√  NAMM WITHOUT A BADGE? THERE ARE GREAT CONCERTS, MANY OF THEM FREE

Okay, first things first. You CAN enjoy free stage shows – more than ever before – at NAMM, WITHOUT a badge. But…

You need to park someplace else. Seriously. Exhibitors, buyers for music stores, and others who have badges have spent a lot of money to be here. You must not take parking they need. You mustn’t. Park at Downtown Disney and walk. Better yet, park at the Amtrak commuter lot at Anaheim Stadium and ride the OC Transit bus to the Anaheim Convention Center. Or park free on a side street of Katella, three or four miles away and ride the transit bus. But do not park at the Convention Center: if you do, NAMM participants will complain they cannot park, and all the free and accessible music will disappear next year.

That said, JONNY LANG plays a FREE show tonight on the NAMM GoPro Stage at 6 pm, in the plaza between the Anaheim Marriott and Anaheim Hilton, in front of the Convention Center.

There’s more live music on the other FREE and accessible outdoor stage, adjacent to the Convention Center, closer to Katella Avenue.

In addition, there are stages in the lobbies of both those hotels, and various performances happen on both, all free and accessible to the public.

On Saturday, Aussie guitar star
♪  LLOYD SPIEGEL plays a free show on the Marriott Lobby Stage at 3:15 pm. (Badged attendees can catch him in the Cole Clark Guitars booth.)

Other concerts, like MURIEL ANDERSEN’S signature “ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT” concert, require tickets – and there are not a lot of them available, so start searching for them online right away. See the next three News Features for more of what you can do at NAMM without a badge. Just remember, you to park someplace else!

√  NAMM EVENT ON FRIDAY HONORS WOMEN IN MUSIC; TIX AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC

On Friday, January 24, the Women’s International Music Network (The WiMN) present a ticketed concert at the “She Rocks Awards,” with performances by THE COMMAND SISTERS, GABY MORENO, and MALINA MOYE, at the awards event honoring the music industry’s female leaders, 8:30-10 am at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel (Ballroom E),

The Layfayette, California-based WiMN are the producers of the 2014 “She Rocks Awards,” and these are “exclusive performances” from these female artists. The awards honor women who stand out in the music industry

These renowned artists will join in celebrating the achievements of the 2014 She Rocks Awards honorees, who include: drum and percussion icon Sheila E; Janie L. Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix LLC, Dinah Gretsch, Executive Vice President/CFO of the Gretsch Company; celebrated Seymour Duncan pickup winder Maricela "MJ" Juarez; Musicians Institute senior guitar faculty member and Vice President Beth Marlis; West Music Company CEO Robin Walenta; and Grammy-award winning artist Gaby Moreno.

At the ripe ages of 12 and 15, siblings The Command Sisters have already landed a publishing deal out of Nashville. Averaging over 100 shows a year, the duo is stealing hearts across the country with their genre-breaking “country with soul” sound.

Fresh off the heels of winning a Latin Grammy for “Best New Artist,” the She Rocks Awards are delighted to feature Gaby Moreno as both an artist performer and award honoree. Born and raised in Guatemala City, Moreno’s versatile, soulful voice helped her to win the “John Lennon Songwriting Contest Song of the Year” (the first Latin American to do so) as well as an Emmy nomination for writing NBC's “Parks and Recreation” theme song. In addition, Moreno has toured with Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco and more recently, Hugh Laurie.

Flipping a Fender Stratocaster upside-down, acclaimed guitarist Malina Moye fills a void in the entertainment industry. Described as a modern day renaissance woman, she’s one of the few artists able to successfully straddle both the rock and soul genres. Dubbed as the “female Jimi Hendrix” by Guitar World, Moye is carving out her own lane in today’s music scene. Most recently, Moye released "Kyotic, " a new single featuring Bootsy Collins.

The 2014 She Rocks Awards are in their second year. The first, a year ago, honored guitarist Orianthi, songwriter / producer Holly Knight, Mary Peavey of Peavey Electronics, Laura Taylor of Guitar Center, Pauline France of Fender Musical Instruments, Carla Black of Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women (MEOW) and Tish Ciravolo of Daisy Rock Guitars. Photos and footage from the 2013 awards can be viewed at www.thewimn.com/2013-she-rocks-awards/.

The second annual She Rocks Awards will include a catered breakfast, awards ceremony, live performances, a silent auction and more. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the “Girls Rock Camp Alliance,” aiding the organization in empowering girls and women in Girls Rock Camp programs throughout the world.

The show has two halves, one acoustic, one electric.

Obviously, this is a big lineup of luminaries. And Muriel Andersen has a solid place among them.

The late, great LES PAUL called Muriel “Just one hell of a great player …a great personality and what I like is the touch that Muriel has on the guitar, the way she plays it like we all wish to play.”

The first and only woman to win the Fingerstyle Championship title, Muriel Anderson is widely respected as one of the foremost guitarists in the world. Her unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, amazing audiences with her technique and endearing them with her sense of humor. One minute launching into a Beatles tune and the next, Chopin's Minute Waltz, her facility across the genres of folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists around the globe.

Muriel’s CD, “Wildcat” celebrates her depth as a guitarist, composer, and vocalist, and her “Harp Guitar Christmas” has already received widespread acclaim. Muriel Anderson has also released seven instrumental CD's, three videos/DVD’s, and guitar books published by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Zen-On Japan. Her compositions include commissioned classical works for the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and Vox Caelestis Womens Choir, and she has a composition in Woody Allen’s recent film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Muriel’s “Heartstrings” recording traveled as far as outer space, accompanying the astronauts on a space shuttle mission. Touring in the USA and internationally year round, her music brings smiles and promotes understanding worldwide.

Another guitar great, the late CHET ATKINS, said, "Acoustic guitarist Muriel Anderson... has justifiably gained a reputation as one of the world's best, and most versatile, guitar instrumentalists."

The Chicago Tribune wrote, “Muriel Anderson is a good friend and a great guitarist. She deserves National Recognition.”

She’ll surely get more of that Saturday night.

√  ANDY McKEE IS PLAYING NAMM

Among the many guitar greats playing roles at NAMM, one to catch is acclaimed acoustic guitarist Andy McKee. In the middle of a slate of U.S. dates stretching well into 2014, the master fingerstyle player is making a big return to the public eye with massive worldwide touring and the release of his first new music since 2010’s acclaimed album “Joyland.” The Guide carried notice of his tour stop in Malibu on Friday, January 10th for a show at The Smothers Theater at Pepperdine University.

Now NAMM attendees can see him in action. Andy McKee is one of the world’s finest solo acoustic guitarists and his crossover success to more than 150 million YouTube viewers underscores his emergence as one of the most important and popular artists to surface in years. To fans of virtuoso musicianship it is Andy’s attention to song structure and melodic content that elevates him above the rest. To fans of popular music Andy entertains both the eye and the ear as he magically transforms the steel string guitar into full orchestra via his use of altered tunings, tapping, partial capos, percussive hits and a signature two-handed technique.

Andy has been featured as a cover story in both Acoustic Guitar Magazine in the U.S. and Acoustic Magazine in the UK, and is also the figurehead of the unique Guitar Masters tours which have traveled the world over the past three years.

Andy continues to challenge himself. Following a recent string of Australian shows performing alongside living-legend Prince – yes THAT Prince, who had personally requested Andy to join his band for the concerts – and a planned series of new releases on deck, Andy McKee is happily out there, expanding his own horizons and presenting a reinvention of himself in 2014.

√  TODAY AT NAMM: HONORS FOR SMOKEY ROBINSON

Motown legend Smokey Robinson received NAMM’s highest honor, the “Music for Life” award, at the NAMM Show’s opening “Breakfast of Champions” this morning in Anaheim.

Recognized for his five decades of enduring influence in the world of popular music and his long standing as one of the founders of the Motown dynasty, Smokey Robinson delivered thoughtful remarks in an interview by NAMM CEO Joe Lamond.

Lamond welcomed the beloved writer, producer, and performer, whom Bob Dylan once called “America’s greatest living poet.” Lamond praised the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s generosity in embracing emerging musicians, his genuine enthusiasm for new musical styles, and his enduring status as an icon that paved the way for so many contemporary artists.

“So much of what we at NAMM stand for is exemplified in the career and life of the legendary Smokey Robinson,” Lamond said, continuing, “His influence on musicians, producers, writers and even sound engineers continues to be profoundly felt today. He is a symbol of creativity and a beacon of inspiration to many. His music is authentic and emotionally real, and it is his ability to touch so many people with this talent that makes Smokey Robinson a true ambassador for music.”

NAMM’s “Music for Life” award recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate support for and exemplify NAMM’s vision that the joy of making music is a precious element of daily living for everyone. Past recipients have included Stevie Wonder, Yoko Ono, Quincy Jones, as well as members of Congress, governors, business leaders, the Smithsonian, and Sesame Workshop.

A native of Detroit, Robinson found success early on as a founding member of The Miracles. The group’s success, and Robinson’s considerable vision and influence, helped Berry Gordy establish Motown Records as a tidal force in the world of popular music. As vice president of Motown Records, Robinson served as in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter, penning hits for the Miracles as well as acting as writer and producer for The Temptations, Mary Wells, Rick James, Marvin Gaye and others. His accomplishments set the stage for an entire genre of dynamic performers and led a musical revolution that defined the sound of an era.

In 2006, Robinson was selected to be a Kennedy Center Honoree for his contributions to the arts and American culture. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, has earned a GRAMMY Legend Award and been honored with a National Medal of The Arts. Robinson will release a duets LP in 2014, which will include a line-up of all-star duet partners performing some of his most beloved classic songs with him.

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues.
