shores of Jordan."

DeMent has remained active as an artist, despite the long absence of new CDs in her name. She sang four duets with JOHN PRINE on "In Spite of Ourselves" and had a minor role in the motion picture "Songcatcher," as well as contributing a song to its soundtrack. She continued playing live shows, and in 2004, she recorded an album of gospel songs, "Lifeline," which included her rendition of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." In 2010, the Coen Brothers chose that song for the closing credits when they remade the classic western, "True Grit."

Still, DeMent never took for granted the arrival of an album's worth of new songs. "Songs would come along here and there and I'd go out and sing them for people, but for a long time, I just didn't know what would become of any of them. Then last year, a door kinda opened up, and a handful of songs walked through and a few unfinished ones came together, and I knew I had a record."
+
As with "Lifeline," DeMent is releasing "Sing The Delta" on her own label, Flariella Records. It was recorded at Richard McLaurin's House of David studio in Nashville with co-producers Richard Bennett and Bo Ramsey, with a supporting cast that included Bryan Owings on drums, Dave Jacques on bass, Al Perkins on pedal steel, and Reese Wynans on B3 organ, as well as horn players Jim Hoke and Steve Herman on a couple of numbers.

Of the time it took, DeMent says, "Some of these songs I've had around awhile, but I needed time to grow into them. I guess you could say I just wasn't ready to deliver them in the way that they deserved. I'm glad I waited. It's taught me to surrender… to trust the natural flow and order of things and not worry about it."
+
It's an instinct she's learned to trust ever since she first sat down to write her first couple of songs at age 25 and found "Our Town" spilling out onto the page. "It was like somebody walked right into that room and said, 'There you have it, Iris' — I knew then and there that I had gotten my calling," she relates.
+
She continues, "I had always been taught in church that God, or spirit, if you will, calls us to a life work. I got mine that day. Whether I write one song a year or ten, it doesn't matter. It's a 'knowing' that I have that hasn't left me since that day. That's what I check-in with, and as long as that's there,the rest of it doesn't matter. The time it takes is just the time it takes."

RT N' THE 44s (outside in the courtyard). They are a self-descrobed "Folk Noir band" created by singer-songwriter RT VALINE. Founded in 2009, the band originated in Los Angeles, alongside local bands Leslie and the Badgers,Spindrift, Gwendolyn , and Ruthann Friedman.

Every one of them has a claim to something unique, but this band has "unique" cornerned. Not since JOE CRAVEN have we seen musicians using an array of instruments crafted from tin, 2x4's and salvaged parts. RT simply says that RT N' THE 44s was born out of "an attempt to make listenable music from junk."
+
They have been described as a "vintage country band with dark obsessions." The band is often seen busking at various locations throughout Los Angeles and Pasadena in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston.
+
As members of the "New L.A. FOLKFEST," the band has performed with John C. Reilly, Tom Brosseau, T-Model Ford, and Red Simpson, among other notable acts. RT N' THE 44s performs annually at The "ROOTS ROADHOUSE FESTIVAL" and at the Autry National Center.

The band has recorded three full-length albums for the independent label Rabid Rabbit Records, and has been featured "live in studio" on KUCI's "Freedom Radio" program.

WALLY BARNICK was not quite a founding member of the Cache Valley Drifters, but he goes back a long ways with that band, which still performs when they can all get together. Wally plays a good solid bass and is usually the main spokesman for the group on stage. He's got a friendly, easy-going style that extends into his singing that is just perfect for both their up-tempo songs and country-tinged songs like “Mr. Lonely's Bar and Grill” from the new CD.

MIKE MULLIns was a member of of the old Phil Salazar Band, which morphed into the Acousticats, and then he joined the Cache Valley Drifters years ago. He is equally known for mandolin and guitar wizardry, with which he can play a strong supporting role, or step out front and dazzle an audience. He's also a very fine singer, and he's written a few terrific songs. Rex and Nick add, “We wish he would do more songwriting!”

KENNY BLACKWELL was a founding member of the Laurel Canyon Ramblers on mandolin, along with Herb Pederson, Byron Berline, Bill Bryson, and a very fine cast. That group dazzled and evolved over the years, and the series’ producers say they “tried heroically to get them to Caltech, but could never quite land them.” Along with his superb mandolin, Kenny is a fine singer and great guitarist as well. The interchange between Mike's and Kenny's playing is a joy to behold.

HAY DUDES' first and only CD, released late in 2012, opens with their version of Joe Ely's “All Just to Get to You, a lively number with Kenny singing lead. Wally sings lead on Lefty Frizell's classic, “That's the Way Love Goes,” and then you're treated to Kenny's mandolin-led instrumental, “Flatland Ramble,” a tune he wrote with the Laurel Canyon Ramblers but reworked here and sounds better than ever. Then Mike Mullins sings a wonderful version of David Mallett's “Ballad of St. Ann'e Reel,” followed by his own “No MSG Please,” a great guitar-led instrumental he first did in the Acousticats / early Cache Valley Drifter days. After that, there's a beautifully pure modern gospel song, written by Alan Thornhill, “Cheer Up My Brother.” These guys have a lot of variety.

THE ROYS' “Gypsy Runaway Train,” project continues to build steam. The fast-paced piece was shot over three days “on the road” with THE ROYS. Producer / director Sammy Passamano III (Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Marty Raybon) recalls, “The concept for the clip was to make a ‘thank you’ to the fans, radio stations, media and everyone else who has helped THE ROYS get to this point in their career.” The team made their first stop at WAMU Radio studio in Washington, DC grabbing footage of on-air personality Erin Stamper interviewing the duo. From there it was on to North Carolina traveling on their bus, the Lonesome Whistle. “This song is all about the fans. No glamour shots here, this was all done live!” notes Sammy.

Day Two dawned in Denton, NC at the “DOYLE LAWSON FESTIVAL.” Disaster struck in the form of a power outage during THE ROYS’ first set. “They didn’t miss a beat,” Sammy says. “They stepped right into the crowd, walking down the aisles and proving that they are truly entertainers."
+
Day Three found the duo in Lowell, Massachusetts near their hometown of Fitchburg. It turned out to be the best day for capturing the spirit of THE ROYS' personalities and the enthusiasm of their fans. One audience member was caught on tape as he danced toward Elaine. While obtaining the fan’s waiver Passamano discovered that this individual had “just missed” appearing in Taylor Swift’s video filmed the day before. “Maybe this will be his lucky break,” Elaine says with a smile.

It’s “NATIONAL SUMMER LEARNING DAY” and it has some musical dimensions. It's a time to champion summer learning for youth with events that focus on sustaining academic success throughout the summer. Here’s a recommended reading list of three featured titles:

a) How about learning songs performed in FRENCH CREOLE? “Songs in the Shade of the Flamboyant Tree: French Creole Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes,” is a vividly illustrated picture book and CD with 30 traditional songs originating from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, and Reunion Island. This title comes with a comprehensive description of each song describing its cultural context and origin. All songs were collected by CHANTAL GROSLÉZIAT with musical arrangements by PAUL MINDY. The gorgeous illustrations were created by LAURENT CORVAISIER.

b) For kids about to start school for the first time, how about giving them a Summertime tutorial in their ABC's? Kids can flip through “W is for Wapiti!” An Alphabet Songbook to learn the building blocks of language while enjoying 24 alphabet songs designed to help with letter-word association. IRIS DeMENT says of that elusive inspirational spark, "I didn't know when or if I'd make another record. I gave up on trying to steer it or force it and decided to just make myself available in my heart and mind as much as I could and leave the rest up to fate."

Sixteen years after the last collection of DeMent songs, that time has come. "Sing The Delta" presents twelve self-penned compositions from an artist whose first three albums established her as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music.

DeMent, the last of 14 children, born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, grew up immersed in gospel music and traditional country. She was somewhat of a late bloomer as an artist, writing her first song at age of 25. Her first release, "Infamous Angel," initially issued on Rounder in 1992 before being picked up by Warner Bros., immediately established her as a promising and talented artist.

Its 1994 follow-up, "My Life," earned a GRAMMY nomination in the "Contemporary Folk" category. Her 1996 album, "The Way I Should," addressed political as well as personal themes and earned another GRAMMY nomination.
+
Along the way, several of DeMent's songs became cultural touchstones. "Let The Mystery Be" found its way to MTV "Unplugged" as a duet by DAVID BYRNE and NATALIE MERCHANT. "Our Town" was played over the farewell scene in the series finale of "Northern Exposure." MERLE HAGGARD, who said of DeMent, "She's the best singer I've ever heard," invited her to sit-in as his piano player touring with his legendary band THE STRANGERS. Haggard subsequently covered two of her songs, "No Time To Cry," and the gospel-tinged, "The Shores of Jordan."

DeMent has remained active as an artist, despite the long absence of new CDs in her name. She sang four duets with JOHN PRINE on "In Spite of Ourselves" and had a minor role in the motion picture "Songcatcher," as well as contributing a song to its soundtrack. She continued playing live shows, and in 2004, she recorded an album of gospel songs, "Lifeline," which included her rendition of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." In 2010, the Coen Brothers chose that song for the closing credits when they remade the classic western, "True Grit."

Still, DeMent never took for granted the arrival of an album's worth of new songs. "Songs would come along here and there and I'd go out and sing them for people, but for a long time, I just didn't know what would become of any of them. Then last year, a door kinda opened up, and a handful of songs walked through and a few unfinished ones came together, and I knew I had a record."

As with "Lifeline," DeMent is releasing "Sing The Delta" on her own label, Flariella Records. It was recorded at Richard McLaurin's House of David studio in Nashville with co-producers Richard Bennett and Bo Ramsey, with a supporting cast that included Bryan Owings on drums, Dave Jacques on bass, Al Perkins on pedal steel, and Reese Wynans on B3 organ, as well as horn players Jim Hoke and Steve Herman on a couple of numbers.

Of the time it took, DeMent says, "Some of these songs I've had around awhile, but I needed time to grow into them. I guess you could say I just wasn't ready to deliver them in the way that they deserved. I'm glad I waited. It's taught me to surrender… to trust the natural flow and order of things and not worry about it."

It's an instinct she's learned to trust ever since she first sat down to write her first couple of songs at age 25 and found "Our Town" spilling out onto the page. "It was like somebody walked right into that room and said, 'There you have it, Iris' — I knew then and there that I had gotten my calling," she relates.

She continues, "I had always been taught in church that God, or spirit, if you will, calls us to a life work. I got mine that day. Whether I write one song a year or ten, it doesn't matter. It's a 'knowing' that I have that hasn't left me since that day. That's what I check-in with, and as long as that's there,the rest of it doesn't matter. The time it takes is just the time it takes."

RT N' THE 44s (outside in the courtyard). They are a self-descrobed "Folk Noir band" created by singer-songwriter RT VALINE. Founded in 2009, the band originated in Los Angeles, alongside local bands Leslie and the Badgers,Spindrift, Gwendolyn , and Ruthann Friedman.

Every one of them has a claim to something unique, but this band has "unique" cornerned. Not since JOE CRAVEN have we seen musicians using an array of instruments crafted from tin, 2x4's and salvaged parts. RT simply says that RT N' THE 44s was born out of "an attempt to make listenable music from junk."

They have been described as a "vintage country band with dark obsessions." The band is often seen busking at various locations throughout Los Angeles and Pasadena in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston.

As members of the "New L.A. FOLKFEST," the band has performed with John C. Reilly, Tom Brosseau, T-Model Ford, and Red Simpson, among other notable acts. RT N' THE 44s performs annually at The "ROOTS ROADHOUSE FESTIVAL" and at the Autry National Center.

The band has recorded three full-length albums for the independent label Rabid Rabbit Records, and has been featured "live in studio" on KUCI's "Freedom Radio" program.

WALLY BARNICK was not quite a founding member of the Cache Valley Drifters, but he goes back a long ways with that band, which still performs when they can all get together. Wally plays a good solid bass and is usually the main spokesman for the group on stage. He's got a friendly, easy-going style that extends into his singing that is just perfect for both their up-tempo songs and country-tinged songs like “Mr. Lonely's Bar and Grill” from the new CD.

MIKE MULLIns was a member of of the old Phil Salazar Band, which morphed into the Acousticats, and then he joined the Cache Valley Drifters years ago. He is equally known for mandolin and guitar wizardry, with which he can play a strong supporting role, or step out front and dazzle an audience. He's also a very fine singer, and he's written a few terrific songs. Rex and Nick add, “We wish he would do more songwriting!”

KENNY BLACKWELL was a founding member of the Laurel Canyon Ramblers on mandolin, along with Herb Pederson, Byron Berline, Bill Bryson, and a very fine cast. That group dazzled and evolved over the years, and the series’ producers say they “tried heroically to get them to Caltech, but could never quite land them.” Along with his superb mandolin, Kenny is a fine singer and great guitarist as well. The interchange between Mike's and Kenny's playing is a joy to behold.

HAY DUDES' first and only CD, released late in 2012, opens with their version of Joe Ely's “All Just to Get to You, a lively number with Kenny singing lead. Wally sings lead on Lefty Frizell's classic, “That's the Way Love Goes,” and then you're treated to Kenny's mandolin-led instrumental, “Flatland Ramble,” a tune he wrote with the Laurel Canyon Ramblers but reworked here and sounds better than ever. Then Mike Mullins sings a wonderful version of David Mallett's “Ballad of St. Ann'e Reel,” followed by his own “No MSG Please,” a great guitar-led instrumental he first did in the Acousticats / early Cache Valley Drifter days. After that, there's a beautifully pure modern gospel song, written by Alan Thornhill, “Cheer Up My Brother.” These guys have a lot of variety.

Acclaimed as a popular family event, the Long Beach Bayou & Blues Festival brings both the party atmosphere and the food delicacies of a New Orleans Mardi Gras to Rainbow Lagoon Park.

There are two stages of music, one devoted to the blues, the other with zydeco and Cajun music. There's continuous dancing on a large tent-canopy covered wooden dance floor, and quick and easy dance instruction for all ages

The festival boasts a festive costumed Mardi Gras parade led each day by the New Orleans Traditional Jazz Band, and a colorful French Quarter marketplace with gumbo, crawfish etoufee, hush puppies, red beans and rice and other Cajun & Creole delicacies, plus coffees and desserts. With crawfish and watermelon eating contests for the whole family, the Kids' Bayou Tent has extensive children's activities that include making costumes, masks and umbrellas for the Mardi Gras parade, arts and crafts, storytelling, magic, sing-a-longs, kids' shows, and more. Plus, the Teen Corner has games and activities for older kids.

Make Music Los Angeles is an all-day celebration of musical creativity that will take place throughout the entire county of Los Angeles. Many of the city’s sidewalks, parks, community gardens, and other venues will become the backdrop or stage for free concerts.

MMLA becomes a member of a global network of over 460 cities including New York, Pasadena, Denver, Palo Alto, Vancouver, Chicago, and 110 countries, in this tuneful celebration of the summer solstice. The concerts are free to the public.
