There are two different shows, different acts, at this venue today / tonight, and both are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED; see 7 pm listing, too.
Bob Stane says, “A fave with the Caltech and JPL crowd. Good taste abounds. A special act. Third time here. Always sells out. Big bunch of fans in this area. Coming from the East. Then back again. Your only chance.”
We'll add that they have been favorites with the California Traditional Music Society's Summer Solstice Festival goers since the days when that festival was at Cal State Northridge.
CATHY BARTON AND DAVE PARA are a versatile duo from way out in Missouri performing a variety of traditional and original folk music with harmonious vocals and powerful mastery of five-string banjo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, autoharp and some found instruments just to keep your attention. Cathy and Dave are “delighted to return to The Coffee Gallery after having way too good of a time a year ago.”
Their “acoustic arsenal of democracy” includes five-string banjo, guitar, hammered dulcimer, Autoharp and some found instruments just to keep the audience's attention. Their repertoire is comprised of traditional and contemporary American folk music, featuring tunes and songs they have collected from fiddlers and singers in their home region of Missouri and the Ozarks.
While they may never get the childhood echoes of Peter, Paul and Mary out of their harmony vocals, Cathy and Dave can lay down a solid old-time sound. The late Roy Acuff once called Cathy his favorite banjo player. Here's a video from the 1980s that suggests why: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC0ALk_w8g0
2009 was the year of "Gumbo Bottoms: A Big Muddy Musical" for which Cathy wrote the songs and both Dave and Cathy played in the pit band for the show's premier and tour dates. http://gumbobottomsmusical.com. She says, “Wish the show had a year-long run because it was a real treat to do. But a cruise along the coast of Maine helped make up for it.” Tix, $18.

Sun, Oct 2:
7 pm SIMON LYNGE at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
He has just completed a European tour with EMMYLOU HARRIS and played the prestigious Glastonbury Festival, the first Greenlander to do so.
World-renowned talents have come to work with him on his recording. Renowned musicians joined him in studio including bass-player LEE SKLAR (James Taylor, Jackson Browne), guitarist SHANE FONTAYNE (Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon), drummer JAY BELLEROSE (Marc Cohen, Madeliene Peyroux), and bassist FREEBO (Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, CSN). In rather prestigious circles the brilliance of Simon’s work on his debut album “The Future” is already being compared to the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake and other uncommonly gifted artists.
SIMON LYNGE has the smoothest singing voice you've ever heard. He combines fine musical sensibilities with an outlook and sense of spirituality that derives from his Norse / Inuit roots, having been raised in Greenland and Denmark.
But don't let any of that fool you. He speaks English and writes songs in English with far more aplomb than several dozen successful songwriters who were born here.
His debut album on London based Lo Max Records, is titled “The Future.”
It was named “Album of the Week” earlier this year by MDR (radio and TV in Germany). It introduces Simon as a fully-formed contender for major success. It was recorded at Bright Orange Studios in Los Angeles with co-producers Matt Forger (Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney) and Jon Mattox (The Young Dubliners).
“The Future” is a musical beauty worthy of the wide audience it is finding after entering the BBC UK charts at #22 one day after the June 7, 2010 release. It also hit #1 on the Amazon.com UK Rock charts and #14 on iTunes. German Rolling Stone just did a two page feature on his new CD. A year later, the new single “If You Go” has been added to BBC Radio 2, the largest radio station in the UK. Tix, $15.

Mon, Oct 3:
8 pm BUTCH HANCOCK (from THE FLATLANDERS), the bigtime Austin-based Americana star, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Rolling Stone magazine describes Butch Hancock as "a raspy-voiced West Texas mystic with an equal affinity for romantic border balladry and Zen paradox."
World-traveling troubadour BUTCH HANCOCK hails from the same Lubbock, Texas, music scene that gave the world JOE ELY and JIMMIE DALE GILMORE, his equally eclectic colleagues in THE FLATLANDERS.
In 2010, he picked up something he'd done back in 1990, and the story is fun. Hancock and more than two dozen musician friends staged a 1990 event worthy of the Guinness Book of World Records: calling it “No Two Alike,” they played six straight nights of live performances in Austin's famed Cactus Café, recording 140 of his original songs without repeating a single song. He released the staggering output later in the year as the “No Two Alike Tape of the Month club.”
More remarkably, twenty years later, In 2010, Butch reprised the event. This time he titled it “No Two More Alike.” Fans from as far as Tokyo were there, representing a measure of the devotion Hancock’s singular compositions inspire.
Butch is one of contemporary music's most entertaining raconteurs and his tunes evoke mystical visions of wind-swept dry-plains and his lyrics are profoundly imaginative, often displaying for his listeners the miracles that occur in the ordinary through creative irony and metaphors. This is a show that shouldn’t be missed.
A world-traveling troubadour with a long string of recorded songs and albums, Butch has been called "one of the finest songwriters of our time" and is acknowledged by his peers and critics alike as one of the premiere singer-songwriters Texas has ever produced. His tunes evoke mystical visions of wind-swept dry-plains and his lyrics are profoundly imaginative, often displaying for his listeners the miracles that occur in the ordinary through creative irony and metaphors. His lyrical style has often been compared to that of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and his record “Own and Own,” released in '91, contains his "If I Were a Bluebird," a song later covered by EMMYLOU HARRIS.
During his acclaimed career, Hancock has written and recorded several landmark albums, some of them sparse and simple, others as big as the West Texas sky. After moving to the progressive country hotbed of Austin in the mid '70s, he started his own Rainlight label and released the quintessential “West Texas Waltzes and Dust-Blown Tractor Tunes” in 1978.
In the years that followed, he continued to release albums steeped with meaning and memory, a foundation that cemented his world-wide reputation as a master wordsmith.
Get reservations for this one, for sure. He first played the venue a few months ago, so plenty of regulars know him and his music and there will be competition for the available tickets. Tix, $20.

~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

Sat & Sun, Oct 8 & 9, in Ventura; FESTIVAL:
Annual “SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES” at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ventura. This is a wonderful event. We ran a News Feature in the Sep 15 edition that's reprinted below.

“SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES” COMING OCTOBER 8 & 9 IN VENTURA

This is always one of the best fall music events in the Southern half of the Golden State, with Celtic music that includes both traditional music and dance and Celtic rock. There are pipe and drum corps competitions and performances and massed band pageantry – and “pipe” means bagpipes, for the uninitiated – with the best kilt-and-kit wearing groups for 400 miles.

While there is enough music on multiple stages to make tough choices a certainty, plus the state's only Scottish fiddle championship, this is a convening of Highland games, as well. As their promo said a few years ago, that means “Large men throwing things,” and some powerful women letting loose with potentially lethal objects, as well.

The Caber Toss involves throwing telephone poles end-over-end. One person throwing one pole. Amazing. And they do the Hammer Throw. Think of a scene from Thor. You'll either be intimidated or inspired by the sheer physical strength and control of these athletes. See this, and you'll be far less tolerant of TV's silly junk sports with floaties and Styrofoam bats. These sports and their athletes are serious, and they're fun to watch. And don't worry about the kids. There's nothing gladiatorial here and you watch from a safe place.

Featured musicians are SLIGO RAGS, THE BROWNE SISTERS & GEORGE CAVANAUGH, ANITA & THE YANKS, CELTIC SPRING, and ERIC RIGLER & BAD HAGGIS, plenty of bagpipes and drums, dancing by the CLADDAGH DANCE COMPANY, plus more musicians to be announced.

ERIC RIGLER did the haunting Irish flute and whistle for the soundtrack of “Titanic.” These days, his band, BAD HAGGIS, is one of the top Celtic rock outfits. (Festival food vendors have good haggis, in case you're wondering.)

SLIGO RAGS has been named by the Guide's editor, writing the annual “Top Ten/Best of” for FolkWorks magazine, as one of the Top Ten acoustic bands in Southern California. Their musicality gets them booked every year as the only Celtic band at bluegrass festivals, too.

Tragically absent this year is longtime headliner ALEX BEATON, who suffered a paralyzing accident (see feature # 1 in this edition).

In addition to the Saturday and Sunday festival that uses the entire Ventura County Fairgrounds complex, there's a Friday “Scottish Evening” event, October 7, and a Saturday night concert / country dance with PEAT-FIRE FLAME. These require separate tickets. A Celtic rock concert is included with festival admission on Saturday, 5 to 8 pm.

A two-day festival pass is $19 advance, $22 gate (seniors $18 and $20, children $3/day, age 5 and under free). One-day tickets are $12 advance, $14 gate (seniors $10 and $12, children $3, age 5 and under free). The festival site is the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 W Harbor Bl, Ventura 93001. Amtrak stops at the festival's front gate.

For more, check www.seaside-games.com or call 818-886-4968.

Finally, if you're attending the 40th annual OLD TIME FIDDLER'S CONVENTION & FESTIVAL (feature # 11) in Goleta on Sunday, October 9, it makes a great weekend to spend Saturday at the SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES.
