THE WEEKEND WHOLE SHEBANG, Sat & Sun, Oct 6 & 7, 2012

.
All the Southern Cal acoustic and Americana music events and festivals are here for you, along with a surprise:
.
Greetings from GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN(!) where the 3-week long ARTPRIZE FESTIVAL ends this Sunday, on a weekend that includes the local PULASKI FESTIVAL and the RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL. Yep, that’s life this weekend, in Michigan, where incredibly friendly low-stress Wolverine people abound and young women all have 100 Watt smiles, and where autumn colors are beginning to display in luxuriant oranges and yellows and reds.
+
Speaking of red, the RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL in Cedar Springs Michigan has the coolest logo -- a pair of red longjohns on a clothesline -- and it has MOSSY MORAN performing Irish folk music on Saturday. But it also has the “Judgment Day Pullers,” aboard altered garden tractors dragging things, and, er, something called the “2nd annual Cornhole Tournament.” We won’t even ask. It must be a Michigan thing, like Minnesotans and their icehole fishing…
+
Meanwhile, the 40th annual PULASKI DAYS in Grand Rapids celebrates a Revolutionary War hero (he was a general, on our side) and it’s a big deal for folks of Polish extraction, because the general was born in Poland. Food is central to this one, along with performances from FREEDIE Z & HIS BUTTON BOX, and ANDY GALAS with THE GRABINSKI BAND, and GERRY KAMINSKI’S POLKA NETWORK, and THE GRAND RIVER BIG “POLKA” BAND, and a bunch more. (How do you say “I’ll have a kielbasa and brewski” in Polish?)
+
The biggie here is ARTPRIZE. It began September 17 and concludes October 7, with 1,517 entries in 161 venues, spread over (or is it packed into) more than 3 square miles of Grand Rapids. Participants -- thousands and thousands of ’em -- visit galleries and experience all sorts of artsy-fartsy and lively events and concerts and exhibitions in those thirteen-dozen places, and vote to determine winners of the Artprizes. Of course, they provide mundo economic stimulus by noshing, imbibing, perusing and selecting artworks and souvenirs and things to adorn their ears and walls, and generally having uber good times. Along the way, enough of them take time to vote that the prizes are both coveted and respected. Sounds like a model for other cities arts communities, if we’ve ever seen one…

1) Today’s FESTIVALS…
.
Sat, Oct 6; Fri-Sun, Oct 5-7, FESTIVAL, in San Francisco:
The 12th annual “HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL” is now the nation’s largest music festival, and the largest FREE music festival. It takes-over Hellman Hollow and Lindley & Mark Meadows in Golden Gate Park in the City by the Bay with multiple stages and more roots-americana music than you can comprehend.
+
Egads! You’ll need one of those jet-powered flying backpacks. Spread across the stages here are THE DEL McCOURY BAND, JERRY DOUGLAS, STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES, O’BRIEN PARTY OF 7, RALPH STANLEY & THE CLINCH MOUNTAIN BOYS, DWIGHT YOAKUM, PETER ROWAN, ELVIS COSTELLO SOLO, LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS, BUDDY MILLER, CHUCK PROPHET & THE MISSION EXPRESS, NICK LOWE, PATTI SMITH, ROBERT EARL KEEN, THE MILK CARTON KIDS, HEARTLESS BASTARDS, SON VOLT, AMANDA SHAW & THE CUTE GUYS, THE SOUL REBELS, TODD SNIDER, THE TIME JUMPERS, SARA WATKINS, PATTY GRIFFIN, CHUCK MEAD & HIS GRASSY KNOLL BOYS, THE WANDERING, MIKE FARRIS & THE ROSELAND RHYTHM REVIEW, LITTLE GREEN CARDS, and a couple dozen more, with more to come.
+
Yep, amazing, astonishing, and a few hundred other good superlatives all apply. Main thing you need to do is make arrangements for a place to stay. And then send a message to the boneheads who run all the big record labels to tell them you don’t give a rat’s behind for the sh-thump-thud / revolving-door-rehab / pop-tart-du-jour stuff they peddle, but the LARGEST music event in the country books people you will travel to see and whose recordings you DO buy.
+
The festival’s website, www.strictlybluegrass.com, lets you play a “listen and identify” guessing game of who’s performing this year, and it reveals more artists and bands continually.

2-11 pm 14th annual “EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL” brings a performance by TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT plus over 70 more bands on 11 stages. There’s a rich lineup of genres, on three stages, with Jo Jo Reed and the Happy Hill Zydeco Band, Bonne Musique Zydeco, David Sousa and the Zydeco Mudbugs, all on the Louisiana Bayou Music Stage. Plus, on the other two stages, accordion-based jazz, gypsy folk, Italian, Latin, German and Bavarian. There’s a Mardi Gras-style parade, dance lessons and exhibitions in a variety of styles, an accordion repair workshop, accordion lessons, an “Accordion Road Show” for free appraisals, a “Mobile Accordion Jam,” along with mask making, strolling entertainment, gourmet food trucks, other activities, and that weird festival de rigueur ritual of face painting.

Dave tells us, “I don't want to scare you, but there is some chance that this could be the very last Julie's Joint show. They've been going through some changes and are considering a move. It might happen and it might not. But if it does, you won't want to have missed the last show. Just a thought. But at any rate, these are really fun evenings. Julie and John are awesome hosts. The food is always terrific. People bring things, and Julie usually does her famous pulled-pork sandwiches. And the song-circles afterward are legendary. Literally, people have met and fallen in love at these things. I'm not exaggerating (for a change). Anyway, I have never heard anything but high praise from somebody who has been to a Julie's Joint show. Come hungry. Pull that old guitar out of the closet and dust off your singing voice. We'll be looking forward to seeing you.”

DALA is that marvelous young female acoustic guitar-guitar and guitar-piano vocal harmony duo from Canada, who starred in the PBS “Girls from the North Country” docu-performance special. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, AMANDA WALTHER’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with SHEILA CARABINE’s velvety alto to create their trademark lush harmonies. Influenced by artists that include fellow Canadians JONI MITCHELL and NEIL YOUNG, and by BOB DYLAN, their joy in performing is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans. (They are GUIDE favorites!)

1) Today’s FESTIVALS…
.
Sun, Oct 7; Sat, Oct 6; Fri-Sun, Oct 5-7, FESTIVAL, in San Francisco:
