On this day in 1731, the very first magazine published in America, “The American Magazine,” was issued in Philadelphia. The editors expected they would catch-on quickly with readers, but, turns-out they didn’t have anything the newspapers were not already carrying. After three issues, they folded.

21) Concert is March 5, 8 pm; MERLE HAGGARD plays the City National Grove of Anaheim. Whether fugitive, troubadour, misfit or crusader, California country music legend Merle Haggard has explored each perspective with a critical acuity, a hard-won skill that's allowed him to score no less than 40 number one country hits. Immediately embraced by country fans, Haggard also earned the respect of his peers. He has won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter, and in 2010 he was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in recognition for his lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. His body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music.

Over a distinguished fifty year-plus career that's taken him from a drastically misspent criminal youth to solitary confinement in San Quentin to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Haggard has memorably portrayed, in song, myriad archetypal characters. After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008 and having part of his lung removed, Haggard shows no signs of the disease returning and continues to produce songs and perform live with more energy and enthusiasm than many a younger man or woman.

22) Show is Fri, March 7, 8 pm; LEWIS BLACK at the City National Grove of Anaheim.

"I can't wait to see what our leadership isn't going to accomplish next." - Lewis Black

Lewis Black, Grammy Award-winning stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sell out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theatres including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently a sold out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in NYC.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Lewis Black came into national prominence with his appearances on The Daily Show in 1996. Those appearances on The Daily Show led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won the Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 Grammy Award-winning "The Carnegie Hall Performance." Lewis Black won his second Grammy Award for his album "Stark Raving Black." Lewis has published three bestselling books, Nothing's Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010).

√  SPECIAL "WSM MIDNITE JAMBOREE," ONLINE SATURDAY

MIKE SCOTT to host, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of “Grand Ole Opry Star” Ernest Tubb

(February 13, 2014) - Rural Rhythm Records announced today from Nashville that recording artist Mike Scott will guest-host the long-running WSM "Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree" on Saturday, February 15, from the Ernest Tubb Record Shop on Music Valley Drive in Nashville. The show is done with a live audience at the Texas Troubadour Theatre, broadcast on WSM radio, and goes-out worldwide at www.wsmOnline.com.

The show has been on the air more than 60 years, and is second in longevity only to the "Grand Ole Opry."

MIKE SCOTT & THE NASHVILLE BAND includes Carl Jackson, Scott Napier, Heath VanWinkle , Kim Gardner and Steve Day.

They will perform along with special guests CARL JACKSON, LARRY CORDLE & VAL STORY, plus JOE MULLINS & THE RADIO RAMBLERS.

Saturday night’s show is part of a series celebrating Ernest Tubb.

“I was honored to have known Ernest Tubb when I moved to Nashville to work for JIM & JESSE & THE VIRGINIA BOYS at The Grand Ole Opry in 1983 and later attended his funeral with Jim & Jesse in 1984. This date also marks the '10th Memorial' of the loss of my Dad, Charles Virgil Scott (6/23/31 - 2/15/04),” said Mike Scott.

A lot of good programming still is not available everywhere. Mike Scott is seen by millions of TV viewers each week during prime-time on RFD-TV, which reaches 72 million households, though almost none in Southern California. Mike performs with RONNIE RENO & THE RENO TRADITION on RFD's "Reno's Old Time Music Show." In addition, he is the host of the new music TV series "Behind the Dream" ™ currently airing on BlueHighways TV.

Mike Scott’s current album "Home Sweet Home (Civil War Era Songs)" was released in 2013, and with the ongoing 150th anniversary of the central event of American history, the album's profile remains high. Two of its songs will be performed in upcoming episodes of "Reno's Old Time Music Show" during the new season, airing this spring.

Scott, producer and performer on "Home Sweet Home," assembled an all-star group of musicians to pay tribute to the popular parlor songs, minstrel songs and marching songs from the era, some still known to us as traditional standards. Joining Scott on the album are awarding winning players Adam Steffey, Rob Ickes, Bryan Sutton, Aubrey Haynie, Tim Stafford, Mike Compton, Ben Isaacs, Jeff Taylor and Scott Miller.

Will Saturday's "WSM Midnite Jamboree" bring any of that mid-nineteenth century music because Mike Scott is hosting? Possibly. But you can bet you'll hear fine interpretations of the great tunes of Ernest Tubb.

Catch the show at www.wsmOnline.com, Saturday, from 10-11:30 pm, Pacific time (Midnight-1:30 am Nashville time). You can tune-in starting at 5 pm Pacific for three editions of the "Grand Ole Opry," as well.

Opening is The Licata Brothers, the region’s hot musical prodigies. Jimmy Licata (born 1997) began composing original violin tunes at age 9 and even joined in on the folk tune "Marmaduke's Hornpipe" with a local bluegrass band that same year. Five years of lessons followed with renowned Filipino classical guitarist Perfecto de Castro. Brother Tony (born 2000) has pursued a musical path that nicely rounds-out this musical duo. Starting with piano lessons at age 7, Tony has become an accomplished drummer and developed a remarkably expressive singing voice. Tony and Jimmy are hard at work developing their brother harmonies. Come see these up-and-comers while you can, before they only get booked at big venues.
+
The Salty Suites like to support youth music and new artists by helping Bob Stane book them as openers. Scott Gates' busking advice to the Licata Brothers when Jimmy was 16 and Tony was 13 really paid off last August, as the brothers played their hearts out across Kentucky, Nashville, Muscle Shoals (Alabama), Memphis, the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans. Since then the boys have opened several Coffee Gallery shows with an exciting mix of country, rockabilly and folk favorites. Look for some surprises and nice harmonies tonight. Check out some of their adventures at www.TheLicataBrothers.com

Singer-songwriter Dan Hicks is an American original. Since the early 1960s, Hicks has deftly blended elements of Swing, Jazz, Folk and Country music to create the appealing sound he sometimes calls "Folk Jazz." The lyrics of his songs range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch. Dan's irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid-back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit will make most who listen fans for life. He's a snappy dresser, too.
