Does "Today's" TV Performance Hint at Changes in Nashville Country?

.
.
Monday morning, June 3, on TV:
10-11 am JO DEE MESSINA returns to NBC’s “Today Show." And this about more than yet another nominally Nashville-country musical appearance.
+
She’ll perform her new song, “A Woman’s Rant,” and discuss her Kickstarter campaign, where fans get unique rewards and experiences as backers of her upcoming album. (What? a Kickstarter campaign? In Nashville? Wait for it.)
+
A powerful and upbeat song about the challenges that mothers and working moms face in juggling their responsibilities, “A Woman’s Rant” will appear on her new fan-funded album.
+
FAN-FUNDED album? By a Nashville-country star? What's going on here?
+
The multi-platinum, award-winning country singer-songwriter has garnered a reputation for being fiercely independent, honest, determined and driven, and that now figures in a new path with her “My time. Our music.” campaign.
+
Indie artists have certainly been down this road. It is not the path taken by those who have found Nashville commercial country success.
+
Nonetheless, Jo Dee is enthusiastic. “I’m psyched to get back to New York City and see my friends Kathie Lee and Hoda, and share with them some new Music,” says Jo Dee.
+
Is there a hint in here that she is looking to do something other than stock, soundalike, fahke te-wang, wallowing-in-dysfunctional-relationships Nashville country?
+
She says, “Now that I'm free to make whatever project I want, I wanted to do something WITH the people as well as FOR them. This is such a fun project with unique rewards for the backers. It lets me make the record I want with the involvement of the public. They are a part of the process, along every step.”
+
Everything is connected to everything else. Who'd have thought that indie music paradigms would turn-up in the tool kit of a country star?
